On Leading the Carl F. H. Henry Institute for Evangelical Engagement

I do hope that folks will profit from the renewed work of the Henry Institute . We’ve got much to do in terms of engaging both the church and the culture with the gospel and the body of ethics and doctrine it produces. For my part, I hope to emulate Henry in some small way by carrying out this mission with humility, gospel passion, and a genuine love for the church and those outside of it. It’s my hope that we can assist and equip congregations to think well and minister more faithfully in our turbulent but exciting times. Henry lived and worked with a sense that the kingdom really and truly would advance despite the encroachment of darkness. I want to do the same, and to encourage others to serve Christ with great confidence and hope.

3 The Lord’s Welcome

Lesson for the Week George Herbert (1593 – 1633) was a contemporary of Shakespeare and of John Donne. You can see both the depth of his faith and his genius for capturing theology in simple terms in the poem above. It’s a conversation between Love, acting as welcoming host, and a reluctant Guest. Love entreats the Guest to enter and share a meal, but the Guest demurs on account of his unworthiness. But Love persists, gently persuading the Guest that his arguments carry no weight—all unworthiness is covered by Love. This is a simple allegory, very pertinent to those of us who can’t bring ourselves to accept Christ’s love. All the biblical passages cited above in one way or another show how Jesus “bade us welcome” despite our unworthiness. Let Him convince you that nothing can keep you from His welcome!

5 First-Century Synagogue Discovered in Magdala - Stand to Reason Blog

But their spades struck history only a little more than a foot below the surface: a stone bench that, it soon became evident, was part of the remains of a synagogue from the first century, one of only seven from the Second Temple period known to exist, and the first to be found in Galilee. A local coin found in a side room of the synagogue was dated from the year 29 — when Jesus is thought to have been alive….

6 EQUIP, Christian Articles, Bible Answer Man | CRI

Is the “binding and loosing” of demons biblical? One of the most common expressions in contemporary Christianity is “I bind you, Satan, in the name of Jesus.” Biblically however, the phrase “binding and loosing” has nothing whatsoever to do with demons. One of the most common expressions in contemporary Christianity is “I bind you, Satan, […]

J.R.R. Tolkien Reveals TRUE Meaning Of 'The Lord Of The Rings' In Unearthed Audio Recording

Over 20 years ago, a lost recording of J.R.R. Tolkien was discovered in a basement in Rotterdam, but the man who found it kept this important reel-to-reel tape hidden away. Until recently, only he had heard the recording. But now, I am one of those lucky Middle-earth lovers who has listened to this magical magnetic tape, and I happily declare that it is awesome. For it proves once and for all that Professor Tolkien was, in fact, very much the hobbit that we all suspected him to be. What's more, we get to hear Tolkien reading a lost poem in the Elven tongue which he translates into English. And to top it off, he states in unambiguous terms (cue Rohirrim war trumpets) the real meaning of The Lord of the Rings !

27-year-old Meriam Yehya Ibrahim was eight months pregnant when she appeared before a court in Khartoum, Sudan’s capital city, in May on charges of 'apostasy' and 'adultery'. When she refused to renounce her Christian faith, the judges sentenced Meriam to death by hanging. Meriam has also been sentenced to 100 lashes for being married to a Christian man.

The Gospel Coalition - Is Your Busy Season Becoming a Lifetime?

From a single woman to a grandmother, different stages of life will certainly mean that Paul's exhortation will be uniquely walked out as we love others, point them to Christ, and serve one another. However, my concern is that in our frantic race for a perfectly lovely and carefully crafted childhood, we opt out and grab the "busy season" card over and over as the years fly by. And our "busy season" turns into a lifetime.

Probe into church sign suggesting non-Christians will 'burn in hell'

The article says the church was forced to remove the poster. If I was them, I would have dug my heels in and been stubborn and refused to remove it, because it is a freedom of speech issue. If they believe this, they should fight for their legal right to stand by their beliefs. As for those who got upset like this silly boy, if he doesn't believe it, then why did he take such offence? Put the poster up and stand by your guns, if the police took it further it would become a national issue and debate on freedom of religion and freedom of speech so the church should have kept it up. We need clergy to be strong, not give in at every challenge which is what the church too often does.

