2 Start Preparing to Defend Marriage within the Church - Stand to Reason Blog

With Christian or Jewish presuppositions, or indeed Muslim, then if you believe in what it says in Genesis 1 about God making heaven and earth—and the binaries in Genesis are so important—that heaven and earth, and sea and dry land, and so on and so on, and you end up with male and female. It’s all about God making complementary pairs which are meant to work together. The last scene in the Bible is the new heaven and the new earth, and the symbol for that is the marriage of Christ and his church. It’s not just one or two verses here and there which say this or that. It’s an entire narrative which works with this complementarity so that a male-plus-female marriage is a signpost or a signal about the goodness of the original creation and God’s intention for the eventual new heavens and new earth.

10 Things We No Longer See at Airports

For many years there were no restrictions on where you could light up in an airport. Then when the Surgeon General got involved with all those health warnings, designated smoking areas became the norm. When cigarettes were first banned on certain flights, the most congested area in the airport arrival lounge wasn’t the baggage claim but rather the perimeter around the first pedestal ashtray passengers encountered as they exited. Today, smoking restrictions at many airports are so tight that folks have to stand some 20 feet or more outside the exit doors of the building.

Grace to You

People are so committed to worrying that, if they can’t find anything in the present to worry about, they think about possible problems in the future. So Jesus assures us, “Tomorrow will care for itself.” This is not the careless philosophy of the hedonist who lives only for his present enjoyment. It is the conviction of the child of God who knows tomorrow will care for itself because it is in his heavenly Father’s hands.

From Youth Minister to Felon

Dear Anonymous Pastor, I was a girl just like the one you abused. A leader in my youth group, hungry to know the Lord, and deeply needing love and support. The youth pastor who abused me also believed that we were having an affair. I'm sure that you can understand how it is hard for some people to have a helpful concept of God when their own father was not a good reflection of what God is like. Can you imagine how hard it is to have a helpful understanding of God when your pastor - the one who is supposed to lead you toward mature faith - is the one who is perverting love. I learned that being "loved" was all about being used for someone else's desire, with no regard to the damage done to me. I know that as adults we can easily say that the pastor is separate from God, but as a teenage girl (who was very vulnerable for lots of other reasons) there was very little separation. My youth pastor taught me what God's love is like. The damage is unimaginable.

10 That Awkward Moment When We Speak the Gospel

Evangelism is counter-cultural. It's true everywhere on the planet, but perhaps it's especially so in our increasingly post-Christian Western society. We live in a polite culture, for the most part. Talk about religion? You just don't go there. Talk about how many tornadoes have come through, and how the team is doing, and how the city has new recycling bins. But Jesus Christ, crucified for sinners and risen from the dead? You just don't go there. So they say.

When Dads Don't Stay

The first clear memory I have of my father exemplifies every moment after. The lake lapped softly against the posts of weathered, bone-dry dock upon which I stood. I curled my toes into the splintery wood, blinked back the intense, hot Texas sun and leapt blind, for the first time, into waters well over my head. I didn't have to see my father to know he'd be there, in the water, to catch me. All my life, my father's presence has been certain as the sun; I've never wondered if he'd be there for me when I needed him.

13 Reasonable Faith Campaign | Reasonable Faith

“Dr. Craig, I am a sixteen year old high school student from New Zealand, and have been very inspired by the Reasonable Faith Ministries. I am a senior debater, and as it happens the only Christian in my large class of very opinionated (very mocking) young atheists. RF has given me compelling arguments to use in my frequent discussions, so thank you. Those who disagree lack the philosophical maturity to adequately address and refute the arguments. I hope one day God will soften their hearts and they'll be open to the truth. Also, watching your debating style taught me to be respectful and concise. When I was first becoming interested in apologetics I tended to get very angry and very loud... but as Paul says, "Slow to speak, quick to listen." You demonstrate that very well."

God's Not Dead: Atheism is Absurd Since It Requires Theism

Wow. That article is so convoluted and self referential as to be completely nonsensical. You tie yourself in knots claiming that atheism is impossible because of the properties of light or because some atheists say they are open to proof. You claim that god could exist in the future and because of that and the fact the concept of god is omnipotent that means god is real. Talk about circular reasoning. Atheism is the logical conclusion of education and scientific inquiry as well as the default position of every human, and animal, ever born. Children had the idea of god taught to them by parents who didn't know the answers to the questions of what the lights in the sky were, what happens when you die or why natural disasters occur. Knowing the answers to those questions diminish the places where your god can exist. If god has no place in the workings of the natural world or the lives of people then where else is there for his existence? Why has there not been a burning bush or a messiah since the days of psychiatry? Is it not the case that Abraham, the father of all the big 3 religions, would have been considered schizophrenic and hospitalised after attempting to murder his own son after hearing voices in his head telling him to do it? If not for that story so many of the world's religions fall apart.

