The Beer Commercial That Has a Lesson for Christians

Recently, Heineken beer company produced a five-minute commercial titled, “Worlds Apart.” Far from the usual beer sales pitch, this commercial offers a different kind of message—one that frankly I think would make the world a better place. (Even typing those words feels a bit cheesy … but hang with me.) The commercial is not about a newfound social status or getting that person who is way out of our league. In fact, the commercial is not even about drinking. It’s about something much closer to home—understanding. (OK, before we get going here—a quick disclaimer: This article is not about

Where was God when that happened? - a review

Written for Christians thinking or revisiting this question, Christopher Ash highlights six different views people might have around this question, then dives into the biblical picture around this vast topic. He rightly says that this is ‘a question asked by any thoughtful person’ (8) which makes it helpful to focus on at any stage of life. Yet he constantly tries to push us beyond our narrow human thinking to help us ‘get hold of what it means for God to be God’ (15).

Is the Christian Worldview Logical?

Many people have the impression that Christians live in two “worlds”—the world of faith and the world of reason. The world of faith is the realm that Christians live in on Sunday morning, or the world to which they refer when asked about spiritual or moral matters. However, it would seem that Christians live in the world of reason throughout the rest of the week, when dealing with practical, everyday matters. After all, do we really need to believe in the Bible to put gasoline in the car, or to balance our checkbook?

TV Series on Netflix Worth Checking Out

Longmire. This program has been called a “neo-Western,” but it has much more in common with “The Rifleman” or “Dragnet” than it does with anything on TV today. Perhaps because this program started out on cable and then moved to Netflix, its DNA is more wholesome than that of most Netflix original programming. (A key story arc reaches fruition when the widowed Sheriff Walt Longmire refuses to have sex with his new love interest. The taciturn Longmire explains himself simply: He and his wife had not had sex until they were married.) The final season of “Longmire” is “in the can” and will release in September, and it will be interesting to see how a lot of unanswered questions get resolved. Till then, it’s great to see “old hands” such as Lou Diamond Phillips and A. Martinez, not to mention Australian actor Robert Taylor as Walt Longmire, do some of the finest acting of their careers.

The Signs That You're Going Through a Quarter-Life Crisis

We don’t need to strive to be something we’re not. I have learned that life doesn’t need to be a competition. It’s about becoming the best versions of ourselves. Stewarding our calling inevitably requires us to muster up the courage to say no to the expectations of the world but yes to our Caller. This knowledge has helped me achieve peace and a much greater understanding of my purpose.

Correct, Not Politically Correct: How Same Sex Marriage Hurts Everyone Why not legalize same-sex marriage? Who could it possibly hurt? Using sound reasoning and evidence—not religion—award-winning author Frank Turek shows that everyone will be hurt including children, the nation, and even homosexuals themselves. Turek provides concise answers to objections about equal rights, discrimination, and being born a certain way, and he exposes the real reason gay activists are trying to impose same-sex marriage on the country without a single vote from the people. Turek’s message is direct but respectful. It is correct, not politically correct. And it is a message that we must not ignore. For details, see .

It's Time for Christians to Start Taking Climate Change Seriously

Living in a post-truth world can be difficult for those of us who simply do not understand the uncanny ability so many people have to simply dismiss facts. Working as a journalist covering climate change, global warming and clean technology for over a decade, this has been a specific problem I have had to deal with. People all over the world, both in positions of power and not, seem to believe that there is room for debate on the issues of climate change, humanity’s involvement and the need to transition to a low-carbon future.

Christians Should Talk About Feminism More

We need our girls and women to be people who are thriving and alive. I want my daughters to be confident and joyful young women. I don’t think this is too much to ask or expect. In the words of Edmund Burke, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” I believe we are living in a time where for too long we have chosen to do nothing. No ruffling of feathers or making of waves. But sometimes waves need to be made and feathers need to be ruffled. Sitting politely and quietly will only get us more of the same result, and that is not acceptable. Let’s beat drums and yell loudly so the generations to come know that they were fought for, so they know they are loved and valued and worth every moment of that fight.

