JP Moreland's Web » Update on My Health and New Books Released!

Regarding my health, there is much to say. My prostate was removed in August, 2015, but some cancer was missed, so I just finished 38 radiation treatments and am on Lupron injections every three months (it blocks Testosterone and gives me hot flashes!). In 6 months I’ll have blood work drawn and I’ll know whether or not I still have the cancer. The good news is that it is slow growing, so at 70, even if it is still there, I’d have 10-15 years to live if we did nothing further. Regarding my colon cancer, I am now at the 2-year mark. Every 6 months I’ve had a PET/CAT scan and an endoscopy/colonoscopy, and all have been clear, so in a month, I am having surgery to remove the chemo-port in my chest. I have 3 years to go to be declared in remission, but the 2-year mark is a big one. I have a rare disease (Lynch Muir-Torre Syndrome) that is what caused me to get colon cancer and it also causes cancerous lesions to grown on my skin. They can metastasize, so I get checked every 2 months by a dermatologist. My pacemaker is working well and keeping my resting post at 60 (it was around 45 and I had no energy). I have the beginning signs of atrial flutter returning (I had surgery to get rid of it), but if it does, the surgery is not bad, and they can get rid of it again. Pray for my liver readings. I have non-alcoholic fatty liver, and my readings are really high. I have lost 10 pounds and hope to lose 5 more. In sum, it’s been an interesting 3 years, but to be honest, I’ve never been closer to Jesus nor had so much day-to-day peace and joy.

How Sufficient Was Jesus’ Satisfaction?

Such a statement is also a classic place to consider the sufficiency of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. Some claim that the mere mention of texts such as John 1:29 or John 3:16 defeat Reformed theology, as if to say, “You see, Jesus died for everyone.” One book even has an image of a balance, with “John Calvin” on the high side and “John 3:16” weighing down the other. 1 But as we’ve seen already , this is overly simplistic. Unless one believes in universally effectual salvation, everyone limits the effectiveness of Jesus’ death. We have to ask, in what sense does Jesus take away the sins of the world? Texts such as John 1:29 have been understood throughout the history of the church to express the sufficiency of Jesus’ satisfaction of God’s infinite justice on the cross.

Reality Check: Has Science Explained the Origin of Life? | Evolution News

Science has only one testable, reproducible, and verifiable option on the table that can produce significant levels of functional information: intelligent minds. You can test this yourself by sitting down with a piece of paper and writing a short, meaningful paragraph. If you can pull off this feat, then you have just demonstrated that intelligent design can produce significant levels of useful information. Evidence of what intelligent design can do is all around us, from the smartphone in your pocket, to the jets you fly in, to the podcasts you listen to.

Do Greek Gospels Mean Weak Gospels?

Recently, while on a trip across the country, I was reading a book that repeated a common argument against the gospels being eyewitness accounts.  Here’s the basic argument:  There’s no way that the gospels were written by people who were actually with Jesus.  In particular, the books of Matthew and John could not have been written by any of Jesus’ disciples.  Why?  Because Jesus and his disciples spoke Aramaic, yet the earliest existing copies of the gospels were written in Greek…and good Greek at that.  There’s just no way that these semi-literate people from the backwater of Judea could have written these books in Greek.

Why I'm A Christian Evidentialist | Cold Case Christianity

Last weekend as I taught the first Cold-Case Christianity class at Biola University as part of their Master’s Degree program in Christian Apologetics , the issue of evidentialism was raised by one of the students. Christian apologists are sometimes divided between presuppositionalists (who presuppose the Bible is Divine revelation) and evidentialists (who seek to establish the authority and reliability from internal and external evidences). I am an evidentialist. Most people I meet assume I take this approach because of my background as a detective , but while my investigative experience definitely plays a role in my perspective as a Christian, my family structure is the real reason I’m a committed evidentialist. I was raised in a family dominated by atheists and Mormons. My chief role model, my father, has always been a non-believer; his wife of the past forty-five years has been a committed Mormon. My six half-brothers and half-sisters were all raised as Mormons, and when one of them saw my growing interest in studying the Bible critically, she encouraged me to take a similar look at the Book of Mormon.

Was Jesus Buried for Three Days?

For more resources visit: http://www.reasonablefaith.org The week following Easter in 2015, Dr Craig flew to Dallas, Texas, where he spoke in a downtown bar for the Bible and Beer Consortium. This ministry holds outreach events in this large, dark Dallas bar on a regular basis. Apparently, the bar is only too happy to do so because of the large crowds the events attract. There were several hundred who came out to hear Dr Craig give a talk on the resurrection of Jesus as an event of history. It was a delightful time defending the heart of the Gospel, and Dr Craig really liked the way the BBC is taking the Gospel to where the people really are. The Historical Reliability of Mark's Gospel

It is impossible to prove that an ancient account is fully reliable, and the very fact that Mark’s Gospel records miracles is enough for some people to reject it as a reliable record. However, provided one is prepared to be open minded about the possibility of miracles, there are a number of arguments that, I believe, combine to indicate the historical reliability of Mark’s Gospel.

