Is the Bible Full of Contradictions? | Stand to Reason

I’ve devoted the last few months to answering this question. What I have discovered is that many alleged contradictions arise because an unfair standard, or false expectation, is applied to the Bible. Most modern readers just assume that the biblical authors wrote like we do today in the twenty-first century. Consequently, they end up applying a twenty-first century standard to an ancient document. This is a gross mistake. In fact, most claims of Bible contradictions stem from the reader misunderstanding, and even misrepresenting, the author’s intent . The alleged contradictions stem from the reader, not the author.

3 Ways the Gospel Changes Apologetics

Taken in isolation, Peter’s exhortation to be ready to give an answer seem to give warrant to various manners in which to do apologetics. Today, the general sense of some apologists is that giving an answer becomes more about winning arguments and demolishing ideas antithetical to the gospel. Granted, Paul states in 2 Corinthians 10:5-6 that we are to demolish everything raised against the truth of God and to take captive every thought in obedience to Christ. However, the manner in which we do apologetics is not left to our own discretion.

Four Truths about the New Testament Every Christian Should Know

People love diversity. When it comes to music, cuisine, clothing styles, or any other aspect of culture, variety can be a beautiful thing. When it comes to the background of the New Testament canon, however, the belief in diversity is very nearly an assault on the deity of Christ and questioning the teachings of the New Testament. Diversity allows people to create the Jesus of their choosing—and reject the Jesus of Scripture.

What About All Those Evil Christians? (Podcast) | Cold Case Christianity

In this blast from the past, J. Warner examines the challenge offered by skeptics who claim that occasional evil behavior on the part of Christians invalidates Christianity. If Christianity is true and virtuous, how can someone like Adolph Hitler call himself a “Christian”? How can there be so many radical Christian militia groups? Do people like Hitler and groups like these demonstrate that Christianity is just another mistaken worldview? J. Warner answers these questions and listener email related to the supernatural nature of the Bible and archaeological evidence for the Exodus.

We should then plausibly view viruses as among the most information-rich natural systems in the known Universe (Fig. 4). Their size dictates they are very small targets minimizing the probability of destruction by flash heating or ionizing radiation, Hoyle and Wickramasinghe (1979) e.g. Chapter 1. Their nanometer dimensions plausibly allow easy transport and dispersal by micrometer sized dust grains and other protective physical matrices of similar size. They are then nanoparticle-sized genetic vectors which contain all the essential information to take over and drive the physiology of any given target cell within which they mesh. Their replicative growth means they are produced, and exist, in huge numbers on cosmic scales; so that they (and to a lesser quantitative extent their cellular reservoirs) can suffer huge losses by inactivation while still leaving a residue of millions of surviving particles potentially still infective. A virus then is a type of compressed module in touch with the whole of the cell’s very ability to grow and divide to produce progeny cells and thus to evolve.

8 The Devil Can Do Exposition: Two Essential Ingredients for Preaching

The kind of speech appropriate for the gathered church in worship is unique. There is no other gathering like this in the world: a people of God’s own possession (1 Peter 2:9), chosen before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4), destined to be like the Son of God (Romans 8:29), bought with divine blood (Acts 20:28), acquitted and accepted before the court of heaven (Romans 5:1; 15:16), a new creation on the earth (2 Corinthians 5:17), indwelt by the Creator of the universe (1 Corinthians 6:19), sanctified by the body of Jesus (Hebrews 10:10), called to eternal glory (1 Peter 5:10), heirs of the world (Romans 4:13; 1 Corinthians 3:21–23), destined to rule with Christ (Revelation 3:21) and judge angels (1 Corinthians 6:3). Never has there been a gathering like this. It is incomparable on the earth.

Objective Morality: Much Ado About Nothing?

Imagine the confusion this created, as the storms dissipated in some areas, and continued in others! Parents and students wondered exactly when school would start. Instead of providing a definite starting time for county students, the officials based the starting time on, at a minimum, two variable factors: the weather conditions at the student’s home, and each person’s idea of what it means for a storm to be “over”. This, of course, varies widely; In my opinion, a storm is “over” when it no longer poses a serious threat of damage. My aunt, who was terrified of storms, would insist that a storm isn’t “over” until the sky is clear for at least an hour!

The Poached Egg is Trending at GiveSendGo!

