‘Hate Will Never Win’: James Corden Pays Tribute to Orlando Victims at The Tonys

Before last night’s Tony Award ceremony, host James Corden issued a brief tribute to victims of a shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando that left 50 dead, and at least 53 injured. His message was simple: “Hate will never win.” You can watch the show's opener below.

Right and Wrong Reactions to the Tragic Night Club Massacre in Orlando | The Stream

It doesn’t matter if these people were at a gay club or in an office building. They are fellow human beings who were murdered in cold blood. Whether they were murdered in a straight bar, a sports stadium, or a park they were murdered nonetheless and without any justification.

Orlando shooting: Death toll updated to 50 by Orlando police as Omar Mateen named as gunman

After the sadness lifted briefly, and the songs by the gay male chorus stopped, we stood there not knowing quite what to do. As one, we decided to try desperately to find our friends in the crowd and go to a bar. Another way in which it was like Pride. We spilled out into Soho, away from the vigil but holding the fact we had been part of something special with us.

Piecing America's 'Fractured Republic' Back Together

When I put down “The Fractured Republic,” I found myself thinking about the future. Post-war American politics encouraged cultural and economic freedoms that, to one degree or another, all of us wanted. Levin is right that the next generation of politics won’t be able to turn back the clock. Our political future will have to presume a globalized free-market system that tends to dissolve strong social bonds, as well as a culture of self-expression unlikely to tolerate much in the way of moral authority. That said, his book reinforced my view that the political party that can find its way to a new, workable, and believable rhetoric of solidarity, one suited to our present circumstances, will dominate the next generation.

Can We Construct The Entire New Testament From the Writings of the Church Fathers? | Cold Case Christianity

I’ve often heard it said that the New Testament is well referenced and attested by the Early Church Fathers of the 1 st , 2 nd and 3 rd Century. As an example of this, some researchers have cited Sir David Dalrymple (1726 – 1792AD) a Scottish judge and historian who wrote three volumes on early Christian Church history called, “Remains of Christian Antiquity”. Dalrymple was an expert in the writings of the early Church. It’s alleged that after careful examination of the writings of the Fathers he wrote, “…as I possessed all the existing works of the Fathers of the second and third centuries, I commenced to search, and up to this time I have found the entire New Testament, except eleven verses.” That’s quite a claim if you stop and think about it. As I was preparing an article, I decided to investigate this statement to find its source. I simply wanted to cite Dalrymple properly. After purchasing Dalrymple’s books and manuscripts on this topic, I came to the conclusion that he has either been improperly referenced or inaccurately cited. I simply cannot confirm the quotation from Dalrymple that is offered repeatedly by Christian Case Makers.

Ramadan Massacre at Gay Nightclub in Orlando (David Wood) Early in the morning on June 12th, 2016, American Muslim Omar Mateen opened fire at "The Pulse," a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Mateen killed around 50 people and injured dozens more while shouting “Allahu Akbar!” Before the attack, he called 911 to declare his allegiance to ISIS.

Little Eyes Are Watching in Worship

But when those eyes see in the adults around them a passion for Jesus that seems at once both unreasonable and yet remarkably genuine, then the doorway to their hearts might be cracked open by the Holy Spirit. A little light might begin to shine through as they struggle to understand this great power that holds sway over mom and dad and the rest of the grownups.

Trump Answers: "Who Do You Say Jesus Is?"

“I will be asking for forgiveness, but hopefully I won’t have to be asking for much forgiveness. As you know, I am Presbyterian and Protestant. I’ve had great relationships and developed even greater relationships with ministers. We have tremendous support from the clergy. I think I will be doing very well during the election with evangelicals and with Christians. In the Middle East—and this is prior to the migration—you had almost no chance of coming into the United States. Christians from Syria, of which there were many, many of their heads…chopped off. If you were a Muslim from Syria, it was one of the easiest places to come in (to the U.S.). I thought that was deplorable. I’m going to treat my religion, which is Christian, with great respect and care.”

Youth Ministry Should Be Unapologetically Apologetic

Of course there is no role for apologetics in keeping youth engaged with church, you might say. You can’t argue people into the Kingdom of God! If young people want a spirituality that is experiential and relational, why focus on one that is intellectual? Apologetics was for an older generation.

Pastors Lead by Example

I also asked Sanchez about what we might call “the forgotten qualification” of hospitality. Growing up, I knew of pastors who led very private lives and rarely, if ever, had members in their home. Most members seemed to see this as acceptable. But later I discovered that this problem wasn’t confined to my experience, but is a problem in many churches in America. Rarely, when examining a man for elder ministry do other elders ask, “Is he hospitable?” It seems to be considered a non-essential. However, Paul disagrees. He places it in the list of basic qualifications without a disclaimer. He gives us no reason to believe that it’s less important than the others.

