Jesus’ Flipping Tables Isn’t an Excuse for Your Online Rants

The irony here is that always smiling and being nice and unfailingly polite aren't actually Christian virtues, they are the thin veneer of a materialistic middle class society which promotes forced silences and grudging cooperation. They are not love, charity, longsuffering, forebearance, etc. They are social programs of control inflicted upon people by various cliques for various purposes, hiding under the guise of Christian virtue. And, yet more ironically, these sorts of theologies and counselings seek to make a sin out of human emotion. Christ never told people anger was sinful. And yet I hear it all the time. This doesn't come from the Bible, this comes from self-help gurus, pop-psychology, and Miss Manners.

God Wants You to Stop Stressing Over Your Circumstances

We are invited to follow David’s example, and redirect our focus by speaking to our own souls. “My soul finds rest in God alone. He alone is my rock and my salvation … He is my fortress, I will never be shaken” (Psalm 62:1). Mind you, David said all this while being chased by Saul’s army. If he can train himself to take refuge in God, can we not?

3 Reasons You Should See Going to Church as a Privilege, Not a Chore

If we have Christ in our hearts, we have spiritual gifts and we see almost every relationship as a gift and an opportunity to use them to give. Church is a joy because it is a great place to give and let Christ’s love flow through us. It could be that when we don’t count it a privilege we might not have a fulfilling personal relationship with Christ. It can also be that a church is quenching the Holy Spirit by closing doors of service of its attenders. I think para-church organizations sometimes meet needs for people who are in such churches.

Why Do Churches Treat Singleness Like a Problem?

Thank you so much for writing this. Not all of this applies to me, but much of it does. I'm 34, single, happy to stay that way, and will be so for the foreseeable future. Churches having such a hard time with singles in ministry is a big concern for me, as I'm pondering if God is calling me to full time ministry, and I know my martial status could very well be a road block to that. A friend of mine was turned down for multiple youth pastor positions because he wasn't married. He did find a gig in the end, and did get married after taking a position, but I'm seriously concerned that I'm going to find myself beating my head against the same wall.

You are as happy that they did it as if you had done it yourself—because you are just so happy to see it.

6 Things Holding You Back From Making a Difference

"Making a difference" is not an unselfish act. If you elevate the lives of others, then you have just elevated the social infrastructure; within which, you prefer to live. This is an 'enlightened self-interest'. "Comfort" is a variable threshold for uncertainty or cognitive dissonance; interdependent among evolving skills of exploration. Therein arises the synergistic self or "yourself" and it's dynamic functional empowerment. But we are all restricted by the laws of physics; in & around us. We are social animals and are psychologically programmed by this parameter of survival. This is why culture lags technological ephemeralization--to allow for integration. Reflectively, Monetary exchange--now unnecessary, is the structural violence of leveraging each other against relative control over resources. Hence, you have your resulting mentality of "entitlement" or narrow self-interest; perpetuated by this neurotic culture of acquisition and hoarding. "Apathy" and "time" are both the editing of relevance; based on the relative acuity of the aforementioned narrow perspective. But this level of autonomy is the collective momentum of skills we develop by sequential experiences.

Science: Being With Friends Is More Powerful Than Morphine

One theory, known as 'the brain opioid theory of social attachment', is that social interactions trigger positive emotions when endorphin binds to opioid receptors in the brain. This gives us that feel-good factor that we get from seeing our friends.

Only One-Third of Pastors Share 'Left Behind' End Times Theology

The phone survey of Protestant pastors was conducted Jan. 8-22, 2016. These questions were sponsored by Charisma House Book Group. The calling list was a random sample stratified by church size drawn from a list of all Protestant churches. Each interview was conducted with the senior pastor, minister or priest of the church called. Responses were weighted by region to more accurately reflect the population. The completed sample is 1,000 surveys. The sample provides 95 percent confidence that the sampling error does not exceed plus or minus 3.1 percent. Margins of error are higher in sub-groups. The full survey report is available at

How Writing Can Be a Spiritual Discipline

As writers, we lasso meaning, shape it into something beautiful, and offer it to the world. The key, for me, is not to get hung up in whether or not I’m writing about faith. 2 Corinthians 2:15 says we’re the aroma of Christ. Because the Holy Spirit lives in us, we exude God’s character. Even if I don’t name drop Jesus in my article, the message of hope I capture relays a dimension of who God is—His love, His power, His sovereignty, His goodness. And when I say “yes” to God’s design for my life by living creatively, I give others permission to do the same. What does the world need more than a band of free men and women living true to their callings?

