1) Transgender movement reveals cultural momentum towards moral nihilism and sexual anarchy

The Transgender Tipping Point

In the beaux-arts lobby of the Nourse Theater in San Francisco, men in deep V-necks and necklaces walk by women with crew cuts and plaid shirts buttoned to the top. Boys carrying pink backpacks kiss on the lips, while long-haired ladies whose sequined tank tops expose broad shoulders snap selfies. About 1,100 people, many gleefully defying gender stereotypes, eventually pack the auditorium to hear the story of an unlikely icon. “I stand before you this evening,” Laverne Cox, who stars in the Netflix drama Orange Is the New Black, tells the crowd, “a proud, African-American transgender woman.” The cheers are loud and long. Almost one year after the Supreme Court ruled that Americans were free to marry the person they…

3 Challenging Eyewitnesses of the Resurrection - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

"Regarding eyewitness being good evidence. True, the further we go back in history, the more we have to rely on eyewitness testimony. However, the likelihood of an event occurring significantly affects the credibility of the eyewitness. If there was an eyewitness to a car crash, the car crash event itself does not diminish credibility, because those happen all the time. But if there was an eyewitness to extraterrestrials, or ghosts, or godzilla, or someone rising from the dead, it significantly diminishes the credibility of the eyewitness testimony because the possibility that the eyewitness was mistaken or lying increases. Do you see the difference?"

So, why not simply ignore these “Christ conspiracies”? I mean, as long as I’ve had a personal experience of faith in Jesus, isn’t that all that matters? If I feel deep inside that Jesus is alive, why be concerned with what Dan Brown or Reza Aslan or Bart Ehrman has to say?

Marilyn Manson Joining 'Sons of Anarchy' Because Why Not?

Marilyn Manson, as you may recall, was making waves in the late '90s for being the sort of musician parents worried their kids were listening to. He's never totally retired, but his public presence has definitely dialed down, which isn't exactly a devastating loss to culture or anything. But now he's making a comeback , on TV of all places. The FX hit Sons of Anarchy , which follows the adventures of an outlaw motorcycle gang, is bringing Manson on as a series regular as an imprisoned white supremacist. It's surprising, but perhaps more surprising were Manson's surprisingly sweet reasons for joining the show.

Tullian Tchividjian: Reflections On My 'Break-Up' With The Gospel Coalition

First, I want to say that I'm sorry. I'm sorry for saying things in my own defense. One of the things that the gospel frees you to do is to never have to bear the burden of defending yourself. Defending the gospel is one thing. But when a defense of the gospel becomes a defense of yourself, you've slipped back under "a yoke of slavery." I slipped last week. I'm an emotional guy. And in my highly charged emotional state, I said some things in haste, both publicly and privately, that I regret. I never want anything I say to be a distraction from the mind-blowing good news of the gospel and last week I did. I got in the way. When you feel the need to respond to criticism, it reveals how much you've built your identity on being right. I'm an idolater and that came out last week. Because Jesus won for you, you're free to lose…and last week I fought to win. I'm sorry you had to see that. Lord have mercy…

Does Satan have access to our minds? While we would greatly overestimate Satan’s power by supposing that he can interact directly with us in a physical sense, an equal and opposite error would be to suppose that he does not have access to our minds. First, while Satan cannot read our minds he can influence […]

It Doesn’t Hurt to Look, Does It?

One way to answer this question is to consider the factors that predict relationship commitment. One is whether or not we perceive we have attractive alternatives to our existing relationship . When we believe that our prospect for attractive partners is abundant, we will be less committed to the relationship we already have. Interestingly, this phenomenon seems to hold true whether the alternatives are real and concrete, or whether the alternatives are only in our imagination. It doesn’t seem to matter if a potential partner is standing in front of us or if we’re viewing an attractive porn star on a computer. While porn actors are not really an option for most of us, spending time in their company can give us the impression that we live in a world with many available alternatives. And when we believe we have other attractive choices, we’re instinctively less committed to the partner we already have.