The Gospel Coalition - Teen Expectations in an Erratic Economy

One of the primary themes of Ecclesiastes is the unpredictability of life. The Preacher writes in Ecclesiastes 9:1, “But all this I laid to heart, examining it all, how the righteous and the wise and their deeds are in the hand of God. Whether it is love or hate, man does not know; both are before him.” While students work to make themselves attractive and qualified for the job market, parents and ministers serve them well by reinforcing that ultimate control lies in the hands of God, not man and his efforts. Young people can become disillusioned with life when they carry an expectation that if they follow certain steps, then financial success awaits them, when, in reality, human effort offers no guarantees.

18 The Strangely Simple World of Internet Atheism - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

I’ve really changed and been challenged by what I’ve read on the internet. I’ve . . . really had my faith rattled by some of the science articles . . . and the associated comments. It seemed that most thought Christians (or anyone who believed in God) was a fool. I remember one comment to the effect that ‘one day all our religions will look as stupid as believing in Zeus or Thor does to us today.’ . . . Being a life long believer . . . I started to question . . . was pretty miserable for a while. You could say I lost my faith.

Does the Appearance of Design Prove God's Existence? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

During the last thirty years or so, scientists have discovered that the existence of intelligent life depends on a complex and delicate balance of initial conditions given in the big bang itself.  Scientists once believed that whatever the initial conditions of the universe, eventually intelligent life might evolve.  But we now know that our existence is balanced on a knife’s edge.  It seems vastly more probable that a life-prohibiting universe rather than a life-permitting universe such as ours should exist.  The existence of intelligent life depends on a conspiracy of initial conditions that must be fine-tuned to a degree that is literally incomprehensible and incalculable.  For example, Stephen Hawking has estimated that if the rate of the universe’s expansion one second after the big bang had been smaller by even one part in a hundred thousand million million, the universe would have re-collapsed into a hot fireball.  British physicist P. C. W. Davies has calculated that the odds against the initial conditions being suitable for later star formation (without which planets could not exist) is one followed by a thousand billion billion zeroes, at least.

20 Defending the Faith: "That's True for You, But Not For Me" - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The following are notes from the first in a year long sermon series on common objections to the Christian faith.  Why preach on what is known as “apologetics” instead of just doing what I normally do, which is preach verse-by-verse through a book of the Bible? The last twenty years has seen a rise of atheism from 8% to 15%.  I have also discovered over the last 15 years of ministry that the number one reason people leave the faith and one of the top three reasons people don’t share the Gospel is because they don’t know how to handle these objections.  So, I am tired of watching people leave the Body or stand impotent in the face of opposition.

It's Just War — Highlands Ministries

It is rather fashionable, in certain Reformed circles, to bemoan the church’s historical ignorance. We don’t know our Bibles, nor our creeds, nor our fathers. In slightly smaller Reformed circles we likewise bemoan our anemic understanding of the church. We live in the age of the para-church, the house church, the self-authenticating, social network framed country club church. The weaknesses we complain about are likely worse than we think, though likely not for the reasons that we think. I fear we complain about these weaknesses not because they are dangerous and dishonoring to our Lord, but because they make us look bad. If all evangelicals were as well educated, thoughtful, historically grounded and ecclesiastically connected as we are, we seem to think, the world would stop thinking of us as ignorant, backwoods fundamentalists.

22 "Something Can't Come from Nothing": Is it More Reasonable to Accept or Reject this Principle? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Now let’s get to the main point of today’s post. Hraefn and SkepticNY are being quite unreasonable in their recent comments in the following manner: They think that it is more reasonable to reject than to accept the widely held principle: “something can’t come from nothing.” Notice, I'm not making any claim about either side in this dispute having (or not having) a “proof.” I’m simply asking my atheist friends to think about which is the most reasonable alternative … to reject or accept the principle: “something can’t come from nothing.” And I really do appreciate you guys taking the time to interact on my blog. You are among my atheist friends. I think you guys are reasonable about many things (e.g., I suspect you believe in all the laws of logic, as do I), but your rejection of the principle “something can’t come from nothing” is not one of the items about which you are thinking reasonably. Let me explain.