A Meditation on the Orlando Shooting

W e at Christianity Today are deeply grieved by the shooting in Orlando that killed 49 people. Our heartfelt sympathies go out to friends and family of the victims. In this case, the attack was targeted at one group, and so our prayers go up for gays, lesbians, and other sexual minorities who now live with a heightened sense of fear. We are glad to hear of so many Christians, from many theological persuasions, reaching out to comfort them in their grief.

23 Evangelical Angst

I run into this kind of angst all the time, especially on social media among my evangelical friends. Often, what I encounter goes beyond proper concern about cultural trends, giving way to a sense of hopelessness, fear, and more than a little anger. Evangelicals are beginning to see ourselves as a beleaguered minority.

This realization was like being struck by lightning. I searched for verses on homosexuality and found 1 Corinthians 6:9–10. I’d read these and other verses like them before. I’d argued against them to those who opposed me, but suddenly I could no longer argue. It was clear. I was in the “will not enter the kingdom of God” lineup. I was lost, wretched, and blatantly opposed to him. But the next verse said, “And such were some of you” (1 Cor. 6:11). Clearly, the Lord could save me. He’d extended his hand to me, the worst of sinners (1 Tim. 1:15). I grasped his hand by faith, and I felt overwhelmingly awful and grateful. Although I’d ignored him and lived foolishly, he showed me mercy when I deserved nothing but justice.

Is Christianity the Only Way?

What if there was another religion’s miracle claim that seemed to be genuine? Even if we encountered such a thing, we would have to look at what message was being given. If the message given by the miracle worker was contradictory or did not align with what we know about reality, we can still reject it. If a person worked a miracle and then told us the moon is made of green cheese, we could still reject it because we know it is not true. Likewise, if Joseph Smith claimed to have seen miracles, but gives a message claiming that God was once a sinful man before he became God, we can reject such claims outright, regardless of any miracles. An eternal God cannot have a beginning or He would not be eternal. One cannot be created then become uncreated. Therefore we know Mormonism is false, regardless of whether Joseph was actually part of a miracle.

The Mother of a Down Syndrome Daughter Sent a Letter to the Doctor Who Advised Abortion

I’m not angry. I’m not bitter. I’m really just sad. I’m sad the tiny beating hearts you see every day don’t fill you with a perpetual awe. I’m sad the intricate details and the miracle of those sweet little fingers and toes, lungs and eyes and ears don’t always give you pause. I’m sad you were so very wrong to say a baby with Down syndrome would decrease our quality of life. And I’m heartbroken you might have said that to a mommy even today. But I’m mostly sad you’ll never have the privilege of knowing my daughter, Emersyn.

Good Books for Warm Days - The Summer Reading List for 2016 -

The image of Douglas MacArthur was largely the creation of MacArthur himself, who understood himself to be at the center of the world. His father, a Civil War hero and top-ranking Army general, set for young Douglas MacArthur an example of service and military leadership that would be daunting to any son, but Douglas MacArthur would eventually become Supreme Commander of Allied forces in the Pacific during World War II and would wear five stars on his shoulder. He was indeed a military genius, but he was also vainglorious and egotistical — a combination that demanded careful handling. Borneman’s achievement is to tell the story of World War II in the Pacific through the story of MacArthur, and to make clear that MacArthur’s success cannot be explained without the leadership of his commander, General George C. Marshall. Marshall was perhaps the one man who understood that MacArthur was essential to victory in the Pacific, but also understood that the great general could also be his own most dangerous enemy. Borneman describes Douglas MacArthur as “the most intriguing military leader of the twentieth century.

Amid ‘Evangelism Crisis,’ Southern Baptists Bring In $400 Million More

“I have been talking about this evangelism crisis in our convention during my presidency, trying to move us forward through this season of challenge,” he wrote. “The key question for Southern Baptists is: Are we pushing back on lostness in America? I think we know the answer is no. We are losing our nation spiritually. It comes back to my theme for the last two to three years: The greatest need in America is the next Great Spiritual Awakening.”

Why Are So Many Christians Bored with the Bible?

Unfortunately, many Christians love the idea of the Bible, but not really the Bible itself. We love having a Bible close by, even within reach, but don’t make time to open it on an average day. We talk about Bible reading like we talk about cutting calories or cleaning our house. We’re grateful for the results, but we don’t wake up dying to do it again. It sounds like a fine thing to do, until we have to choose what we won’t do in order to make time for it.

Orlando Shooting

I couldn't agree more. It's a human issue from which no one is immune. Pastor Martin Luther King Jr. and Christianity going about condemning the dreaming up of and the committing of crimes like this, and backing it up with a "why" that need not equivocate in its ontology of love's timeless self-giving is common place. Which is why the time is taken to make such points. Your own preferred atheist crowd has its own fringe elements vocally supporting the atmospheres you speak of, which is echoed by fringe elements in other mindsets. It's up to each to explain their on ontology (in the Christian's case) or perhaps their own Noble Lie (in your crowd's case). Either way, at the end of the day, it's a work in need of doing by everyone.

