2 The Poached Egg Apologetics Daily

A Christian Apologetics Manifesto (19 Ways to ignite Apologetic Passion)

Since all Christians are called and commanded to have a reason for the hope within them (1 Peter 3:15), Christian teachers, pastors, mentors and educators of all kinds are remiss if they avoid, denigrate, or minimize the importance of apologetics to biblical living and Christian witness. The commonly heard canard, “No one comes to Christ through arguments” is patently false. Many people, such as the apologists C.S. Lewis and John Warwick Montgomery, were drawn to the gospel through apologetic arguments. By God’s grace, I have been able to help unbelievers see the truth and rationality of Christianity through apologetic arguments. Well-respected Christian philosophers and apologists, William Lane Craig and J.P. Moreland concur. Not all Christian teachers are equally gifted in apologetics, and some will emphasize this discipline more than others; but none should minimize the necessity of apologetics or preach around it when the biblical text requires otherwise.

What is the most important issue in the world? Think about it. Take a guess. What do we all need in order to make decisions and live our lives in this world and the next? Truth. Apologist Frank Turek says, “If you live by truth, then your eternity is secure. But if you don’t, then disaster awaits you if not in this life, then in the next.”

Episode 074: Authentic Community in the Age of Social Media - Christian Research Institute

“Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat — as the ubiquity of social media expands, we are drawn, whether unwittingly or not, into their orbit; a relentless cycle demanding as much of our time, energy, and attention we choose to offer. For human beings who are created in the image of our triune creator and share His characteristic impulse toward relationship, social media provides an avenue for both knowing and being known — for community. Whether it’s finding a niche Facebook group for a particular hobby or life experience, connecting with people otherwise unknown via Twitter, or watching distant friends raise their family on Instagram, each creates opportunities to create long-lasting community. Yet a growing number of people, both Christian and non-Christian alike, are increasingly wary about social media’s promise of providing a meaningful community. We need the church, and the particular relationships created within, to offer true north in the midst of an increasingly transient and digital world. The community of the church provides a number of essential resources for us as we go out into the world.

When Muslims Dream of Jesus

In 2007, Dudley Woodberry and others published a study that recounted interviews with 750 former Muslims who had converted to evangelical Christianity. Many of the reasons they gave for their conversion would be expected—the love of God, a changing view of the Bible, and an attraction to Christians who loved others. But one reason might come as a surprise: the experience of a dream they believed to be from God. These study results aren’t isolated. Mission Frontiers magazine has reported that out of 600 Muslim converts, 25 percent experienced a dream that led to their conversion. The great missionary Lillias Trotter also reported dreams that drove Muslims to Christ. But what should we say about the role of dreams and visions in hearing and believing the gospel? Religion and Dreams Some Christians are understandably hesitant to accept their legitimacy. Islam started with a vision. So did Mormonism, along with a long list of cults. Critics wonder how we could evaluate such dreams to know if they were true. Others believe that with the presence of Scripture, signs and wonders like dreams are no longer needed.

Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary Cuts All Ties With Paige Patterson, Terminates Emeritus Status

While the seminary did not reveal specific details about the new information shared with their board of trustees on Wednesday, officials said it was "inconsistent with SWBTS' biblically informed core values." The revelation also required swift action to cut all ties with Patterson who served as the 52nd president of the Southern Baptist Convention prior to becoming president of the seminary in June 2003.

8 Ten Reasons to Memorize Big Chunks of the Bible

Don’t say you can’t memorize because you have a bad memory. That’s why you need to memorize. I have a bad memory too. I think it’s worse than average — seriously. I forget names of people I know and see regularly! I have to force my faulty, inefficient brain to drive things that matter most into my long-term memory. This only happens by the process of repeating (memorizing) every day over a period of time. You’d be surprised what you can commit to memory if you have a simple system and put forth some effort. I’ve memorized five New Testament books and am working on my sixth. And that’s because I have a bad memory.

10 My Marriage Will End When Life Begins

Joe was a dear friend of ours who died twenty years ago. Twenty years. How can so much time have passed so quickly? I can see him vividly in my memory. I can hear his endearing sarcastic jabs and favorite jokes. I can hear his powerful, beautiful singing voice booming several blocks away as he walked to our house. I remember his infectious faith, his worshipful heart, his desire to see others freed by Jesus as he had been. I remember our long, meaningful talks. He bestowed on me the honor of best man when he married Nancy. He was only 37 when he died. Now he’s been gone for a generation.

