Acts 17: Debate: Did Jesus Rise from the Dead? (David Wood vs. John Loftus)

Jesus' resurrection is the heart of both Christian preaching and Christian living. In 1 Corinthians 15:17, the Apostle Paul said: "If Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless." Hence, Christianity stands or falls with the resurrection of Jesus. In order to discredit Christianity, atheists simply need to discredit the central miracle on which it is founded. But can atheistic explanations account for the historical facts? If they can't, is atheism a worldview in crisis? In this video, David Wood (Christian, former atheist) and John Loftus (atheist, former Christian) debate whether Jesus rose from the dead.

Evangelical Hispanics and the 2016 Vote

In 1976, journalists writing about presidential candidate Jimmy Carter’s religious faith often felt obliged to define the meaning of the phrase “born again.” The fact that the concept was quite familiar to millions of Americans didn’t matter; it seemed exotic to some in government and media. In 2016, evangelical Christians may have to explain “born again” makes perfectly good sense, whether in English or in Spanish.

The Integrity of Words and Our Confession of Faith

Sadly, the landscape is littered with theological institutions that have poorly taught and have been poorly led. Theological liberalism has destroyed scores of seminaries, divinity schools, and other institutions for the education of the ministry. Many of these schools are now extinct, even as the churches they served have been evacuated. Others linger on, committed to the mission of revising the Christian faith in order to make peace with the spirit of the age. These schools intentionally and boldly deny the pattern of sound words in order to devise new words for a new age — producing a new faith. As J. Gresham Machen rightly observed almost a century ago, we do not really face two rival versions of Christianity. We face Christianity on the one hand and, on the other hand, some other religion that selectively uses Christian words, but is not Christianity.

The Problem with Good Advice

The problem comes when our advice sounds no different from the advice a counselor from another religion or even no religion at all would give. If an atheist would suggest the same child-rearing techniques or a Buddhist the same stress-management strategies as we do, then there is something missing from our counsel. Even though truth is truth no matter who says it, the advice that followers of Christ give ought to point to the source of all truth.

God's Not Dead: No Need for Evolution: God’s Fingerprints are Everywhere

Sir Fred Hoyle dispels unguided evolution by setting forth the following: “The laws of nuclear physics have been deliberately designed with regard to the consequences they produce inside stars. If this is so, apparently random quirks have become part of a deep-laid scheme.” He called creation a “put up job.” The Lord’s fingerprints are imprinted on every part of the universe, from the tiniest atom to the largest galaxy. I enjoy examining the proof of God’s design and engineering. But in actuality, everything is evidence of God having created time, space, and matter. There is nothing in the world that is not evidence for a Creator. The believer is not merely to defend the faith with probabilities. It is impossible for God not to be the Creator. We have a perfect certainty that God hurled and fashioned this universe together for His glory. We must stand on God’s word and say to the world: God lives, and He is not silent.

Courage that Counts

Let’s get even more personal. What sins are publicly confessed in your church? Consult a list such as Galatians 5:19–21. Maybe your church talks often about sins such as sensuality. Do you also seek forgiveness for strife? Envy? Rivalry? We cannot simply dismiss the world’s dismal view of the church as evidence that we’re living faithfully for Jesus. Outsiders see our churches as more than content to baptize a conservative utopia where government punishes other people’s sins and doesn’t touch our freedom, consumerism, and inequality. They think we’re in it for ourselves. They don’t see Christianity as caring for the world. They don’t see how faith in Jesus makes any difference for everyday problems such as lack of access to quality education and job opportunities. We talk about religious freedom, and they hear us pleading for special privileges. We talk about conversion, and they hear us recruiting new Republican voters. We talk about courage, and they hear us pining for the black-and-white 1950s.

16 A Formulation and Defense of the Doctrine of the Trinity | Reasonable Faith

Conventional wisdom has it that in affirming that God is three persons, Church Fathers like Tertullian meant at most three individuals, not three persons in the modern, psychological sense of three centers of self-consciousness. I shall return to this issue when we look at the creedal formulation of Trinitarian doctrine, but for now I may note that an examination of Tertullian’s statements suggests that such a claim is greatly exaggerated. In a remarkable passage aimed at illustrating the doctrine of the Son as the immanent Logos in the Father’s mind, Tertullian invites his reader, who, he says, is created in the image and likeness of God, to consider the role of reason in the reader’s own self-reflective thinking. “Observe, then, that when you are silently conversing with yourself, this very process is carried on within you by your reason, which meets you with a word at every movement of your thought, at every impulse of your conception” (5). Tertullian envisions one’s own reason as a sort of dialogue partner when one is engaged in self-reflective thought.

