The Avett Brothers New Single ‘Satan Pulls the Strings’ Is a Different Kind of the Same Avett

The Avett Brothers just released a new single from their much-anticipated album, True Sadness, which drops June 24. And this new song sounds pretty different from what we’re used to with the brothers Avett. Check it out: This is a different sound for Avett. Seth Avett told Billboard: “Satan Pulls the Strings” started as a quiet and calm Depression-era banjo song. And somehow in the studio, it blossomed into a genre that I don't even have a name for … the frenzied yet mechanical energy of it is a first for the band. Still the single, "Satan Pulls the Strings," keeps the real-life, emotional transparency that makes The Avett Brothers music connect with audiences and their folky tradition. It also keeps with what seems to be the theme of the perhaps-appropriately named album (True Sadness): With lyrics like “My heart is in the puppet box and Satan pulls the strings,” the track will fit right in with previously released single “Divorce Separation Blues” and the title track. The band always been capable of real emotional depth in their music though. The Avett Brothers recently spoke with RELEVANT about their faith and even the band’s personal struggles. For the new album, The Avett Brothers worked again with the legendary Rick Rubin (he’s helped out the likes of The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kanye and Adele), and have taken the sound in a new direction, which is evident on the band’s earlier single, “Ain’t No Man.”

This Lunatic Built His Own Deathstar Out of 5,000 Fireworks

The Internet’s favorite amateur inventor, Colin Furze, was very excited about accumulating 3 million YouTube subscribers. To celebrate, he did what any reasonable garage engineer would do: He created his own Deathstar with 5,000 fireworks he bought online. Yes, this is the same man who has made a hoverbike, a flame-throwing guitar and the fastest baby stroller on the planet. In other words, his 3 million subscribers are well-earned.

If you want to question the morality of the Bible, what basis does that morality have? There can be a serious contradiction within atheist criticisms. Dawkins wrote: "In a universe of electrons and selfish genes, blind physical forces and genetic replication, some people are going to get hurt, other people are going to get lucky, and you won't find any rhyme or reason in it, nor any justice. The universe that we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil, no good, nothing but pitiless indifference."

Good Books for Warm Days - The Summer Reading List for 2016 - AlbertMohler.com

The image of Douglas MacArthur was largely the creation of MacArthur himself, who understood himself to be at the center of the world. His father, a Civil War hero and top-ranking Army general, set for young Douglas MacArthur an example of service and military leadership that would be daunting to any son, but Douglas MacArthur would eventually become Supreme Commander of Allied forces in the Pacific during World War II and would wear five stars on his shoulder. He was indeed a military genius, but he was also vainglorious and egotistical — a combination that demanded careful handling. Borneman’s achievement is to tell the story of World War II in the Pacific through the story of MacArthur, and to make clear that MacArthur’s success cannot be explained without the leadership of his commander, General George C. Marshall. Marshall was perhaps the one man who understood that MacArthur was essential to victory in the Pacific, but also understood that the great general could also be his own most dangerous enemy. Borneman describes Douglas MacArthur as “the most intriguing military leader of the twentieth century.

8 The Why? Series | RZIM

One of the greatest objections to the existence of the Christian God is the presence of suffering and evil in the world. The question of why a loving God would allow so much suffering is common to all of us. Whether we experience what Os Guinness describes as the “lash” of evil against us, or the impact of sickness or the effects of a natural disaster, the question of suffering demands an answer.

9 ‘Me Before You’

The Fearless Call of Asian Americans in Christian Hip-Hop

Many of today’s Asian hip-hop acts also share a kinship as second or third-generation Americans. Some, like CL, grew up with immigrant parents who did not speak English until years after their arrival on US soil. Others, like HeeSun, were adopted by parents whose heritage differed from their birthplace. Yet in both cases, these artists were raised on one of America’s most popular exports: The culture and music of hip-hop.

15
Apologetics Is What?

Most dictionaries use the word apologist to mean any person who argues in defense of some position or cause. If we use the word in this broad sense, it is obvious that some people act as apologists for such things as democracy, communism, capitalism, vegetarianism, and aerobics. While almost any position or belief may have its apologists, I use the term to mean the philosophical defense of the Christian faith. Someone engaged in apologetics intends to show that A (some believer) is within his rights in believing the essential tenets of the Christian faith, or that B (some unbeliever) is mistaken in rejecting essential Christian beliefs.