Don't become angry with those who are antagonists to the faith - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Although I came to faith at an early age, I nearly lost my faith due to doubt in my mid-20s.  However, I too had a grand transformation when I was influenced by the evidence presented by those who also had grand transformations such as Strobel, McDowell, Craig, Habermas, and others.  These individuals were open to the truth wherever it led.  The truth in fact led them to the throne of God… It could be that many who are angry atheists now will become the leaders of the church tomorrow.  This is well within the realm of possibility.  God can transform a heart that is bitter and fill it with forgiveness.  God can transform a heart that knows only hate to a heart that is open to love.  This is well within the power of God.  So for the Christian, I would simply say: don’t become angry with those who are antagonists to the faith.  Pray for them.  They may very well be your colleagues in the faith very soon.  It could be that the next great evangelist, like Billy Graham, has not come to faith yet.

25 Should Women Be Apologists? They Already Are! - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

In the past couple of decades or so there has been a renaissance of apologetics at the college and seminary level. There was a time when undergraduate and graduate degrees in Christian apologetics did not exist. Now there are a number of great schools and universities that offer degrees in Christian apologetics (i.e., Talbot School of Theology at Biola, Southern Evangelical Seminary, Denver Seminary and lately Houston Baptist University, just to name a few). I am not aware of any specific statistics, but with all of these schools whose graduates are now entering the world of work and/or ministry, the question of the role of women in apologetics was bound to come up.

The danger in force-feeding faith to your kids

Conversations are dialogues, not monologues, so that belief is being processed, not forced. In the Atlantic study, parents who disallowed discussion raised kids who mimicked but had not internalized the parents’ values, making it easy to rebel against those beliefs when they grew older. Let kids wrestle with tough questions as their faith becomes their own. Don’t be afraid of doubt, as exploration is often a path to richer, deeper faith.

God's Not Dead: Without God Ascending Evolution Seems Impossible

Unguided evolution appears impossible. Non-directed evolution is not just implausible; the theory seems impossible. Biologically sturdy ants and their descendants would not evolve into the top-ten list of endangered species, like a great ape. Strong and resilient bacteria would not evolve into a weak and easily extinct Dodo bird. The so called lower species are usually the ones that are the strongest and most fit to survive. If reproducing, the strongest and greatest number of offspring, is an important means of specie preservation, then the ant and the rat are a couple of the “highest” species.

28 Apologetics has never been more important than it is now - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Apologetics has never been more important than it is now. People throughout our culture, including many of our friends, family members, neighbors, and co-workers, are becoming increasingly secular. They're moving farther and farther from Christian teachings and morality. The Bible mandates that we must be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks (1 Pet. 3:15), so this is not an optional activity for Christians or the church. We must confront the errors of our culture and present in their place the truth and gospel of Christ. So I hope Lee [Strobel] is right about it being a "golden age of apologetics" – and there are many signs that he is – but much more needs to be done.

Why are evangelicals guilty of one in six abortions in America?

Second, Christians murder their own children because they are ashamed of their sin , and believe abortion will cover it. It is, of course, a good thing to be ashamed of our sins. It is also a good thing that they be covered. But God’s Word teaches us that the only way for our sins to be covered is by our confessing them. That is, the repentant confess their sin, seeking forgiveness wisely. The fool hides, or covers his sin, seeking to protect reputation foolishly. God Himself, who sees and knows all things, is the one we must seek to please. And on the earthly sphere He promises that our sins will find us out (Numbers 32:23). Some have argued that due to the temptation toward abortion the church needs to be more accommodating to fornication . While I suppose there may be a church or two somewhere that treats fornication as the unforgivable sin, the church by and large treats fornication as no sin at all. In the Christian subculture fornication scandalizes no one, while getting pregnant while fornicating does. We are called to call sin sin, and again, its answer is not silence, but the proclamation of the blood of Christ.

32 Students Love Answers More Than the Church Loves Answers - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

I had the opportunity to train approximately 150 high school students last week at Summit Worldview Academy in Manitou Springs, Colorado (it was my second trip to Summit this summer). They hold seven 2-week conferences for young people each year, designed specifically to “teach students how to analyze the various ideas that are currently competing for their hearts and minds.” The curriculum is incredibly rigorous and students spend long hours in class each day, listening to Christian case makers, professors, teachers and speakers from all over the country. Some students even take written exams at the end to qualify for college credit (offered through Bryan College as part of a “Contemporary Worldviews” course, Philosophy 111). This is not your typical high school “camp”; it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to learn why Christianity is true and how to develop a Christian worldview rooted in this truth. While there are certainly fun activities scheduled for the students, that’s not why they come. Students come to Summit to be trained .