Some of you might be wondering, “Why do you need $15,000? That seems like a lot to run a website.” Well, you would be right, $15k is a lot to ask, but here’s what $15k is for. For the past several years I’ve been paid a modest salary with our partner, Ratio Christi, with donations I’ve raised through the website going toward that salary. Now that I’ve made the difficult decision to leave RC, that salary will no longer be available to me. The $15k I hope to raise will sustain me financially for roughly six months, while I keep TPE going and seek more permanent funding. Running TPE is a full time job, and I’m working hard on making it even better with a complete redesign and reboot on another platform. The new site will be better than ever and more functional and accessible to everyone, which I hope will lead to expanding its reach. Can you please take a moment to visit my GiveSendGo campaign page (here) ? There you can read my short testimony and why I started TPE. While you’re there I hope you will prayerfully consider helping to keep the momentum of the campaign going by making a contribution of any amount.

Are Wisdom Teeth Evidence for Evolution?

In conclusion, it has been shown that preindustrial (and some modern) populations with a more primitive diet did have functional wisdom teeth and that a processed regimen of food and the lessening of chewing forces is largely responsible for the decrease in attrition and reduction of jaw size. The dental system is thus designed to endure heavy use with the most abrasive of foods, which a God full of love, foresight, and careful provision for his creatures would have logically incorporated into their design. Health-care providers should take every precaution to protect these teeth and avoid taking the approach that they are universally harmful and useless. Wisdom teeth are sturdy, practical structures with a specific and useful purpose. That impaction/disorders are increasingly frequent in today’s world implies nothing about the supposed evolution of humans from primates or a supposed poor design. Wisdom teeth are certainly not vestigial organs. You would be wise to have that idea extracted from your head.

Atheists: Thor is not a Rational Substitute for God

Yesterday, I responded to a common atheist claim that one cannot prove a universal negative. But can one really prove that something does not exist, especially when that thing is mystical or other-worldly? For example, one atheist responded to the idea that a personal God was the best explanation for the beginning of the universe with "I think Thor is the best explanation. My claim isn't falsifiable." He seems to think that by invoking the name of a Norse god instead of the Christian God he has made an equally valid claim, but he hasn't. Of course the claim that Thor is responsible for the creation of the universe is falsifiable. Let's see how.

19 Time Cannot Forgive Our Sin

God does not sweep sin under the rug with the broom of time. Our past sins have mouths, eyes, and legs. Though we try and silence our consciences, reminding them that it was last week, last month, last decade (besides, look how much we’ve reformed!), God’s anger towards our sin knows no remission or expiration date. Sin doesn’t rust or decompose before him. Time may seem to heal a human heart, but it does not remedy an offense against the divine. Just because we banish our sins from before our own eyes, they still stand in full view of his.

Unbelievable? Is There Enough Evidence Beyond the Gospels to Make Their Testimony Reliable? | Cold Case Christianity

During an interview on Unbelievable? with Justin Brierley , a caller asked about corroboration and wanted to know if there was enough evidence beyond the Gospels to verify the reliability of their testimony. I began by helping him understand the nature of evidential corroboration and the limited information typically offered by such evidence. Every piece of corroborative evidence typically addresses (and verifies) only a “touchpoint”, a small aspect of the testimony from which we infer the “reasonability” of the larger account. Corroborative evidence is always limited ; it only addresses a small aspect of the event under consideration. Even with these limits, however, the Gospels are still well corroborated. I’ve written a chapter about this in my book, Cold-Case Christianity , but here is a brief summary of the evidence “beyond the Gospels”:

Jesus: Logician and Lord

Dallas Willard once said, “There is in our culture an uneasy relation between Jesus and intelligence.”[1] What Willard meant is that there are many things we, as Christians, think of when we think of Jesus, but His smartness and intelligence are not often among those things. It’s true that most of us will affirm Jesus’ divine omniscience, but we do not seem to think of Him as generally a brilliant thinker. That is, when we think of the world’s great philosophers and thinkers, Jesus doesn’t often make the list. Or when we read through the Great Books, we read Plato, Aristotle, Cicero, and often blow right past Jesus and perhaps pick up with Plutarch to Athanasius and Augustine. We rarely read the teachings of Jesus as a great and influential work of intellectual history.

An Open Letter to Graduates: Part 2

Eating poorly, lack of exercise, and lack of sleep will catch up to you. Every spring many of my students graduate and get ready for college. But every year some of them are back home by December having already dropped out. Why? One consistent reason is they simply don’t take care of their health. Depression is rampant in the university. Forty-six percent of college students said they felt hopeless at least once in the past year. While there can be many reasons for this, one prime reason is that students simply do not know how to take care of their health. The only way to do this is to determine ahead of time, like Daniel, that you are going to exercise, get good sleep, and make wise choices with what you eat. Like Daniel, have you purposed in your heart to be healthy?

