Apologetics Leads to True Worship

Apologetics and worship? Aren’t those mutually exclusive? Christian apologetics, the reasoned defense of the faith, is often seen as rather dry and clinical – a very cold, sterile niche of Christianity set aside for those kinda weird nerds or those that are a little more quarrelsome than they should be. Meanwhile, worship is of the heart, not the head, right? Well, this nerd begs to differ. Worship is certainly more than feelings. I would dare say that many mistake the beat of a good tune for the moving of the Spirit of God, but I digress….

Why Apologetics Won't Work

If apologetics is so great and its arguments compelling, why isn’t everyone convinced of Christianity? This is where the doctrine of election debate between Calvinists and Arminians normally comes in, but I think both sides are overlooking a simpler and self-evident truth of human nature – one they can both agree on. People aren’t robots. Each of us view new truth claims through a unique lens formed by our conditioning, cares, and community.

The Sower's Apologetics Profile: When is Apologetics Effective?

What is the effectiveness of apologetics ? The Holy Scriptures tell us that God has revealed himself to mankind but that humanity as a whole does not want God (Romans 1:18-20). This leads people to create crafty ways in which to avoid God. Jesus also revealed the inner depths of the human psyche in this exchange of God’s wooing and the human response to that truth in the Parable of the Sower (Matthew 13:3-23, Mark 4:2-20, Luke 8:4-18). In this parable, the sower (one who relays God’s truth) scatters seeds (the truth of God) and the seeds fall on four different kinds of ground (types of human dispositions).

We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

8 What Is Christian Unity?

Where the Spirit of God is there must be love, and if I have once known and recognized any man to be my brother in Christ Jesus, the love of Christ constraineth me no more to think of him as a stranger or foreigner, but a fellow citizen with the saints. Now I hate High Churchism as my soul hates Satan; but I love George Herbert, although George Herbert is a desperately High Churchman. I hate his High Churchism, but I love George Herbert from my very soul, and I have a warm corner in my heart for every man who is like him. Let me find a man who loves my Lord Jesus Christ as George Herbert did and I do not ask myself whether I shall love him or not; there is no room for question, for I cannot help myself; unless I can leave off loving Jesus Christ, I cannot cease loving those who love him. ( The Metropolitan Tabernacle Pulpit Sermons , vol. XII, 6)

Why Does God Allow Bad Things to Happen?

Evolution supposedly progresses by the death of the less fit and the reproduction of the most fit. So, if this the case, why should we help the old, sick, infirm, and disabled? Shouldn’t they be eliminated as less fit? After all, in the world of evolution the strong survive, and tough for you if you’re born weak or less fit. According to an evolutionist’s own worldview, how can death, disease, suffering, cancer, and disabilities really be “bad”? In nature, the weak and ill die off and the strong survive, passing on their good genes to the next generation—this is how evolution supposedly progresses. Death and weakness from disease and mutations is a must for “bad” genes to die out. So by what standard do evolutionists call these things bad? Certainly not by their own standard! To claim a standard for good and bad, they have to borrow from a different worldview—the biblical one—to define what good and bad even are.

Volitional Resistance to Christianity Often Masquerades as Rational Opposition | Cold Case Christianity

“I would place myself firmly in your first category, Jim: I’m not convinced by Christianity because I don’t see evidence for it. But I would not say it’s because I lack information – it’s rather that I have too much information, especially information about how the real world works. Your placing yourself in the third category, that of volitionally rejecting God, is telling. Almost all the Christians I know who were once atheists place themselves either here or in the second category, rejecting God because they hate Him. And almost all the atheists I know fit into the first, rational category. I would almost be tempted to say that you were never a ‘true’ atheist. It seems also to be a widespread belief among Christians that most of us atheist are god-haters or self-lovers. I guess that fits in with numerous Scriptural verses, but it doesn’t reflect reality on the ground in my experience.”

4 Simple Ways To Help You Read the Bible Better - Jonathan Morrow

Two quick tips here. When you read the Bible you need to understand the historical backdrop of the text. For example, the Old Testament needs to be understood in light of the Ancient Near East. And the New Testament needs to be understood in light of a largely Jewish mindset emerging in a world heavily influenced by Greco-Roman Culture.

