Watch a Dude Pop a Huge Balloon—While Standing Inside of It—In Slow Motion

YouTube stars “The Slow Mo Guys” have one of the greatest schticks on the internet: They think of ridiculous stunt/experiments (hitting Jello with a tennis racket, shooting a massive flame-thrower, putting a tongue in a mousetrap), all while filming it in super slow motion. Their latest video—of one of them getting inside of a giant balloon and popping it—is way more entertaining than it sounds. Here are the most pointless 7-minutes of your day. You’re welcome.

Why I Am a Christian (David Wood, Former Atheist)

http://www.acts17.net I'm David Wood. Lots of people have been asking me how I became a Christian, because I sometimes mention that I'm a former atheist but I usually don't share much of my story. Here's a video explaining why I left atheism and became convinced that Jesus is Lord and that he died on the cross for sins and rose from the dead. David Wood's Christian Testimony

15 of Soren Kierkegaard’s Most Challenging Quotes

Christian existentialism is a theo-philosophical movement which takes an existentialist approach to Christian theology. - The Sickness Unto Death, is a book written by Danish philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard in 1849 under the pseudonym Anti-Climacus. A work of Christian existentialism. - In The Sickness Unto Death, Kierkegaard personifies an attitude with the average citizen (spissborger). This is an individual who is unconsciously fleeing from the opportunity to live an authentic life. This average citizen often appears as "morally superior" to others, but really this is an unreflected individual. The individual are being swallowed up by social norms and others expectations, without even being aware of this. The result is that the individual becomes alienated, both from himselves and the society. - An individual's values must be the result of an "existential awareness". The important thing is to preserve the independence and responsibility in interacting with other people, and it's precisely this ability the character never did develop. - A synthesis of individual freedom and existential integrity, however, can only be reached when the individual have seen through all the deception of society.

Why Do Churches Treat Singleness Like a Problem?

Thank you so much for writing this. Not all of this applies to me, but much of it does. I'm 34, single, happy to stay that way, and will be so for the foreseeable future. Churches having such a hard time with singles in ministry is a big concern for me, as I'm pondering if God is calling me to full time ministry, and I know my martial status could very well be a road block to that. A friend of mine was turned down for multiple youth pastor positions because he wasn't married. He did find a gig in the end, and did get married after taking a position, but I'm seriously concerned that I'm going to find myself beating my head against the same wall.

Four Steps to Kill Nagging Sins

In the gospel, God has given us the resources that we need to deal with nagging sins. Let me just mention three: patience, pardon, and power. The gospel means that God has “perfect patience” (1 Timothy 1:16) for us even amidst our struggles with nagging sins. To truly kill a nagging sin, we need to know that God has not given up on us. Even when we have lost patience with ourselves, he is still there, like the Prodigal’s loving father, calling us back to obedience and joy.

God Wants You to Stop Stressing Over Your Circumstances

We are invited to follow David’s example, and redirect our focus by speaking to our own souls. “My soul finds rest in God alone. He alone is my rock and my salvation … He is my fortress, I will never be shaken” (Psalm 62:1). Mind you, David said all this while being chased by Saul’s army. If he can train himself to take refuge in God, can we not?

F-A-C-T-S on Prayer - Christian Research Institute

There is an application here to what is happening today in the Christian church. Hordes of Christians are looking for divine encounters in all the wrong places. Some travel to Toronto in hopes the Holy Spirit has landed there. Others go to Detroit because they’ve heard that a pastor there is blessing water which triggers revival and miracles. Some make pilgrimage to Pensacola, Florida to the “outpouring” there. Many people falsely think that reality can be reduced to a personal experience of enlightenment, when all the while authentic spiritual experience is discovered in God’s inerrant Word.

Christianity's Five Most Countercultural Virtues

Faith doesn’t mean there’s an absence of doubt, mystery, or complexity, but it allows you to have confidence in something—a relationship with someone. To invest your trust and hope in any one thing is notable enough, but to have faith in an unseen, unquantifiable, supernatural God is one of the most countercultural acts imaginable.

