Even in Canada, Conservative Churches Are Growing

With fewer evangelicals and more secular surroundings than their brethren in the United States, Canada’s mainline denominations collectively lost half of their members over the past 50 years. Last year, a team of sociologists suggested that conservative theological beliefs—including emphasis on Scripture as the “actual word of God” and belief in the power of prayer—may be the saving grace keeping attendance up at 9 of 22 Ontario churches studied.

The Resurrection is unbelievable...unless, of course, it's true

The historian is bound to face the question: once Jesus had been crucified, why would anyone say that He was Israel’s Messiah? Nobody said that about Judas the Galilean after his revolt ended in failure in AD 6. Nobody said it of Simon bar-Giora after his death at the end of Titus’s triumph in AD 70. Nobody said it about bar-Kochbar after his defeat and death in 135. On the contrary, where messianic movements tried to carry on after the death of their would-be messiah, their most important task was to find another messiah. The fact that the early Christians did not do that but continued against all precedent to regard Jesus Himself as Messiah, despite outstanding alternative candidates such as the righteous, devout, and well-respected James, Jesus’ own brother, is evidence that demands an explanation…The rise of early Christianity, and the shape it took in two central and vital respects, thus presses upon the historian the question for an explanation. The early Christian retained the Jewish belief in resurrection, but both modified it and made it more sharp and precise. They retained the Jewish belief in a coming Messiah but redrew it drastically around Jesus Himself.

7 The Briefing 05-16-17 -

From a Christian worldview perspective, there are several dimensions that jump out at us almost immediately. The first is, yes, there really is a fundamental moral change taking place in this country. That’s something that we knew long before this research dated May 11 was released. But what’s particularly interesting here is the fact that we have documentation that we have reached a new moral stage. That is to say there is an emerging consensus on the part of Americans on many of these issues, and it is not a conservative consensus. It is a newly liberal consensus. The second thing we need to note is this: we have often been told that we are watching a fundamental reshaping of this country, in some ways a new conservative posture on many issues as over against liberal trajectories that we were told had been checked. But what makes this research so important, especially year-by-year, is that what it indicates is that on no major moral issue, save one, has there actually been any actual movement over the last 30 years in terms of a conservative direction. On virtually every issue, especially every single issue related to sex, gender, and sexual morality, Americans have been moving steadily to the left in a more liberal or permissive direction.

Fake News Versus Good News

In the above post from  Thinking Matters , three steps to determine if a news source is trustworthy are provided. These steps are the following: 1. Is the source motivated by truth? 2. Is the source open to scrutiny both from within and without? 3. Does it matter if the news the source is providing is true or false? The gospel is then examined using these steps, and the conclusion made is that Jesus offers good news and offers it reliably. You can read the entire post  here . Stand firm in Christ, Chase

What to Do When Life Gets Really Hard

Perseverance is key. With any difficult situation or trial we are faced with, we can use it as an opportunity or challenge to simply go deeper with our relationship with God, holding steadfast to our God and giving everything we have to Him. In fact, when we are faced with a trial, we can see it as a wonderful blessing and opportunity to surrender even further in our lives, examining each area of our lives, particularly related to the trial and giving God permission to completely purify our hearts. That way, by choosing perseverance, not only do we come out of the trial with greater character and hope, but we also grow stronger in our relationships with God.

Torn Emotions: A Visit With Nabeel Qureshi | RZIM

My dearest Nabeel, I love you, dear friend, and my heart aches to see you leaving this world so soon. But if it is of any comfort, you have so far lived the same number of years as our Lord and Redeemer. What is more, the world is a mess. We are still trapped by the fears of living in a world immersed in hate and living for matter, greed, pride, and violence. You will be freed to the joy of life where there are no more fears, no more tears, no more hate, no more bloodshed, because you will be with the One who has already shed his blood for you, where love is supreme, grace abounds, and the consummate joy is of the soul. The smile of God awaits you: “Well done.”

What Rob Bell Gets Right and Wrong About the Bible

Such views fail not only an orthodox understanding of Scripture, but a literary one as well. Despite his call to read the Bible “literately,” Bell ignores his own advice. The Bible clearly states that Christ wasn’t killed against his will (John 10:18) and that he claimed to be the exclusive path to relationship with God (John 14:6). Further, his disciples understood Christ’s death to fulfill God’s plan (Acts 2:23; Gal. 1:4). The biblical writers insist Scripture isn’t merely a human product but the result of divine inspiration, unveiling the hope of salvation through faith in Jesus Christ (2 Tim. 3:15–16; 2 Pet. 1:21; Heb. 1:1–3).