Congressional Leaders Demand HHS Investigate Planned Parenthood's Cover Up of Sex Crimes

"When a child is the victim of sexual abuse by a family member or the victim of a pimp who has forced her into a life of sex slavery, she deserves to be protected, not to be victimized again by an abortion facility that willingly turns a blind eye to her torture," said Live Action President Lila Rose. "We are grateful that so many members of Congress are pushing to initiate an investigation into Planned Parenthood and help put an end to this horrific cycle of abuse."

Paige Patterson Will No Longer Speak at the Annual SBC Meeting

In a few days, for the first time in 66 years I will not attend the annual meeting of the Southern Baptist Convention—having begun attending when I was nine. As many of you know, I was elected in 2017 to deliver the 2018 annual convention sermon, but I have now respectfully requested to be released from this high privilege because I do not want my role as a preacher to detract in any way from the important business of our convention and because my desire is to work toward biblical harmony at our annual meeting. Many messengers have implored me to carry out this assignment, but this convention is not about me, and I have every confidence that this decision is best and right.

Defending Your Faith 101: The urgency for all Christians to get 'basic training'

“The problem of leading a Christian life in a non-Christian society is now very present to us…. ‘The Faith of Donald J. Trump’: A Book Review

Since the advent of Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority in 1979, Weems’s religious tradition of exalting politicians has been rejuvenated. A specially blessed American nation is central to the faith of many Christian Republican insiders. Thus, their favorite leaders—from Washington and Jefferson to Reagan and Trump—must necessarily be men of genuine devotion. However, squeezing Trump into this pious mold may present the greatest challenge yet for Christian America’s partisans.

8 Contrasting Signs of an Insecure Leader

So what’s the antidote? How do we normalize our leadership away from extremes? Supernaturally, it begins with a re-centering of our identity around Christ. Only the security we find in his gospel—where sinners are justified freely forever, united to Christ to be seated with him in the heavenly places in every moment, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to obey God and bear godly fruit—can help us battle the insecurities of the flesh, whether they manifest themselves in aggression or passivity, arrogance or false humility.

Too Few Pastors Spoke Up. It’s the Real Reason We’re in This Mess Today | The Stream

As for knowing any churches that refuse to perform marriage for folk who have divorced for shallow reasons, I can’t say I do – not because there aren’t any, but because I don’t know what criteria local churchesministers use for agreeingrefusing to perform marriages. It is further complicated by the fact that nonbelievers who divorce may come to Christ then seek to remarry. Should they be permitted to marry, or are they bound to seek reunion with their former spouse? I know of one couple where the wife’s husband abandoned her for another women – valid grounds for divorce, and her second husband had divorced his then wife whilst not walking with the Lord. The pair had an amazing witness, and walked strongly with the Lord ’til the husband passed away. I would contrast this with those who call themselves Christian then seek a divorce.

Defending Truth in an Age of Confusion: Why Apologetics Matters - LogosTalk

Like most people, the first time I heard the word “apologetics” I was befuddled. I was driving down Interstate 5 in Southern California en route to work at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, and for the life of me, I couldn’t understand why there was such a stress for Christians to apologize. After showing up at work, I asked a fellow Christian what the word meant—and that’s when I discovered, to my relief, that apologetics means “to defend the faith.”

31 What Sustains Missions in the Hardest Places?

There are only foolish reasons to support missions unless there is something we cannot see that matters more than what we can see. We long for that unspeakable beauty — we go out not just serving those in need, but seeking that full vision of the highest happiness. With longing and joy in worship, we go on mission ensured of the promise that as we seek the heavenly Jerusalem, we will appear before our God (Psalm 84:7; Hebrews 11:13–16). Missions is quite simply a pursuit of God who is in heaven.

33 The Stupendous Reality of Being “in Christ Jesus”

But at the conscious level of our own action, it is through faith. Christ dwells in our hearts “through faith” (Ephesians 3:17). 36 Throw Like a Girl: Why Feminism Insults Real Women

But a rolling pin is different than a measuring cup, and we can acknowledge that without saying one is better than the other. And what a weird thing it would be if we did! Imagine showing someone your kitchen tools and having them indignantly accuse you of believing the measuring cup was better than the rolling pin. Better at what? If you want to measure some flour, you’ll have a hard time with a rolling pin, and you’ll have similar problems trying to roll out a pie crust with a measuring cup. A rolling pin has to be evaluated according to the standards of what makes a good rolling pin, and measuring cups have to be judged on their own terms. (As a sidenote, if you cringe at the domestic analogy, then it shows you’re doing exactly what I’m talking about.)