6 Date Ideas for This Weekend That Literally Don’t Cost Anything

I remember an expensive first date when I was in my early 20s. I was introduced to this girl and I took her out to the Cheesecake Factory. The atmosphere was pleasant and conversation was fine. After I paid the high-priced bill we started walking to our cars. She asked, “What kind of car do you drive?” Immediately, big yellow flags went up in my mind. I told her I drive a Honda Civic. I asked her the same question in turn. She said, “I drive a BMW!”

Is Your Bookshelf Racist?

My dream has always been to live in a house full of books. I saw one of those rolling library-ladders in a movie when I was a kid and always dreamed of riding on one someday. For Mother's Day, Black Lives Matter Is Bailing Black Women Out of Jail

This Mother’s Day, at least 30 women will get the gift of freedom thanks to Black Lives Matter activists, who are raising funds for what they’re calling National Mama’s Bail Out Day. The women in question haven’t been convicted of any crimes—they just can’t afford to pay the bonds or fines that will let them go be with their families until their trial dates.

The Lie Too Many People Believe About Purity

I can admit that I avoided purity for a long time, just for the fear that if I failed at it God would be mad at me, God would punish me, God would be disappointed in me. I’ve been learning, though, that this is not the kind of God  we serve. In Galatians, it is made clear to us as believers that it is impossible to be made right with the Lord by our works (by keeping the law, by “being pure” through our own efforts, by being “good” people), but that it is only Christ who can give us our salvation. Our obedience can never “earn” us our salvation, because it is Christ who has done all of the work (and thank God for that).

Torn Emotions: A Visit With Nabeel Qureshi | RZIM

My dearest Nabeel, I love you, dear friend, and my heart aches to see you leaving this world so soon. But if it is of any comfort, you have so far lived the same number of years as our Lord and Redeemer. What is more, the world is a mess. We are still trapped by the fears of living in a world immersed in hate and living for matter, greed, pride, and violence. You will be freed to the joy of life where there are no more fears, no more tears, no more hate, no more bloodshed, because you will be with the One who has already shed his blood for you, where love is supreme, grace abounds, and the consummate joy is of the soul. The smile of God awaits you: “Well done.”

What Do the Non-Canonical Gospels Say About Jesus - Part 3 (Podcast) | Cold Case Christianity

In this blast from the past, J. Warner finishes his examination of the ancient non-canonical writings to see what they say about Jesus. In this episode, J. Warner examines some of the better known (and more controversial) non-canonical texts: The Gospel of Judas, the Gospel of Thomas, and the Gospel of Philip. What does the non-canonical tradition tell us about the true life of Jesus? Why would these writers twist the truth in the first place? Can we have confidence in the New Testament canon?

How Naturalism Rots Science from the Head Down | Evolution News

We will get there eventually. But perhaps not in this culture; perhaps in a later one.  Science can throw so many resources into protecting metaphysical naturalism that it begins to decline. Periods of great discovery are often followed by centuries of doldrums. These declines are usually based on philosophical declines. The prevalence of, for example, fake physics, shows that we are in the midst of just such a philosophical decline. It’s a stark choice for our day.

Weak Moms, Strong God

Each mother carries her own unique fears, anxieties, and struggles, but we all desire to be the mom that our children need, don’t we? These burdens and fears will either consume us and create perpetual anxiety within us or, by God’s grace, they will lead us to the one who is not only in control, but knows exactly what our children need — and loves them more than we ever could.

Case-Making 101: The Christian Worldview and the problem of doubt, evil and suffering

What do you do when you have questions and doubts about God or your faith? Questions can be good if it moves us forward to finding answers. I had a lot of questions about Christianity and I did not do anything about that for years except to become a doubtful skeptic. Doubt because of unanswered questions can be a terrible thing if it causes us to settle into apathy or worse.

Here’s the thing: There is no fear in love. When you understand how deeply God loves you, it will simplify your life. It will illuminate, protect, and energize you. Bask in the light of God’s love. Let it save you from a lifetime of fear.

