Apologetics Leads to True Worship

Apologetics and worship? Aren’t those mutually exclusive? Christian apologetics, the reasoned defense of the faith, is often seen as rather dry and clinical – a very cold, sterile niche of Christianity set aside for those kinda weird nerds or those that are a little more quarrelsome than they should be. Meanwhile, worship is of the heart, not the head, right? Well, this nerd begs to differ. Worship is certainly more than feelings. I would dare say that many mistake the beat of a good tune for the moving of the Spirit of God, but I digress….

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Episode 075: Film Nostalgia & Heaven - Christian Research Institute

“It seems that most popular new movies these days are sequels, prequels, reboots, or remakes. The reason Hollywood seems unoriginal is because, when it comes to films, we prefer nostalgia to novelty. Every human has a basic desire for how things are actually meant to be. Nevertheless, this ideal is perverted by sin to the extent that, more often than not, our desires themselves are wayward. The reason sequels, reboots, and remakes become mixed up in this desire is because our broken world is deficient to satisfy our hunger. Instead, we attach the desire to something more tangible, but still vague enough to provide an ineffable hope, like memories of feelings we have had during certain times in our past when things seemed just right. We are drawn to sequels and prequels because they promise to take us back to a place we remember enjoying. We are drawn to remakes because they promise to recreate encounters with characters and stories that once gave us comfort.”

Three Good Reasons to Celebrate Your Christian Worldview | Cold Case Christianity

I had the great honor of speaking at the National Religious Broadcasters Apologetics Conference two weeks ago, along with Frank Turek , Abdu Murray , Alex McFarland , Stephen C. Meyer , Ed Stetzer and Troy Miller . In case you weren’t aware, the NRB Network (available on Direct TV) features many Christian Case Making programs (including Cold-Case Christianity ). Troy Miller is the President and CEO of the network, and with the help of Arline Bell (the Director of Programming), the network has forged a new path for Christian programming. This is definitely not your parent’s Christian television network. NRB TV is filled with great Christian teaching and Case Making programs. I am delighted to be a small part of the line-up. At lunch, Troy shared the results of a recent viewer survey in which people who watch the NRB Network reported what they liked about it. High on their list were two responses: When using a single word to describe what they enjoy about the programming, many viewers said “orthodoxy”. People who watch NRB TV love the fact the programs argue for an orthodox, conservative view of Christianity.

The overwhelming majority of scholars do not believe that eyewitnesses nor associates of eyewitnesses wrote the Gospels and Paul mentions very little about the historical Jesus in his letters. In addition, most scholars believe that the anonymous authors of the Gospels were writing in a genre of literature (Greco-Roman religious biographies) that allowed for extensive embellishments of the facts. Therefore, even though it is quite probable that Jesus existed, was an apocalyptic preacher, that he irritated the Jewish authorities, that he was arrested and crucified by the Romans, that he was buried, and that shortly after his death some of his followers believed that he had appeared to them in some fashion…the stories of turning water into wine, feeding five thousand, walking on water, raising people from the dead, earthquakes upon his death, and sightings of his literal walking/talking corpse may well be literary fiction. Probability tells us that these stories are not historical.

There’s one thing we can be sure of, though: Making abortion legal will not make abortion moral. What’s right and wrong is not determined by a vote, and what’s legal is not necessarily what’s moral. The only thing we learned from Ireland’s vote on May 25 was that the majority of Ireland’s people voted to make abortion legal. But it is grotesque and immoral to kill innocent human beings in the womb today, and it always will be.

4 Simple Ways To Help You Read the Bible Better - Jonathan Morrow

Two quick tips here. When you read the Bible you need to understand the historical backdrop of the text. For example, the Old Testament needs to be understood in light of the Ancient Near East. And the New Testament needs to be understood in light of a largely Jewish mindset emerging in a world heavily influenced by Greco-Roman Culture.

