Is the Bible Full of Contradictions? | Stand to Reason

I’ve devoted the last few months to answering this question. What I have discovered is that many alleged contradictions arise because an unfair standard, or false expectation, is applied to the Bible. Most modern readers just assume that the biblical authors wrote like we do today in the twenty-first century. Consequently, they end up applying a twenty-first century standard to an ancient document. This is a gross mistake. In fact, most claims of Bible contradictions stem from the reader misunderstanding, and even misrepresenting, the author’s intent . The alleged contradictions stem from the reader, not the author.

The Poached Egg is Trending at GiveSendGo!

Some of you might be wondering, “Why do you need $15,000? That seems like a lot to run a website.” Well, you would be right, $15k is a lot to ask, but here’s what $15k is for. For the past several years I’ve been paid a modest salary with our partner, Ratio Christi, with donations I’ve raised through the website going toward that salary. Now that I’ve made the difficult decision to leave RC, that salary will no longer be available to me. The $15k I hope to raise will sustain me financially for roughly six months, while I keep TPE going and seek more permanent funding. Running TPE is a full time job, and I’m working hard on making it even better with a complete redesign and reboot on another platform. The new site will be better than ever and more functional and accessible to everyone, which I hope will lead to expanding its reach. Can you please take a moment to visit my GiveSendGo campaign page (here) ? There you can read my short testimony and why I started TPE. While you’re there I hope you will prayerfully consider helping to keep the momentum of the campaign going by making a contribution of any amount.

With New Theory of the Cambrian Explosion, Scientists Reach (Literally) for the Stars | Evolution News

We should then plausibly view viruses as among the most information-rich natural systems in the known Universe (Fig. 4). Their size dictates they are very small targets minimizing the probability of destruction by flash heating or ionizing radiation, Hoyle and Wickramasinghe (1979) e.g. Chapter 1. Their nanometer dimensions plausibly allow easy transport and dispersal by micrometer sized dust grains and other protective physical matrices of similar size. They are then nanoparticle-sized genetic vectors which contain all the essential information to take over and drive the physiology of any given target cell within which they mesh. Their replicative growth means they are produced, and exist, in huge numbers on cosmic scales; so that they (and to a lesser quantitative extent their cellular reservoirs) can suffer huge losses by inactivation while still leaving a residue of millions of surviving particles potentially still infective. A virus then is a type of compressed module in touch with the whole of the cell’s very ability to grow and divide to produce progeny cells and thus to evolve.

9 The Devil Can Do Exposition: Two Essential Ingredients for Preaching

The kind of speech appropriate for the gathered church in worship is unique. There is no other gathering like this in the world: a people of God’s own possession (1 Peter 2:9), chosen before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4), destined to be like the Son of God (Romans 8:29), bought with divine blood (Acts 20:28), acquitted and accepted before the court of heaven (Romans 5:1; 15:16), a new creation on the earth (2 Corinthians 5:17), indwelt by the Creator of the universe (1 Corinthians 6:19), sanctified by the body of Jesus (Hebrews 10:10), called to eternal glory (1 Peter 5:10), heirs of the world (Romans 4:13; 1 Corinthians 3:21–23), destined to rule with Christ (Revelation 3:21) and judge angels (1 Corinthians 6:3). Never has there been a gathering like this. It is incomparable on the earth.

Objective Morality: Much Ado About Nothing?

Imagine the confusion this created, as the storms dissipated in some areas, and continued in others! Parents and students wondered exactly when school would start. Instead of providing a definite starting time for county students, the officials based the starting time on, at a minimum, two variable factors: the weather conditions at the student’s home, and each person’s idea of what it means for a storm to be “over”. This, of course, varies widely; In my opinion, a storm is “over” when it no longer poses a serious threat of damage. My aunt, who was terrified of storms, would insist that a storm isn’t “over” until the sky is clear for at least an hour!

