Is there a gospel in the stars? - Christian Research Institute

Over the years I have observed an alarming trend toward what I call “magic apologetics.” In place of an emphasis on such great apologetic verities as the creation of the cosmos, the resurrection of Christ, and the inspiration of Scripture, we are being bombarded with host of apologetic pretenders. One of the more curious brands of magic apologetics circulating through the Christian community is called the gospel in the stars (GIS). This apologetic posits that God from the beginning wrote the unique message of the gospel in the signs of the zodiac. At first blush this magic apologetic may appear to have merit; closer examination, however, exposes it as a counterfeit.

How You Can Actually Become More Generous

A few years ago, when my wife, Jenny, and I were watching the local TV news, one of the stories was about a low-income housing community in our city that had lost air conditioning in every single apartment. This was in the middle of July, and the weather was sweltering. The broadcast showed pictures of hundreds of people, including many children, sitting in the shade outside the apartment building, fanning themselves and trying not to move so they could stay cool. The man who owned the apartment complex issued a statement that because of costs, he would not be replacing the units immediately and that the tenants would have to find alternative means of cooling their apartments.

Book Review: Who Was Adam?

Introduction Ten years ago Dr. Hugh Ross and Dr. Fazale Rana of Reasons to Believe released their book "Who Was Adam?" that presented a scientific model the posited that Adam and Eve in the book of Genesis were the original pair of humans. They examined the latest discoveries and put forth predictions for the scientific community to evaluate. That book was one of my first apologetics books I read that convinced me of the historical accuracy of the Genesis account of origins. A decade later the authors have released a second edition ( softcover , Kindle , promo video ) that updates the reader on the latest discoveries regarding the origins of humanity. This is one that I have been anticipating for at least two years; let's see if it lives up to it. With this edition, Ross and Rana chose to keep the original edition intact in the first two parts of the book then evaluate the model in the third part. This review will provide a chapter-by-chapter summary of the book's contents to give the reader an idea of what to expect, but this review in no way should take the place of reading the book itself.

Critics of the executive order yesterday have zeroed in on this particular statement because in it, it is now argued that churches are liberated by the President’s executive order to make overtly political statement from the pulpit. Now at this point we need to note that the last thing Gospel minded churches need to do is to politicize their pulpits, but we also have to recognize that when the Bible is preached, there are political ramifications. And when there is an election campaign, some of the most important theological worldview and moral issues always come to the fore. Just to take an example in the 2016 presidential election, the issue of abortion was a stark distinction between the Republican and the Democratic candidates and the Republican and the Democratic Party platforms. There’s simply no mistaking this, and a faithful pastor preaching the Scripture and honoring the Gospel speaking of what this picture reveals about the sanctity of human life during the term that could involve a political campaign could indeed have been charged with violating the federal law in terms of this IRS reauthorization statute known as the Johnson Amendment.

‘Is Genesis History?’: Revisiting an Age-Old Debate

Ultimately, I worry that the methodology and mindset presupposed by Is Genesis History?  may inadvertently hinder our unity and witness as the church. Zealous atheists watching this film will likely find ammunition by which to confirm their warfare model of “faith versus science.” Sincere skeptics may experience it as an obstacle to faith. Christians who lack an interest in science or creation issues may experience the “college-crisis-of-faith” scenario above. Evolutionary creationists watching will likely feel their view was not well represented (for instance, in the final interview and conclusion). And old-earth creationists will probably feel simply ignored.

Whose Job Is It to Take Care of the Poor?

Whenever you see a left-leaning Christian talking to a conservative about poverty, it turns into a question of who should be taking care of the poor. I found myself in a debate about this the other day, and the gentleman I was talking to fell back on the argument that it was the Church’s job to take care of the poor, not the government. But is that really true?

How Do Christians Face the Reality of Martyrdom?

With the rise of ISIS in recent years, the church has been visually reminded of the reality of martyrdom in this world. With current events shedding more light on Christian martyrdom, the church should be careful to cultivate a biblical view of this important and rich subject. In reaching such a view we should find that martyrdom is an expected reality that all Christians should be prepared for, even if we are never asked to stand before an executioner. Christians must be reminded that we seek to make disciples of Christ in a world that hates Him. Martyrdom, therefore, is a solemn and powerful witness of those who are assured of an even more powerful message of Good News.