Why It’s Wrong to Say the Bible Is Pro-Slavery

“The Bible is pro-slavery.” It’s a common charge these days. Part of the New Atheist attack on religion, it also comes from various progressive circles in order to defend certain social views (in line with the so-called redemptive-movement hermeneutic ). The claim is not incomprehensible. It has some apparent, face-value support—and not just in Old Testament law regulations, but in New Testament epistles written by the very apostles of Jesus Christ: Ephesians 6:5: “Bondservants, obey your earthly masters.” Colossians 3:22: “Bondservants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters.” 1 Peter 2:18: “Servants, be subject to your masters.” How should Christians respond to this concern? It’s a complicated issue that one brief article cannot resolve, but here are several initial appeals that may be helpful to at least draw attention to its complexity. Defining ‘Slavery’ When we read verses like Ephesians 6:5, Colossians 3:22, and 1 Peter 2:18, we hear the common English translation “slave” in light of our own historical context. We typically think of race-based, chattel slavery in which the slave is the property of the master and lacks any legal rights.

Apologetics: Jesus of Faith, Jesus of History, or Jesus of Eyewitness Testimony?

The result of this discovery—at least in Aslan’s estimation—is that the New Testament Gospels should be treated as texts that convey something other than “history.” Aslan is not, of course, suggesting that the Gospels themselves are somehow non-historical documents. Clearly, the New Testament Gospels are real documents that emerged at particular times in ancient history. What Aslan is claiming is the existence of a virtually unbridgeable gap between the stories the Gospels tell about Jesus and the actual events of history.

Groundbreaking Paper Shows Thousands of New Genes Needed for the Origin of Animals | Evolution News

Thus both Meyer and Marshall were right that dGRNs needed to be wired to build animals — but they were right in the most devastating manner for Darwinism, namely that the rewiring of the dGRNS was mediated by entirely new genes. The paper’s demonstration that thousands of new genes would have been required during the origin of animals is nothing short of a spectacular vindication of Meyer’s perspective on this question, and a strong falsification of Marshall’s viewpoint.

‘First Reformed’: 2018’s Most Thought-Provoking Film So Far

Whereas Abundant Life is tempted to minimize the cost of discipleship and downplay the justice implications of the gospel (especially because its biggest tithers are conservative business tycoons), First Reformed—a church that was once a stop on the Underground Railroad—is tempted to focus exclusively on justice, trading piety for political activism and worshipful joy for partisan rage. The two churches represent the equally problematic temptations of “cheap grace” nominalism (Abundant Life) and theological liberalism (First Reformed)—two active fronts in the current battle for the soul of evangelicalism.

‘The Faith of Donald J. Trump’: A Book Review

Since the advent of Jerry Falwell’s Moral Majority in 1979, Weems’s religious tradition of exalting politicians has been rejuvenated. A specially blessed American nation is central to the faith of many Christian Republican insiders. Thus, their favorite leaders—from Washington and Jefferson to Reagan and Trump—must necessarily be men of genuine devotion. However, squeezing Trump into this pious mold may present the greatest challenge yet for Christian America’s partisans.

8 Contrasting Signs of an Insecure Leader

So what’s the antidote? How do we normalize our leadership away from extremes? Supernaturally, it begins with a re-centering of our identity around Christ. Only the security we find in his gospel—where sinners are justified freely forever, united to Christ to be seated with him in the heavenly places in every moment, and empowered by the Holy Spirit to obey God and bear godly fruit—can help us battle the insecurities of the flesh, whether they manifest themselves in aggression or passivity, arrogance or false humility.

Too Few Pastors Spoke Up. It’s the Real Reason We’re in This Mess Today | The Stream

As for knowing any churches that refuse to perform marriage for folk who have divorced for shallow reasons, I can’t say I do – not because there aren’t any, but because I don’t know what criteria local churchesministers use for agreeingrefusing to perform marriages. It is further complicated by the fact that nonbelievers who divorce may come to Christ then seek to remarry. Should they be permitted to marry, or are they bound to seek reunion with their former spouse? I know of one couple where the wife’s husband abandoned her for another women – valid grounds for divorce, and her second husband had divorced his then wife whilst not walking with the Lord. The pair had an amazing witness, and walked strongly with the Lord ’til the husband passed away. I would contrast this with those who call themselves Christian then seek a divorce.

Defending Truth in an Age of Confusion: Why Apologetics Matters - LogosTalk

Like most people, the first time I heard the word “apologetics” I was befuddled. I was driving down Interstate 5 in Southern California en route to work at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel, and for the life of me, I couldn’t understand why there was such a stress for Christians to apologize. After showing up at work, I asked a fellow Christian what the word meant—and that’s when I discovered, to my relief, that apologetics means “to defend the faith.”

