Answering Muslims: The Spirit of Islam vs. the Spirit of Christ

On this website, we engage Muslims and the foundations of Islam without trying to be "PC". We feel honesty is better than disguised language. As you can read on our FAQ, this is out of love, not out of hatred. Thanks, and we're looking forward to seeing your comments!

Louis C.K. is not a good person | Think Christian

I’m thinking of Paul again, when he admits to the impertinent Corinthians that “We are fools for the sake of Christ, but you are wise in Christ. We are weak, but you are strong. You are held in honor, but we in disrepute.” What would Christian engagement be like if we were quick to grant our interlocutors that we are sometimes silly and often feckless? I think that such a practice would require more than a commitment to empathy and liberal dialogue. It just might entail conceding the all-important point that every tongue must eventually confess: that we ourselves are not any more important than anyone else.

Are You Good Enough for God? Ben Piershale's Spoken Word

Ben Piershale shares a powerful story from the Bible about a woman, known as the woman with the issue of blood. He's reminding us that God is right here with us, no matter what. The key to the whole story is that we never find out this woman's name, because in reality she is to reflect on our own lives. She is being used as an example showing that none of us are perfect, but God loves us either way

Historical Reliability of the Gospels Giveaway

The Canonical Gospels are constantly under attack. Some claim that they’ve been copied from earlier myths and legends. Others allege they can’t be depended on for historically accurate information. Still others argue that scribed changed the text so that we no longer have what the authors wrote. How should Christians respond to these claims?

Standing Athwart the March of History, Yelling, “Stop! Wait for Me!” | The Stream

For now, as a kind of intuitive test, simply imagine that some friend of yours had been cheated on by his or her spouse of the opposite sex and had confided this in you. How would you respond? Probably you would understand your friend’s sense of having been betrayed and offer condolences. Now imagine the same scenario, except suppose that your friend’s spouse were of the same sex. Would your reaction be terribly different? Would you say something like, “Well, your expectation of fidelity and indeed your whole relationship never made any sense to begin with, so what’s the big deal”?

After Debate, Atheist and Christian Team Up to Defend Free Speech | The Stream

The true motives of the GQA are revealed by what is not in the letter: the arguments made by Dr. Shermer in support of same sex marriage, arguments he made with great passion that elicited equal passion — on both sides of the issue — from the audience. If those in the GQA are so interested in advancing their position through sound reason and science — which was Dr. Shermer’s point — why would they not highlight the arguments offered in support of it? Instead, the GQA seems to think they have a right not to hear an opposing opinion lest they be challenged!

4 Why Were Domestic Violence Charges Against Ray Rice Just Dropped?

A security video from an Atlantic City casino showed Rice brutally punching out his then-fiancee and then dragging her unconscious body out of an elevator in February of last year. He was later charged with a count of simple assault and aggravated assault-bodily injury in the third degree causing bodily harm. The simple assault charge was dropped. Rice was recently granted “pretrial intervention” (PTI) even though the program—which lets defendants not be convicted if they take part in court-ordered requirements—is supposed to involve only non-violent, victimless crimes ...

The Hidden Blessings of Sharing the Gospel with Complete Strangers

“He had to go through Samaria on the way. Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, ‘Please give me a drink.’ He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food.” The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans. She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?’ Jesus replied, ‘If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.’”

Prayer - Back to Basics - Christian Research Institute

Our goal at the Christian Research Institute is to get people back to basics. That may sound mundane but it is so important for you to experience the reality of a relationship with your Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I’ve had the experience numerous times now – and every time it was a struggle – as my children began to outgrow their diapers I’d try to talk them into leaving the kiddy pool and launching out into the deep. For them the kiddies pool was all there was and ever would be. That is, of course, until they experienced the deep. Once they learned how to swim in the ocean they forever lost their appetite for shallow water.

Groundbreaking Study On Gay Marriage Views May Have Been Faked

The LaCour-Green study had examined the work of activists with the Los Angeles LGBT Center. After California’s gay marriage ban passed in 2008, activists at the center had more than 12,000 one-on-one conversations in Los Angeles neighborhoods with people who overwhelmingly supported the ban. LaCour’s idea was to see if those conversations produced any lasting change. He purportedly designed a randomized experiment to replicate those conversations, with a series of follow-up surveys online to test how the anti-gay voters felt about gay rights and gay marriage over time. Those who were contacted by the openly gay canvassers showed substantially more positive attitudes toward gay marriage as much as nine months later.

