1 Did God Appear in Bodily Form Before Jesus? | conversantlife.com

The Lord came down to look at the city and the tower the people were building (Genesis 11:5).   >How could God “come down” to the earth prior to him taking on human form in the person of Jesus?   Explanation: Prior to the incarnation—God taking on human flesh in the person of Jesus—he did in fact make his presence known. Adam and Eve “heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day” (Genesis 3:8 niv). God appeared to Abraham (Genesis 17:1 and Genesis 18:1), Jacob (Genesis 32:1), and Moses (Exodus 3:2).   These appearances or manifestations of God are called theophanies. It is when God makes himself tangible to the human senses, as when Job was able to hear God in the wind (   Job 38:1), or when God appeared to Moses in the burning bush. But in a more restrictive sense God has “come down” and made himself visible in the form of a man, like he did with Abraham and Jacob. Some scholars believe certain appearances of God were the pre-incarnate Christ. Other possible pre-incarnate appearances include the meeting between Joshua and the “Commander of the Lord’s army” (   Joshua 5:13-15) and the fourth man “like a son of the gods” who was with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:23-25).

Putting on the Brave Face

Coaching tee ball is hard. And not just because it’s like herding a pack of wet cats. Or because five-year-olds generally prefer digging in the dirt to fielding grounders. Or because twenty minutes in, the main thing on half of the kids’ minds is the juice box after the game.

In his first epistle, Peter informs believers that we are to be always prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks us for a reason for the hope that is in us. In this day and age, the number and kinds of questions that arise are astounding, but this does not give us an excuse to give up the fight. In this lecture, Dr. R.C. Sproul reminds us that apologetics is the duty of every Christian in every walk of life.

Dads, Date Your Daughter’s Boyfriend

The much-anticipated introduction is an unending fountain of humor for friends and family, but it’s more often an occasion for horror for the young man. What will dad say? What will he ask? Will he be armed? The moment is a mountain to overcome in almost any relationship, but I believe it’s a mountain we, as Christians, can capture for the good of the daughter, the suitor, and the father.

Grace to You

Believers are not to make unrighteous and unmerciful judgment on others because it manifests a wrong view of God. With the phrase “so that you will not be judged,” Jesus reminds the scribes and Pharisees that they are not the final court. To judge another person’s motives or to stand in the place of condemnation is to play God. “For not even the Father judges anyone, but He has given all judgment to the Son” (John 5:22). During the millennial kingdom Christ will share some of that judgment with us (Matt. 19:28), but until that time we blaspheme God whenever we take the role of judge on ourselves.

The Gospel Coalition - Coming Out as a Christian

But what if we didn’t mince words? What if we actually said what we thought—after carefully thinking about what we should say? What if we reconciled the person we are at home with the person we are at work or pretend to be on social media? What if all Christians offered their opinions clearly and unabashedly, so that the world might actually know that the vast majority of churchgoers are not, in fact, much like those Westboro protestors at all? I want to do this. I want to be a more transparent person who identifies himself, without shame, as a Christian at all times. That would be a more kind, honest, and loving way of treating my neighbors than to tacitly lie to them while guarding my own reputation. I’m ready to drop the facade—both in person and online.

God's Not Dead: Without God Ascending Evolution Seems Impossible

Unguided evolution appears impossible. Non-directed evolution is not just implausible; the theory seems impossible. Biologically sturdy ants and their descendants would not evolve into the top-ten list of endangered species, like a great ape. Strong and resilient bacteria would not evolve into a weak and easily extinct Dodo bird. The so called lower species are usually the ones that are the strongest and most fit to survive. If reproducing, the strongest and greatest number of offspring, is an important means of specie preservation, then the ant and the rat are a couple of the “highest” species.

Jesus’ final words to his first-century disciples were “go, make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28.18-20).  Twenty-first century churches carry the same mission, sent as Jesus was sent to be a witness to the gospel among billions around the globe.  How, though, can a local church and individual believers fully embrace the Great Commission call to intercultural evangelism, discipleship, and church planting?  How can we do missions well?