High achievement, no morals - Family & Society - WORLD

America has managed to successfully create a generation of young adults who excel in academics and athletics but have no moral conscience. Former Stanford University student Brock Turner is an excellent example. He represents an entire class of men on every college campus in America—that is, high achievers with no morals. Turner, 20, was convicted in March and recently sentenced to six months jail time for intent to commit rape of an intoxicated/unconscious person, penetration of an intoxicated person, and penetration of an unconscious person. Turner’s father protested his son’s punishment as too severe for merely “20 minutes of action.”

Just One Verse

Set out to explore just the domain represented by Jesus and after many days we will find ourselves neither closer to the horizon’s edge before us nor nearer the starry expanse above us. For when we ponder the Infinite taking the form of the finite and the Immortal clothed with mortality; as we consider that the eternal Second Person of the Trinity, through whom and for whom all things were created (Colossians 1:16), was found in the unimaginable constraint of historical time, occupying the miniscule space of a human form (Philippians 2:8), we are traveling a terrain of mystery immeasurable. In the hollow of this single word is a world without end.

The Glorious Godhead and Proto-Arian Bulls

Trueman and Goligher did not hold back, God bless ‘em: they say that ERAS is akin to “idolatry,” to Islam’s view of God, that we have fallen prey to “neo-tritheism,” that we are “constructing a new deity,” and that we hold “a position seriously out of step with the historic catholic faith” that is “a likely staging post to Arianism.” Who knew that three, nay four, wild proto-Arian bulls were running rampant in the Lord’s vineyard? But here our bullishness must end, and we must come to heel.

After Orlando, Can We Still Weep Together? - Russell Moore

We woke up Sunday morning to news of the worst mass shooting in American history, as a terrorist murdered and injured over a hundred people in a gay nightclub in Orlando. In the aftermath, we’ve seen some of the best aspects of America: people lining up, for example, to give blood for the victims. We’ve also seen some of the worst—as the aftermath turned into an excuse for social media wars over everything from gun control to presidential politics. What I wonder is whether the country still has the capacity to grieve, together, in moments of national crisis.

How You Can Help Orlando

It’s easy for some to write off prayer as actionless words in the face of tragedy. But for Christians, prayer couldn’t be farther from inaction. And so in the face of this shooting, Christians need to pray: pray for the victims who are now fighting for their lives in hospitals. Pray for families and friends who lost someone last night. Pray for the City of Orlando and its law enforcement officials and first responders. And pray for the Church, that in Orlando and around the country Christians will be those first to speak words of care and reach out in compassion to those affected.

What Were the Disciples Saying About Jesus Prior to Writing the Gospels?

Paul was converted to Christianity on the road to Damascus, where Jesus appeared to him and radically changed the course of Paul’s life. Formerly a devout Jew charged with identifying and destroying the fledgling Christians, Paul became a committed follower of Jesus and eventually penned more New Testament books than any other author. Most scholars think Jesus appeared to Paul within two to three years of Jesus’ resurrection and ascension (if, for sake of clarity, we date the resurrection of Jesus at 33AD, Paul would have been converted between 34-35AD). Paul ultimately traveled as a missionary and wrote about the historicity and deity of Jesus.

Can Delhi save itself from its toxic air?

Delhi is trying to do just that. Long before it was saddled with the mantle of having some of the world's worst air, the city and the Supreme Court of India took several steps to alleviate pollution. Vehicle emissions came down in the early 2000s, thanks to decisions to remove lead from petrol, improve vehicle-emission standards and pull old commercial vehicles off the roads. Around the same time, the city implemented a monumental conversion of the public-transportation fleet, including buses and the city's zippy three-wheel auto-rickshaws, away from gasoline and diesel engines to ones fuelled by cleaner compressed natural gas. In 2002, the Delhi Metro subway system opened its first line, improving public-transportation options. All but two of the coal-based thermal power plants in the city were converted to natural gas, and many industries, including brick kilns, were moved beyond Delhi's bounds.

Mourning Orlando, Longing for Truth and Love

Regardless, Islam itself has always taught that gays should be executed. Muhammad commanded: “If you find anyone doing as Lot’s people did, kill the one who does it, and the one to whom it is done” (Sunan Abu Daud 4447). Imams who have been trained in these Islamic teachings are teaching in our communities. Just three months ago, an imam who is well known for proclaiming Muhammad’s teachings on homosexuality spoke in Orlando. In a prior speech about homosexuals he was noted to have said, “Let’s get rid of them now” ( video  and  news article ). The imam spoke at an Islamic center that is less than 20 miles from the site of today’s atrocities. Some American-born Muslims, such as Omar, are taking teachings like these at face value, listening to their imams and following Muhammad.