The Gospel Coalition - 5 Ways to Bless Your Workplace

2. Take risks. I realize this point somewhat contradicts the last one, but the Christian life rests in that tension between risk and prudence. Take steps in work friendships to bring up Jesus. I am a relational evangelist, meaning I like to establish some type of friendship and then bring up Jesus. I am rarely the “can I tell you about Jesus?” guy. My temptation is to never actually bring up Jesus, or to do so in softened ways. Risk a friendship, risk a promotion, risk not “fitting in,” or maybe even risk your job if God would call you to that sacrifice. Of course, we don’t want to be reckless just for the sake of being reckless.

What’s So Hard About Leading a Church?

“Being a pastor is like death by a thousand paper cuts,” says Rev. Dr. Ken Fong, senior pastor at Evergreen Baptist Church in Rosemead, California and a program director at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. “You’re scrutinized and criticized from top to bottom, stem to stern. You work for an invisible, perfect Boss, and you’re supposed to lead a ragtag gaggle of volunteers towards God’s coming future. It’s like herding cats, but harder.”

Why There's No Such Thing As a Soul Mate

If you’re waiting to meet that person that will trigger some sort of magical moment inside of you that will dub them as your “soul mate” or “the one,” there’s a good chance you’ll be waiting for a long, long time. Get to know yourself, and then get to know people of the opposite sex who have the qualities you are looking for in a future mate.

Renewing Your Mind | Introduction | May 27, 2014

Worthwhile relationships are based on knowledge. When we meet someone for the first time, we do not consider that we really know that person until we have the opportunity to learn more about that person, such as his or her history, personality, likes, dislikes, and desires. As we come to know more about a new acquaintance, we better understand how to carry on a relationship with that person. In the same way, a vibrant relationship with the triune God must be rooted in a firm understanding of who He reveals Himself to be in His Word. In this message, Dr. Steven J. Lawson presents an overview of God’s defining attributes and invites us to pursue a more intimate and worshipful relationship with Him.

But if Not: The Miracle of Dunkirk

I’m very sorry to say that, by and large, the scriptures are not faithfully taught today, even in many Christian pulpits. We get some interesting pop psychology and leadership exhortations, but it is fairly unusual to enter a Christian church and hear the minister take a piece of scripture, read it, explain it, teach it, and apply it. I challenge you to recover the significance of scripture in your life. I exhort you, if you’re going to be a minister, or a lay reader, or a Bible teacher of any sort, teach the scriptures. I exhort you as a follower of Jesus Christ, let your life, your heart, your character, and your worship by shaped by the word of God.

On TV, How Dark Is Too Dark?

In George R. R. Martin's fictional universe, bad things happen again and again. I'm not just talking about the explicit sex and violence that viewers should expect from a serial drama airing on HBO; bad things include heartless, gruesome storylines: an adopted son betraying the family that raised him, a brother selling his sister to a warlord in hope of gaining an army, an honorable man beheaded at the order of a spoiled child, and guests slaughtered at a wedding reception.

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

27 Science Shows New Atheists to be Mean and Closed-Minded - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The fourth typology, and one of the more assertive in their view, we termed the Anti-Theist. While the Anti-Theists may be considered atheist or in some cases labeled as “new atheists,” the Anti-Theist is diametrically opposed to religious ideology. As such, the assertive Anti-Theist both proactively and aggressively asserts their views towards others when appropriate, seeking to educate the theists in the passé nature of belief and theology. In other words, antitheists view religion as ignorance and see any individual or institution associated with it as backward and socially detrimental. The Anti-Theist has a clear and – in their view, superior – understanding of the limitations and danger of religions. They view the logical fallacies of religion as an outdated worldview that is not only detrimental to social cohesion and peace, but also to technological advancement and civilized evolution as a whole. They are compelled to share their view and want to educate others into their ideological position and attempt to do so when and where the opportunity arises. Some Anti-Theist individuals feel compelled to work against the institution of religion in its various forms including social, political, and ideological, while others may assert their view with religious persons on an individual basis.