28 What Sustains Missions in the Hardest Places?

There are only foolish reasons to support missions unless there is something we cannot see that matters more than what we can see. We long for that unspeakable beauty — we go out not just serving those in need, but seeking that full vision of the highest happiness. With longing and joy in worship, we go on mission ensured of the promise that as we seek the heavenly Jerusalem, we will appear before our God (Psalm 84:7; Hebrews 11:13–16). Missions is quite simply a pursuit of God who is in heaven.

A Simple Case for Religious Liberty

The heart is the tension between different types of liberty. Fifty years ago people cited religion to justify denying others the right to interracial marriage. When the courts weighed in favour of the latter, was that a blow to religious liberty? Most now would argue it was a blow in favour of the rights of interracial couples. It didn’t mean people valued religious liberty any less than they did before, they just recognised it couldn’t be used as a justification to deny a black woman the right to marry a white man. Similarly, laws for gay marriage were about recognising the rights of a man to marry another man etc. It wasn’t about denigrating religious rights. If you claim it’s your religious right to burn down my house, I’m not opressing your rights if I put out the flames.

Increasingly, Western culture embraces confusion as a virtue and decries certainty as a sin. Those who are confused about sexuality and identity are viewed as heroes. Those who are confused about morality are progressive pioneers. Those who are confused about spirituality are praised as tolerant. Conversely, those who express certainty about any of these issues are seen as bigoted, oppressive, arrogant, or intolerant. This cultural phenomenon led the compilers of the Oxford English Dictionary to name "post-truth" their word of the year in 2016. How can Christians offer truth and clarity to a world that shuns both? Frank interviews author and speaker Abdu Murray about his brand new book "Saving Truth" where he answers this question and more.

32 The Stupendous Reality of Being “in Christ Jesus”

But at the conscious level of our own action, it is through faith. Christ dwells in our hearts “through faith” (Ephesians 3:17). The life we live in union with his death and life we “live by faith in the Son of God” (Galatians 2:20). We are united in his death and resurrection “through faith” (Colossians 2:12).

35 Throw Like a Girl: Why Feminism Insults Real Women

But a rolling pin is different than a measuring cup, and we can acknowledge that without saying one is better than the other. And what a weird thing it would be if we did! Imagine showing someone your kitchen tools and having them indignantly accuse you of believing the measuring cup was better than the rolling pin. Better at what? If you want to measure some flour, you’ll have a hard time with a rolling pin, and you’ll have similar problems trying to roll out a pie crust with a measuring cup. A rolling pin has to be evaluated according to the standards of what makes a good rolling pin, and measuring cups have to be judged on their own terms. (As a sidenote, if you cringe at the domestic analogy, then it shows you’re doing exactly what I’m talking about.)

Leading isn’t so much about being on the platform or at the head of the group as it is about being noticeably different. You don’t lead when you land a certain position or facilitate discussion at small group. You lead when you live set apart from the world—and you can do that right where you are.

God Doesn’t Make Us Nice. He Makes Us New.

God doesn’t just make us nice; he makes us new—new creatures with new desires and the power of God’s indwelling Spirit to help us pursue them. By taking seriously the Bible’s assessment of our sinful state and the impossibility of self-improvement, we’re free to look to Christ as our only hope. As Lawrence puts it, “Christian conversion is a rescue. It’s a rescue from death to life, from wrath to forgiveness, from enslavement to freedom. And it’s God’s rescue. Only he can do it” (45).

48 Not a Hillsong to Die On: 100 Billion X and One Big Why

The third and final verse is even more powerful than the first. Just as creation reveals God, so also the cross reveals his heart of love. We “see [his] heart / Eight billion different ways.” We could quibble over whether “child” is a helpful term for all eight billion humans: “Every precious one / A child you died to save.” But the lyrics here do circle back to creation by mentioning eight billion humans made in God’s image. I’m eager to affirm Jesus died for all (1 John 2:2; John 4:14; Revelation 22:17), just not all in the same way (for his sheep, John 10:14–15; his friends, John 15:13; his bride, Ephesians 5:25).