Is Christianity an 'Exclusive' Religion?

A few days ago my wife and I spoke with a Buddhist man who said that Christianity was a bigoted, intolerant religion. His rationale for making such a statement was grounded (so he said) in the fact that Buddhism had a canopy which embraced all religious truth equally. Christianity was ‘bigoted’ because it did not place equal value on each spiritual or philosophical assertion- even if the competing claims were mutually exclusive. The technical word for his view is ‘religious pluralism.’ In other words, to assert one belief system to be true and another false constitutes intolerance. This conception of intolerance has become widely accepted in western culture.

The Secret Benefit of Fasting

The key difference is Christian purpose. We could say Spiritual purpose — with a capital S for the Holy Spirit. Not just spiritual as opposed to material, but Spiritual as opposed to natural. For Christians, an essential, irreducible aspect of Christian fasting is a Christian purpose. Whether it’s strengthening earnest prayer (Ezra 8:23; Joel 2:12; Acts 13:3). Or seeking God’s guidance (Judges 20:26; Acts 14:23) or his deliverance or protection (2 Chronicles 20:3–4; Ezra 8:21–23). Or humbling ourselves before him (1 Kings 21:27–29; Psalm 35:13). Or expressing repentance (1 Samuel 7:6; Jonah 3:5–8) or grief (1 Samuel 31:13; 2 Samuel 1:11–12) or concern for his work (Nehemiah 1:3–4; Daniel 9:3). Or overcoming temptation and dedicating ourselves to him (Matthew 4:1–11). Or best of all, expressing love and devotion to him (Luke 2:37), and saying with our fast, “This much, O God, I want more of you.”

Galileo and the Catholic Church

In our modern era, it is widely believed that we have developed to a stage where what is actually true or false dictates what is considered knowledge. We believe we are no longer at the mercy of any bureaucracy or human institution to gain knowledge. In the 17th century, the Bible was the dominant source of knowledge about reality. What we have seen in this paper is that Galileo was tried not for rejecting the Bible but for challenging the Church’s sole authority to interpret the Bible. Today, the Church (Protestant and Catholic) has been eclipsed by science as the preeminent (or perhaps only) source of knowledge for mankind. In reality, however, the Church and institutional science have merely switched roles over the last 350 years. Today, the fields of science that attempt to explain the origins and development of life are trapped in a dogmatic devotion to an idea imagined over 150 years ago. Despite an overwhelming body of evidence to the contrary, neo-Darwinism is adhered to dogmatically as the only explanation for the development of life. As discussed in the film Expelled and numerous intelligent design blogs, advocating dangerous ideas that contradict the reigning consensus is punished, not with torture or imprisonment, rather the destruction of academic careers.

Rethinking Our Apologetics: Does Atheism Take More Faith?

This is a rhetoric that many apologists use when confronting atheists. The idea is that since the atheist lacks evidence for his position, he needs more faith to make up the difference. But I think this portrays faith in a confusing and unhelpful way for three reasons.

When Truth Gets Left Behind - Christian Research Institute

What would we think if a Christian book –– or, better yet, a series of Christian books –– would dominate the New York Times bestseller lists over the course of a half dozen years? Let’s further suppose these books would be uncompromising, no-holds-barred advocates of the Bible, politically incorrect when it came to resisting the contemporary demand for moral and religious “tolerance,” insisting on biblical morality, and espousing Christ as the only way to salvation. What if these books had broken out of the Christian ghetto and could be found in every Barnes & Noble bookstore, in every newsstand, and with every secular book dealer? What would we think if these books sold millions of copies in a culture that has become so secularized as to seem openly hostile to Christianity? What if this culture bought 20 million? We might think it was the end of the world!

The Moral Question Behind Infinity War

In  Infinity War , Captain America says, “We don’t trade lives.” He refused to have Vision's life exchanged for others. Yet there came a point in which taking a life (at the person's request and permission) was the only apparent option to save the lives of others. Scarlett Witch destroyed the mind stone, at the request of Vision, which ended his life (even though Thanos turns back time and brings him back temporarily before killing him). And Star-Lord tried to fulfill his promise to Gamora to kill her when she was in the hands of Thanos (even though Thanos turned his laser into bubbles and later killed Gamora himself).

FOMO

FOMO is all of those things on steroids. When I was a kid, I used to look across the street and imagine the wonderful things the rich kid’s family in my neighborhood was doing. But now we don’t have to imagine; we can see it all in real time on social media. FOMO can strike every time a neighbor or friend posts pictures of their amazing vacation, the really cool birthday party they had (to which I wasn’t invited), and more. If I’m not reasonably secure and happy myself, looking at all those posts with their pics of the happiness, bliss, and just plain awesomeness of everyone else’s life can make me anxious, insecure, and unhappy.

Now, I had never claimed Christianity had no evidence, nor did I argue that one should never seek evidence in matters of faith.  Belief without evidence was his assumption.