A Case for the Bible 101: How does Archeology support the reliability of the New Testament?

Last week we looked at evidence for the reliability of the Old Testament through archeological discoveries. To date there have been over 25,000 finds that support the Biblical record, and no valid archeological find has ever disproven a Biblical account. Archeology is important in Biblical studies because it uncovers physical evidence from dig sites that help confirm ancient cities, fortresses, and artifacts like coinage, pottery and sculptures that directly or indirectly give support to both Old and New Testament accounts along with an understanding of the culture at the time.

How Ancient Eyewitness Testimony Became the New Testament Gospel Record

While Jesus walked here on earth, His followers studied and learned from His actions and words. They were often mesmerized, confused and challenged by what they saw and heard. In spite of this, Jesus taught them and occasionally sent them out on their own. They memorized His teaching and relied on his wisdom when they weren’t with Him. We don’t know how much (if anything) these eyewitnesses wrote down during this time. Did the disciples take notes? Did they keep a journal? While Jesus was alive, the disciples likely felt no need to write down his words. The Word was witnessed in these incredible days, as men and women stood in awe of the Master, watching Him perform miracles and listening carefully to what He taught about God and eternal life.

16 Do You Wish You Had Accomplished More?

John exemplified these words from the Lord’s Prayer: “Your kingdom come, your will be done” (Matthew 6:10). John was not focused on his own kingdom; he was focused on the kingdom of God. He didn’t try to expand his ministry or influence; he was content to go where God had called him. He didn’t feel slighted that his popularity was waning; he rejoiced that Christ’s fame was spreading. In every case, John subordinated his ego and his plans to God’s.

Ministry May Not Make You Happy

“Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh. . . . Woe to you who laugh now, for you shall mourn and weep” (Luke 6:21, 25). I’ve been a church-planting pastor for 15 years, first in the city of Manchester and now in the rural villages of North Norfolk in the UK. Over the course of my ministry, God has continually reminded me of my total dependence on him. But at times I’ve felt the darkness pushing joy out of my heart. Perhaps you can relate. You don’t need to be a church planter to experience these things, but in talking to brothers in Acts 29 Europe , I’ve learned that depression, anxiety, and sadness are common—not abnormal—themes among church planters. And these experiences sap strength from the task we’ve been given. It’s possible to hold out the bread of life to others while experiencing deep hunger in your own soul. I know what this feels like. Whatever your temperament, joy is foundational to the Christian life. And to church planting. But joy is not about a happy, easy life. In fact, true joy is forged in the furnace of trials. Joy matters in church planting.

What Mark's Abrupt Ending Tells Us About Gospel Historicity

The last few hundred years have revealed mountains of additional manuscript evidence for the New Testament, as archaeologists uncover more and more ancient scrolls and codices from the earliest centuries AD. This rich collection of manuscript evidence—far more than for any other ancient work—means that modern translators can draw on a clearer composite picture of what the original New Testament manuscripts said. Yet these new discoveries have changed almost nothing of substance between older versions of the Bible, like the KJV, and newer versions which are based on an older and broader collection of manuscripts.

Five Ways Christianity Is Reasonable

Some believers throughout church history have agreed with many nonbelievers in proclaiming that Christianity is not a reasonable religion. Nevertheless, a powerful theological-philosophical consensus within the history of the faith has argued that the historic Christian religion involves knowledge and is indeed compatible with reason. This historic agreement has often been expressed in the common statement: “faith seeking understanding.” Its most articulate and persuasive spokespersons through the centuries have been such distinguished Christian thinkers as Augustine, Anselm, and Thomas Aquinas. 1

I found this very helpful. It has been very slow going finding a church in a new city that we feel “at home” in. We were also wanting to find something close to home but need to expand our search for sound biblical teaching over convenience of distance.

Book Review: Apologetics at the Cross by Joshua D. Chatraw and Mark D. Allen

First, the message of Jesus – who he is, what he did, and why that matters – is central, but it is never to be divorced from the character of those sharing the message, whether in an individual or corporate setting. Second, composure matters when sharing the gospel, and a proper apologetic requires a knowledgeable yet humble spirit. In doing so, an emphasis must remain on the core matters such as the divinity of Christ, while allowing for grace in disagreement about matters not essential for salvation. Third, apologetics must appeal to the whole of the individual; it must not focus on the thinking part of a person at the expense of speaking to their beliefs and desires. Fourth, and finally, while truth is universal, the means by which the truth can be shown is contextual, and the apologist must understand and work within their given context.