An NBA Finals trouncing unlike any other

I love LeBron James and have rooted for him every year over the last seven years. He’s an incredible athlete who has improved every season of his career, who has become a great leader, and who is extremely clutch and will go down as an all time great. I’m hurt right now but DAYUM were the Spurs incredible. This is their greatest championship to date. Not only because of the score of the games but because they finally beat a great team that was proven to be full of championship talent. I am in love with the way the Spurs play. I wish the Heat or Thunder played that way, but sadly there aren’t enough Popovichs to go around. This team is so selfless that they make me ashamed to ever think of myself when I’m working with a group of people. We should all learn something from them.

Five Things Every Christian Needs to Grow — Free eBook

“Being a Christian is not an acquired skill or discipline like diving or ice skating. It is a living, vital relationship with the God of the universe, a relationship that begins when a person becomes a new creation in Him and receives Jesus as Lord by faith. But like Olympic athletes, Christians are called upon to train, to make sacrifices, and to embrace certain disciplines in order to give God “our utmost for His highest.” This book deals with five of those disciplines: Bible study, prayer, worship, service, and stewardship. Just as Olympic athletes work hard to achieve their best performances, our diligence in attending to these aspects of the Christian life will help determine our effectiveness in serving our Lord.”

Apoptosis Is Unchanged from Cambrian Corals to Humans

This is but one more instance in a huge body of evidence supporting intelligent design for the origin of animal body plans, as Stephen Meyer explains further in Darwin's Doubt (now in paperback with an added chapter answering critics of the first edition). Apoptosis is but one mechanism that makes an organism work. It plays important roles in embryonic development as well as disease prevention. When you add up all the other systems required to build and maintain an animal, on so many levels, Darwinism seems clearly inadequate to the account for them. The only cause we know of that is able to explain the observations, from the overall forms down to the specific amino acids, is intelligent design.

#HowOldWereYou: Origins of a Heartbreaking Hashtag

Other than hearing stories of a great grandfather whom I never met occasionally exposing himself to his grandchildren with whom he lived, I don’t know anyone who has been abused or pursued. I am sure it has happened but was never talked about. I was “depantsed” as a child by a couple of bullies in my school class, but that’s it. Any scars I carry over from childhood were from being mistreated by teachers and bullied by other students because I was so ugly. I do hear stories about perpetrators, however. In a church I attended, a convicted rapist of a child was released into the supervision of one of the pastors, who had the uncanny misjudgment to put him into the clown ministry. He reoffended. The parents said they would contact the police (I don’t know if they ever did). The church didn’t. A child sexual abuser who was subjected to church discipline at the church where he offended, has eventually worked his way up to the head of the board of elders at another church I once attended. He was never reported to the police or held legally responsible for his actions.

Clarifying Apologetics: Pt. 1 of 3

I am someone who accepts this consensus — in part because of reasons independent of this historical fact, but in part because of this historical fact itself. The tradition of the Church has a good deal of normative epistemic force for me. By that I mean that the mere fact that the tradition proclaims “X” is a reason (albeit a defeasible reason) for me to believe X. In other words: unless I have good reason to believe otherwise, I’m going with what the tradition tells me. Why? At the very least, because I’m much too aware of the epistemic limitations imposed on me by my own place and time, much too aware of how foolish I would be to think I alone can consistently arrive at truth from this small pool of knowledge and perspective available to me. I’m in need of the knowledge and perspective of others. I’m in need of a sort of “peer review”, a doxastic democracy (to borrow from G.K. Chesterton who equated tradition with “democracy extended through time”). So, as a Christian, I’m inclined to go with what the Christian tradition has gone with — especially when the relevant tradition enjoys a long-standing consensus which spans national, economic, and cultural lines.

‘Feed my sheep’: A shepherd’s call to war

When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.”  (John 21:15-17, ESV)

34 Do College Students Care About Truth? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Over the last ten years I have done outreach on a major college campus (The Ohio State University which has 56,000 students). I have had hundreds of spiritual conversations with students and direct an apologetics ministry called Ratio Christi Student Apologetics Alliance. It is no secret that many apologists have written books on the Truth question. In other words, the statement “we are living in postmodern times” has almost become cliche in today’s society. Hence, because of the impact of post-modernism, many seem to assume that college students are not interested in objective truth. So the supposed fallout is that people are not asking whether Christianity is true. Given my experience on the campus, I will respond to this issue. So the good news is that I am truly speaking from personal experience.