A Powerful Proof For God's Existence

When Mother’s Day Feels Like a Minefield

Most churches try to honor mothers in some way, but rather than attracting women with its special focus, legions either stay home from church on that day or leave their church service filled with resentment and pain. Many women have told me why. Single mothers describe it as momentary attention that lapses into invisibility again once the day passes, leaving them struggling to raise their kids alone. Bonnie, a mother of a beautiful adopted daughter, tells of one Mother’s Day when her pastor invited children to hand out chocolate kisses to their mothers. He was very specific about who qualified: They were to give their candy “not to the women who are like a mother to you” but only to “the woman who gave birth to you.” Bonnie was horrified and actually shouted out, “Or who has adopted you!” Sandra lost her own mother early and was never able to have children of her own despite her great longing. On Mother’s Day, with neither a mother nor children, she tells me she feels “like I have been abandoned by God’s people.” Shari, who tragically lost her daughter to cancer, finds her church celebrations devastating, like “salt in a wound.

New Book Debunks Common Myths in ID-Evolution Debate | Evolution News

Barczeska  turns finally to media discourse on the debate. She begins by correctly observing, “Even though reporters label new court cases ‘Scopes II,’ the debate has changed in form and content since the 1920s.” (p. 37) But how does the media perpetuate these old myths and stereotypes? Reviewing numerous examples, she notes that in media stories, “There is strong correlation between intelligent design and words identifying it as religious.” (p. 282) Yet her examples show that, “Whereas ID is commonly classified in the U.S. press as a religious belief or religious approach to scientific questions, evolution is for the most part presented as belonging securely within the domain of SCIENCE.” (p. 286) Insightfully, Barczewska  points out that different types of “framing” in different news articles can lead to stories that only satisfy some of the concerns of certain segments of readers. Thus, she notes:

Cold-Case Christianity Teaching Outlines | Cold Case Christianity

We get requests every day from people just like you who are trying to teach the material from Cold-Case Christianity: A Homicide Detective Investigates the Claims of the Gospels . If you’re a pastor, small group leader, or teacher, we’ve assembled everything you’ll need to effectively communicate the case for the reliability of the New Testament Gospels. If you’ve ever had to make a presentation of this kind, you know the important questions:

The Deity of Christ in the Gospel of Mark

There are some who think the deity of Christ was a later invention that developed by the end of the first century. As evidence for this position, they assert that the Gospel written first—the Gospel of Mark—has a low view of Jesus, while the Gospel written last—the Gospel of John—has a high view of Jesus. Therefore, Jesus started out as a man in Mark’s Gospel but became God by the time John’s Gospel was written.

3 Reasons Your Kids May Eventually Think Christianity is Worthless

My daughter, age 7, has always been very generous with her allowance and came running down the stairs with a Ziploc bag of piggy bank money the morning after the collection was announced. Brad Pitt Opens Up About His Charismatic Christian Upbringing and Overcoming Addiction

Pitt said he was told that “rock shows are the devil” but said that going to concerts almost helped him relate to the church experience: “I realized that the reverie and the joy and exuberance, even the aggression, I was feeling at the rock show was the same thing at the revival. Every Good Church Is Messy

God’s plan to make his grace known to the world is not for a bunch of perfect people to live together in perfect harmony, but rather, for sinful people to cling desperately to Jesus, even in the hardest instances. God’s light may not shine in every corner of the church, but it still shines all around. When the church looks to Jesus for help in our weaknesses, powerful things can happen.

The Horror of Human Embryo Jewelry

Let’s call everyone, all the guilty, the people that we once were, to turn from their wicked ways and trust Jesus. Let’s speak into the confusion of our culture with the truth that a child’s death is never sentimental and never precious. And let’s help rescue children who are perishing, rather than turning them into an accessory for their parents to wear.

The Ongoing Struggle against the Culture to Defend Intrinsic Human Value | Stand to Reason

After greeting his wife and other relatives with her at their home, Hilarion begs her to “take care of the little one,” their child, promising to send money as soon as he is paid. Then, referring to Alis expecting another child very soon, he writes, “if it is a boy, let it be, if it is a girl, cast it out.” But then after this rather blunt order, he continues by expressing his unaltered tender affection for Alis: “How can I forget you? I beg you then not to be anxious.” Obviously, the man was not a monster and was capable of tender feelings. Nor was he unusual for the time in his attitude about infant exposure. That is precisely the point to note: the practice of discarding infants shortly after birth, and before they had been accepted by the father as family members, was so much a feature of the culture of the Roman period that many otherwise caring people seem to have felt little reluctance about it. This contrasts with Roman-era attitudes toward killing or discarding children after they had been accepted into their families. That was condemned.
