“To be ignorant and simple now - not to be able to meet the enemies on their own ground - would be to throw down our weapons, and to betray our uneducated brethren who have, under God, no defense but us against the intellectual attacks of the heathen. Here’s Rick Warren Speaking at the Senate Hearing on Global Health Problems

Saddleback Church pastor and author Rick Warren issued the opening statement at the Senate’s hearing on Global Health Problems this week. Warren not only provided biblical support for continuing to provide assistance for people in need around the world, he also explained why he believed it could lead to greater peace in the future: It’s far more cost effective, far cheaper, for Americans to send medicine to make friends now, than to send troops to fight enemies later. Medicines cost less than tanks. Warren also encouraged continued partnerships between the faith community and the public and private sectors to fight poverty and provide international medical assistance: “The Church invented the hospital. And if we’re going to absolutely eradicate these diseases, we’ve got to do a combination of the public sector, the private sector and the faith sector: The three legs of the stool” ...

Kindle Deals in Christianity and Apologetics: This Week's Top Ten Best-Sellers

With the immediacy of Internet searches and ease of handheld devices, the archaic custom of memorizing Scripture may not seem necessary, but bestselling author Robert J. Morgan makes an airtight case for reviving this practice in 100 Bible Verses Everyone Should Know by Heart. “It’s vital for mental and emotional health and for spiritual wellbeing,” he writes. “It’s as powerful as acorns dropping into furrows in the forest. It allows God’s words to sink into your brain and permeate your subconscious and even your unconscious thoughts. It saturates the personality, satiates the soul, and stockpiles the mind. It changes the atmosphere of every family and alters the weather forecast of every day.” In a series of brief opening chapters, Morgan prepares the reader for this new way of thinking and then presents his list of 100 crucial verses, including sidebar notes, quotes, and memorization tips for each. Knowing his list will differ from what others would choose, extra pages are included to add one’s own favorite verses, thus extending the exercise and memorization habit.   O

My response to those calling me ‘cowardly’

But just as I speak the truth about homosexual “marriage,” knowing that in doing so I will offend LGBT readers and listeners, I don’t call them “faggots” or the like, and I do my best to speak the truth in love. Put another way, I know that the truth can offend and will not back down from it, but I do my best not to be offensive.

Complaint says crosses at Catholic school offensive, prevent Muslim prayers

It disturbs me greatly about the passiveness of the American people and their lack of awareness. They are so busy with their electronic things that they either aren’t aware or don’t care about what is happening to this coountry. They elected a president that can’t and won’t produce his birth certificate and who allows illegals to run amok in this country and giving them everything free until Americans are losing their jobs and homes, and now when he should be questioning this renegade lawyer about his trouble making between the Catholic college and Muslim students he’s puting his nose in to a shooting because it’s white against black. None of his business.I’ve been writing my Congressmen since 1993 about the folly of allowing this country to be overrun with illegals. No one paid attention. Then in 2001 the unspeakable happened to the twin towers and oh yes, the American people thought it was terrible, but if you didn’t have anyone in it it was soon forgotten and they thought it ok for the Muslims to build a mosque next to the site. That was unforgiveable! I have written Congress about how quietly the Muslims are puching their evil religion on and nobody seem to care.

In Fresno, police focus on building relationships, not making arrests

Not long ago, the Hispanic residents of this gang-ridden neighborhood in Southwest Fresno would not have voluntarily spoken to a police officer, much less attended a police-sponsored block party and taken photos with the chief. But over the past decade, a sustained policing initiative marked by community meetings, Christmas gifts and dozens of neighborhood events has fundamentally altered police-resident relations.

Banned - An Interview with John Dickson - The Gospel Coalition Australia | TGC Australia

JD: Special Religious Education (SRE) is an optional class once a week, where parents can send their kids to learn about Christianity or Judaism or whatever. It’s been going on in schools for decades. My book A Sneaking Suspicion has been used for years with teenagers in this context. Yesterday, I was told by one of the major SRE providers, Anglican Youth Works, that my little book has been immediately suspended by the New South Wales Department of Education, despite it being approved by the Archbishop of Sydney for use in SRE. Weirdly, no reason is given, other than that content of the book “does not comply with departmental policy.” So we are guessing a little bit as to why. Do they not like the bit where I say that Jesus died for our sins? Or is it the claim that Jesus rose again? Or, perhaps more plausibly, is it that I offer a gentle case for enjoying sex only in the context of a life long marriage commitment?