Convince Me There's A God: Archaeology 4 - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The problem with that line of thinking, I discovered, was what to do about the histories of other ancient nations that gave credibility to many of the historical records in the Old Testament? Were the historians of other countries who served other gods somehow joined in the Jewish conspiracy to promote the one God of Israel? That didn’t seem logical to me, so I looked deeper into several archaeological discoveries to see if I could find the truth. Could archaeology have the answer to my challenge to “Convince me there’s a God?”

36 Can we know what Jesus really said? Myths, legends and truths in the Bible - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

2. Much of the reasoning that attacks the authenticity of the gospels is driven by a modernist, naturalist bias. For example, the gospels include accounts of miracles and healing; but naturalists argue that miracles are impossible and must have been invented. In the gospels, Jesus predicts the fall of Jerusalem; it’s argued by some that he couldn’t have known about the event beforehand, and so the gospels must be written after AD70 when it happened, and made to look as if Jesus had predicted it. But if this was so, why wouldn’t they have included more details of the fall of Jerusalem into the story? In fact, this issue is used by some to suggest that the gospels must have been written before AD70. But more generally, why assume that anything supernatural is impossible and must be invented? Isn’t this performing analyses after drawing the conclusion? If there is a God and he came to Earth, wouldn’t he be able to manipulate the natural world at will?

37 The Kalaam Cosmological Argument: Short, Sweet, and Stout - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Many philosophical and apologetic arguments are difficult to commit to memory. Some arguments consist of five thorough points. Sometimes these arguments are difficult to bring out especially when you are speaking to someone about the faith. However, there is one such argument that is short enough that it is easy to remember, sweet enough to get people thinking, and stout enough to hold up even to the most ardent objector. This argument is called the Kalaam Cosmological Argument. It was originally developed by a Muslim in the late 11th century by the name of Abu Hamid Muhammed ibn Muhammed al-Ghazali. He is known by his shortened name Al-Ghazali. In recent days, the Kalaam Cosmological Argument has been revived and brought to the public sphere by Christian apologist William Lane Craig. Craig has written extensively on this argument and one of his resources will be used in this article. The argument consists of three premises:

38 Banging the Drum: 12 Apologetics Quotes - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

If we live out every biblical command to be thoughtful, winsome, loving ambassadors of Jesus Christ will we change the world? Will everyone become a Christian? Not ultimately. Jesus taught that the wheat and the weeds will grow together until they are sorted out in the end (Matthew 13:24–30). So how do we know if we are being successful in our cultural engagement? Since the fullness of the kingdom of God awaits the second coming and ultimate reign of the Messiah, how we measure successful engagement in this present age is faithfulness, not utopia. We faithfully engage in the spheres of influence that God has providentially placed us within and leave the results to God.

What in the World Is a Worldview?

Here are a few examples to illustrate how your worldview affects the way you see things. Suppose that one day a close friend tells you that she recently met with a spiritualist who put her in touch with a loved one who died ten years ago. Later that day, you read an article about a statue of the Virgin Mary that witnesses claim to have seen weeping blood. You also hear a news story on the radio about possible signs of complex organic life discovered on Mars. Your worldview—your background assumptions about God, the origin and nature of the universe, human beginnings, life after death, and so forth—strongly influences how you interpret these reports and react to them.

Some people are just so ignorant. No, I don’t mean that they are uninformed, so perhaps “ignorant” is not the correct word for me to use. What I mean is that they don’t a very good job of processing the information they do possess. The result is that their conclusions and/or reactions to the available information are woefully inadequate. In other words, they have the hard drive, but their processor is corrupted.

In life, you will be asked to do things that violate your conscience and your desire to do what is right."