Christianity’s 5 Most Important Theologians

Without the gospel everything is useless and vain; without the gospel we are not Christians; without the gospel all riches is poverty, all wisdom folly before God; strength is weakness, and all the justice of man is under the condemnation of God. But by the knowledge of the gospel we are made children of God, brothers of Jesus Christ, fellow townsmen with the saints, citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven, heirs of God with Jesus Christ, by whom the poor are made rich, the weak strong, the fools wise, the sinner justified, the desolate comforted, the doubting sure, and slaves free. It is the power of God for the salvation of all those who believe. It follows that every good thing we could think or desire is to be found in this same Jesus Christ alone. For, he was sold, to buy us back; captive, to deliver us; condemned, to absolve us; he was made a curse for our blessing, [a] sin offering for our righteousness; marred that we may be made fair; he died for our life; so that by him fury is made gentle, wrath appeased, darkness turned into light, fear reassured, despisal despised, debt canceled, labor lightened, sadness made merry, misfortune made fortunate, difficulty easy, disorder ordered, division united, ignominy ennobled, rebellion subjected, intimidation intimidated, ambush uncovered, assaults assailed, force forced back, combat combated, war warred against, vengeance avenged, torment tormented, damnation damned, the abyss sunk into the abyss, hell transfixed, death dead, mortality made immortal.

30 New video from Reasonable Faith on the Kalam Cosmological Argument - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

"If we compare the two age determinations, there is a potential crisis. If the universe is flat, and dominated by ordinary or dark matter, the age of the universe as inferred from the Hubble constant would be about 9 billion years. The age of the universe would be shorter than the age of oldest stars. This contradiction implies that either 1) our measurement of the Hubble constant is incorrect, 2) the Big Bang theory is incorrect or 3) that we need a form of matter like a cosmological constant that implies an older age for a given observed expansion rate." http://1.usa.gov/16KU13A

31 R.C. Sproul: The ultimate cop-out - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The task of apologetics is to show that the evidence that the New Testament calls people to commit their lives to is compelling evidence and worthy of our full commitment. That often involves a lot of work for the apologist.Sometimes we would rather duck the responsibility of doing our homework, of wrestling with the problems and answering the objections, and simply say to people, “Oh, you just have to take it all in faith.” That’s the ultimate cop-out.That doesn’t honor Christ. We honor Christ by setting forth for people the cogency of the truth claims of Scripture, even as God himself does.We must take the trouble to do our work before the Spirit does his work, because the Spirit does not ask people to put their trust and faith and affection in nonsense or absurdity.

The Gospel Coalition - The Good of Politics

This book will be helpful to those who know nothing about political theology and philosophy, and would like to start learning—provided they bear in mind that it is full of bold oversimplifications, especially in its treatment of positions Skillen disagrees with. However, anyone who already knows the subject will probably find this book more simple than stimulating. And it does not really fulfill its stated goal of defending the good of politics. But I do hope Skillen has more books in him—I enjoyed this book in spite of its limitations and would look forward to reading another one.

Reasonable Faith Campaign | Reasonable Faith

“Dr. Craig, I am a sixteen year old high school student from New Zealand, and have been very inspired by the Reasonable Faith Ministries. I am a senior debater, and as it happens the only Christian in my large class of very opinionated (very mocking) young atheists. RF has given me compelling arguments to use in my frequent discussions, so thank you. Those who disagree lack the philosophical maturity to adequately address and refute the arguments. I hope one day God will soften their hearts and they'll be open to the truth. Also, watching your debating style taught me to be respectful and concise. When I was first becoming interested in apologetics I tended to get very angry and very loud... but as Paul says, "Slow to speak, quick to listen." You demonstrate that very well."