Is Evolution a Theory in Crisis? This Biochemist Says Yes.

While Denton believes in common descent, and embraces a non-Darwinian law-based explanation for the diversity and complexity of life (although he concedes that his theory “may point to the intelligent design of the universe as uniquely fit for life” ), he launches a trenchant critique of the Darwinian model of adaptive gradualism. Essentially, he defies the claim that macroevolution is merely an extension of microevolution. There exist certain “homologs” or “primal patterns” in nature, claims Denton, which simply cannot be accounted for by cumulative selection. According to Denton, natural selection does play a minor role in the development of various organisms in nature, but there must be other operational forces. He explains:

33 Perfect Love Casts Out Fear

So this text is not teaching anything contrary to the thrust of the whole book — loving each other is the reassuring evidence that we are truly born of God and bound for eternal life: “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brethren” (1 John 3:14). Today’s text simply stresses the same thing that 1John 3:18–19 did, namely, that the love which can give us confidence before God is not mere talk but love that has been perfected into action — “not in mere word or speech, but in deed and in truth.”

Darwinists and the Fossil Record: Missing a Few Marbles

Neo-Darwinism leads us to expect more than just change over time in the fossil record. It anticipates a fossil pattern of very, very gradual evolution of new forms -- evolution by tiny steps. On Darwinian grounds we should expect to find this pattern even given our highly incomplete fossil record. Instead the pattern we find is sudden appearance and stasis, sudden appearance and stasis, and precious little transition. Charles Darwin himself admitted that this pattern, particularly in the Cambrian explosion, posed a serious challenge to his theory.

The Impotence of Darwinism: A Christian Scientist Looks at the Evidence

What Darwin proposed in 1859 was simply that all organisms are related by common descent. This process of descent or evolution was carried out by natural selection acting on variation found in populations. There was no guidance, no purpose, and no design in nature. The modern Neo-Darwinian variety of evolution identifies the source of variation as genetic mutation, changes in the DNA structure of organisms. Therefore, evolution is described as the common descent of all organisms by mutation and natural selection, and is assumed to be able to explain everything we see in the biological realm.

Gravitational Waves, Einstein and God

The recent detection of gravitational waves has received a lot of media coverage and rightly so for this is a remarkable finding from both an experimental and theoretical point of view. Gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space-time and were predicted by Albert Einstein 100 years ago. According to his general theory of relativity, accelerating massive object would radiate gravitational energy in the form of gravitational waves. However, since the effect is very weak, a very dramatic event is needed if there is to be any chance of detection. In this case it was the merging of two black holes, an event that took place over a billion years ago. Even so, by the time the waves reach Earth the distortion of space-time is less than the width of an atomic nucleus, which highlights just how astonishing a feat this is experimentally. While there had been indirect evidence for the existence of gravitational waves before, this was the first time they had been detected directly. As a bonus, it is also the first detection of two black holes merging and even the first direct detection of black holes themselves.

Books - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

Correct, Not Politically Correct: How Same Sex Marriage Hurts Everyone Why not legalize same-sex marriage? Who could it possibly hurt? Using sound reasoning and evidence—not religion—award-winning author Frank Turek shows that everyone will be hurt including children, the nation, and even homosexuals themselves. Turek provides concise answers to objections about equal rights, discrimination, and being born a certain way, and he exposes the real reason gay activists are trying to impose same-sex marriage on the country without a single vote from the people. Turek’s message is direct but respectful. It is correct, not politically correct. And it is a message that we must not ignore. For details, see .

How Did Lucifer Fall and Become Satan?

What is the rationale for the conclusion that these latter verses refer to the fall of Lucifer? Whereas the first ten verses in this chapter speak about the ruler of Tyre (who was condemned for claiming to be a god though he was just a man), the discussion moves to the king of Tyre starting in verse 11. Many scholars believe that though there was a human “ruler” of Tyre, the real “king” of Tyre was Satan, for it was he who was ultimately at work in this anti-God city and it was he who worked through the human ruler of the city.