“Two factual beliefs of Adventists are their health message (thank you, Dr. Kellogg, for concocting dry breakfast cereal, and thank you, other Adventists, for grilling the first vege-burgers to help people become vegetarians) and their keeping the Sabbath on Saturday, sundown Friday to sundown Saturday,” Campbell wrote in a recent story on Carson’s beliefs. “They definitely do find support for both of those things in the Bible.”

What to Do When You Don’t Feel Like You’re Making a Difference

I was a pastor, which means that I should have had one of the most outward-facing, world-changing jobs of all time. In reality, I spent 50 percent of my time with the staff of the church. The staff was generally all Christian, easy-to-love individuals of above-average means and education. Outside of the staff, I spent about 40 percent of my time with the congregation, that is, the people who I knew who were volunteering or serving in some capacity that I was, as their pastor, equipping to do the work of the church. These folks were known entities and not necessarily in great measures of life-changing need, outside of the occasional pastoral care meeting.

Indonesia Executes Drug Smuggler Whose Faith Inspired Hillsong’s Brian Houston

Just before my court date (where he would receive the death penalty), I remember reading Mark 11:23-24, where it says that if you have enough faith you can say to this mountain, ‘Be removed’ and God will do it. So I said, ‘God if you’re real and if this is true, I want you to free me, and if you do I’ll serve you every day for the rest of my life.’ I went to my court hearing and they convicted me and gave me the death penalty. When I got back to my cell, I said, ‘God, I asked you to set me free, not kill me.’ God spoke to me and said, ‘Andrew, I have set you free from the inside out; I have given you life!’ From that moment on I haven’t stopped worshipping Him. I had never sung before, never led worship, until Jesus set me free.

Mourning with Those Who Mourn on Mother's Day

The truth is sometimes it is just plain hard. Good news does not always come at convenient times. In fact, sometimes the news of a friend's pregnancy comes right after you have spent the morning weeping over your own inability to conceive. Sometimes the mother/daughter tea at church comes right after a low day of missing your own mom. This life is messy and sorrowful, something Paul understood when he wrote these words. Sometimes rejoicing with someone else means expressing genuine joy over their good blessing, while you wait bereaved and barren. This never negates the reality of our suffering, but it does help us to give honor where honor is due, especially on a day like Mother's Day. Motherhood is a high and glorious calling. In a culture where motherhood is increasingly under attack, we should be the first to embrace and honor the gift of motherhood, even if it is a gift we have yet to receive.

Being a Christian Is Not About Being Right

There may also be people who follow God's will without knowing it, who have either never heard of Jesus or turned away from him because of the sins of the church. With God, all things are possible, including, if it's His will, saving those people. If that happens, it's His business, not ours, and we won't know it until we get there. It's also possible that people who adopt a Christian label but never connected in their heart will not be saved. Again, we won't know that until we get there.

Hymns We Should Sing More Often: God Moves

Cowper wrote “God Moves in a Mysterious Way” in 1773 before he fell into a deep depression. In the mysterious providence of God this hymn has brought comfort and hope to countless believers who, like Cowper, struggle through the long dark night of the soul. In this way Cowper fulfills what Paul said in 2 Corinthians 4:12, “So death is at work in us, but life in you.” The hymn lyrics remind us that God’s ways are not our ways and that things are often not the way they seem. He often works most powerfully in apparent weakness, those who may feel abandoned by God may in fact be beloved children, and there are wise and loving purposes in the suffering he ordains for his people. As Cowper writes,

Don’t Let Pride Steal Your Joy

Navigating Sam Harris’ The Moral Landscape | Reasonable Faith

This implies that we can conceive of a possible world in which the continuum of human well-being is not a moral landscape. The peaks of well-being could be occupied by evil people. But this entails that in the actual world the continuum of well-being and the moral landscape are not identical either. For identity is a necessary relation. There is no possible world in which some entity A is not identical to A. So if there is any possible world in which A is not identical to B, it follows that A is not in fact identical to B. Since it's possible that human well-being and moral goodness are not identical, it follows necessarily that human well-being and moral goodness are not the same, as Harris has asserted. By granting that it's possible that the continuum of well-being is not identical to the moral landscape, Harris has rendered his view logically incoherent.

In the centuries following the Enlightenment, the flood of challenges to Christianity has been ongoing, and in the last century they have increased at a rapid rate. Scientific advances have become challenges. As the world has grown smaller, encounters with other religions have also raised challenges. In this message, Dr. Michael Horton looks at the way many Christians have responded in fear rather than taking up the challenge and offering a reasoned defense of the faith.