Christianity's Five Most Countercultural Virtues

Faith doesn’t mean there’s an absence of doubt, mystery, or complexity, but it allows you to have confidence in something—a relationship with someone. To invest your trust and hope in any one thing is notable enough, but to have faith in an unseen, unquantifiable, supernatural God is one of the most countercultural acts imaginable.

America Needs #NeverTrump Now More than Ever

But we can start cleaning them now — with humility and resolve. The first step is to back Ted Cruz to the bitter end. Of course he’s not a perfect vehicle for the conservative movement; in many ways his own rhetoric has contributed to the present crisis. But there is a quantum difference between an informed, committed, and passionate conservative — whatever his faults — and a deceitful, Machiavellian liberal. Cruz is down to his Hail Mary pass, and conservatives should do all they can to help him succeed.

The Data Don’t Lie: Couples That Pray Together Actually Do Stay Together

The academy is pretty divided, ideologically speaking. Most scholars, particularly in sociology, have a more progressive and often more secular perspective on the world than do ordinary Americans. There are few opportunities for scholars who don’t share the same ideological commitment to engage in a meaningful way. Despite our differences, Wolfinger and I share a commitment to the truth and to trying to understand what’s happening in the data. For people who are skeptical of our empirical claims about marriage and church, it’s important to underline the fact that a progressive was also doing the statistics.

Did the Early Christians Get the Jesus Story Wrong?

Prior installments in this series include  Forged in 2011 [ review ], Jesus, Interrupted in 2009 [ review ], God’s Problem in 2007, and Misquoting Jesus in 2005. Each of these books, though different in specific topic, tells the same overall story: Ehrman, once an evangelical who attended Moody Bible Institute and Wheaton College, has now discovered, along with the consensus of modern scholarship, that the New Testament—and the Gospels in particular—don’t provide a trustworthy account of the historical Jesus. Instead, what we have are books that are forgeries, contain contradictions, have morally questionable teachings, and have been edited and changed through the centuries.

Whether or not you get married, if you’re a woman, you need men in your life. If you’re a man, you need women in your life. Why? Because nobody holds the full image of God. Women get part of it, men get part of it, and we need each other. God wired it this way. God thought up gender. God thought up sex. And God thought up marriage. What a God!

Let's Agree to Disagree

In my estimation, serious false doctrine is often promoted in Christian circles under the pretense of "asking questions" and "having conversations." As I said, there is nothing wrong with genuine questions and conversations. Yet certain questions reveal that the questioner already presupposes the answer to his own question. For example, consider Bell's classic question, "Would a loving God really send people to suffer for eternity?" Embedded within this question are certain assumptions about God and what it means for Him to be loving, and by extension also assumptions about the human condition and our relationship to God. The way the question is worded reveals its own answer. Love Wins was an attempt by Bell to justify his assumptions about God, not to honestly wrestle with Scripture and strive to submit himself to it.

25 Some Heroes Just Invented a Pizza Box Made Out of Pizza

The pizza box is one of those simple items that everyone is always trying to improve, without really making a improvements. Sure, a little spot for dipping sauce is nice; that tiny white stool that prevents the top from messing up the cheese is kind of handy; those insulated bags that carry several boxes do keep the pizza somewhat hot. But really, no one has revolutionized the pizza box. Until now. Finally, Vinnie’s Pizzeria in Brooklyn is disrupting the pizza box game.

26 The Briefing 05-02-16 –

Now from a Christian worldview perspective it is hard to overestimate what this represents in two different ways. In the first sense, directly, when it comes to requiring women to register for the draft and then on the basis of that draft, were it to be reinstated, to be deployed just as young men in combat positions. One of the things we saw when the Obama Administration announced the change that all combat positions would be open to women is that we are now in a secular society that seems to have lost not only its sanity, but also to have lost any ability to make a moral argument against women serving in combat. Successive generations of feminist ideology and political correctness have rendered even Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives, at least some of them in this case, the crucial margin for passing this bill in the House Armed Services Committee, from recognizing or making or having the courage to stand by an argument that in some sense men and women are different, and that in any sense it is morally wrong to put women in combat positions. But we need to note how this particular discussion has shifted in a matter of weeks and months.

Can People of Color Really Make Themselves at Home?

InterVarsity was like a house with all sorts of staff living in it. Most of the white staff felt like they owned the house. They felt free to move the furniture, decorate the walls, put their feet up, and cook the foods they liked to eat. But others on our team, though they “lived” in the house, were just guests. As a guest, it’s impolite to move the furniture or criticize the decor, and if you don’t like the food served, you don’t complain—because if you complain, you’re not invited back.