Batkid Begins - Official Trailer

http://bit.ly/DeadlineSubscribe One child. One wish. Millions moved. Batkid takes SF & the world on his quest to conquer evil. 'Batkid Begins' follows the events leading up to the day Batkid saved San Francisco and what happens when an event goes unintentionally viral. The goal that day was to get a couple hundred people to show up to support Miles Scott and his wish to become Batkid, after battling leukemia for more than half his short life. The thought was a crowd of 200 would seem huge to a five year old boy, but what happened next blew everyone's minds. Support for the idea of granting Miles’s wish kept pouring in and soon it was clear that the crowd would be much bigger than the modest expectations. Instead of a few hundred, 25,000 people lined the streets to cheer Miles on as he saved Gotham. The superhero spirit spilled onto the Internet as news of Batkid’s heroics reached over 2 billion people, touching hearts around the world. Batkid was impossible to miss that day as we were glued to our computers, phones, and in San Francisco, our office windows trying to be a part of the celebration.

The Integrity of Words and Our Confession of Faith

Sadly, the landscape is littered with theological institutions that have poorly taught and have been poorly led. Theological liberalism has destroyed scores of seminaries, divinity schools, and other institutions for the education of the ministry. Many of these schools are now extinct, even as the churches they served have been evacuated. Others linger on, committed to the mission of revising the Christian faith in order to make peace with the spirit of the age. These schools intentionally and boldly deny the pattern of sound words in order to devise new words for a new age — producing a new faith. As J. Gresham Machen rightly observed almost a century ago, we do not really face two rival versions of Christianity. We face Christianity on the one hand and, on the other hand, some other religion that selectively uses Christian words, but is not Christianity.

How to Get the Job You Want

I honestly think most big company jobs are a waste of time. I did it because I needed the money and it was a huge brand in the e-commerce business. But, it was pure drugery with zero contact potential with the people who could make promotion decisions so I left utterly depressed to start my own business and transition to a new career. Work that mellenials like myself can get out of college is far more perilous that starting your own business. I'm still depressed, cynical, but also realistic. Not happy but definitely better off than I was at Dead-end.com. Ultimately, the only work that matters is the work you do for yourself. Way too many of my fellow graduates are stressing to an early grave at 60 hours a week making somebody else rich. You have a choice, choose freedom and opportunity over perceived security. Haven't we given up enough in the pursuit of perceived security over the last 15 years? God values you. Now value yourself and trust in His provision.

Four Bible Verses Every Muslim Needs to Know

http://www.answeringmuslims.com The Qur'an affirms the inspiration, preservation, and authority of the Christian scriptures (see Qur'an 3:3-4, 5:43 -47, 5:68, 6:114-115, 7:157, 10:94, 18:27 , etc.). Hence, Muslims who take the Qur'an seriously should also take the Bible seriously. Here are four Bible verses every Muslim needs to know: Luke 9:22 —“The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.” Mark 10:45 —“For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” John 6:40 —“For this is the will of My Father, that everyone who beholds the Son and believes in Him will have eternal life, and I Myself will raise him up on the last day.” Matthew 28:19 —“Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

Why All Churches Should Address Depression And Anxiety

It’s no secret that my past  was ridden with mental health issues—ones that kept me from wanting to live for much of my teenage life. I’m very vocal about this truth, and I will continue to be as along as my story may have an impact on others who need to hear it. And while I do believe today’s church is doing better at addressing the issue that is mental health, I believe there can be so much more done than what is currently taking place in regards to depression and anxiety. Let me explain.

3 Ways Rising Secularism Affects Evangelism

In some ways this change is freeing. It allows us to do what we should have been doing all along: retelling the entire Bible’s whole story, from creation to fall to redemption to consummation. In a sense, a whole-Bible, one-story gospel releases us from the temptation to close the deal and produce fake conversions or offer a kind of fire insurance that doesn’t truly save. Secularists aren’t interested in insurance from a fire that they don’t believe in.