Millennials Are the Most Stressed-Out Generation. And That’s a Spiritual Problem

We’ve gotten so used to stress that for some of us, it has begun to shape how we think about God. At the root of this type of stress response is, ultimately, unbelief. A lifestyle of stress and its subsequent coping mechanisms say “God is not in control.” It’s helpless, hopeless and joyless, and, frankly, an offensive response to the Gospel. If what God says is true, and Jesus died to carry the burdens too heavy for us to bear, we should be some of the happiest people on earth. So while we may not be able to change our circumstances, it’s time to change our perspective on them—for the good of our health, our relationships and most of all, our spiritual lives.

The U.S. State Department claims it will take “generations” to process the Republican National Committee’s request for copies of Hillary Clinton’s emails from her time as secretary of state. In March, the RNC sued the State Department to get the agency to release emails from Clinton’s top former aides. Last week, a federal judge ordered the emails to be released, but the State Department responded with a court filing claiming it would take 75 years to completely fulfill the request. In Tuesday’s briefing, State Department spokesman Mark Toner defended that estimate: “It’s a very broad range, involving a number of people, over a period of, I think, four years. And it’s not an outlandish estimation, believe it or not.” The State Department claims the delay is due to a current backlog of Freedom of Information Act requests and the complexity of retrieving the documents. The department says it can only process about 500 pages a month, and at that rate, the request would take generations to fulfill.

20 quotes from Baptists on religious liberty:

Baptists have one consistent record concerning liberty throughout all their long and eventful history. They have never been a party to oppression of conscience. They have forever been the unwavering champions of liberty, both religious and civil. Their contention now, is, and has been, and, please God, must ever be, that it is the natural and fundamental and indefeasible right of every human being to worship God or not, according to the dictates of his conscience, and, as long as he does not infringe upon the rights of others, he is to be held accountable alone to God for all religious beliefs and practices. Our contention is not for mere toleration, but for absolute liberty. There is a wide difference between toleration and liberty. Toleration implies that somebody falsely claims the right to tolerate. Toleration is a concession, while liberty is a right. Toleration is a matter of expediency, while liberty is a matter of principle. Toleration is a gift from God. It is the consistent and insistent contention of our Baptist people, always and everywhere, that religion must be forever voluntary and uncoerced, and that it is not the perogative of any power, whether civil or ecclesiastical, to compel men to conform to any religious creed or form of worship, or to pay taxes for the support of a religious organization to which they do not believe.

Reformed, Romanist, or Rumor? A Response to Dr. Scott Oliphint

Recently there were some concerns raised by friend of Southern Evangelical Seminary, Dr. Scott Oliphint. Dr. Oliphint spoke for approximately 45 minutes during his presentation titled Reformed or Romanist: (Protestant or Papist) .   His representations are inaccurate, and this page is to serve as the beginning of a dialog about the issues our Christian brother has raised. We hope that you find this engagement beneficial to your own walk and understanding of the Christian faith and the God in whom we “live move and have our being” (Acts 17:28).

How God Messed Up My Happy Atheist Life

There are times I feel a bit like a medieval peasant, in that I believe wholly in God now, but don’t always do what he wants, or, like Scarlett O’Hara, put hard conversations with him off until I’ve done the thing I wanted to do. It’s a thrumming backdrop to the rest of my life. My Christian conversion has granted me no simplicity. It has complicated all of my relationships, changed how I feel about money, messed up my public persona, and made me wonder if I should be on Twitter at all.

Mourning Orlando, Longing for Truth and Love

Regardless, Islam itself has always taught that gays should be executed. Muhammad commanded: “If you find anyone doing as Lot’s people did, kill the one who does it, and the one to whom it is done” (Sunan Abu Daud 4447). Imams who have been trained in these Islamic teachings are teaching in our communities. Just three months ago, an imam who is well known for proclaiming Muhammad’s teachings on homosexuality spoke in Orlando. In a prior speech about homosexuals he was noted to have said, “Let’s get rid of them now” ( video  and  news article ). The imam spoke at an Islamic center that is less than 20 miles from the site of today’s atrocities. Some American-born Muslims, such as Omar, are taking teachings like these at face value, listening to their imams and following Muhammad.