And All God's People Said, "Wut?" | Blog & Mablog

I wonder whether we are right even to treat the young-earth position as a kind of allowable if regrettable alternative, something we know our cousins down the road get up to but which shouldn’t stop us getting together at Thanksgiving. Yes, of course any confrontation must be done in courtesy and civility, charity and gentleness—though if the truth is at stake, look at how Paul confronted Peter in Antioch. . . . And if, as I suspect, many of us don’t think of young-earthism as an allowable alternative, is this simply for the pragmatic reason that it makes it hard for us to be Christians because the wider world looks at those folks and thinks we must be like that too? Or is it—as I suggest it ought to be—because we have glimpsed a positive point that urgently needs to be made and that the young-earth literalism is simply screening out? That’s the danger of false teaching: it isn’t just that you’re making a mess; you are using that mess to cover up something that ought to be brought ureentlv to light.

Killing Jesus Christ: New Book: The Unjust Arrest and Illegal Trials of Jesus Christ

After Christ’s arrest there were endless interrogations, Jewish trials, and Roman trials. The documentation for Christ’s trial begins with the New Testament. No thoughtful person has legitimately questioned the actuality of the trial of Jesus, or that sentences of guilt were declared by Israel and Rome. Moreover, His enemies haughtily admit that the Romans executed Christ. The accepted Gospels as well as the Talmud often refer to the trial and the crucifixion. The ambiguities are of minutiae, not material, apropos the facts of the trials. In details, the synoptic Gospels agree extraordinarily well with one another and form a consistent portrayal regarding the trial of Christ. In the vehemence of its conviction, modern Orthodox Judaism agrees with the rabbinical application of justice that was applied to Christ by the hands of the Romans. Orthodox Judaism’s revulsion of Jesus Christ is so severe that by Mishnahic strictures, some contemporary Jewish fundamentalists would send Christ to Pilate a second time, should they be given the opportunity.

The Real Point of Prayer

I really can't stand antagonists in the comment section. With that being said, I would add one category to round out this excellent article. Prayer changes reality. If we only focus on how our hearts are changed by God we really lose sight of how biblical characters interacted with God and how Jesus taught us to pray. He insists that his father is better than a cruel judge or a weird dad, and that he wants to change reality if only we ask. This does not mean that God's hands are tied behind his back until we pray, but that he certainly likes us to ask him and for more benefit than our own sanctification. It's really easy to let a warped theology convince us that prayer doesn't actually change anything besides our own hearts. That eventually turns into self service sanctification where I have to pray so I can be made holy. We often believe that "God responds to my prayer of salvation, but any prayer past that point is simply for my own good". We certainly don't change God by our prayers, but he absolutely responds to them. There is a tension in the Bible, but we must maintain the tension and pray with hope that God can change our reality through prayers.

If you are the leader type (or you want to be a leader in the future), the role of “lead follower” is the best practice you can have until you get your shot. Being a Christian Is Not About Being Right

There may also be people who follow God's will without knowing it, who have either never heard of Jesus or turned away from him because of the sins of the church. With God, all things are possible, including, if it's His will, saving those people. If that happens, it's His business, not ours, and we won't know it until we get there. It's also possible that people who adopt a Christian label but never connected in their heart will not be saved. Again, we won't know that until we get there.

How the Church Can Support Mothers in Poverty

Walking with also brings mothers together. Each month, moms in the Child Survival Program gather at the local church, where the woman-to-woman relationship is magnified in a women-to-women community. For many women, this is their first hint that they can directly influence their own family’s future. What should be obvious actually flies in the face of messages they receive in their neighborhoods.

The Real Consequences of Atheism

Kevin Harris: Welcome to Reasonable Faith with Dr. William Lane Craig. Dr. Craig, from time to time in our daily lives somebody stands up and shouts, “Wait! Stop the presses! This is what it is all about.” What we have is a comment that I think is very telling from an atheist who says, “Wait a minute. Do you know exactly what it is that we are talking about? That is, the real consequences of adopting an atheistic worldview.” I guess, Bill, from time to time this might be kind of jarring because a lot of what I hear coming from the New Atheist and the atheist community is trying to be positive and have their own charities and be more organized and even have their own songs, and all this positive and giving and being in community in the midst of life just like everybody else.