God Doesn’t Make Us Nice. He Makes Us New.

God doesn’t just make us nice; he makes us new—new creatures with new desires and the power of God’s indwelling Spirit to help us pursue them. By taking seriously the Bible’s assessment of our sinful state and the impossibility of self-improvement, we’re free to look to Christ as our only hope. As Lawrence puts it, “Christian conversion is a rescue. It’s a rescue from death to life, from wrath to forgiveness, from enslavement to freedom. And it’s God’s rescue. Only he can do it” (45).

Is there anything worse than sin? Jesus says so – Thomas R. Schreiner

The person who has the greater sin could be Annas, Caiaphas, or even Judas, but for our purposes it doesn’t matter. Jesus clearly thinks the person who handed him over committed a worse sin than Pilate did. Both Pilate and this other person sinned, yes, but some sins are worse than others. The one who betrayed Jesus to Pilate took the initiative to do away with Jesus, while Pilate reacted to a situation he found himself in.

Astonished and Amused by Lamoureux’s (Mis)Take on Intelligent Design | Evolution News

5. ID does not require either instantaneous creation , or a kind of stasis in between obvious infusions of information . There’s some sort of confusion on Denis’s part about how intelligent design scientists view the process of change over time, whether in cosmic or biological evolution. Most ID scientists accept an old earth. Lamoureux appears to believe that we think the designer had no role from 14 billion to 4 billion years ago, leaving the development of galaxies, stars, and planets to purely naturalistic forces. This is not true. It should be obvious that it is not true. One of the arguments for a designer is the fine-tuning of the universe. Another is the incredible rarity of a planet such as Earth and of the conditions necessary for life on our planet. These arguments have been advanced in The Privileged Planet , as well as by Michael Denton in his work . Those are reasons to infer that the designer still works in guiding things. Now if I were to draw on my faith understanding I would say he upholds and sustains all things. But that is a belief based in Scripture. ID does not look to Scripture for a hermeneutic.

On Hominid Fossils and Universal Common Ancestry, Denis Lamoureux Distorts | Evolution News

Concordism refers to the position that the teaching of the Bible on the natural world, properly interpreted, will agree with the teaching of science (when it properly understands the data), and may in fact supplement science. The concordist not only believes that nature and Scripture will harmonize, but sees specific references in the Bible to current scientific understanding of the universe. The concordist, then, looks for those close parallels in order to show that Scripture concords or agrees with scientific conclusions. Because the concordist holds Scripture as entirely truthful, there cannot be any ultimate contradiction between Scripture rightly interpreted and nature rightly interpreted. In both Scripture and nature, of course, there is the potential for error in the interpretation. Concordism, however, assumes that correlations can be made, believing in a degree of accuracy of interpretation (though not infallibility) in current science and in showing how Scripture supports clear scientific conclusions.

Doubt as Virtue: How to Doubt and Have Faith without Exploding

An experience of intellectual doubt is often taken by Christians to be a sign of weak faith. I argue, however, that an encounter with doubt, when treated properly, is extremely valuable, since it can lead to knowledge and an even greater faith. To see this, it’s important to understand the nature of doubt. Intellectual doubt should be defined as finding plausible what we take to be a potentially defeating claim. This definition provides insights for how to evaluate one’s doubts. My claim is that it is completely rational to maintain our Christian faith while experiencing doubt. This allows us to in turn evaluate the reasonableness of our doubt. Evidence matters with intellectual doubt, since a doubt requires outweighing evidence to defeat a belief effectively. Merely to find an objection plausible is not for there to be a preponderance of evidence in its favor. The upshot of all this is that, by addressing our doubts, we are forced to think more carefully about our faith (i.e., we have greater knowledge) and, in the case that a doubt is diffused, we have more reason to trust (i.e., we have an even greater faith).