How the Church Saved My Marriage | Rachael Marie Collins

My husband and I were married in April 2008. Despite a lovely courtship and beautiful wedding, the first eighteen months of our marriage were terrible. Although we loved one another, we were unprepared for the daily compromises, negotiations and renunciations of self that a loving and successful marriage requires. Independent and extremely willful, we fought. We fought so ferociously and so often that after we entered couples therapy, our therapist told my husband that he should leave me. It would always be this way, she said. Things would never “change.”

The Data Don’t Lie: Couples That Pray Together Actually Do Stay Together

The academy is pretty divided, ideologically speaking. Most scholars, particularly in sociology, have a more progressive and often more secular perspective on the world than do ordinary Americans. There are few opportunities for scholars who don’t share the same ideological commitment to engage in a meaningful way. Despite our differences, Wolfinger and I share a commitment to the truth and to trying to understand what’s happening in the data. For people who are skeptical of our empirical claims about marriage and church, it’s important to underline the fact that a progressive was also doing the statistics.

Allah and Muhammad Explain Where the Sun Sets (Quran 18:83-86; Sunan Abu Dawud 3991)

http://www.answeringmuslims.com According to the Qur'an (18:83-86), a man named Dhul-Qarnayn (whom commentators often identify as Alexander the Great or Cyrus the Great) reached the place where the sun sets, and he found it going down into a spring of muddy water. Modern Muslims, aware of the fact that this is impossible, try to reinterpret the passage to mean that the sun, through some sort of optical illusion, merely seemed to Dhul-Qarnayn to be setting in a pool. Unfortunately for Muslims who want to reinterpret the Qur'an, however, Muhammad himself said that the sun sets in a pool of water (Sunan Abu Dawud 3991). So unless our Muslim friends want to tell us that they understand the Qur'an better than their prophet, we have no choice but to assume that Allah meant what he said about the sun setting in a murky spring.

Parenting Is First About My Sin

Parenting is not first and foremost about our children’s sins. It is first about ours. Yes, our children are in need of our gentleness and careful attention to help remove the childhood specks from their eyes. And we first, and continually, need to remove the adult logs from ours, so we can genuinely help our children, and not harm them. Or to put it positively, as Jim and Lynne Jackson write, “The parenting journey provides one of life’s greatest opportunities for spiritual growth” ( How to Grow a Connected Family , 2).

13 End Times Errors to Avoid

As I mentioned above, eschatology is about Jesus. We must not turn our study of his return, then, into a catalogue of events in which we’re more concerned about determining the relationship between the universal bar code and mark of the beast than worshiping the Lamb slain. Rather, we should be thankful that a study of eschatology gives us a fuller picture of the One who came first as a suffering servant but will return in majesty and power.

19
Let's Agree to Disagree

In my estimation, serious false doctrine is often promoted in Christian circles under the pretense of "asking questions" and "having conversations." As I said, there is nothing wrong with genuine questions and conversations. Yet certain questions reveal that the questioner already presupposes the answer to his own question. For example, consider Bell's classic question, "Would a loving God really send people to suffer for eternity?" Embedded within this question are certain assumptions about God and what it means for Him to be loving, and by extension also assumptions about the human condition and our relationship to God. The way the question is worded reveals its own answer. Love Wins was an attempt by Bell to justify his assumptions about God, not to honestly wrestle with Scripture and strive to submit himself to it.

Did the Early Christians Get the Jesus Story Wrong?

Each of these books, though different in specific topic, tells the same overall story: Ehrman, once an evangelical who attended Moody Bible Institute and Wheaton College, has now discovered, along with the consensus of modern scholarship, that the New Testament—and the Gospels in particular—don’t provide a trustworthy account of the historical Jesus. Instead, what we have are books that are forgeries, contain contradictions, have morally questionable teachings, and have been edited and changed through the centuries.

An Open Letter to Megyn Kelly | The Stream

Unfortunately our world has become the soapbox for every person of every race/color/creed/culture etc. We should all have our own talk show so we can vent our thoughts at each other and continue to insult/demean/condemn/ or whatever, rather than love and understand. We make life so difficult for our new generation. Truly there is really only one solution in solving our problems. Stop everything and just start over from the beginning loving as God has intended. Ok, I know I have now started something! I know the wheels are already turning on how you are going to respond to this post. Stop! Stop and think. I really don’t care what you think about God and or the Bible. One thing you cannot deny, whether you believe the Bible or not, it does have some basic good knowledge on how to get along. I don’t care if you believe in God or not, but the pretext that he does or does not exist does not really matter, the symbolism of what is taught about him is the principle of how we are to live our lives. God, isn’t the problem, our beliefs are not our problem, our opinions are not our problem.

