Is the Bible Full of Contradictions? | Stand to Reason

I’ve devoted the last few months to answering this question. What I have discovered is that many alleged contradictions arise because an unfair standard, or false expectation, is applied to the Bible. Most modern readers just assume that the biblical authors wrote like we do today in the twenty-first century. Consequently, they end up applying a twenty-first century standard to an ancient document. This is a gross mistake. In fact, most claims of Bible contradictions stem from the reader misunderstanding, and even misrepresenting, the author’s intent . The alleged contradictions stem from the reader, not the author.

Hell’s Best Kept Secret | Living Waters

Why do 80–90% of those making a decision for Christ fall away from the faith? What is the biblical principle that Spurgeon, Wesley, Whitefield, etc., used to reach the lost? Why has the Church neglected it? Don’t let anything stop you from listening to this incredible teaching.

Episode 073: Hell and Kids - Christian Research Institute

It is important to understand the sources of our modern distaste for the teaching of the doctrine of hell, for these are part of the strongholds characteristic of our times. By critically exploring these sources, we can best instruct children in the essential biblical doctrine of hell and avoid an abuse of greater severity: their being unaware of its reality.

Loving God with All Our Minds

We are intellectual beings. Jesus tells us that we are to pursue God with the deepest parts of who we are, including our intellect. Jesus lived this out. If He is the Lord of our lives, this should mean patterning our lives after His in all ways. Thus, being intellectual about our faith and loving God accordingly is simply part of our discipleship

Clearing the Fog: 'Christianity Doesn't Need Evidence Because Faith is Blind.'

First, Jesus predicted his resurrection on multiple occasions in the presence of the disciples. Thomas should not have been surprised at the return of Jesus. Second, Thomas heard eyewitness testimony (evidence) from the rest of the disciples and yet still refused to believe. (The vast majority of scientific knowledge we possess depends upon trusting the conclusions of other scientists, which is true for virtually all disciplines.) Third, Jesus did many miracles during his ministry as proof of his identity. In fact, right after the story of Jesus scolding Thomas, John said the miracles of Jesus were recorded “so that you may believe Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and by believing you may have life in His name” ( John 20:30-31 )

First-Century Mark Fragment Update

Apology In my debate with Bart, I mentioned that I had it on good authority that this was definitely a first -century fragment of Mark. A representative for who I understood was the owner of FCM urged me to make the announcement at the debate, which they realized would make this go viral. However, the information I received and was assured to have been vetted was incorrect. It was my fault for being naïve enough to trust that the data I got was unquestionable, as it was presented to me. So, I must first apologize to Bart Ehrman, and to everyone else, for giving misleading information about this discovery. While I am sorry for publicly announcing inaccurate facts, at no time in the public statements (either in the debate or on my blogsite) did I knowingly do this. But I should have been more careful about trusting any  sources without my personal verification, a lesson I have since learned.

3 Ways to Help Kids Connect Obedience with Joy

“ Obey ? What does that mean?” The boy I was tutoring stared at me in confusion. I had just been telling him that he should do his homework to obey his dad—until I realized I was using a foreign word. I was stumped. How had this boy gone seven years without hearing the word “obey”? It actually made sense. Many non-Christian homes, including his, omit this word from their vocabulary. They might even shun it altogether. Obedience has baggage, after all. It’s linked to rules, to consequences, and—worst of all—to authority. The word “obey” is out of place in our don’t-tell-me-what-to-do society. But Christians should have a different reaction to the word. For us, obedience means blessing, not baggage. And the ultimate authority who was our Judge is now our Savior. For Christians, obedience means blessing, not baggage. Obedience draws us into all the blessings of being part of God’s covenant family. But obedience goes against our sin nature, so we have to teach our kids  how to find joy in it. Here are three ways to help your kids connect obedience with joy. 1.

12 Bill Gates Recommends People Read a Book About Christianity and the Idea of Healing

The memoir tells Bowler’s journey of wrestling with her faith while battling stage IV colon cancer. Raised to believe that everything happens for a reason, Bowler tried to discern the deeper purpose behind her condition. Perhaps it was a divine test or something. But along the way, Bowler was forced to reconsider the simple formula for reality provided by the prosperity in which she believed: namely, that God rewards the faithful with health and wealth.