Little Eyes Are Watching in Worship

But when those eyes see in the adults around them a passion for Jesus that seems at once both unreasonable and yet remarkably genuine, then the doorway to their hearts might be cracked open by the Holy Spirit. Would Hollywood Want the Disabled Dead?

You may not believe in God. You don’t have to, and I can’t make you. But I do, and because of that I believe in the value of all people. I believe we are all made in his image and likeness. That’s why I believe all people are worth something. If you believe that people only get their value from each other, then people can take that away. But if our value comes from God, then nobody has the right to say someone who walks is worth more than someone who doesn’t.

Four Reasons We Don’t Share the Gospel

So if the word of God — the good news of Jesus Christ — inherently possesses the power to increase and multiply through the work of the Holy Spirit, then why is evangelism so difficult? Why don’t we share the gospel more than we do? We need to ask if we are a fresh wind that causes the seed of the good news to spread, or instead, obstacles that keep it from moving further and faster. Unfortunately, many of us are more wall than breeze. But why?

Born This Way

Though Christians are accused of holding bigoted and inhumane beliefs about sexuality, this is not true. Our view of sexuality is rooted not in fear or self-righteous prudery. It is rooted in our high view of human dignity as God’s image-bearers. That’s why we do not believe that sexuality defines humanity, nor do we believe humanity defines sexuality. Being human, and thus made in the likeness of God, is so noble a thing that God alone reserves the right to confer the definition of our true personhood. We do not say with Lady Gaga, “I’m beautiful in my way.” We say, “I am beautiful in God’s way.” To the degree that we abandon God’s way, we abandon our beauty.

There Are Good Reasons to Believe the Gospels Are True, Even if the Eyewitnesses Waited Years to Write Them

You Can Trust the Account If There Is a Good Explanation for the Delay in Reporting When I begin to investigate a cold-case murder, I contact all the witnesses who were interviewed by the original detectives. Along the way I sometimes discover a new witness who wasn’t identified during the original investigation. Witnesses such as these will make claims about what they observed, even though 30-35 years may now have passed since the crime occurred. Why should I trust these additional witnesses? Why didn’t they come forward earlier? A lengthy delay in reporting may be a reason to doubt the veracity of a witness, or it may not. If, for example, the witness was unaware of the importance of his or her observation, he or she may not have thought to contact the police to be interviewed. Sometimes a witness moves away immediately after a crime occurs. Sometimes a witness is afraid to cooperate with the police. If there is a good reason why a witness’ statement is late, the statement can still be valid in the eyes of a jury.

If you have needs in your life that are not being met, it’s not God’s fault. You’re not waiting on God. He’s waiting on you! The problem is not that God doesn’t want to meet your need; the problem is that you never ask him for it. James 4:2 says, “. . . You do not have because you do not ask God.”

Should I Attend a Homosexual Wedding If the Service Is Completely Secular?

I do have a friend who has been there. She had a dear relative who was like a daughter to her throughout the girl’s childhood. She grew up, moved away, and began engaging in homosexuality. She knew the faith and beliefs of her Aunt, and they had a few discussions about it that were always awkward and difficult, but love remained between them. My friend lovingly told her what she believed about it in truth. They maintained their relationship. The niece decided to marry her lesbian partner, and asked her aunt if she would make them her famous wedding mints, attend the wedding, and sent her an invitation. It was very difficult. My friend decided to make the mints for her niece, and offered them to her as a token of love that had always existed in her for her niece, and to tell her she will always love her and want the very best for her life. But she also told her she could not attend the wedding because she believed only in God’s design for marriage, and could not celebrate this choice with her. It was difficult for her to say, and a difficult thing to hear. My friend is not sure she should have offered the mints, but knew with certainty that her stance on not attending the wedding was the right stance to take.

How the NBA Went All-Out Gay | The Stream

On the broader point, how should the believer in Christ react to specific acts of sinful rebellion on the part of unbelievers? A shrug of the shoulders and an “Ah, well, he’s a worldling, what do you expect?” Christ commands men and women everywhere to repent and believe and they ignore him at their eternal peril. Individual Christians may not have the prophetic charge that God gave to Ezekiel, but God’s warning to that watchman not to neglect his responsibility to tell the rebels of Israel to heed the coming judgment (chapter 33) should sober all of us. For indeed the celebration of sin and rebellion does have eternal and meaningful consequences if it sears the conscience and hardens the unbeliever in his sin.