The Problem With Shaming Millennials for Living With Their Parents

The reality is that any looming housing crisis isn’t the fault of millennials. They’re not putting off the job search for an “emotionally comfortable” alternative, the wages simply aren’t there. Housing costs in cities that have jobs to offer are prohibitively high. And, unlike their parents, millennials are disinclined to become saddled with credit card debt. Large-scale economic fallout, set into motion well before most millennials were born, cannot be blamed on them nor should they be expected to solve it by making foolish financial decisions.

Wow. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Actually Tackles Some Really Heavy Issues

During the moments in Guardians when the screen isn’t jumping from space ship battle to moments of comic relief, the movie deals with surprisingly heavy themes. Child trafficking is key to the plot. There’s an uncomfortable scene featuring where sex robots dot the landscape of an outlaw bar, which could have been used to add a level of lust to the film and draw in the lowest common denominator to the audience.

Christian Apologetics Quotes: John Lennox

God is not an alternative to science as an explanation, he is not to be understood merely as a God of the gaps, he is the ground of all explanation: it is his existence which gives rise to the very possibility of explanation, scientific or otherwise. It is important to stress this because influential authors such as Richard Dawkins will insist on conceiving of God as an explanatory alternative to science – an idea that is nowhere to be found in theological reflection of any depth. Dawkins is therefore tilting at a windmill - dismissing a concept of God that no serious thinker believes in anyway. Such activity is not necessarily to be regarded as a mark of intellectual sophistication.

In the Gorgeous ‘Your Name,’ Love Is a Liturgy

Like Meyer’s Twilight series, which made teenage female desire palatable to the masses by translating it into vampiric bloodlust, Your Name uses its central conceit as a metaphor for the emotional yearnings and bodily insecurities inherent to adolescence. In other words, it’s a coming-of-age story, and the arc the characters follow is a natural one. At first, Taki and Metsuha assume that what they’re experiencing is a dream, and simply have fun with the respective lives they’ve fallen into. As they come to realize that their situation is indeed a real one—and that they’re in the same boat—they begin to work together, communicating through notes they leave in each other’s notebooks and phones, and even on their own skin via Sharpie markers. Eventually, they learn to “care” for each other in every sense of the word.

The Horror Facing the People of North Korea Every Day

North Korea’s official position is that the country is atheist. Citizens of the dictatorship are forced to worship the Kim family, and anyone who does not is subject to immediate punishment—arrest, torture or death, which could come in the form of a public execution. And often times the punishment is doled out for three generations, meaning that a person’s children and grandchildren would also be subject to repercussions of any crime that person is suspected of committing.

The Resurrection Answers Three Big Questions

“The resurrection of Jesus Christ is either one of the most wicked, vicious, heartless hoaxes ever foisted on the minds of human beings—or it is the most remarkable fact of history.” My father has often shared these words to me in person, and he’s written them in his books. The older I get, the more I realize they’re unmistakably true. There’s no middle ground with the resurrection of Jesus. Either it is a colossal fabrication or the most important event in history.

Judge Not?

So, Jesus is placing, as it were, a neon-red-blinking sign over others that tells us, “Caution: judge at your own risk.” It is meant to give us serious pause and examine ourselves before saying anything. Our fallen nature is profoundly selfish and proud and often hypocritical, judging ourselves indulgently and others severely. We are quick to strain gnats and swallow camels (Matthew 23:24), quick to take tweezers to another’s eye when we need a forklift for our own. It is better to “judge not” than to judge like this, since we will be judged in the same way we judge others.

Trump's Executive Order Fails to Address Most Pressing Religious Liberty Threats

In reality, what Trump issued today is rather weak. All it includes is general language about the importance of religious liberty, saying the executive branch “will honor and enforce” existing laws and instructing the Department of Justice to “issue guidance” on existing law; directives to the Department of the Treasury to be lenient in the enforcement of the Johnson Amendment; and directives to the secretaries of the Treasury, Labor, and Health and Human Services (HHS) to “consider issuing amended regulations” to “address conscience-based objections” to the HHS contraception mandate.

BreakPoint: President Trump’s Religious Freedom Order

I couldn’t agree more. And I’m thankful that at least so far this administration, unlike the last one, isn’t forcing that choice on Americans. Still, protecting religious freedom requires more than just noble sentiments. And here is where the executive order disappoints. After directing the federal government to “vigorously enforce Federal law’s robust protections for religious freedom,” the measures set forth in the order are, well, less than vigorous.

32
The Opposite of Love Isn’t Hate

Isn’t that the plot of the gospel? God’s relentless love toward us is demonstrated by his sacrifice while we were still an absolute mess. The apostle Paul says that Christ died for us “while we were still sinners.” He freely gave His love for us even though we wanted nothing to do with Him. There were no conditions to His love, no fine print. And even if there were never any change in our lives, not even an ounce of acknowledgment of his love, he would still love us the same way.