Meriam Ibrahim Was Forced to Give Birth to Baby Maya While in Chains

He continued: “While U.S. liberals fight for “women’s health care,” their leader is letting a 27-year-old mother give birth to a premature baby girl in a dirty overcrowded jail without medical attention. If that’s “championing women’s rights,” then the international community should consider itself warned. The same politicians who promised not to “close their eyes” on women’s needs are obviously too busy fighting for free birth control and universal abortion to hear the cries of a two-day old baby girl, whose Christian mother is just months away from being flogged and hanged.”

Did Jesus Say Anything About Homosexuality?

I have nothing but compassion for those trapped in sexual sin. My hope is that readers will read the entire article before drawing conclusions. Those who strongly believe in the Bible and God's will regarding sexual behavior also strongly believe in unconditional love and forgiveness. To say that authentic Christians hate or fear those trapped in the homosexual lifestyle demonstrates a gross misunderstanding of the Christian faith.

Obama Administration Opens The Door To Taxpayer-Funded Sex Reassignment Surgery

The Department of Health and Human Services’ Departmental Appeals Board, an internal review structure within the byzantine federal agency, issued a ruling that ended a ban on Medicare even considering covering sex reassignment surgery and related care because a fear of “serious complications” resulting from the “experimental” surgery. That language was issued in 1981, and most medical professional organizations now consider sex reassignment surgery a safe and accepted procedure. The DAB ruling noted the change in how sex reassignment surgery is understood 33 years after the Medicare ban was issued.

There is a crying need in the church today for men to be men. But competing visions for what a man is to be —some growing out of popular culture and others arising from flawed teaching in the church—are exacerbating the problem.

“Reader beware! If you don’t want to be inspired to love quirky, diverse, often unlovable, certainly sinful people—like those in your church—well, put this book down now. Rob Bentz seems to think this is precisely what God had in mind when he redeemed us and planted us in a local church. Personally, I’d rather be entertained in a church full of people like me who are easy to get along with. Bentz says otherwise. Of course, he’s right, which is why this may be one of the most important books on the church you read this year.” —Mark Galli ,  Editor, Christianity Today

God's Not Dead: Atheistic Evolution Rests Upon Irrationalism and Blind Faith

The biggest problem for the evolutionary theory: It is a theory. A theory is not a material object by definition. It is abstract and immaterial. The material-only evolutionist posits the idea, only the physical exists, while he is asserting an idea that is not physical. Ideas, theories, and hypotheses are not physical objects. They are immaterial. The evolutionist uses an immaterial theory to assert that it is only possible for the material cosmos to exist. One can discern, with just a superficial examination of the materialist’s claims, that their theory is self-nullifying: it commits philosophical suicide. We should place this reality before them and drive them to the truth that their theories are absurd. We must defend the truth in Christ to the extent that all men bow to His Lordship or remain silent. The goal is for their knee to bow and their tongue to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. If not, let their tongues hang silent.

The False Teachers: Creflo Dollar

A few weeks ago I set out on a series of articles through which I am scanning the history of the church—from its earliest days all the way to the present time—to examine some of Christianity’s most notable false teachers and to examine the false doctrine each of them represents. Along the way we have visited such figures as Joseph Smith  (Mormonism), Ellen G. White  (Adventism),  Norman Vincent Peale  (Positive Thinking) and Benny Hinn (Faith Healing). Today we turn to one of the chief proponents of the popular but sinister prosperity gospel.

Ten Books for Eager Reading — The 2014 Summer Reading List

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is experiencing something of a renaissance in interest and influence in recent years. A biography by Eric Metaxas reached the best-seller lists and various other projects have drawn ample attention. Charles Marsh, a professor of religious studies at the University of Virginia, now arrives with Strange Glory , a massive and important biography of Bonhoeffer. Serious readers will welcome this book. Of all the books on this list, this one is likely to have the most lasting influence. It is hard to imagine a more comprehensive or substantial biography of Dietrich Bonhoeffer arriving in this generation. Marsh, who also directs the Project on Lived Theology at the University of Virginia, has written a compelling account of one of the twentieth century’s most compelling figures. It is not to be missed. Bonhoeffer was a man of contradictions. He was a man of tremendous personal courage and moral force. His defiance of Naziism cost him his life. Offered continued safety in America, he insisted on returning to his people. He was also prophet of a Christian ecclesiology that was hammered out in the crucible of horrifying times.

