Wheaton Conference 2018 | C.S. Lewis Institute

Dr. Jerry Root, our plenary speaker, will be offering six lectures over the course of the conference on the theme of “Communicating the Gospel: C.S. Lewis Style.” If you’ve never heard Dr. Root, you’re in for a treat. His passionate, engaging, and thoughtful presentation of important truths has made him a favorite professor of Wheaton College students for years. He has been studying C. S. Lewis and a constellation of subjects related to Lewis since 1970. Both his M.Div. thesis and Ph.D. dissertation were about C.S. Lewis. Dr. Root has taught college and university courses on C.S. Lewis continuously since 1980.

How Satan Gets a Hold on You

No. Because when it comes to good and evil, God wants us “to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil” (Romans 16:19). Our best protection against demons is less preoccupation with them and more preoccupation with God — less understanding of deception and more understanding of truth.

Reason and Logic flow from God's Being

The Laws of Logic: Laws of thought and reason that are immaterial, aspatial, universal, obligatory, necessary, immutable, and absolute. Some academics identify them as the laws of thought, the laws of truth, or the laws of reason. Various scholars strongly prefer to name them the laws of logic because they are independent of human minds and are ubiquitous throughout all experience. All rational thinking (and communication) presupposes and uses the laws of logic. The Law of Identity (LOI) is A=A. The most well-known law is the Law of Non-contradiction (LNC): A cannot be A and Non-A at the same time in the same way (A~~A). A man cannot be his own father. The laws of logic “are basic principles of reasoning” (Frame: CVT). The laws of logic reflect the nature and mind of the God of the Bible; thus, they have ontological grounding—that is, they are grounded in the very nature of truth itself and cannot be reduced to human convention, opinion or psychology. Without these laws, knowledge and rational thinking are impossible. To deny the laws of logic, one must use these laws in one’s attempt to deny them.

The Courage of an American Pastor

Being the pastor of a parish requires courage, but the nature of that courage is going to differ depending on where that parish is in the world.    In many parts of the Middle East, Africa and Asia, courage is a stark matter of risking death to celebrate Mass and to stand up with your flock.  This is the courage of the martyrs, willing to shed blood just for wearing a collar and saying ‘yes’ to the question, “are you a follower of Jesus?” May God give these pastors the strength and protection they need to have that courage.   In other places, including certain parts of the United States, it takes courage for a pastor to publicly adhere to the teachings of the Bible and the Church.  Pastors today run the risk of being slandered, mocked, shunned, and even persecuted by those who believe that Jesus is not only irrelevant, but offensive.  May God give them the strength and protection they need to have that courage.   But there is another kind of courage that a pastor must have daily that is often overlooked and unappreciated, one that seems almost insignificant compared to the examples above.

Wilberforce Weekend 2018

The Wilberforce Weekend is the annual “family reunion” for the Colson Center and is rapidly becoming the premier gathering designed to equip believers in Christian worldview and prepare them for cultural renewal. Highlighting the weekend will be the inspirational recognition of a Christian leader with the Wilberforce Award on Saturday evening — followed by the official commissioning of the 2018 class of Colson Fellows on Sunday morning.

Bible Contradiction? What is the human life span?

This last trip was more of a struggle to get over the jet lag…I think it might be a deeper exhaustion from the preparation from the trip, the trip itself and the amount of teaching. I am trying to still recover or at least it feels that way to me. But I’m starting back my routine. That’s crazy how two individuals in your small group is reading Joyce Meyer for their devotionals…I just prayed for them in regards to that to read more solid material. Sometimes as a Pastor I realize ministry must be seen as a long road with people to grow more solid…

If You Ever Feel Lonely As a Leader, Read This

I milled around the room looking for my name, feeling increasingly out of place. Finally, at a table on the opposite side of the room, I found my name. I rallied in my heart that the Lord must have a special plan for me to meet and connect with the others assigned to my table. I took my seat and pulled out my cell phone as I nervously waited for my tablemates.

How do we Know who Wrote the Gospels?

It’s common to hear scholars suggest that we don’t know who wrote the four gospels. They say that the gospels are anonymous, and that the church didn’t add titles till the end of the second century. It is true that none of the gospels tell us the author’s name in the body of the text. The closest is John’s Gospel where the writer states, “This (the one whom Jesus loves) is the disciple who testifies to these things, and who wrote them down” (Jn 21:24).

