JP Moreland's Web » Update on My Health and New Books Released!

Regarding my health, there is much to say. My prostate was removed in August, 2015, but some cancer was missed, so I just finished 38 radiation treatments and am on Lupron injections every three months (it blocks Testosterone and gives me hot flashes!). In 6 months I’ll have blood work drawn and I’ll know whether or not I still have the cancer. The good news is that it is slow growing, so at 70, even if it is still there, I’d have 10-15 years to live if we did nothing further. Regarding my colon cancer, I am now at the 2-year mark. Every 6 months I’ve had a PET/CAT scan and an endoscopy/colonoscopy, and all have been clear, so in a month, I am having surgery to remove the chemo-port in my chest. I have 3 years to go to be declared in remission, but the 2-year mark is a big one. I have a rare disease (Lynch Muir-Torre Syndrome) that is what caused me to get colon cancer and it also causes cancerous lesions to grown on my skin. They can metastasize, so I get checked every 2 months by a dermatologist. My pacemaker is working well and keeping my resting post at 60 (it was around 45 and I had no energy). I have the beginning signs of atrial flutter returning (I had surgery to get rid of it), but if it does, the surgery is not bad, and they can get rid of it again. Pray for my liver readings. I have non-alcoholic fatty liver, and my readings are really high. I have lost 10 pounds and hope to lose 5 more. In sum, it’s been an interesting 3 years, but to be honest, I’ve never been closer to Jesus nor had so much day-to-day peace and joy.

1 Is Apologetics Practical?

Many times it is necessary for the Christian case maker to make an apologetic for apologetics.  We must be equipped to defend and persuade fellow believers that apologetics is vital and biblical. I recall once sitting across the desk of a pastor who said, "Apologetics is useful, sure, but I am meeting with men and women who's marriages are falling apart.  How is apologetics going to help me then?" At the time I didn't have an answer for him and I actually thought the point was a valid one.  However, one day while reading the book of Titus this assumption was challenged.  In this letter to Titus the Apostle Paul is writing to give him [Titus] "personal authorization and guidance in meeting opposition, instructions about faith and conduct, and warnings about false teachers." [1] It was Paul's qualifications for elders that caught my eye.  He writes: "...holding fast the faithful word which is in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.  For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, who must be silenced because they are upsetting whole families , teaching things they should not teach for the sake of sordid gain.

Reality Check: Has Science Explained the Origin of Life? | Evolution News

Science has only one testable, reproducible, and verifiable option on the table that can produce significant levels of functional information: intelligent minds. You can test this yourself by sitting down with a piece of paper and writing a short, meaningful paragraph. If you can pull off this feat, then you have just demonstrated that intelligent design can produce significant levels of useful information. Evidence of what intelligent design can do is all around us, from the smartphone in your pocket, to the jets you fly in, to the podcasts you listen to.

Rehearsing the Past into the Present

I find that I so quickly forget the ways that God has been my help in the past. I forget the answered prayer. I forget the visible deliverances. I forget the ways that He has always provided in the past. My current circumstances blind me. They drown out all remembrance of God’s past faithfulness to me. I, like David, need to be reminded of verse 9. And I am convinced that there are seasons of life for all of us when we need to be reminded of God’s past faithfulness so that we can be encouraged in the present and not lose heart. When the doctor says that we have cancer; when our marriage falls apart; when our children turn their backs on the Lord; when our lives do not seem to go the way we have planned; when a loved one dies; or when discouragement and frustration in ministry overwhelm us—these are times when we need to be reminded that the God who has been our help in the past will be our help in the present, regardless of what our current circumstances may tell us.

How Sufficient Was Jesus’ Satisfaction?

Such a statement is also a classic place to consider the sufficiency of Jesus Christ’s sacrifice. Some claim that the mere mention of texts such as John 1:29 or John 3:16 defeat Reformed theology, as if to say, “You see, Jesus died for everyone.” One book even has an image of a balance, with “John Calvin” on the high side and “John 3:16” weighing down the other. 1 But as we’ve seen already , this is overly simplistic. Unless one believes in universally effectual salvation, everyone limits the effectiveness of Jesus’ death. We have to ask, in what sense does Jesus take away the sins of the world? Texts such as John 1:29 have been understood throughout the history of the church to express the sufficiency of Jesus’ satisfaction of God’s infinite justice on the cross.

The Moral Question Behind Infinity War

In  Infinity War , Captain America says, “We don’t trade lives.” He refused to have Vision's life exchanged for others. Yet there came a point in which taking a life (at the person's request and permission) was the only apparent option to save the lives of others. Scarlett Witch destroyed the mind stone, at the request of Vision, which ended his life (even though Thanos turns back time and brings him back temporarily before killing him). And Star-Lord tried to fulfill his promise to Gamora to kill her when she was in the hands of Thanos (even though Thanos turned his laser into bubbles and later killed Gamora himself).