The Gospel Coalition - A Tale of Two Amnesiacs

While acknowledging the popularity of this particular type of amnesia storyline, my favorite fictional case of amnesia is quite the opposite: in the film The Muppets Take Manhattan , Kermit the frog and his friends arrive starry-eyed in New York City full of idealistic dreams of performing their show on Broadway. After many trials and travails, Kermit finally finds a producer who wants to back his show. But as Kermit rushes to tell his friends the good news, he is hit by a car and loses his memory. His post-amnesia life at an ad agency is dull, bland, and full of co-workers exactly like him (and with strangely similar names). In contrast to the "normal" amnesia storyline, Kermit actually has an exciting and meaningful life waiting for him if only he could remember it. Only through his subconscious recollection of the opening number from his Broadway show do his friends find him and bring him back in time for opening night.

27 Tried evangelizing lately? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. An Open Letter to Male Virgins

For women, men's disinterest can seem like a knock on our beauty and desirability. Depending on where we find our value, that rejection can throw our own self-worth into question. But where women may blame unwanted abstinence on some lack in ourselves, men seem to read sexual inexperience as a fundamental failing, or even evidence of women's universal aversion to or even contempt.

Reflections on My “Break Up” with The Gospel Coalition | Liberate

Pastor Tullian, Many of us who have listened in to you and whom you haven’t even been aware of or know love you and your ministry dearly. It would be easy to say something along the lines of “The proof is in the pudding” or “The flavour comes when the water is hottest” in a means to attack you or your ministry. That is not the case. Your message and ministry has liberated and touched so very dearly the hearts of many, and this reflection and heartfelt honesty is a reflection of your true heart. A heart united and one with Christ, that even in the midst of an identity crisis has shone through with this post. Our inner self always longs to do what is in agreement with God and His righteousness, but the dust of this world does cling to our feet. Jesus washes the feet of those who follow Him, and just like he said to Peter “those who have already bathed do not need to be washed fully again”. God knew about this when He ordained your ministry, and He knew where your heart would go, and what it would do in response. So may this serve to give you a renewed fire and passion for the Gospel of our Lord, where the work of God is hindered by no man against or within us.

31 Do You Really Want Answers? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

More than sixty years ago, in The Abolition of Man , C.S. Lewis challenged Christian scholars to enter the “town square” and the “market place of ideas.” He argued that if we failed to do so, we would become “men without chests:” a culture of heartless people satisfied with our own subjectivity and divorced from any common agreement of what is right and wrong; a culture of disconnected individuals who care little for what is immutable and enduring, accurate or true. Lewis warned of a time when life’s big questions would lie fallow in a field of disingenuous inquiry, where shallow people with shallow minds would have little interest in a harvest of meaningful and objective answers.

New Atheisms Wardrobe Malfunction

Essentially, the idea behind the Courtier’s Reply is that it is obvious (or should be to any rational person) that there is no basis for belief in God, just as it is obvious that the Emperor has no clothes. But as we saw earlier in the context of Dawkins’ references to the Tooth Fairy, it is not at all obvious that there is no basis for belief in God. And even if the New Atheists think otherwise, they cannot sensibly base their arguments on such an idea on pain of circularity.