Unbelievable? Is There Enough Evidence Beyond the Gospels to Make Their Testimony Reliable? | Cold Case Christianity

During an interview on Unbelievable? with Justin Brierley , a caller asked about corroboration and wanted to know if there was enough evidence beyond the Gospels to verify the reliability of their testimony. I began by helping him understand the nature of evidential corroboration and the limited information typically offered by such evidence. Every piece of corroborative evidence typically addresses (and verifies) only a “touchpoint”, a small aspect of the testimony from which we infer the “reasonability” of the larger account. Corroborative evidence is always limited ; it only addresses a small aspect of the event under consideration. Even with these limits, however, the Gospels are still well corroborated. I’ve written a chapter about this in my book, Cold-Case Christianity , but here is a brief summary of the evidence “beyond the Gospels”:

An Open Letter to Graduates: Part 2

Eating poorly, lack of exercise, and lack of sleep will catch up to you. Every spring many of my students graduate and get ready for college. But every year some of them are back home by December having already dropped out. Why? One consistent reason is they simply don’t take care of their health. Depression is rampant in the university. Forty-six percent of college students said they felt hopeless at least once in the past year. While there can be many reasons for this, one prime reason is that students simply do not know how to take care of their health. The only way to do this is to determine ahead of time, like Daniel, that you are going to exercise, get good sleep, and make wise choices with what you eat. Like Daniel, have you purposed in your heart to be healthy?

Transgender Identity—Wishing Away God’s Design

Third, we should recommit ourselves to training our children. The bodily differences between men and women are real. They speak to differences in our makeup, specifically designed by our Creator. In practical form, we must teach these differences to our children. They must see that being a boy or a girl is a matter of God’s glory. There should be no shame in boys liking boyish things or in girls adopting girlish behaviors. Christians should encourage this kind of awareness. Many parents will find that their children genuinely enjoy being a boy or a girl, a future man or a future woman. We should regularly remind our kids that it was God who made them as they are. We should encourage them to embrace and assume manhood or womanhood.

Are Questions Better Than Answers? No Question About It!

Although it might surprise you, given that I grew up with a famous apologist father , my parents asked me more questions than they gave me answers. My parents did not want me to believe something simply on authority, but because I had good reasons for believing it was true. They certainly wanted me to become a Christian, but they were also deeply interested in helping me learn how to think critically for myself and to confidently arrive at truth.

3 Ways to Help Kids Connect Obedience with Joy

“ Obey ? What does that mean?” The boy I was tutoring stared at me in confusion. I had just been telling him that he should do his homework to obey his dad—until I realized I was using a foreign word. I was stumped. How had this boy gone seven years without hearing the word “obey”? It actually made sense. Many non-Christian homes, including his, omit this word from their vocabulary. They might even shun it altogether. Obedience has baggage, after all. It’s linked to rules, to consequences, and—worst of all—to authority. The word “obey” is out of place in our don’t-tell-me-what-to-do society. But Christians should have a different reaction to the word. For us, obedience means blessing, not baggage. And the ultimate authority who was our Judge is now our Savior. For Christians, obedience means blessing, not baggage. Obedience draws us into all the blessings of being part of God’s covenant family. But obedience goes against our sin nature, so we have to teach our kids  how to find joy in it. Here are three ways to help your kids connect obedience with joy. 1.

Loving God with All Our Minds

We are intellectual beings. Jesus tells us that we are to pursue God with the deepest parts of who we are, including our intellect. Jesus lived this out. Jesus in Islam - Christian Research Institute

A careful examination of the similarities and differences between the Christian and Muslim views of Jesus reveals three sources of Islamic claims about Jesus. First, many claims can be traced back to orthodox Christian sources (either directly or through written or oral intermediaries). These patches of common ground are excellent places to begin conversations. Second, Islamic stories about Jesus that have no precedent in orthodox Christian sources nevertheless often can be found in apocryphal (sometimes heretical) works from the second through seventh centuries. Since Muhammad’s apparent borrowing from unreliable sources calls his revelations into question, this category is useful for apologists challenging Islam. Third, a variety of details about Jesus that are unique to Islam seem to have been invented to bring Jesus into line with Islamic theology. Here history may be used as a check to Muhammad’s claims.

26 Worship in Spirit and Truth

Yet we’re so prone to identify worship with the externals: how nice (or shabby) the building is, how many are in attendance, how good the music is, how gifted the preacher is, whether someone near us is doing something on their smartphone other than reading a Bible app or taking notes, or whether one of the worship leaders is waving a hand distractingly or doing those odd facial expressions or swaying or even jumping. (There’s something to be said about “undistracting excellence” for those planning and leading worship services, but that’s for another time.)

27 Time Cannot Forgive Our Sin

God does not sweep sin under the rug with the broom of time. Our past sins have mouths, eyes, and legs. Though we try and silence our consciences, reminding them that it was last week, last month, last decade (besides, look how much we’ve reformed!), God’s anger towards our sin knows no remission or expiration date. Sin doesn’t rust or decompose before him. Time may seem to heal a human heart, but it does not remedy an offense against the divine. Just because we banish our sins from before our own eyes, they still stand in full view of his.