Astrophysics and Molecular Genetics with the Parking Brake On | Evolution News

The ancient model of the cosmos, which was the model presupposed by most scientists prior to the mid 20th century, was Steady State: the universe was eternal and unchanging. Einstein’s relativity theory, extended by Georges Lemaître (a physicist and Catholic priest), suggested that space-time was unstable, and a model of an expanding universe, originating from a singularity (i.e. from nothing ), was a better fit to theory. The empirical evidence remained inconclusive for decades, although Hubble’s discovery of the red shift lent credence to the Big Bang model.

Netflix's Latest Shows For Teens Send Destructive Messages

Presumably Netflix is releasing teen-oriented content with the intention of relating to young people, who could learn valuable life lessons or be incited as a result into meaningful discussions about real-world problems and solutions. But “13 Reasons Why” and “The Kissing Booth” are not teaching good lessons or provoking the right kind of discussions, regardless of the intention of the show creators. Netflix would do well to be cognizant of the messages allowed to stream on its massive platform, and consider the potential harm some of them could be doing to vulnerable kids who use the service.

5 Signs You're Forcing Your Religion (or Atheism) on Your Kids...and 5 Signs You're Not

What happens if young people stop caring about truth?

I might, indeed, have learned, even from the poets, that Love is something more stern and splendid than mere kindness: that even the love between the sexes is, as in Dante, “a lord of terrible aspect”. There is kindness in Love: but Love and kindness are not coterminous, and when kindness (in the sense given above) is separated from the other elements of Love, it involves a certain fundamental indifference to its object, and even something like contempt of it. Kindness consents very readily to the removal of its object – we have all met people whose kindness to animals is constantly leading them to kill animals lest they should suffer. Kindness, merely as such, cares not whether its object becomes good or bad, provided only that it escapes suffering. As Scripture points out, it is bastards who are spoiled: the legitimate sons, who are to carry on the family tradition, are punished. It is for people whom we care nothing about that we demand happiness on any terms: with our friends, our lovers, our children, we are exacting and would rather see them suffer much than be happy in contemptible and estranging modes.

What are some ways you share the gospel locally using Apologetics? College Campuses Evangelism

Go with another believer; take that time to disciple and mentor another Christian to evangelize.  The good thing about evangelizing with another believer is that no two Christians are exactly alike; there will be things that are strengths they have that you don’t have and vice versa; be a “team-player” evangelist, or better yet a “team-builder” evangelist.  Be humble and realize you are learning too, just as they are learning.  Feedback is also a two way street and be willing to learn from the person you are teaching and hear what they have to say in terms of positive encouragement but also their constructive criticism.  In all things be biblical.  Also follow up with the brother or sister with further discipleship by reading through a book on evangelism, the Gospel and apologetics together.  I encourage by the way that you pick someone of your own gender if its just one other person evangelizing with you so that things don’t look inappropriate but when there are several individuals in your evangelism team I do think it is alright to have brothers and sisters sharing the Gospel together and being trained as a group.

A Bombshell for Replacing Darwin?

Will this incipient species go extinct as rapidly as it formed? Perhaps. But another new species might arise in its place. In fact, this cycle of speciation and extinction might happen repeatedly over the next several decades. If so, this might add to the evidence in support of my published predictions. For example, the current rate of speciation—12 new species per year—is 5 times higher than my predicted rate of 2.4 new species per year. If 5 speciation-extinction cycles occur in Darwin’s finches before a permanent species is formed, the adjusted rate of speciation (i.e., the long-term rate of speciation) will fall exactly in line with what I predicted. (What I predicted is, technically, a long-term rate anyway.) And it will magnify the discrepancy between predicted long-term evolutionary rates and reality.

Why Are There No Extra-Biblical Writings That Confirm Christianity

Why are there no historical testimonies of miracles outside the Bible consistent with the New Testament? How come there are no extra-biblical writings that confirm the New Testament? Why didn’t more non-Christian historians of antiquity mention Jesus? Those who did, why didn’t they paint Jesus in the same manner consistent with the Christians who wrote the New Testament (NT) documents? One may be inclined to ask these questions with good intentions, but the origin of the issue assumes a gaping oversight on the part of the questioner, and the answers are actually implicit in the questions themselves. All we need to do is consider history in light of the way in which personal persuasions work themselves out. Whether we’re dealing with supernatural events witnessed by extra-biblical writers or with their own testimony of historical narratives surrounding Jesus of Nazareth, there is a problem with the expectation of any writing existing outside the Bible, conferring full agreement with the Bible.