Transgender Identity—Wishing Away God’s Design

Third, we should recommit ourselves to training our children. The bodily differences between men and women are real. They speak to differences in our makeup, specifically designed by our Creator. In practical form, we must teach these differences to our children. They must see that being a boy or a girl is a matter of God’s glory. There should be no shame in boys liking boyish things or in girls adopting girlish behaviors. Christians should encourage this kind of awareness. Many parents will find that their children genuinely enjoy being a boy or a girl, a future man or a future woman. We should regularly remind our kids that it was God who made them as they are. We should encourage them to embrace and assume manhood or womanhood.

Are Questions Better Than Answers? No Question About It!

Although it might surprise you, given that I grew up with a famous apologist father , my parents asked me more questions than they gave me answers. My parents did not want me to believe something simply on authority, but because I had good reasons for believing it was true. They certainly wanted me to become a Christian, but they were also deeply interested in helping me learn how to think critically for myself and to confidently arrive at truth.

3 Ways to Help Kids Connect Obedience with Joy

“ Obey ? What does that mean?” The boy I was tutoring stared at me in confusion. I had just been telling him that he should do his homework to obey his dad—until I realized I was using a foreign word. I was stumped. How had this boy gone seven years without hearing the word “obey”? It actually made sense. Many non-Christian homes, including his, omit this word from their vocabulary. They might even shun it altogether. Obedience has baggage, after all. It’s linked to rules, to consequences, and—worst of all—to authority. The word “obey” is out of place in our don’t-tell-me-what-to-do society. But Christians should have a different reaction to the word. For us, obedience means blessing, not baggage. And the ultimate authority who was our Judge is now our Savior. For Christians, obedience means blessing, not baggage. Obedience draws us into all the blessings of being part of God’s covenant family. But obedience goes against our sin nature, so we have to teach our kids  how to find joy in it. Here are three ways to help your kids connect obedience with joy. 1.

27 The Secret to Fighting Anxiety

Now, I still carried this Mastercard, though I never used it. We took it to California on vacation with the family, and I lost it. I had no idea where it was. It could’ve been at the seals show in SeaWorld, or it could have been in a fruit shop in Tijuana, where we had crossed the border to visit Mexico. It could’ve been in who knows how many McDonald’s. It could have been on the beach in Coronado, California — where the sand really is gold and the condos sell for a one-and-a-quarter million dollars. (We were swimming, not shopping.)

Can Atheists Ground the Claim That Abortion Is Wrong?

The Evidence For Jesus' Resurrection, Part 7: Reasoning To The Resurrection

Could the resurrection have been a legend? No. Why? Because, as we saw in part 5 of this blog post series, we can trace the claims of the resurrection to the lips of the original disciples! In Paul’s letters, he says he had access to the original disciples and had fellowshipped with them. I’m sure Peter told Paul whether or not he had seen Jesus when he visited them in Galatians 1 and 2. And of course, the creedal tradition dates to within five years after the death of Jesus (as argued in part 5 of this series, it’s likely he got the creed from Peter and James when he visited them three years after his conversion), this is well within the lifetimes of the twelve disciples who could have corrected this oral tradition if He really hadn’t appeared to them. Moreover, the early church fathers Tertullian and Irenaeus attest that the church fathers Polycarp and Clement were students of the apostle John and that they knew several other apostles as well. This is significant because Polycarp and Clement said that the original disciples were claiming that Jesus rose from the dead and appeared to them.

Loving God with All Our Minds

We are intellectual beings. Jesus tells us that we are to pursue God with the deepest parts of who we are, including our intellect. Jesus lived this out. If He is the Lord of our lives, this should mean patterning our lives after His in all ways. Thus, being intellectual about our faith and loving God accordingly is simply part of our discipleship

#291 – Trust During Trials (Genesis 40:8)

So this is something calls scripture calls us to do. Let’s pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters right now. God, we trust in you. We trust that you are working all things together for the good of those who love you and to your purpose. Oh God, we pray right now for our brothers and sisters who are in prison right now for their faith. We pray for our brothers and sisters who boldly have shared the gospel and it has landed them in captivity, in darkness, like physical darkness right now and physical pain, physical confinement, physical isolation. God, they’re separated from family, they’re separated from friends. God, we pray for their family members, we pray for their friends, for their church, family. God, we pray that you’d strengthen them, God, that they would not shrink back from trusting in you and proclaiming you as they know the cost in even greater ways right now as their mom or dad or husband or wife or child is in prison because of the gospel. In God we pray we for that brother or sister in prison. God, we pray that you would help them to trust in you.