42 How Could John, a Poor, Uneducated Fisherman, Write the Gospel of John? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

A fellow Christian Case Maker I met at Frank Turek’s CrossExamined Academy is teaching a church group about the reliability of the New Testament. A question was raised about the Apostle John: “How could John, an uneducated fisherman, have written such a literate and theologically rich gospel account?” After all, John was just a fisherman; was he educated enough to accomplish something this sophisticated? Irenaeus, certainly thought so. This historic Bishop of Lugdunum, was the student of Polycarp and Ignatius (two men who were taught directly by the Apostle John). Irenaeus identified the Apostle John as the author of the fourth Gospel, reflecting the historic understanding of the earliest Christians. In spite of this, many skeptics are eager to dismiss the authorship of John (often in an attempt to further discredit the supernatural New Testament claims related to Jesus) by doubting John’s level of education and degree of literacy. There are, however several good reasons to resist the notion that John, the son of Zebedee, was too illiterate to have written the fourth Gospel:

But, one thing it probably does not mean is that your book is a bold and  faithful exposition of evangelical Christian beliefs. She, and millions of Americans, are simply looking for an existential experience with the divine that can bring meaning and purpose to their life.

Questions From Facebook

The objection here is on the B-Theory of time this undermines evolution because that isn’t genuine change, the argument would be. I guess your response to this objection, I think, will be a matter of whether or not you think that evolution requires this sort of change in order to be genuine evolution. The B-Theorist would say, no, evolution only requires change in the sense that the poker changes from one end to the other, or that as you look at a picture one end of the picture looks different than the other end of the picture. That is all that evolution means – there are different things over time. But, if you think that in order for things to literally evolve, that things need to change their intrinsic properties, then that doesn’t really occur on a B-Theory. This is actually a philosophical objection. I go into this in great length in discussing the B-Theory. On the B-Theory of time there really is no intrinsic change. Indeed, nothing actually endures from one moment of time to another. There are just different slices of things at different times. So on the B-Theory, I am literally not the same person who was here a second ago talking to you.

Homosexual Behavior Policy Leads Lawyers to Vote to Deny Christian University Law School Accreditation

According to TWU, "The resolution is not binding on the Benchers and does not legally compel them reverse the April decision. Even that cannot compel the Benchers to disregard their statutory duties."

Actually, guns do kill people

Your argument fairly presents the objective and subjective sides of intentionality – “inherent purpose does not negate subjective intentionality, but neither does subjective intentionality negate the objective intentionality built into our cultural artifacts”. However, you then give all weight in your argument to the objective intentionality of guns (as you define it – to kill people) inevitably overpowering any one individual’s subjective intentionality of guns (to not kill people). You conclude from your example of Tolkien’s Lord of the Ring saga that “the objective intentionality with which the Ring was made prevailed over subjective intentionality within Tolkien’s narrative world.” I will give you credit for not stating outright that the same outcome is inevitable regarding guns in the hands of American citizens. But you come so close to it, that I feel compelled (of course I do) to offer some analysis. The best estimates from the CDC and other sources are that there are approximately 270-310,000,000 guns of all types in circulation in America today. Also from the CDC, approximately 32,000 people die annually from gunshot wounds.

Faith Isn’t About Finding Answers

Belief is simply an acknowledgement of facts that we judge to be true; faith is putting your trust in something beyond yourself, even if it is beyond understanding. Faith, in a Christian sense, is about not only believing that God is real, but that God knows what He’s doing even when we don’t. That we don’t have to know the reasons why He does things—we’re only required to put our trust in Him that He’s knows what’s doing.

50 Flight: The Genius of Birds (Resource Review) - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

“Flight” presents a number of different birds as case studies the complexity which the systems that make up a bird show. Hummingbirds’ flight muscles comprise, on average, 43% of the bird’s body mass. This allows the birds to have an enormous amount of precision in order to move in the ways that they can, such as hovering, moving backwards, laterally, etc. The hummingbird generates lift both on the back and the front strokes of their wings. This capability is grounded in the shoulder joints found in the bones which are at the bases of the wings. The hummingbird’s heart must beat at an enormous rate, which means that it also must eat quite a bit in order to sustain the energy level required for the bird’s metabolism and constant movement. The hummingbird’s tongue is particularly interesting, for it has a number of functions on it which allow it to draw up nectar far more efficiently than had been thought.