It is impossible to prove that an ancient account is fully reliable, and the very fact that Mark’s Gospel records miracles is enough for some people to reject it as a reliable record. FOMO

FOMO is all of those things on steroids. When I was a kid, I used to look across the street and imagine the wonderful things the rich kid’s family in my neighborhood was doing. But now we don’t have to imagine; we can see it all in real time on social media. FOMO can strike every time a neighbor or friend posts pictures of their amazing vacation, the really cool birthday party they had (to which I wasn’t invited), and more. If I’m not reasonably secure and happy myself, looking at all those posts with their pics of the happiness, bliss, and just plain awesomeness of everyone else’s life can make me anxious, insecure, and unhappy.

Rethinking 'For the Bible Tells Me So'

Skeptics like to claim that the Bible has been changed so much that we can’t possibly know what was originally in it. This statement has undermined some people’s faith in the Bible as the Word of God. Thus, many may not bother to read it since it’s assumed to be full of errors.

Waiting to Awaken Love

Vineyard tending is a long, patient process of waiting and watching in which one failure doesn’t bring the whole endeavor to nothing. The farmer who fails doesn’t have to give up the vineyard as damaged goods. He can repent and rebuild the broken wall and start again to watch and wait. Equally, while keeping the walls is important in vineyard tending, it is not the only thing. It’s about taking care of tender blossoms. Tending your sexual vineyard is therefore not simply about actual physical sexual intercourse; it is about protecting your mind from habitual lust, romantic fantasy, and pornography, all of which can have long-term damaging effects. You can have a vineyard whose walls are still intact but whose blossoms have been trampled into the muddy dirt in other ways.

The Secret Benefit of Fasting

The key difference is Christian purpose. We could say Spiritual purpose — with a capital S for the Holy Spirit. Not just spiritual as opposed to material, but Spiritual as opposed to natural. For Christians, an essential, irreducible aspect of Christian fasting is a Christian purpose. Whether it’s strengthening earnest prayer (Ezra 8:23; Joel 2:12; Acts 13:3). Or seeking God’s guidance (Judges 20:26; Acts 14:23) or his deliverance or protection (2 Chronicles 20:3–4; Ezra 8:21–23). Or humbling ourselves before him (1 Kings 21:27–29; Psalm 35:13). Or expressing repentance (1 Samuel 7:6; Jonah 3:5–8) or grief (1 Samuel 31:13; 2 Samuel 1:11–12) or concern for his work (Nehemiah 1:3–4; Daniel 9:3). Or overcoming temptation and dedicating ourselves to him (Matthew 4:1–11). Or best of all, expressing love and devotion to him (Luke 2:37), and saying with our fast, “This much, O God, I want more of you.”

Sci-Fi, Free Will, and the Problem of Evil - Christian Research Institute

In Pleasantville (1998), modern-day high school siblings David (Tobey Maguire) and Jennifer (Reese Witherspoon) are transported into David’s favorite 1958 black and white, Leave it to Beaver -like TV show, Pleasantville , where they are astonished to find that they must pretend to be two of the show’s main characters, Bud and Mary Sue Parker. David tells Jennifer that they must stay “in character,” but Jennifer soon has sex with a boy who didn’t even know there was such a thing. He immediately changes from black and white into color. In fact, at lover’s lane a bright-red apple hangs from a black and white tree. Slowly, as citizens reject their scripted lifestyles and indulge different passions, they, and even various aspects of their surroundings, change from black and white into color. Of course, stodgy members of the town resist these changes as destructive to Pleasantville’s moral values and they remain black and white for a while, but the apple has been eaten—by the film’s end everything and everyone is now in vivid Technicolor. Although along with these unleashed passions the town now also knows racism, riots, and adultery, the author’s perspective is unmistakably clear: the freedom to indulge passion is preferable over a scripted/determined existence—even if that freedom results in suffering.

How to Keep Your Faith When You Lose Confidence in a Local Church

“The problem comes when one of these ‘believers’ feels socially slighted or pushed out. Maybe she feels the pastor is more distant than he was in the past, or her overall friendships have grown colder, and her sense of belonging in a particular church waivers at the relational level. Then she finds that her ‘faith’ crumbles to the dust as she turns away from God altogether. How can we guard ourselves (and one another) from mistaking a sense of belonging within a community to genuine faith in God?”

Theistic Foundation of Science

Given all of the assumptions above, there are still a few pieces missing. Is it possible to understand the world? This actually entails two assumptions that work together to make science possible. First, do our senses and minds accurately perceive reality? How do we know that is the case? One could argue we can trust our senses because everyone seems to perceive the same phenomena. However, that would only demonstrate the uniformity of human experience, not the accuracy of our perceptions. A further and related assumption is whatever order or structure we assume exists in nature is accessible and comprehensible to the human mind.

Believers should become informed

Christians should answer the many objections, misconceptions, distortion of facts, and excuses as part of their witness, as the apostles did in the first century. Believers should become informed in doctrine, the history of their faith, philosophy, logic, and other disciplines as they relate to Christianity broadly and the gospel specifically. These tools must be used wisely and graciously, so that the way to faith in Jesus can become clear for every generation (Eph. 4:29).