A Graduation Speech for the Torrey Honors Institute - The Scriptorium Daily

But, dear ones, don’t forget to taste and see that the Lord is good. I’m not worried that you will forget to love learning once you leave us. But sometimes, I do worry that you will confuse the finer things in life with the one thing needful, that you will choose to be an aesthete rather than an ascetic, that you will love the theatre more than the church, the literate more than the poor and the lost. None of us plan this. We have regular habits of corporate and individual devotion. We go to church, study the Bible, love and serve our neighbors, even, at times, our enemies. I don’t doubt your sincerity—Torrey students are nothing if not earnest. It’s just that I know myself, and I know you. I know what it is to secretly delight more in a great book than the Good Book. I know how easily I can tire of the same old thing, even if that thing is as wondrous and unfathomable as the cross and resurrection of Jesus. You and I, we’re people who will be good citizens, good churchgoers, good employees, good spouses and parents. We will continue to say the right things. I don’t know if we will savor the right things.

37 Making a Defense - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Apologetics has grown into a very involved discipline over the last two millennia. From the beginning, Christians have sought to answer challenges to their claims about Jesus and complaints and questions about how they lived. Those challenges have changed over the years, and apologetics has become a much more sophisticated endeavor than it was in the first century.

38 Flight: The Genius of Birds (Media Review) - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

After our introduction to bird anatomy and biology, the film goes deeper by focusing on three particular species of birds. Each of these segments are equally fascinating and emotionally moving. The first of these segments is on the evolution defying humming bird, which itself is unique among birds. With the ability to hover or fly in any direction, the humming bird’s wings flap up to one hundred time per second (yes, you read that right) and its heart beats at a rate of one thousand beats per minute. Even its tongue is a marvel to behold, which in a 20th of a second, once it penetrates the liquid nectar within a flower, splits, unfolds, scoops up the nectar, refolds, and retracts into the birds beak supplying it with the food it needs to supply the energy for its hyperactive lifestyle. The humming bird eats more than twice its weight in food a day—the equivalent of 150lbs of food a day for the average adult human. With a metabolism like that and all that crazy exercise, it’s no wonder I’ve never seen a fat humming bird!

Thanks! The RZIM family has been truly welcoming and I am overwhelmed by the love I have received from the team and its supporters. Joining the team is an honor I would never have dreamed possible just a few short years ago. I grew up in a devout Muslim family with the dual goal of boldly representing Islam while bringing honor and support to my family as a physician. But in the course of pursuing every Muslim mother’s dream, I encountered Christ. He captivated me. His truth overwhelmed me. There was no escaping him, not for me. I became a believer in 2005. After graduating from medical school, I entered into full-time ministry, ultimately pursuing graduate study in the fields of New Testament and Islam.

40 Handling an Objection: "I love the moral teachings of Jesus but I don't think He is divine." - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

I could respond to this by using the C.S. Lewis argument that Jesus is either Lord, Lunatic, or Liar. I tend to not use that one a lot. While it still has some value it generally begs the question of the reliability of the New Testament. After all, some skeptics assume the deity of Jesus is a later invention of the Church. As I have noted elsewhere, this is incorrect. The Christology is Jesus was at the very start of the formation of the early Jesus movement.

The Unattainable Good Life of Elliot Rodger

Here is part of the Gospel’s great magic: Because our righteousness is hidden in Christ’s finished work on the Cross, our existential justification does not come from our efforts or the great things we accomplish or experience. This does not mean that our efforts are meaningless — that would be a gnostic position. Quite the contrary, our lives become a living sacrifice to the Lord, meaningful and significant regardless of our station or experience. Through the Gospel we have the freedom to pursue various manifestations of the Good Life as defined by joyful flourishing and obedient delight in the goodness of God’s world. Part of the Church’s role in our contemporary world is to present these alternative visions of the Good Life, ones which do not dehumanize our neighbors and legitimize hate, misogyny, and violence. Although it is necessary and important to challenge the misogyny and mental illness that contributed to Elliot Rodger’s violence, it is not enough. The Church must also challenge the world’s narratives and practices and distorted visions of the Good Life as sexual achievements.