The three things I wish someone had the guts to tell me when I graduated from college

Millions graduate from colleges and universities across America in the months of May and June, and most of these graduates are under 25 years of age . This year, according to the National Center for Education Statistics , approximately 1.0 million people will graduate with an associate's degree, 1.9 million with a bachelor's degree, 790,000 with a master's degree, and 183,000 with a doctor's degree. Years ago, I was one of these graduates, earning a bachelor’s degree in Design and then a master’s degree in Architecture. I made many decisions along the way as I earned these degrees, but I had no idea that the most important choices I would ever make - “trajectory decisions,” as I like to call them – were still ahead of me, the least of which was my choice of career.

Christians Answer Questions Atheists Say Christians Can’t Answer

It also depends on your understanding of faith and belief.  The Hebrew language has no “to be” verb forms in it. In other words, to the Ancient Jews, faith/belief was an action-oriented direction – a choice.  Emunah – the Hebrew word usually used for OT faith, means faithfulness, trust, etc. You can actually, even if you aren’t sure you believe it in your head, act as if it’s true and live in such a way that glorifies God.  That is biblical faith, to bring about redemption of the world through telling others about what God does, did and is doing, helping the victimized, the poor, the widow, those in need, ease suffering in the world, and helping people change their lives by inviting them into relationship with Yeshua (Jesus). Often we think of faith as in our heads, but this is not the way biblical faith was until the Greeks got a hold of it.  A wise Messianic Rabbi told me, “Do not put Descartes before the horse.” In other words, while Descartes may have said, “I think therefore I am.” The OT Jews and first Christians would say, “I live therefore I act.

Four Truths about the New Testament Every Christian Should Know

People love diversity. When it comes to music, cuisine, clothing styles, or any other aspect of culture, variety can be a beautiful thing. When it comes to the background of the New Testament canon, however, the belief in diversity is very nearly an assault on the deity of Christ and questioning the teachings of the New Testament. Diversity allows people to create the Jesus of their choosing—and reject the Jesus of Scripture.

A Personal God is the Best Explanation for the Beginning of the Universe

Christians aren’t the only ones looking for the first “uncaused cause” of the universe. Everyone, theists and atheists alike, is looking for the cause of a universe that clearly had a beginning . If the cause of the universe was itself caused, then our search for the beginning of everything would continue, wouldn’t it? We’d be sifting through a series of previous causes toward infinity past, and we all recognize that a search of this nature is both futile and illogical. Believers, skeptics and seekers are in search of the uncaused “first cause”; some of us believe this first cause to be purely “natural’ while others believe this first cause to be supernatural.

The Poached Egg is Trending at GiveSendGo!

Some of you might be wondering, “Why do you need $15,000? That seems like a lot to run a website.” Well, you would be right, $15k is a lot to ask, but here’s what $15k is for. For the past several years I’ve been paid a modest salary with our partner, Ratio Christi, with donations I’ve raised through the website going toward that salary. Now that I’ve made the difficult decision to leave RC, that salary will no longer be available to me. The $15k I hope to raise will sustain me financially for roughly six months, while I keep TPE going and seek more permanent funding. Running TPE is a full time job, and I’m working hard on making it even better with a complete redesign and reboot on another platform. The new site will be better than ever and more functional and accessible to everyone, which I hope will lead to expanding its reach. Can you please take a moment to visit my GiveSendGo campaign page (here) ? There you can read my short testimony and why I started TPE. While you’re there I hope you will prayerfully consider helping to keep the momentum of the campaign going by making a contribution of any amount.

With New Theory of the Cambrian Explosion, Scientists Reach (Literally) for the Stars | Evolution News

We should then plausibly view viruses as among the most information-rich natural systems in the known Universe (Fig. 4). Their size dictates they are very small targets minimizing the probability of destruction by flash heating or ionizing radiation, Hoyle and Wickramasinghe (1979) e.g. Chapter 1. Their nanometer dimensions plausibly allow easy transport and dispersal by micrometer sized dust grains and other protective physical matrices of similar size. They are then nanoparticle-sized genetic vectors which contain all the essential information to take over and drive the physiology of any given target cell within which they mesh. Their replicative growth means they are produced, and exist, in huge numbers on cosmic scales; so that they (and to a lesser quantitative extent their cellular reservoirs) can suffer huge losses by inactivation while still leaving a residue of millions of surviving particles potentially still infective. A virus then is a type of compressed module in touch with the whole of the cell’s very ability to grow and divide to produce progeny cells and thus to evolve.

God's Hiddenness Is Intended to Provoke Us

Many of us have moments in our life when God’s presence and providence seem obvious, but there are also many times when God seems far away and “hidden”. In fact, the “hiddenness” of God is a common objection to His existence. As a skeptic, I often wondered why God didn’t make Himself known in a visible, tangible way. Why doesn’t God appear to us in a public setting to end all doubt about His existence? I’ve written about this objection , and I believe the answer lies in God’s desire to provoke us; His desire to elicit a true, loving response from His children. This goal of producing something beautiful (a genuine, well-intentioned, loving response), requires Him to hide from us.