Can People of Color Really Make Themselves at Home?

InterVarsity was like a house with all sorts of staff living in it. Most of the white staff felt like they owned the house. They felt free to move the furniture, decorate the walls, put their feet up, and cook the foods they liked to eat. But others on our team, though they “lived” in the house, were just guests. As a guest, it’s impolite to move the furniture or criticize the decor, and if you don’t like the food served, you don’t complain—because if you complain, you’re not invited back.

Studies have shown that if children grow up without a mom and dad, there’s increased risk that they’re going to fail in school. Kids without two parents are more likely to not graduate from college, to be involved in substance or alcohol abuse, to experience depression and the risk of suicide. And it increases the risk that they will divorce or bear children outside of marriage.

Five Ways God Relates to You

God is our Creator. We are his creatures. He is the potter. We are the clay. Therefore, we do well to remember that, as the Creator, God gets the final call on the purpose for our existence. We exist in his image, for his glory, and every moment of every day should be lived with our Creator’s purpose in mind. It is good to know that we are not God, and to be reminded that our fullest and longest lasting happiness will be found in his purpose for us, not the one we might choose for ourselves.

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” Live and let live, do not restrict the rights of others. The so called “Christian” majority that has tried to force their beliefs on others through our Government are now claiming to be victims because lately they are not the special protected group any longer. If you want to practice a religion, great, have at it hoss. If you try and force others to adhere to your beliefs through laws created on your beliefs, I will fight you tooth and nail. If this is what the author is talking about they are right, myself and many other people are waging a war against intolerant, self serving, religious zealots who think their religion is the law of the land. I have seen first hand what happens when religion takes over a Government. Just ask normal average citizens in countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia how religion based Government is working out for them. To recognize a core belief of the religion in question, “get off the cross, we need the wood”.

Why It’s Foolish to Underestimate the Gift of Faith

The fact is, without the gift of faith the mission simply can’t get done. The whole purpose of spiritual gifts is love for God and power for mission, so the gift of faith is mission-critical. The missionary hoping to break into a closed community in a foreign country must exercise the gift of faith. The church planter asking God to create a healthy, thriving church where none was before must exercise the gift of faith. The college minister looking to launch a new student movement on campus must exercise the gift of faith. Attempting to go to battle without this gift is, I fear, like a special ops team trying to take the hill without weapons. It might be possible, but it’ll be far more brutal and bloody than it otherwise would’ve been, had the right weapons been deployed.

4 Problems with Free-Spirit Theology

37 Some Heroes Just Invented a Pizza Box Made Out of Pizza

The pizza box is one of those simple items that everyone is always trying to improve, without really making a improvements. Sure, a little spot for dipping sauce is nice; that tiny white stool that prevents the top from messing up the cheese is kind of handy; those insulated bags that carry several boxes do keep the pizza somewhat hot. But really, no one has revolutionized the pizza box. Until now. Finally, Vinnie’s Pizzeria in Brooklyn is disrupting the pizza box game.

Dostoevsky vs. Superman

Crime and Punishment is rightly hailed for its psychological depth and realism, but it has another claim to fame that makes it required reading, especially for Christians concerned about moral relativism’s devastating effects on the modern world. Just as Alfred Lord Tennyson, in his epic poem  In Memoriam  (published in 1850 but written mostly in the 1830s), wrestled with the implications of Darwinian natural selection more than a decade prior to the publication of  The Origin of Species  (1859), so Dostoevsky, in  Crime and Punishment , exposed the dangers and delusions of Nietzsche’s theory of the übermensch more than 20 years before Nietzsche introduced that figure to the world in  Thus Spake Zarathustra  (1883).