Renewing Your Mind | The Sovereignty of God | May 30, 2014

Resounding throughout the pages of Scripture is the proclamation that God is King. And the concept most closely associated with His kingship is His sovereignty. To say that God is sovereign is not to say merely that He is stronger than everyone else, although this is true. Rather, to call Him sovereign is to ascribe to Him a rule and authority that transcends space and time, leaving nothing outside its scope. In this lesson, Dr. Lawson examines the nature and extent of God’s sovereign rule, showing how a biblical understanding of this topic can change the way we view the progress of history, the events of the present world, and the circumstances of our own lives.

Liberty University fines students for not listening to cult leader

As a Mormon, Beck is not some casual adherent; the church and the need to spread its message consumes his life. He opened with a tearful confession that he doesn’t spend every possible moment studying his church’s teachings. Among other historical artifacts on display during the presentation, he displayed the pocket watch that Joseph Smith surrendered immediately before his death. One would imagine such an artifact would be rare and highly valued among his co-religionists, and you’d expect to see it in a museum, not a preacher’s pocket. Beck often alluded to his own prophetic calling by God, considering it an honor to be in God’s service as a leader in his church. To be able to take his Mormon theology and preach to what he identified as  “the biggest collection of Christian youth meeting in America today” is a privilege that Beck surely takes seriously. (The self-conscious references to being a national religious leader echoed Rev. Moon’s charge to Liberty’s current provost, Ron Godwin, to take the Moonie cultist message to the evangelical world.

Twenty-Five Bloggers in One Sentence Each

Many people don't have the time to read more than one or two bloggers on a regular basis. But, it turns out, you don't really need to. Most of us say the same thing over and over again, with the incidentals tweaked according to the latest kerfuffle, as per the maxim, “if people don’t know what your passion is, you don’t have one.” So here, for the time-constrained among you, is a summary of what the major blogs I read (excluding the academic theology ones, which vary a bit more) say in virtually every post. You'll notice that the final entry is blank - hence the provision of a comments section ...

38 Apologetics Quotes: Josh and Sean McDowell - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

“You must love the LORD your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind” (Matthew 22:36-37). The problem with many people is that they seem to love God only with their hearts. The truth about Christ never gets to their minds. We’ve been given minds enabled by the Holy Spirit to know God, as well as hearts to love him and wills to choose him. We need to function in all three areas to have a full relationship with God and to glorify him. I don’t know how it is with you, but my heart can’t rejoice in what my mind has rejected. My heart and mind were created to work in harmony together. Never has anyone been called on to commit intellectual suicide by trusting Christ as Savior and Lord.

39 Did Matthew Think He Was Writing Scripture? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

While this apostolic self-awareness may be easy to show for authors like Paul, what about the gospels which, technically speaking, are formally anonymous?  Do their authors exhibit awareness that they were writing something like Scripture?  To explore this further, let us just consider just one of our gospels, namely the Gospel of Matthew.

Apologetics Movement 'Has Only Just Begun,' says Alex McFarland - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

"The fact that people would come from 35 states to hear essentially a two-day theology lecture, it shows a couple of things: Number one, how hungry people are spiritually. And number two, I think, how concerned people are about the spiritual condition of our nation. But number three, how willing people are to learn and become equipped to defend the faith," McFarland told CP.

41 Hypocrisy: A characteristic of humanity - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The charge of hypocrisy doesn’t place the Christian out of step with the biblical description of humanity.  The world is broken, and faith is not a quick fix.  If the Bible is true, you would expect hypocrisy to still plague those who believe.  But hypocrisy isn’t solely a characteristic of believers.  It’s a characteristic of humanity.  And rather than nullifying faith, hypocrisy is simply a confirmation of the fact that we need a savior.  To judge someone who believes, we must either deny your own humanity, or hold others to judgmental standards that we ourselves don’t follow.

God’s Fourth Commandment was to keep the Sabbath. God said that because in six ordinary earth-rotation days He created the earth and the universe and all that is in them, (Exodus 20:11) therefore He commanded that the children of Israel were to live their lives accordingly, i.e. to work six days and rest on the Sabbath, the seventh day (Exodus 20:9–11). It makes no sense to suppose, as some do, that those ‘days’ meant they lasted thousands or even millions of years. If so, the idea would logically lead to the notion that the Israelites should work for 6000 years before a rest of 1000 years, or that they should work for six million years, before a million-year rest, which is quite ridiculous. God’s Word consistently interprets itself.