Opiates Are Real, but So Is the Gospel

The opioid crisis in America is real. It is here, and it will be here for a long time. But the gospel is real, and the power of the living God is greater than the power of opiates. Jesus Himself said, concerning the salvation of a man caught up in the idolatry of riches: “With man it is impossible, but not with God. For all things are possible with God” (Mark 10:27). Let us pray and work and believe that prodigal sons and daughters can be restored to their families, and that one day they themselves can sing along with you: “You who have made me see many troubles and calamities will revive me again; from the depths of the earth you will bring me up again. You will increase my greatness and comfort me again. . . . My lips will shout for joy, when I sing praise to you; my soul also, which you have redeemed” (Ps. 71:20–21, 23).

Why Thanksgiving Will Always Be A Uniquely Christian Holiday (Podcast) | Cold Case Christianity

In this new audio podcast, J. Warner discusses the nature of “giving thanks” and the holiday we call Thanksgiving. Is it possible to celebrate a secular, atheistic “Thanksgiving”? Is it possible to thank the impersonal forces of physics that govern the universe? J. How Josh McDowell Saw School Violence Coming — And Showed the Solution — Almost 40 Years Ago | The Stream

Almost forty years ago, Christian speaker and author Josh McDowell predicted violence like we’re seeing too often in schools today. “Violence may break out soon. … It will be very blatant,” he said, according to notes I still have from a talk he delivered in July, 1979. “Students used to think there were solutions. No longer. Students don’t think there’s hope.’”

Alaska's Flag was designed by a 7th Grader, Benny Benson. Benny was an Aleut boy that lived in a boys school and a true Alaskan. see http://www.alaska.edu/opa/eInfo/index... for a better explanation. That was also the source for the picture of Benny and his original flag. I have no rights to this song and believe it to be in the public domain. As seen in the comments, this rendition is believed to be by Alaska Chamber Singers. The Alaska Flag song is posted here for the enjoyment of my family and friends.

32 You Can Believe the Promises of God and Be Lost

Another way to say it would be that in all the acts of saving faith the Holy Spirit enables us not only to perceive and affirm factual truth, but also to apprehend and embrace spiritual beauty. It is the “embracing of spiritual beauty” that is the essential core of saving faith. And this embrace is what will shape our lives most deeply and receive the “well done” at the last day.

33 God’s Design in Detours

In a home for retarded children, Catherine was nurtured twenty years. The child had been [mentally handicapped] from the beginning, and had never spoken a word, but only vegetated. She either gazed quietly at the walls or made distorted movements. To eat, to drink, to sleep, were her whole life. She seemed not to participate at all in what happened around her. A leg had to be amputated. The staff wished Cathy well and hoped that the Lord would soon take her to Himself. One day the doctor called the director to come quickly. Catherine was dying. When both entered the room, they could not believe their senses. Catherine was singing Christian hymns she had heard and had picked up, just those suitable for death beds. She repeated over and over again the German song, “Where does the soul find its fatherland, its rest?” She sang for half an hour with transfigured face, then she passed away quietly. 36 The Devil Is Not in the Details: Fighting Temptation with Specific Truth

But when applied to temptation, diabolical “Impressionism” becomes powerful and terrible. The devil doesn’t employ realism when painting a temptation “because there is no truth in him” (John 8:44). His goal is to use the spiritual equivalents of color, lighting, and less defined lines to evoke certain sinful emotional sensations. The power is in the momentary emotional impression it makes on the “viewer.” The devil doesn’t want us to see the real thing; he just wants us to experience a rather vague impression that yielding to the temptation will bring happiness.

Free From God

I recall an online conversation I had with a skeptic about spiritual things. To gain some clarification, I asked if he was an atheist or agnostic. His response? “I’m free!” Now, although this in no way answers the question, it does illustrate what people think about religion. It’s some form of mental slavery that you must liberate yourself from. Then you can be free to live your life however you wish. And freedom is a very important thing!

Share Your Faith in a Skeptical World

As a result, one is left wondering if there would ever be reason to speak outside of accepted cultural values or plausibility structures in evangelism, as a way to provoke thought or arouse curiosity. For instance, I think of Paul staunchly asserting the resurrection to skeptical Sadducees and Stoics alike—people who would reject such views out-of-hand. Or I think of Jesus incisively challenging opponents for their sin and unbelief, speaking with authority and not as the scribes.