7 Sure Signs That America Has Declared War on Our Faith

According to Jeremy Tedesco, Senior Counsel with the Alliance Defending Freedom, "We asked the Colorado Supreme Court to take this case to ensure that government understands that its duty is to protect the people's freedom to follow their beliefs personally and professionally, not force them to violate those beliefs as the price of earning a living. Jack, who has happily served people of all backgrounds for years, simply exercised the long-cherished American freedom to decline to use his artistic talents to promote a message and event with which he disagrees, and that freedom shouldn't be placed in jeopardy for anyone."

Christian Thinkers 101: A Crash Course on St. Anselm

Can faith and reason be compatible? Does reason support the truth claims of Christianity? Many people today believe in a false dichotomy that forces faith and reason into separate categories—but thinkers like St. Anselm, a medieval Italian, have offered compelling arguments for integrating faith and reason. St. Anselm’s ontological argument for God’s existence was a significant, though controversial, contribution that still impacts Christian apologetics. Here’s your crash course on the life and accomplishments of St. Anselm—and why he matters today.

Parents: Dont Train Your Kids On Your Own

I became a Christian when my first two children were very young. They have no memory of me prior to my conversion. But all four of my kids were raised in Christian community . I didn’t train, mentor or prepare them on my own, and you shouldn’t either. Young Christians are facing a formidable task as they get ready to enter an adult culture growingly hostile to the Christian worldview. While Christian leaders may disagree about the severity of the problem , the evidence of attrition amongst 17-30 year olds is well documented . If our kids aren’t trained and exposed to the challenges at an early age , they are far more likely to leave the Church. And while it is tempting to think we, as parents, are all our kids will ever need, this is simply untrue. Parents, don’t train your kids on your own.

Why Is the Ascension So Important?

The ascended Christ guarantees that you can know you are forgiven, accepted, and delighted in by God the Father. He is our advocate who intercedes constantly for us. Keller explains: “So when the Bible says that Jesus stands as our advocate and representative before the throne of the universe, it is a way to say that he is ascended and not just levitated. It doesn’t matter what you have been or what you have done. It doesn’t matter how flawed and foolish you are. When the eyes of God the Father look at you, they see the ascended Jesus; when they listen to you, they hear him. When God looks and listens to you, he sees and hears infinite beauty . . . He sees Jesus not sitting at the right hand but standing on his behalf, advocating for him.”

48 Challenge: Is Pig’s Meat Allowed Today or Not?

First, that God was angry with the Israelites for eating pig and described those who ate pig as irritating does not entail that there is something inherently or enduringly wicked about pig eating. For instance, I may set a bedtime for my nephew at 9 pm and get angry with him if he violates it. But that doesn't entail that I have any objective reason for thinking nephews should be in bed by 9 pm and there is clearly nothing inherently or enduringly wicked about staying up past 9 pm. Thus, that God is angry with pig eating and finds pig eaters irritating in Isaiah 65:3-5 is not sufficient grounds, in itself, to tell us that there is a universal or enduring moral principle about not eating pigs.

Bey and Bey's God

It would be a mistake to interpret any of the tracks in isolation. This is an album best taken in whole, because it tells a story. My colleagues noted last week on CT's “Quick to Listen” podcast that you can read Lemonade as a modern-day book of Psalms, which fan across the spectrum from angry shouting to songs of deliverance. The music and lyrics tell a story: first the singer intuits that something is going on in her marriage, but doesn’t want to believe it; then, when it’s confirmed, she goes through stages of anger and grief, eventually deciding that it’s worth pursuing reconciliation. We’re meant to understand that this is a personal narrative—likely for Beyoncé, but for many other women, and in particular, black women—and it’s laid out in chapters with text on the screen, some of it overtly religious: Intuition, Denial, Anger, Apathy, Emptiness, Accountability, Reformation, Forgiveness, Resurrection, and Redemption.

The Fourfold Beauty of a Godly Woman

We who have trusted in Christ are not only descendants of Eve, but now we are descendants of Sarah, the free woman (Galatians 4:31). We are children of promise and we are no longer in bondage to Eve’s nature. In 1 Peter 3:1–6 and Hebrews 11:11–12, we receive the commendation of Sarah’s faith, and we are pointed to her life as an example of biblical womanhood. As we imitate the faith of Sarah, we can leverage our God-given gender and unique gifts to glorify our God and advance his kingdom.