Why “Closure” Requires A Christian Worldview - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

But if the Christian worldview is true, a day is coming when all the evil committed in this world will be reversed. All losses will be returned. All pain will be abolished. For those of us who have accepted the pardon offered by God through Jesus Christ, we will someday be reunited with those we miss today. The heavenly realm of God lacks pain, suffering, regret, or frustration. The justice and mercy of God reign in perfect balance: all wrongs are righted, all questions are answered, all doubt is removed, and all joy is returned. If Christianity is true, this often painful mortal experience will draw to a close, once and for all. We will experience justice and closure.

Atheist Richard Carrier, who divorced his wife to go polyamorous, seeks new sex partner

Finally, I just want any atheists reading this to know that I am now in my late 30s, with so much income and net worth that it would make Richard Carrier’s head spin. Since I was a teen, the thing I’ve wanted most was to be married and to have children. And yet unlike Richard Carrier, I am still saving my first kiss on the lips for that one woman. I am a virgin, and determined to keep it so until I marry. I never thought that the wealth that I saved for her was to be used to break the rules so I could get what I wanted right now. When I made my decision to serve God, it meant serving him according to his moral character, whether I got what I wanted or not. When Christ calls a man, he call him to die to himself and his own self-interest.

Renewing Your Mind | Is God Responsible for Human Wickedness? | May 8, 2015

No, the Apostle tells us in today's passage; not being a rank polytheist or one who engages in profound sexual deviancy does not mean one is exempted from the charge of unrighteousness. Romans 1:29–32 gives the other ethical consequences that flow from humanity's rejection of the God who is. We should not view this list as comprehensive; Paul does not give us every possible way that human beings can commit sin. However, the list is broad enough to cast the most negative light on the fallen human condition. No matter who we are or what we have done, all of us can find something on this list of which we are guilty. Some among the sons and daughters of Adam take their sins to the utmost conclusion in things such as murder and ruthlessness, while some merely gossip on occasion or mildly disobey their parents—transgressions that seem insignificant if we believe God grades on a curve. Either way, human beings outside the covenant community of Israel are in the worst predicament imaginable. In fact, Jews by birth are likewise in this awful state, as we will see in Romans 2–3.

Atheist Michael Shermer tries to rationally ground morality in debate with Frank Turek

So, when Shermer tries to shame Christians for behaviors in other times and places which our society here and now disagrees with, what he really means is “morality, objectively speaking, is nonsense, but I will use your moral sense that comes from your non-atheistic worldview to shame you, so that you won’t have the confidence to judge me for my immoral behavior”. And we need to get used to understanding this about atheists. Morality is nonsense to them, and their real goal is to get you off their back for their hedonism. For atheists, morality is just complying with arbitrary social customs which vary by time and place. There is nothing more to it than aping their neighbors (at least when their neighbors are watching). And they would have aped slave-owners, widow-burners and Nazi prison guards too, if they lived in that time and place. And shouted at Christians for disagreeing with them, just like Shermer did about gay marriage.

LGBT Is the Real Moral Majority

The comparison is instructive, because if you contrast these two movements and their relative political success in recent years, you see a very clear distinction that should (and does) make Republicans nervous. You see why the LGBT movement is winning and why religious conservatives are losing—and further, why evangelicals, the foot soldiers of the religious right, probably can’t do anything about it without in effect ceasing to be evangelicals (at least of the stripe they’ve been for 30-plus years).

Gather God’s People

Gather God ’ s People  aims to “aid you in your biblical understanding of corporate worship, in how to best plan for it, and in how to effectively and faithfully conduct it so that God alone is passionately praised by his redeemed people” (15). The authors divide the book into three sections. In Part 1, they give us a theological understanding of biblical worship (19–56). Part 2 primes us on planning worship services—in particular, reading, praying, and singing the Word of God as the primary elements of corporate worship (57–84). Part 3 discusses leading worship services from the standpoint of the church’s elders (85–119). In other words, if Part 2 is about the elements that should be present, Part 3 is the “how-to” for leaders to implement them each Sunday.

Alister McGrath’s C.S. Lewis– A LIfe: Part One

Alister McGrath, himself an academic, an apologetic, and a very fine writer for a lay audience who also happens to come from Protestant northern Ireland as well, writes very clearly and directly about Lewis, giving us a helpful chronicle of his whole life. Along the way, he helps us appreciate even more how so many of us who are Evangelicals have been nourished and nurtured in our faith journeys by Lewis. In my own case, I read the Screwtape Letters when I was in high school, in the late 60s, and continued to read everything else I could find by Lewis thereafter, branching out to read the other Inklings as well. C.S. Lewis was a man of letters, and as it turns out also a man of much letter writing as well. It is these latter missives that often best peel away the modern lacquer of hagiography, and help give us a clearer and truer picture of Lewis– a genuine Christian, a gifted writer, but not a saint.