Why Read the Classics?

My first defense of the classics is one that may seem surprising:  we should read the classics because they provide superior entertainment. I grant that this is truer for people who have been educated to love the classics and who have developed a taste for them.  I need to add, though, that everyone can develop that taste.  No one is barred from the classics, contrary to false claims about elitism.  For centuries the classics formed the basis of education at every level, starting in grade school.  It was not until the advent of the contemporary decline of culture and a general laziness of mind that has settled on Western societies that the classics have seemed to bar people.  Happily, there are pockets of the evangelical world that have continued to value the classics.

The Gospel Coalition - Jesus Is Not a Cagefighter

My manly  bona fides : I spent sixteen years in the Marine Corps and sixteen seconds (cumulatively) riding bulls. I’ve spent my summers in 104-degree weather baling hay, shoeing horses, castrating hogs, and running laps for sadistic football coaches. I’ve fixed pump jacks in Texas oil fields and made auto parts in a Missouri factory. I’ve changed avionics on F-18s, tires on Humvees, and a carburetor on a ‘76 Gremlin.  I’ve hunted for snipe and fished for shark. I’ve eaten rattlesnake, alligator, and the pork patty from an MRE. I’ve stoically endured tornados, typhoons, and a two-year-old toddler. I keep a .40 caliber Glock under my pillow. My hero is John Wayne.  The semi-conclusive counter-argument to my manliness: I own a lot of Celine Dion albums.  In other words, while there is some evidence that I am—or at least once was—a fairly “manly man,” I don’t always fit the culture’s ideal of masculinity. Sure, compared to a skinny jeans-wearing hipster, I’m a model of virility.

46 How We Glorify God by Sleeping - Stand to Reason Blog

We glorify God by making known his greatness. Human sleep illuminates God’s nature by means of contrast and difference. Humans must sleep and can die if they do not. God’s sleeplessness shows his independence; our sleepfulness reveals our dependence. We cannot not sleep; God cannot sleep. God is blessed in himself, which includes his self-existence and independence. He has the source of life and joy in himself (1 Thess. 1:9; Ps. 36:9; John 1:3–4; Jer. 32:36–41; Zeph. 3:17) and is in need of nothing to possess these things. Sleep brings glory to God by showing that we are not blessed in ourselves and must receive blessing from God’s hand. If we are to possess existence, life, joy or anything at all, we must receive them from God as gifts of grace. Appropriately then, we glorify God in sleep without being able to help it. Sleep shows my creatureliness in contrast to the Almighty Creator who gives me life….

47 How on Earth Did Jesus Become a God? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Recently I have been doing some work on the Gospel of John and first-century Jewish monotheism.  Anyone who explores the high Christology in John is forced to ask how it would have (or could have) emerged within a monotheistic context.  How could early Jews have believed in the one true God of Israel, and also have believed that Jesus was divine?

48 Three Steps to the Cross - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

When it comes to God, man naturally concludes that God exists (Romans 1:18-23). However, many suppress this truth. They cover it up with their emotions, pain, and intellect. The truth is rejected by their heart before it is covered up by their mind. Therefore, your role is to help them uncover a truth that was once there. Academia may help some to recover this truth, and there is certainly a time and place for it. The place, though, is not likely to be in your living room or office. This level of academia is probably not what your neighbor needs. He just needs a simple good reason to reconsider a truth about God he once believed. Here is how I do it.

The most virtuous in this world are not too virtuous to need God's grace - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Even the best of deeds can be self-serving, and we all need that grace of God to enter His presence. The most virtuous in this world are not too virtuous to need God's grace, and no one is so virtuous as to reserve the right to be the sole definer of goodness. That is God's prerogative. Claiming complete innocence in the eyes of God is unjustifiable.
