Two More Ways Learning to Defend Your Faith Benefits You

A third reason to engage our minds and be prepared to defend the faith is a very practical one: it makes us stronger in times of trials. The questions one must deal with in defending the faith are truly the biggest questions of life, questions like the existence of God, why am I placed on this earth, and how I should treat my fellow man. These are tough issues that require a clear mind and considerable attention. No one wants to wrestle with such ideas during a time of emotional upheaval. They require each of us to ask ourselves penetrating questions like, "Do I really have the good evidence that God exists, or am I just kind of feeding off of a lot of the information that I've been told? Am I just believing that because it feels good or because it helps me?" Once you've explored the arguments for these issues and reached a satisfactory conclusion, you can rest assured of the fact of God's existence or the resurrection.

How Does God’s Sovereignty Not Violate Our Decision-Making?

“Pastor John, thank you for all your episodes over the years. This podcast nourishes my soul. But I am also thickheaded, and a lot of important theological points come to me very slowly. Can you explain again how God’s sovereignty over human decisions and actions comes through his control over our affections, such that we are not robots responding moment by moment to individual commands and prompts in situations, but he is in control of our decisions as we freely choose what we want? I think I’m on the verge of understanding you and Edwards and the Reformed tradition on this, but can you make this all clear in ten minutes (so Tony doesn’t scold you for going long again!)?”

The Incel Movement and the Repugnant Logic of the Sexual Revolution

The Story: A terrorist attack in Canada has exposed the violent misogyny of the incel movement—and the repugnant logic of the sexual revolution. The Background: Last month, a 25-year-old man named Alek Minassian was charged with 10 counts of murder and 13 counts of attempted murder for intentionally driving a rental van into pedestrians in Toronto, Canada. Most of the victims were women, ranging in age from their 20s to their 80s. Prior to the attack, Minassian wrote in a Facebook post, “The Incel Rebellion has already begun! We will overthrow all the Chads and Stacys!” “Incel” is short for “ involuntary celibate ,” a label used by some men who blame women for their inability to engage in sexual activity. “Stacys” are the women who reject incels for “Chads,” the men who are sexually attractive to women. The “Incel rebellion” is the ideological movement to overthrow what self-described incels consider the oppressive feminism of society. The group is mainly found online in such popular websites as Reddit and 4Chan. (One incel community on Reddit has about 40,000 subscribers.

Reading through the [Alleged] Best 100 Science Fiction books- #51-55

Grade: D “Utterly bloated and in dire need of editing,  Battlefield Earth is like a pulp science fiction novel gone wrong. The whole concept of pulpy sci-fi demands episodic structure with plenty of action. Though there is a lot of action here, it is annoyingly repetitive, and if I have to read about the need for ‘leverage’ one more time I’m going to go insane. But I must write about leverage: having an alien who is so concerned with self-interest was intriguing, but like basically every other idea in this novel, it was never developed beyond the surface level, at best. It’s like Hubbard thought ‘Hey, self-interested alien… that’d be a cool way to drive the plot.’ But then, instead of developing further, he just decided to write about ‘leverage’ every single time that alien showed up. Where’s my leverage. I must have leverage. Leverage! We get it, Hubbard. We get it. The book also spends about 150 pages at the beginning with an alien trying to figure out what to feed a human. Not a joke. Well, let’s just say I am not impressed by this one.

Can We Preach to All People?

As I’ve said before, this canon was deliberately written this way. “Moreover” ( caeterum ) is not as strong as “therefore” ( ergo ). The canon is not explaining the precise relationship between Jesus’ sufficiency and preaching so that it may allow for the different ways of expression among Reformed theologians. 2 But what it does clearly say is that if your view of “limited atonement” limits your evangelistic outlook, you don’t understand the historic Reformed view. Far from limiting evangelizing and witnessing, this doctrine frees us to sow the seed of the gospel freely (Matt. 13). Why? Because we know that there are those whom the Father elected, for whom Christ died, and whom the Holy Spirit will powerfully and effectually bring to faith. Listen to the echo of Jesus’ command to His Apostles in Matthew 28:19 and Mark 16:15 here in canon 2.5: “This promise . . . ought to be declared and published to all nations.” And the language of preaching “without differentiation or discrimination to all nations and people” is drawn from texts such as 2 Corinthians 5, where Paul said he sought to “persuade others” (v.

The Problem with “Bad Design” Arguments | Evolution News

One of Butler’s arguments focused on the supposedly poor design of the eye, which is hardly an original argument. As I read his posts, it was apparent his knowledge only extended to maybe reading of a book or two by Richard Dawkins and I suspect some blog posts. His basic argument, as I expected, was that even though the eye is “remarkably good,” it is backwards and also “absolutely stupid” because light has to travel through blood vessels before reaching the light-sensing receptors. Thus, according to Butler, you end up with a blind spot. This is not a problem, he notes, for the camera eye of a cephalopod whose light-sensing cells point toward the incoming light, providing what he felt was a more “rational design.” Therefore, he posits, there cannot have been a designer of the human eye, since this is exactly what we would expect from natural selection.