28 Light at Conception

The lead to a recent article in the U.K.’s Telegraph newspaper sums up a remarkable discovery by researchers at Northwestern University near Chicago: “Human life begins in bright flash of light as a sperm meets an egg, scientists have shown for the first time, after capturing the astonishing ‘fireworks’ on film. An explosion of tiny sparks erupts from the egg at the exact moment of conception.”

7 Sure Signs America Has Declared War on Our Faith | The Stream

“Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof…” Live and let live, do not restrict the rights of others. The so called “Christian” majority that has tried to force their beliefs on others through our Government are now claiming to be victims because lately they are not the special protected group any longer. If you want to practice a religion, great, have at it hoss. If you try and force others to adhere to your beliefs through laws created on your beliefs, I will fight you tooth and nail. If this is what the author is talking about they are right, myself and many other people are waging a war against intolerant, self serving, religious zealots who think their religion is the law of the land. I have seen first hand what happens when religion takes over a Government. Just ask normal average citizens in countries like Iran and Saudi Arabia how religion based Government is working out for them. To recognize a core belief of the religion in question, “get off the cross, we need the wood”.

( - In the six months that have passed since then-retiring House Speaker John Boehner and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell cut a budget deal with President Barack Obama that suspended the legal limit on the federal debt until March 15, 2017, the federal debt has increased by more than $1 trillion.

7 Books That Will Help You Care for the Poor

My curious nature and appetite for reading led me to a career in journalism, and then public relations and international development. Along the way, I realized that if I wanted to do my job well—or just do life well, really—I needed to keep reading and learning. While we all may have an idea of what we think helping the poor should look like, often those ideas are in fact harmful to the very people we’re trying to help. (Google “whites in shining armor” or take two minutes to look at the latest viral sensation on Instagram— Barbie Savior —to see what I mean).

Youth Ministry Feeds the Church and the Family

We’re born into a family; we’re adopted into the church. The family is an earthly metaphor for the eternal family of God we know as the church. Adoption and membership in the church isn’t genetic but only comes through saving faith in the gospel. Some discussions regarding the “dropout rate” among churched teens sometimes forget a “churched teen” may never have been converted. The dropout rate may accurately track church attendance, then, but not teens’ standing before God.

Why It’s Foolish to Underestimate the Gift of Faith

The fact is, without the gift of faith the mission simply can’t get done. The whole purpose of spiritual gifts is love for God and power for mission, so the gift of faith is mission-critical. The missionary hoping to break into a closed community in a foreign country must exercise the gift of faith. The church planter asking God to create a healthy, thriving church where none was before must exercise the gift of faith. The college minister looking to launch a new student movement on campus must exercise the gift of faith. Attempting to go to battle without this gift is, I fear, like a special ops team trying to take the hill without weapons. It might be possible, but it’ll be far more brutal and bloody than it otherwise would’ve been, had the right weapons been deployed.

Beyond Bono and Eugene Peterson: The Most Searched and Shared Psalms

“I would love if this conversation would inspire people who are writing these beautiful gospel songs to write a song about their bad marriage, write a song about how they’re pissed off at the government. Because that’s what God wants from you—that truth,” Bono said. “That truthfulness … will blow things apart. Why I’m suspicious about Christians is because of this lack of realism, and I’d love to see more of that in art, and in life, and in music.”

4 Problems with Free-Spirit Theology

Why reintroduce this long-forgotten, little-known French mystic? Because the same ideas that got her labeled a heretic are alive and well in the twenty-first-century church. Let me mention four problems with her free-spirit theology that seem particularly relevant to our situation today.

Does Unfriending Someone Close to Me Mean I'm a Bad Person?

If the person is a friend, a real friend, and you’re just kind of annoyed by the stuff they post (not hard in this political season), I’d still end the social media connection and focus on the real friendship. Sometimes—and this is another article for another day—people who are great in person are not so great on the Internet. To that end, I’d always, always, err on that which is real. Things like eye contact, a shared meal, laughing. These are the things that make a friend a friend. If they’re bugging you on social media, remove that distraction from your friendship.