Jeb Bush Pushes Faith to the Forefront

But now, as Bush prepares to enter the race for the Republican presidential nomination, he’s making faith central to his pitch to the party’s primary voters, defending Christianity as a powerful force for human progress and weaving religion into the inequality themes of his burgeoning campaign. It’s a crucial marker for Bush, who has acknowledged the need to stand apart from his father and brother, both ex-presidents. And whether or not the party’s religious conservatives find Bush’s faith-based message as compelling as McCarron will help determine his success.

WORLD | Holiday sorrow | Arsenio Orteza | May 16, 2015

Holiday’s self-destructiveness can be explained to a large extent by the abandonment, the rapes, the prostitution, and the incarceration that afflicted her youth (and maybe by the racism and the sexism that afflicted her adulthood). But her circumstances don’t explain her practically embracing victimization during the years that she was becoming, and knew that she was becoming, the greatest jazz singer ever. By all accounts, she was aware of the preciousness of the gift that she was destroying.

Should Christians expect to know God's will by means of feelings and intuitions?

I think that every person is the commanding officer of his or her own life, and each person must study everything they can, make a plan that is consistent with the Bible’s moral prescriptions, execute the plan and achieve whatever they can achieve for the Lord. And the goal is not comfort or happy feelings, but real achievements. Not for the purpose of being saved, of course, because salvation is a free gift of God because of what Jesus did on the cross. Life is more like a battle than a vacation resort or a buffet or a shopping center. God’s will for us is not have happy feelings, but that we freely choose to sacrifice ourselves out of obedience and service to him. In my case, that means studying hard things, making money, saving money, and giving money away to good scholars, sponsoring good events and being persuasive to non-Christians. None of this necessarily makes me happy, but it does work to bring glory to God. I cried when I had to learn calculus, because it was so hard. But who cares? The main thing is that I have money now to sponsor Christian speakers or to give books to Christians to read, and God is happy with that.

Fetal science confronts abortion fanaticism | WashingtonExaminer.com

Medicine will improve as time passes, and in turn survival rates will improve as the viability of ever-younger babies is established. This has consequences not only for doctors, but also for lawmakers. In 1973, the Supreme Court ruled that there exists a constitutional right to abort a fetus until it has become viable, which the court back in those days interpreted as occurring as late as 28 weeks. Today, in deference to the science behind early viability and the ability of babies to feel pain in the womb, many states have begun restricting abortion to 20 weeks. Congress is set to consider such a measure this week.

Mother's Day Worship?

"In our culture, these really are significant days when we honor dads and moms. Mother's Day is almost like the elephant in the room—and important to acknowledge, to break down this secular-sacred divide that is sometimes so much a part of religious life in America. Because that is on people's minds, and the rest of the day will certainly be spent honoring mothers and thanking God for mothers—whether still alive or no longer with us—that's certainly something to lift up in the worship service."

What UK Prime Minister David Cameron will do, and an extra thing that he should do

Oliver Letwin, the Tories’ policy chief, has spent the campaign in Whitehall drawing up proposals to merge quangos and slash Government regulation. These are likely to form a key part of the spending review. The review has been made more difficult by Mr Cameron’s late and unexpected election pledge to find an extra £8bn for the NHS. This has yet to be funded and if the Tories stick to their other tax and spending commitments could require further cuts. Most senior Tories had expected to be negotiating another coalition agreement with the Liberal Democrats, giving them the flexibility to raise taxes to fund their additional spending commitments. As it is they are now bound to implement legislation binding the Government not to increase income tax, national insurance or VAT rates for the next five years.

50 Triablogue: The Wood/Loftus Debate On The Resurrection

David Wood and John Loftus debated the resurrection on April 20. A video of the debate is now available . Wood won the debate by a wide margin, and I won't attempt to summarize the many good points he made. You can watch the debate yourself to get Wood's side of it. Here are several problems I noticed with Loftus' portion of the debate, among a lot of other problems that could be mentioned (the references in parentheses are to minutes within the YouTube video linked above): - Loftus appeals to radical skepticism on issues like the textual transmission of the New Testament documents, sometimes even suggesting that all we can do is speculate about the text beyond some small fragments (30; 37). He brings up the possibility that Paul was lying about what he reported on issues like the resurrection (1:55), without interacting with the evidence to the contrary, including what Wood had cited earlier in the debate. Loftus sometimes proposes radical skepticism on issues like the text of the New Testament and Paul's honesty. I've only given a couple of examples here, but Loftus resorted to that level of skepticism frequently.