Clearing the Fog: 'Christianity Doesn't Need Evidence Because Faith is Blind.'

First, Jesus predicted his resurrection on multiple occasions in the presence of the disciples. Thomas should not have been surprised at the return of Jesus. Second, Thomas heard eyewitness testimony (evidence) from the rest of the disciples and yet still refused to believe. (The vast majority of scientific knowledge we possess depends upon trusting the conclusions of other scientists, which is true for virtually all disciplines.) Third, Jesus did many miracles during his ministry as proof of his identity. In fact, right after the story of Jesus scolding Thomas, John said the miracles of Jesus were recorded “so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name” ( John 20:30-31 )

32 The Danger of Drifting from the Word

Drifting is infinitely dangerous. Oh, that I could waken you all to be joyfully vigilant in living the Christian life of looking to Jesus, and considering Jesus, and listening to Jesus. His yoke is easy and his burden is light — as easy as listening and as light as looking. But if we neglect this great salvation, and drift into the love of other things, then we will not escape. We will perish. The mark of the true child of God is that that he does not drift for long. If you are drifting this morning, one of the signs of hope that you are born again is that you feel pricked for this — a rising desire in your heart to turn your eyes on Jesus and consider him and listen to him in the days and months and years to come. And one of the signs that you may not be born again is that you hear what I am saying and feel no desire to guard against drifting.

What I've Learned in Twenty Years of Marriage - Russell Moore

Twenty-one years ago today, I was waiting in a hallway right next to the baptistery where I was immersed a decade before. Within a few moments, I stood in front of my home church to greet my bride, Maria Hanna, and to pledge to her before God and those witnesses my love and my life. Today, I look back and wonder what all we’ve learned in these twenty-one years together. The main thing is that I’m glad we didn’t wait until we were ready to get married.

36 The Golden Rule in Christian Dating

We won’t have trouble finding an answer (or a dozen answers) to any of our questions in relationships. The scary reality is that we can find an answer somewhere to justify what we want to do — right or wrong, safe or unsafe, wise or unwise. The advice we choose might be from a book by a doctor, or a random conversation with someone at church, or a blog post by a teenager, or just something we found on Pinterest. For many of us, if we’re honest, it really doesn’t matter who’s offering the advice as long as it confirms what we thought or wanted in the first place.

Opiates Are Real, but So Is the Gospel

The opioid crisis in America is real. It is here, and it will be here for a long time. But the gospel is real, and the power of the living God is greater than the power of opiates. Jesus Himself said, concerning the salvation of a man caught up in the idolatry of riches: “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27). Let us pray and work and believe that prodigal sons and daughters can be restored to their families, and that one day they themselves can sing along with you: “You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. You will increase my greatness and comfort me again. . . . My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praise to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed” (Ps. 71:20–21, 23).

44 You Can Believe the Promises of God and Be Lost

Another way to say it would be that in all the acts of saving faith the Holy Spirit enables us not only to perceive and affirm factual truth, but also to apprehend and embrace spiritual beauty. It is the “embracing of spiritual beauty” that is the essential core of saving faith. And this embrace is what will shape our lives most deeply and receive the “well done” at the last day.

45 God’s Design in Detours

In a home for retarded children, Catherine was nurtured twenty years. The child had been [mentally handicapped] from the beginning, and had never spoken a word, but only vegetated. She either gazed quietly at the walls or made distorted movements. To eat, to drink, to sleep, were her whole life. She seemed not to participate at all in what happened around her. A leg had to be amputated. The staff wished Cathy well and hoped that the Lord would soon take her to Himself. One day the doctor called the director to come quickly. Catherine was dying. When both entered the room, they could not believe their senses. Catherine was singing Christian hymns she had heard and had picked up, just those suitable for death beds. She repeated over and over again the German song, “Where does the soul find its fatherland, its rest?” She sang for half an hour with transfigured face, then she passed away quietly. 49 The Devil Is Not in the Details: Fighting Temptation with Specific Truth

But when applied to temptation, diabolical “Impressionism” becomes powerful and terrible. The devil doesn’t employ realism when painting a temptation “because there is no truth in him” (John 8:44). His goal is to use the spiritual equivalents of color, lighting, and less defined lines to evoke certain sinful emotional sensations. The power is in the momentary emotional impression it makes on the “viewer.” The devil doesn’t want us to see the real thing; he just wants us to experience a rather vague impression that yielding to the temptation will bring happiness.