42 Why Be Good? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

In my last blog, I talked about drivers who ignore the one-way sign posted at the end of the street on which I live. A frequent tactic of those who live on the street to discourage this flouting of the rules is to shout “WRONG WAY”, at cars failing to adhere to these rules. I suppose this will alert someone who was not aware they were driving in the wrong direction to their misdeed, but mostly it will make them aware that people are watching.

43 Reading the Bible through the Lens of Your Desire - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The Council of Nicea in 325 C.E. leaned on the Fourth Gospel as literal history in order to formulate the creeds and ultimately to undergird such doctrines as the Incarnation and the Holy Trinity. The texts used to support that creedal development, my studies have led me to affirm, have nothing to do with an external God entering humanity in the person of Jesus, but are rather attempts to describe the experience of the human breaking the boundaries of consciousness and entering into the transformation available inside a sense of a mystical oneness with God. If that is so, then the Fourth Gospel has the potential to become the primary biblical source upon the basis of which Christianity can be changed dramatically to speak with radical freshness to the 21st century. Christianity is not about the divine becoming human so much as it is about the human becoming divine. That is a paradigm shift of the first order.

44 How Apologetics Saved My Faith - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

I became a Christian at 24 after a cancer diagnosis.  I had been an atheist for 10 years but came to God in desperation.  I left Capitol Hill (and politics altogether) to learn about Christianity.  I attended what many believed was a conservative seminary but had slowly slipped into liberalism by the time I arrived in 1999.  I was sold on “higher criticism” (or a skeptical approach to the historicity and inerrency of Scripture) and joined the then growing “Emergent Church” movement.  Within a few years, I was where Rob Bell is now–a soft universalist with a condescending attitude toward conservatives.  Yet, I was also spiritually dead and was struggling with depression.  I was quickly headed back to the atheism I had thought I had left behind while praying for my life.

45 What is Wrong With Abortion? A Philosophical Case - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Is it possible to make a case for the prima facie wrongness of killing a human foetus that does not depend on theological premises? In 1989 atheist philosopher Donald Marquis introduced a philosophical case for immorality of abortion that neither depended on the personhood nor consciousness of the fetus.

46 We should care enough about truth and reason - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

There is absolutely nothing wrong with admitting you don't know something or that you're currently inadequately equipped to think a topic through. What is unacceptable, however, is running from this fact and thereby giving up on intellectual and spiritual growth in the interest of avoiding embarrassment or possible rejection. We all need help in this area, and we should care enough about truth and reason to give that help. Even if we agree with one another's conclusions, we need to dedicate ourselves for Christ's sake to refusing to allow each other to reach those conclusions with poor argumentation and sloppy treatment of data.

47 Was There an Exodus and Conquest? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

In this last of my posts on archaeology and early Israel, I will focus attention on what is perhaps one of the biggest hang-ups that critics have with the historical trustworthiness of the Old Testament – the Exodus & Conquest. In the biblical record the two events stand or fall together. If there was an exodus as the Bible states, then there was also a military conquest which followed it. Both of these events (if they happened), should be discernible from the historical and archaeological record. If we follow the Pentateuch’s exact account, then we know that there was a 40 year interval between the exodus and conquest.

49 Thoughts on the Growth of Christianity - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

When the apostles in the 1st century church were brought before the Sanhedrin council, charged with preaching the resurrection of Jesus, a zealous Pharisee Gamaliel counseled moderation and calmness. By referencing well-known past events regarding other messianic movements, he advised them to refrain from persecuting or killing the apostles. He stated that “if their work or counsel was of man, it would come to nothing; but if it was of God, they could not destroy it, and therefore ought to be on their guard lest they should be "found fighting against God" (Acts5:34-39).

The Gospel Coalition - Churches Leave as Denominations Break Their Own Rules

The Gospel Coalition is a fellowship of evangelical churches deeply committed to renewing our faith in the gospel of Christ and to reforming our ministry practices to conform fully to the Scriptures.  We yearn to work with all who, in addition to embracing our confession and theological vision for ministry, seek the lordship of Christ over  the whole of life with unabashed hope in the power of the Holy Spirit to transform individuals, communities, and cultures.