Oklahoma Police Seized $53,000 From a Christian Band Raising Money for an Orphanage

"This sort of thing is happening all the time," Dan Alban, a lawyer with the institute, told WashPo . But what is unique, according to Alban, is the back story "that [the band was] raising all this money for charity, getting a few thousand bucks here and there. Months on the road and then all their money is taken away because Eh Wah's car has a broken tail light in Muskogee County." The county district attorney reportedly looked at the case and determined that Muskogee County couldn't "meet the burden of proof." And the county is mailing a check for the money taken from Eh Wah soon.

Dostoevsky vs. Superman

Crime and Punishment is rightly hailed for its psychological depth and realism, but it has another claim to fame that makes it required reading, especially for Christians concerned about moral relativism’s devastating effects on the modern world. Just as Alfred Lord Tennyson, in his epic poem  In Memoriam  (published in 1850 but written mostly in the 1830s), wrestled with the implications of Darwinian natural selection more than a decade prior to the publication of  The Origin of Species  (1859), so Dostoevsky, in  Crime and Punishment , exposed the dangers and delusions of Nietzsche’s theory of the übermensch more than 20 years before Nietzsche introduced that figure to the world in  Thus Spake Zarathustra  (1883).

Will Ben Carson's Bible Advice to Donald Trump Work? Here’s What Americans Think

Former presidential candidate Ben Carson recently told reporter Rita Cosby that his advice to Republican frontrunner Donald Trump on handling his temper was to “read the Bible and pray and learn how to put yourself in other peoples’ shoes.” (Trump recently said his favorite Bible verse is “ an eye for an eye .”)

7 Sure Signs That America Has Declared War on Our Faith

According to Jeremy Tedesco, Senior Counsel with the Alliance Defending Freedom, "We asked the Colorado Supreme Court to take this case to ensure that government understands that its duty is to protect the people's freedom to follow their beliefs personally and professionally, not force them to violate those beliefs as the price of earning a living. Jack, who has happily served people of all backgrounds for years, simply exercised the long-cherished American freedom to decline to use his artistic talents to promote a message and event with which he disagrees, and that freedom shouldn't be placed in jeopardy for anyone."

6 Qualifications for Elders that Paul Forgot to Mention

5. You must spend at least 60% of your waking hours recruiting for church committees . Donald Trump has never seen negotiation quite like this. You have gaps to fill, and you’ll do whatever it takes. Planned Parenthood under Investigation

Of course, it’s an indictment on our civilization that only the last step is under investigation. But at least it is. Planned Parenthood and purchasers of fetal tissue have insisted for months that the money discussed in the undercover videos was “reimbursement for reasonable costs.” But testimony before the panel reveals that there’s no evidence clinics incurred any cost while harvesting fetal tissue. Third-party procurement technicians covered the costs, right down to shipping and handling. “When income exceeds costs,” writes Mollie Hemingway at The Federalist, “that’s profit.”

48 Corporate Bullying and Hypocrisy, Trends in Christianity Worldwide, and Prison Reform

Prison Reform Getting Traction. Prison reform was a subject near the heart of our namesake, Chuck Colson. It’s encouraging to see that the Republican National Committee (RNC) is finally getting the message. The RNC adopted a resolution in support of reforming the nation's criminal justice laws. There’s been growing bipartisan support for prison reform for the past few years, in part because such conservative leaders as Richard Viguerie have said that the current system is neither just nor in keeping with conservative values. Viguerie, a committed Christian, told me that “as a Christian I’m horrified and as a conservative I’m outraged” at the waste of lives and money in the current criminal justice system. “Prisons are the largest big-government program in the country,” Viguerie said. “If you believe in limited government, you should be concerned about our current system.” The resolution, passed by the RNC and first reported by the Daily Signal, commends “conservative-led states that have adopted policies to reduce their prison populations.” Image courtesy of Stuart Miles at FreeDigitalPhotos.

49 Same-Sex Marriage Is the New Ideal

Continuing on the theme of yesterday’s post : Because our culture values equality, and because we (not believing in intrinsic human value anymore) think sameness is necessary for equality of value to exist, this also explains the anger many have towards the existence of gender roles in marriage. Why despise patriarchy? Because it entails one member of the marriage having a “higher” position than the other. If our value is determined by roles, and one role is deemed more valuable than the other, then the roles by nature are an expression of inequality. Equality can never exist as long as there are differences between “husband” and “wife.”

J.P. Moreland Answers Three Important Questions

J.P. MORELAND : When I started, most people believed in God and historical apologetics, and questions about people who never hear the gospel were front and center. Now, the question of God needs to be defended, issues of science and Christianity, and topics about pluralism and relativism regarding worldviews and religions are important. Also, people don’t believe in truth, so that needs to be defended and clarified.