Apologetics Restored my Faith

But I was what you would call a “nominal Christian.” I would go to church weekly, attend every Bible study, and even serve in many capacities. But looking back, those were empty times. I knew the stories of the Bible, the head knowledge of who God was. I had the typical Christian education: God created the universe and everything in it, Man fell into sin, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, came down, died and rose again for our sins because He loved us. While that isn’t wrong, that was the extent of my faith. I was living comfortably in my Christianity and my faith was never being challenged so I had no reason to defend it.

5 Reasons Why You Should Teach Apologetics To Your Children

Christians today are facing more challenges than ever. The Poached Egg exists to equip Christians to meet those challenges and be more confident in their faith and become more effective witnesses for Christ. If you find these articles and posts useful, please consider partnering with me in 2018 to continue this work that God has laid on my heart. As someone once said, the Gospel is free, but someone has to pay for the plumbing. You can become a monthly partner for just as little as $5 a month (that’s only $60 a year), the price of a gourmet cup of coffee. Special one time gifts are welcome and encouraged as well. Three Keys to Thriving at College | The Stream

Before going to college, take stock of any intellectual roadblocks to the faith you may be struggling with. It could be materialistic evolution, the problem of evil (how a good God can allow it), or the Bible’s reliability. Thankfully, there are good answers to the common objections to Christianity you’ll encounter from your biology or philosophy professor, or the skeptic down the hall. Either study these issues in advance, or have a pastor friend or parent you can call upon. Christianity is a faith that’s rooted in actual events that occurred in history. It can withstand even intense scrutiny.

Three Powerful Passages that Prove Jesus is God

There are extensive scholarly debates about the claim that Jesus is God. My goal in this post is not to enter into those debates. Here, the goal is simply to highlight three of my favorite New Testament passages that teach the deity of Jesus. These three passages are easy to remember, and share, with those who ask (see 1 Peter 3:15 ).

36 Why God Gives Us More Than We Can Handle

God certainly does give us more than we can handle. And he does it “to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead” (2 Corinthians 1:9). If you’re facing some overwhelming adversary or adversity and you wonder how God could possibly deliver and work it for your good (Romans 8:28), then take heart. He is granting you the joy of experiencing the reality of Judges 7, Romans 8, and 2 Corinthians 1.

37 Do You Fear a Day of Rest?

We work without rest to arrive at some future rest without work. But that’s a bad deal on both sides. Humans weren’t made to work without rest. But even if you burn the midnight oil, scorching the candle on both ends, then what? You arrive at your retirement — a rest with no work. And slowly you begin to realize that too is a nightmare. Humans weren’t made for that either. Jeremiah shows us what such a life looks like when the Lord says, “My people have committed two evils: they have forsaken me, the fountain of living waters, and hewed out cisterns for themselves, broken cisterns that can hold no water” (Jeremiah 2:13).

How We Should (and Shouldn’t) Relate to Islam

“We have made safety, comfort, and convenience into criteria we use to evaluate whether we will do what God has asked us. He  is  drawing Muslims to himself, but he’s doing it through the persistent witness of those willing to say the gospel is worth more than their lives, and to take it to them.” — Zane Pratt

The Unforgivable Sins of ‘13 Reasons Why’

The season finale was a giveaway. To put a blunt point on it, if your goal as a show is to treat mental health and suicide with sensitivity and honesty, you don’t use self-harm as a tease for season two. You don’t turn the possible death of a kid into a suspense device. You don’t use suicide as a way to keep people guessing. That’s a disgusting, arguably immoral decision, especially when it happens in the same episode as Hannah Baker’s very real, very graphic death. If you’re playing it both ways, you’re not playing fair, and if you’re not playing fair, it’s hypocritical to play yourself off as the show that’s “starting a dialogue” about suicide. 13 Reasons Why didn’t want to start a dialogue about mental health. It wanted to start a dialogue about itself.

50 Shane Claiborne Was Among the Christian Leaders and Activists Arrested for #DemandtheBan Protest

Toomey was chosen, according to the website, because he co-sponsored a 2013 bill to expand background checks for gun sales. He was also endorsed by anti-gun violence organizations, which helped him win re-election. Therefore, the coalition decided that, “It’s time for Senator Toomey to earn his reputation as a national leader to prevent gun violence. Since he has refused to meet with Demand the Ban organizers to discuss a ban on assault weapons, we are mobilizing people from Pennsylvania and throughout the United States to bring the Demand the Ban to Senator Toomey’s office.”