What Dietrich Bonhoeffer Preached On Memorial Day

“Our situation would be truly desperate,” Bonhoeffer said, “if not for the word of Christ: When all of this comes over, see that you are not alarmed.” Bonhoeffer then recalled various times in Scripture when we are commanded to “Be not afraid.” The crescendo of his sermon is the message that makes the church’s proclamation utterly different than the world’s:

Britain’s Tommy Robinson Imprisoned in Quickie, Secret Trial, Faces Death in Prison; President Trump Should Offer Political Asylum

This story is a complete misrepresentation of the truth. Robinson was not summarily imprisoned for reporting. First, he was already under suspended sentence for a similar offence last year. That means he was already tried and convicted of contempt of court. The sentence was suspended, which means he didn’t have to go to prison UNLESS he did the same thing again. When he reported outside Leeds court this week, he was committing the same sort of offence and the previous sentence became active, meaning he could be imprisoned for the prior conviction. This is basic law, guys. The offence he committed originally, and the offence for which he was arrested this week is breach of the peace and breaking legal reporting restrictions of sex cases. Basically, to ensure a fair trial, the press isn’t allowed to report on the trial until it is finished. Reporting restrictions are not a conspiracy, they apply to most cases and there is nothing odd going on here. These laws exist so that th jury is not influenced by any outside factors. Having now been imprisoned as per the original conviction, he may now face trial for this new offence, if the courts decide it’s worthwhile.

41 Worship in Spirit and Truth

Yet we’re so prone to identify worship with the externals: how nice (or shabby) the building is, how many are in attendance, how good the music is, how gifted the preacher is, whether someone near us is doing something on their smartphone other than reading a Bible app or taking notes, or whether one of the worship leaders is waving a hand distractingly or doing those odd facial expressions or swaying or even jumping. (There’s something to be said about “undistracting excellence” for those planning and leading worship services, but that’s for another time.)

44 The Danger of Drifting from the Word

Drifting is infinitely dangerous. Oh, that I could waken you all to be joyfully vigilant in living the Christian life of looking to Jesus, and considering Jesus, and listening to Jesus. His yoke is easy and his burden is light — as easy as listening and as light as looking. But if we neglect this great salvation, and drift into the love of other things, then we will not escape. We will perish. The mark of the true child of God is that that he does not drift for long. If you are drifting this morning, one of the signs of hope that you are born again is that you feel pricked for this — a rising desire in your heart to turn your eyes on Jesus and consider him and listen to him in the days and months and years to come. And one of the signs that you may not be born again is that you hear what I am saying and feel no desire to guard against drifting.

What I've Learned in Twenty Years of Marriage - Russell Moore

Twenty-one years ago today, I was waiting in a hallway right next to the baptistery where I was immersed a decade before. Within a few moments, I stood in front of my home church to greet my bride, Maria Hanna, and to pledge to her before God and those witnesses my love and my life. Today, I look back and wonder what all we’ve learned in these twenty-one years together. The main thing is that I’m glad we didn’t wait until we were ready to get married.

47 The Golden Rule in Christian Dating

We won’t have trouble finding an answer (or a dozen answers) to any of our questions in relationships. The scary reality is that we can find an answer somewhere to justify what we want to do — right or wrong, safe or unsafe, wise or unwise. The advice we choose might be from a book by a doctor, or a random conversation with someone at church, or a blog post by a teenager, or just something we found on Pinterest. For many of us, if we’re honest, it really doesn’t matter who’s offering the advice as long as it confirms what we thought or wanted in the first place.

Opiates Are Real, but So Is the Gospel

The opioid crisis in America is real. It is here, and it will be here for a long time. But the gospel is real, and the power of the living God is greater than the power of opiates. Jesus Himself said, concerning the salvation of a man caught up in the idolatry of riches: “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27). Let us pray and work and believe that prodigal sons and daughters can be restored to their families, and that one day they themselves can sing along with you: “You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. You will increase my greatness and comfort me again. . . . My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praise to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed” (Ps. 71:20–21, 23).