Book Review: The Creator and the Cosmos

Several years ago, when I was struggling with science/faith issues, I stumbled upon astrophysicist Dr. Hugh Ross' book " The Creator and the Cosmos ." He had released the third edition of the book, and many people were recommending it for those with science/faith concerns. I was already somewhat familiar with Dr. Ross' name since I had read "The Fingerprint of God" in the mid-90s but had not pursued much more investigation (most of the content was way over my head at the time). I decided to pick up a copy of that new book in the mid-2000s and took the time to read through it carefully. I was astounded at the strength of the scientific case Dr. Ross presented for the existence of the God of the Bible.

Stop Bowing to the God of Busyness

I don’t do rest. I do . I’m one of those obnoxious types who thrives on little sleep, has more-than-average amounts of energy, and derives probably too much pleasure from the sound of my pen striking through an item on my to-do list. Big cities like the one I live in are filled with people like me—all diligently competing to get the most done, feel the most important, and accomplish all our life goals. But when people like me meet the God of rest, we have a problem. Smug senses of superiority for accomplishing many tasks don’t fit neatly into God’s kingdom. Measuring oneself by achievements doesn’t match up with a gospel that saves by grace, not by more work. I believe the gospel, and I’ve received grace upon grace. So why do I—and so many other Western Christians—keep falling into the trap of doing more? Two Gods   In the church it can be just as bad. Join a small group. Oh, and a service team. And bring a cake to the youth bake sale. And could you just swing by for the volunteer day? Before you know it, we are working pretty hard for a God who saves by grace. Even if you observe a sabbath, you might work pretty hard to do it! Again I ask, why? To fall into the trap of perpetual busyness is to confuse the God of the Bible with the god of this world.

5 Reasons the Resurrection of Jesus is NOT a Copy of Ancient Pagan Myths

We are coming up on a time of year when the resurrection of a virgin-born child whose followers called the "Good Shepherd" and "Messiah" is celebrated. He had twelve disciples, performed miracles, and sacrificed himself for the peace of the world. He was buried in a tomb only to rise from the dead three days later. His followers went on to celebrate his resurrection every year, and this celebration eventually became what we call "Easter."

It is to the point with no rabbit holes to get lost in. I suggest all read and be able to understand .

Why We Educate Our Girls

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind” (Matthew 22:37) was not a command given only to men. Women will be held back from knowing and loving God as fully as they can, if they are held back from forming the habits and skills of reading — not just the skills of a third grade reader, but the skills of discerning the full riches of biblical revelation concerning the great work of the Son of God in his life, death, and resurrection. This is the great work of education.

A Bruised Reed He Will Not Break

This combination is why he is such a good Savior to turn to. He is strong and mighty to save: he can take on the strongest of our foes and always be certain to prevail. No spiritual force arrayed against us stands a chance of surviving. And yet he is unspeakably delicate and careful with us. There is no wound or vulnerability he doesn’t understand or handle with the utmost care. He is someone we can trust with our most tender bruises and fragility. He will not be clumsy with us. He won’t steamroll us. He can apply his unimaginable strength to us with affection and sensitivity.

44
True Love Must Be Reciprocated

Can individuals seek God on their own? Absolutely not! God’s grace must be extended to them first. This truth is seen in Jesus’s description of the Holy Spirit’s ministry. Jesus notes that the Holy Spirit will “convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: About sin, because they do not believe in me; about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see me; about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged” (Jn. 16:8-9). In this case, we see that God is the lover, human beings are the beloved, and the Spirit working to produce this love is the Holy Spirit. Forced love is not love, though. God does not force a person to salvation. He freely gives his love and his love must freely be received, otherwise, it is not true love.

Christians Answer Questions Atheists Say Christians Can’t Answer

It also depends on your understanding of faith and belief.  The Hebrew language has no “to be” verb forms in it. In other words, to the Ancient Jews, faith/belief was an action-oriented direction – a choice.  Emunah – the Hebrew word usually used for OT faith, means faithfulness, trust, etc. You can actually, even if you aren’t sure you believe it in your head, act as if it’s true and live in such a way that glorifies God.  That is biblical faith, to bring about redemption of the world through telling others about what God does, did and is doing, helping the victimized, the poor, the widow, those in need, ease suffering in the world, and helping people change their lives by inviting them into relationship with Yeshua (Jesus). Often we think of faith as in our heads, but this is not the way biblical faith was until the Greeks got a hold of it.  A wise Messianic Rabbi told me, “Do not put Descartes before the horse.” In other words, while Descartes may have said, “I think therefore I am.” The OT Jews and first Christians would say, “I live therefore I act.