Evolutionary Informatics: Marks, Dembski, and Ewert Demonstrate the Limits of Darwinism | Evolution News

Authors Robert Marks, William Dembski, and Winston Ewert bring decades of experience in search algorithms and information theory to analyzing the capacity of biological evolution to generate diverse forms of life. Their conclusion is that no evolutionary process is capable of yielding different outcomes (e.g., new body plans), being limited instead to a very narrow range of results (e.g., finches with different beak sizes). Rather, producing anything of significant complexity requires that knowledge of the outcomes be programmed into the search routines. Therefore, any claim for the unlimited capacity of unguided evolution to transform life is necessarily implausible.

Though You Slay Me

It is powerful to praise God in any season, but these are the most precious praises of all, when we cling to Christ in life’s most horrible moments, knowing that he has walked our path, felt our barb, received our nail, and that suffering is precisely the place where we will know him best (Philippians 3:10).

A Brief History of the Christian Blogosphere

The rise of the blogosphere in the early 2000s yielded the genre of the “spiritual blogger.” From the comfort of their living rooms, lay people suddenly became household names, wielding influence over tens of thousands of followers. A new kind of Christian celebrity—and authority—was born: the speaker and author who comes to us (often virtually) as a seemingly autonomous voice, disembedded from any larger institution or ecclesial structure.

The Nylonase Story: When Imagination and Facts Collide | Evolution News

Let’s put to bed the fable that the nylon oligomer hydrolase EII, colloquially known as nylonase, arose by a frame-shift mutation, leading to the creation of a new functional protein fold. There is absolutely no need to postulate such a highly improbable event, and no justification for making this extravagant claim. Instead, there is a much more parsimonious explanation — that nylonase arose by a gene duplication event some time in the past, followed by a series of two mutations occurring after the introduction of nylon into the environment, which increased the nylon oligomer hydrolase activity of the nylB gene product to current levels. Could this series of events happen in forty years? Most certainly. Probably in much less time. In fact, it has been reported to happen in the lab under the right selective conditions. And most definitely, the evolution of nylonase does not call for the creation of a novel protein fold, nor did one arise. EII’s fold is part of the carboxylesterase fold family. Carboxylesterases serve many functions and have been around much longer than forty years.

How Does Trump’s Religious Liberty Executive Order Affect Churches?

This [executive] order is pretty much nothing. Section 1 [of the executive order] is just a policy statement; it may lead to good things for believers down the road, but it does nothing immediately. Section 2 on the Johnson Amendment does not say that churches should be allowed to endorse candidates. It says only that they should not be found guilty of implied endorsements on facts where secular organizations would not be. I have heard no stories of that happening. But the IRS does jawbone churches in a way that it does not appear to jawbone secular nonprofits. Maybe that’s what it’s supposed to be about. . . . The [attorney general]’s guidance is likely to be pretty religion-friendly, but again, this order in itself does nothing. And no one can sue to enforce this order; that is not uncommon in [executive orders]. [President] Obama’s order on federal contractors and gay rights said the same thing.

Why Christians Must Continue to Guard the Truth of the Gospel | Cold Case Christianity

Is you watched the video, did you notice a shift in the Gospel message? I played the video for our church and simply opened the floor for comments. An astute 16 year old girl observed, “The presentation says nothing about the next life at all. It says nothing about the judgment of God or the fact that we are sinners who are going to someday go to either Heaven or Hell”. I think she nailed it. This “New” Gospel (actually a reformulation of older “Social Gospels”) is focused on what God can do to help us heal our world today. It says nothing about our individual need for forgiveness and our need for a Savior; it also fails to describe our destiny as eternal beings headed for a life beyond the grave. It assumes we are here to make this world better, and all we need is a little help from our friend, Jesus.

Why Does John Piper Complicate Saving Faith?

I think that’s what Paul was getting at when he said in the case of unbelievers that Satan had blinded their minds “to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God” (2 Corinthians 4:4). In other words, to come to a true saving faith, whether a little child or an adult, you have to experience the miracle of spiritual sight of the supremely valuable glory of Christ, the image of God. In other words, Christ must be perceived as supremely glorious, that a 6-year-old experiences that. He would never use those words probably, unless he’s incredibly well-taught. But he wouldn’t need to use the words. He needs the miracle, though, of seeing Jesus Christ as trusted as the best of all. The most glorious and valuable of all.