Evangelicals and the Search for Credibility - Mere Orthodoxy | Christianity, Politics, and Culture

You can see similar concerns in Chappel’s letter and in Keller’s writing on sexuality and gender where he tends to work very hard to avoid giving a straightforward response to a simple question like whether or not sexual activity between two people of the same gender is morally licit. There is a concern with not saying the wrong thing, with wanting to avoid the worst excesses of the previous generation, and with trying to help non-Christians distinguish between the worst ravings of 90s era fundamentalists and the actual teachings of scripture and the historic church. They are trying to clear away some of the worst misconceptions about the church so that the central claims of Christianity can be given a fair hearing.

Yoga Pants and What the Bible Really Says About Modesty

"It does not flaunt wealth, diminish others, or seek selfish attention; it professes reverence toward God. It is a quality both women and men should seek to exhibit." What intrigues me the most about this article was the sentence above. I see so many men at church flaunting wealth- ridiculously expensive watches, expensive clothes, and silly-looking slicked back hair (the new "in" look) and name-dropping like crazy, among other things. I don't hear anyone complaining about how un-modest these men are being. So I agree that modesty should be a double-edged sword and applied to both men and women under the lens described in this article- humility, appropriateness, and devotion to God. Really enjoyed this article. Thank you.

How to Be a Puritan Husband

Over the course of my ministry, one of the things I have sought to emphasize is the need to embrace “reforming marriage.” Another time in the history of the church when this same emphasis arose was in the great Puritan movement of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. If we are serious, we should look closely at what they did, because they had much more of an impact than we have had. As it turns out, their legacy is important to us.

If-Only Discipleship - The Gospel Coalition Australia | TGC Australia

The reason Paul gives for being content even in difficult circumstances is that “the Lord assigned them to us” (v. 17b). Our circumstances are not simply due to dumb luck or even dumb choices. In the end God planted us in them and we can trust in the goodness and wisdom of God’s sovereignty. And there are no exceptions: “This is the rule I lay down in all the churches” (v. 17b). Paul believes that you don’t need to change your circumstances to serve God to the full.

36
Jesus and the Millennium - The Master's Seminary

If interpreted literally, the Old Testament gives a clear picture of the prophetic expectation of Israel. They confidently anticipated the coming of a Savior and Deliverer, a Messiah who would be Prophet, Priest, and King. They expected that He would deliver them from their enemies and usher in a kingdom of righteousness, peace, and prosperity upon a redeemed earth. It is hardly subject to dispute that the Old Testament presents such a picture, not in isolated texts, but in the constantly repeated declaration of most of the prophets. All the major prophets and practically all the minor prophets have Messianic sections picturing the restoration and glory of Israel in this future kingdom. This is so clear to competent students of the Old Testament that it is conceded by practically all parties that the Old Testament presents premillennial doctrine if interpreted literally. The premillennial interpretation offers the only possible literal fulfillment for the hundreds of verses of prophetic testimony. ( The Millennial Kingdom , 114)

How to Foster Peace Between Christians and Muslims

People of different faiths are working together on common concerns, building bridges of peace and understanding, and reducing violence while solving problems shared by all humanity. World Vision, a humanitarian organization following Christ’s example of caring for the poor, works in dozens of Muslim, Hindu, or Buddhist majority countries. We don’t compromise our own beliefs and values, nor do we require other faith traditions to alter theirs. Instead, we build on what we share—a commitment to save lives and promote peace, believing we have a divine duty to do so.

What to Say When You Don't Know What to Say

This is the most awesome thing I have read in a long time. I am really good at being able to know and understand what people around my feel like on the inside. I don't know how to explain it, I guess it is just intuition. But my problem is that I don't know what to say or do when they do come out and tell me what they are struggling with or dealing with! I understand them completely and I really want to be there with them, but I always seem to screw everything up by responding the wrong way, simply because I don't know how to respond. THANK YOU for posting this article :) It answered my question perfectly of how to respond in situations like that. It will help me a lot in life- I know it.

“Whoever Would Save His Life Will Lose It” — A Charge for Graduates

Jesus called the crowd and his disciples to himself, and then called for them to follow him. The logic of Christian discipleship is unlike any other logic you will ever hear. He who would save his life will lose it, whoever loses his life for the sake of Christ and his gospel will save it. If anyone is ashamed of Christ and of his words in this generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.