What the 'Six Types of Atheists' Mean for Christian Outreach - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Not all nonbelievers—be they atheists, agnostics, humanists, secularists, or some mixture of all of these identities—are identical, and we are mistaken if we develop a singular, cookie-cutter approach in our interactions with them. Just as we do not want to be reduced to a simplistic stereotype, we also should not reduce our ideas about nonbelievers to some image developed through media or a few past friendships.

34 Could the Church of the Future Be Constituted by the Atheists of Today? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

One of the amazing things about God is how God is able to transform a person from one pathway to a completely different pathway…a better pathway. I recently spoke to an individual who told me of an inspirational pastor.  This pastor was originally from California and was actively involved in gangs. However, the one-day pastor would have an experience with God through Jesus Christ and would experience a complete turn-around.  The individual now ministers in West Virginia and has adopted children born in tough circumstances to give them a better life.  This should not be surprising, because God has an amazing capacity of turning something good out of something bad.

35 Best of The Poached Egg: Biblical Archaeology - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

36 Discovery of Truth: 10 Apologetics Quotes - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Discovery of truth depends on the heart and will, not just the head and mind. This is why the prime requisite for finding any great truth (like God, or the meaning of life or death, or who we are and what we ought to do, or even finding the right mate and career) is love, passion, questing and questioning. Once we pursue a question with our whole being, as Socrates pursued “know thyself”, we will find answers. Answers are not as hard to come by as we think; and questions, real questioning, is a lot more rare and precious than we think. Finding is not the problem, seeking is.

37 Four Ways God Has Revealed Himself to the World - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The skeptical issue in our culture mostly enters into the religious dialogue in the following way: “In the case of God, who isn’t some material object but a divine being, what kind of evidence should we expect to find? There is a tendency to forget that the Bible stresses that sin can dampen the cognitive faculties that God has given us to find Him. Therefore, sin has damaging consequences on the knowing process (Is. 6:9-10; Zech. 7:11-12; Matt. 13:10-13). Christianity, Judaism, Islam, are all theistic faiths in contrast to pantheism (all is God), polytheism (many gods), and atheism (without God). In this article, we are referring to the theistic God of the Bible. In a classical apologetic argument, the cosmological (including both the horizontal and vertical cosmological argument) point to the theistic God of the Bible. Therefore, the God of the Bible is capable of giving a revelation to mankind through a specific medium. One of the most important themes of the Bible is that since God is free and personal, that he acts on behalf of those whom he loves, and that his actions includes already within history, a partial disclosure of his nature, attributes, and intensions.

38 Has Science Shown Some Things Begin to Exist Without Cause? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

An important premise in some arguments for God’s existence is that a nything that begins to exist has a cause. That is, things that come into being don’t just pop into existence for no reason. There is some cause that explains why that thing started to exist when it did. There is a causal story involving your parents that explains why you exist, for instance, and it would be odd, to say the least, if there weren't. This premise – anything that beings to exist has a cause - seems intuitive, reasonable and attractive to most people. Check out the video below for a neat summary of one argument for God’s existence – the Kalam Cosmological Argument – that features this premise.

39 Convincing Your Friend That They Have A Soul - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Observation 2: Our Identity is Not in our Physical Bodies Think about the following: We are always moving forward in time; with each passing second we are getting older. It is natural to reflect on our current selves and conclude that “this is who I am.” Questions of identity are typically answered by referencing our current physical, mental, environmental, and/or emotional status. Keep in mind, however, that this moment is fleeting. You were once younger, and will very soon be older than you are now. Were  you still “you” when you were 8 years old? Certainly you are the same person, and a 30-year-old man would be quite correct in identifying their childhood self as also being “them.” If the person you’re speaking with lives another 20 years, will they still be the same person? Of course. Your friend will maintain their identity throughout their lives, because it is not tied to a solitary moment (or even entire phase) of life…

The war is against the Enemy, not fellow mankind. We’re on the most important infiltration mission ever, and the smoke, the grit, and the sting of Enemy fire is often discouraging and exhausting. Practicing public apologetics, in particular, is a bold invitation for spiritual warfare. Incessant prayer required.

42 Ask Pastor Matt: "Was the Biblical Flood Necessary? Wasn't It Cruel?" - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

“During the great flood with Noah’s Ark, God wiped out virtually the entire human race to “purge” the earth of evil (at least that’s the story as I’ve come to understand it.) If this was the case I have a problem believing that a merciful, omnipotent God would kill millions of innocent people around the world to achieve this goal. What’s worse, these innocents (men, women, children and babies) not only died, but needlessly suffered a horrific drowning death! This seems extremely inefficient and malevolent to me.”

Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow's Inadvertent Proof for God - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

“[Just] as Darwin and Wallace explained how the apparently miraculous design of living forms could appear without intervention by a supreme being, the multiverse concept can explain the fine tuning of physical law without the need for a benevolent creator who made the Universe for our benefit. Because there is a law like gravity, the Universe can and will create itself from nothing. Spontaneous creation is the reason there is something rather than nothing, why the Universe exists, why we exist.”

Stories of my dad

I remember going downstairs early one morning and walking in on my dad in the living room.  There he was, on his knees, his face buried in his hands, absorbed in silent prayer.  He didn’t know anyone else was up.  So it wasn’t for show.  It was real.  My dad had a real walk with God.  It never occurred to me, not once, to wonder what mattered most to my dad.  It never occurred to me to wonder if Jesus was the Lord of his heart and of our home.  Dad revered the Bible.  He loved the gospel.  He served the church.  He witnessed to our neighbors.  He tithed when he couldn’t afford it.  He set the tone of our home, and our home was a place of joy, honesty and comfort.  Jesus was there.

46 Why You Can Trust Your Bible - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

For example, early copies of the Greek New Testament were composed in an ancient style in which words were written in all capital letters with no spaces, punctuation, or paragraph divisions. A classic illustration of this style is the phrase "GODISNOWHERE." A copyist would have to decide whether the phrase meant "God is now here" or "God is nowhere." Context would determine the meaning of the phrase, so it's not surprising a scribe could occasionally get things wrong. Furthermore, scribes sometimes misspelled words, wrote the same word twice when it should have been written once, or skipped over sections of text because the same words occurred later down the page. These are all examples of unintentional changes.

47 Unbelievable? Four Simple Principles to Determine Ancient Historical Reliability - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

I recently had the opportunity to appear on Unbelievable? with Justin Brierley (the show will air this Saturday, August 24 th 2013). Justin had two skeptics lined up to ask questions about Biblical reliability and offer specific, detailed challenges related to portions of the Gospels of Luke, Mark and Matthew. Are you prepared to answer every challenge that might be offered about the historicity of the Gospels? Do you even know every challenge that might be offered? How do you respond when someone offers a challenge for which you don’t have immediate access to the all the pertinent data? This particular episode of Unbelievable? illustrated an important principle for all of us as Christian Case Makers. Historical challenges are often complicated, nuanced and detailed, and while it is nearly impossible to remember all the data related to every objection, there are four overarching principles of witness reliability appropriate to the task. These are the same four principles I’ve offered as a template in Cold Case Christianity . I used this template to evaluate the Gospels when I was

Renewing Your Mind | Natural Theology (Part 1) | June 14, 2014

Our society has embraced moral relativism with a vengeance, at least verbally, but that any laws exist at all is a testimony to the existence of a supreme, objective authority. Human beings write laws because we know instinctively that there is a proper moral order to the universe. We make law because God’s law exists, in some sense, on the hearts of all people. Today’s passage leads us to this conclusion. Romans 2:14 cannot be read as giving the Gentiles the right to choose what is right and wrong from a variety of competing options. All Paul means is that the ethical standards of even the non-believers prove that all people are made in the Lord’s image and therefore have His moral principles on their consciences. Even those without access to Scripture outlaw the killing of innocent human beings and have clear determinations of when killing is murder and when it is not. The law of God on their hearts tells them there are cases when killing is clearly wrong, even if they do not always interpret this law rightly.

10 ways to love your transgender neighbor

On the “bullying” front, I would be careful about allying ourselves with any generic “anti-bullying” organization or lobby, since their goals are usually going to wind up being very different from ours. For many of these groups, “anti-bullying” is code for “furthering the normalization of sexual perversion at every available opportunity.” It’s not just about making sure gay teens aren’t beaten up behind the jungle gym. It’s also about marginalizing and punishing anybody who refuses to participate in the overall illusion of normalcy that homosexual activists are trying to create. This is especially relevant to transgender, where it’s increasingly considered “bullying” to, say, refuse to refer to the person by his preferred pronoun. Privately, have your own standards for what counts as bullying, and obviously if you encounter a situation where you can physically intervene in a bona fide case, do so. But publicly, I wouldn’t recommend trying to “find common ground” with these kinds of organizations.