The Best Discoveries Begin as Problems: How to Read Proverbs

If it weren’t for God’s free gift of wisdom (Proverbs 2:6; James 3:17), we would all be trapped in sinful folly. This is why Proverbs 3:5 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts. But this mercy was blood-bought. Old Testament sacrifices foreshadowed the bloody payment. Jesus paid it. And Paul made clear in Romans 3:25 that his payment covered the sins of Old Testament believers as well as ours.

Why Don’t the Gospel Writers Tell the Same Story?

These questions bothered me. I knew it could mean the eternal destiny of my soul if I got it wrong. So I was determined to be open-minded and seek truth. That led me into apologetics, which I had no interest in before. But even that wasn’t enough. I quickly realized that I was just seeking the answers I wanted to find, which led to further doubts and more investigation. I was studying the Resurrection for my PhD at the time, initially just wanting to find another way to prove it. But I became interested in approaching the Resurrection differently, as a historian. If we subjected the resurrection of Jesus to strictly controlled scrutiny using the historical method, what would it look like? What would it yield for us? My goal was to answer these questions.

19 Reasonable Faith Campaign | Reasonable Faith

The film version of Lee Strobel’s The Case for Christ recently opened in theaters across the nation. A hardened atheist, Strobel undertook a two year investigation to see whether the resurrection of Jesus Christ could hold up to scrutiny. The film dramatizes how he abandoned his atheism for Christianity when confronted with the facts, like those Reasonable Faith offers through our debates, books, and online materials. I had the privilege of being interviewed by Lee on the historicity of Jesus’ empty tomb during the writing of his influential book.

Why Apologists Need to "Lower the Bar"

For instance, a few years ago I spoke at an apologetics conference at a local church. The event sponsor was fresh out of seminary and excited to train others. He was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, but unfortunately he gave a lengthy talk to lay people on the cosmological argument, and because he used “big” words and failed to relate his case personally to their lives, the audience checked out. Even though he was well intentioned, sadly, many people left the event with less interest in apologetics than when it began.

Don’t Hide Those Gray Hairs

And if older women are going to teach the younger faithfully, they must themselves “be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good” (Titus 2:3). This means learning gracious ways and manners, conducting ourselves with dignity, practicing godly conversation, and learning how to deflect gossip while urging others to do the same. It means setting an example of edifying others on social media and knowing when to walk away. It means not being controlled by passions and lusts of the flesh, including the desire to look perfect on Pinterest and Facebook. It means being diligent stewards of our time and responsibilities at home and in the church. In short, it means embracing maturity, rather than trying to delay its onset.

Here's Why You Need to Read "Forensic Faith" by J. Warner Wallace Right Now - Book Review

I was a bit puzzled that she didn’t seem to connect the dots—that the faith she had handed down to her daughter was void of some important answers. And if she didn't think they were important enough to learn, why should her daughter?  Since then, I have discovered that some of the toughest objections to the discipline of apologetics come from within the church itself. Time and time again I’ve heard claims like, “I don’t need apologetics because I don’t have any doubts,” or “I don’t want my intellect to get in the way of my heart,” or “You can’t argue anyone into the kingdom.”

Q & A with Dr. Craig: Does God Cause People to Do Evil?

Dr. Craig, thank you for all that you do to help us understand the God of the Bible in face of the difficult issues we all face. As a follower of Christ, I am troubled by some passages in Scripture which seem to indicate that God not only allows evil (the treatment of which you have addressed many times) but even more troubling, that God actually CAUSES evil. I am referring to the accounts both in the OT and NT: from the hardening of Pharaoh's heart in Genesis, to John 13:27b when Jesus tells Judas "What you do, do quickly" (seems to be no choice in the matter for poor Judas), to the account in Revelation 17:15 - 17 - in particular, the first part of vs 16-17: "And the ten horns which you saw, and the beast, these will hate the harlot and will make her desolate and naked, and will eat her flesh and will burn her up with fire. FOR GOD HAS PUT IT IN THEIR HEARTS (my emphasis) to execute His purpose by having a common purpose, and by giving their kingdom to the beast, until the words of God are fulfilled." Does "it" in that verse refer to all the horrific things they do - hating, makin

HBO Is Making a 'Young Pope' Spinoff

Jude Law’s political, edgy take on the holy father of the Roman Catholic Church—HBO’s miniseries  The Young Pope — was a critical hit. And in some ways, it was important . If it proved nothing else, though, it showed us that a fictionalized pontiff makes for a more compelling character than anyone suspected. So HBO is making another Pope-based miniseries. This one, Vulture reports , is called The New Pope (because if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it).

People Who Talk About God When Applying for Loans Are Less Likely to Pay Them Back

A new study from three big-brain economists—Oded Netzer and Alain Lemaire from Columbia and Michal Herzenstein of the University of Delaware—put their undoubtedly intelligent heads together to figure out a tough question: How can you tell whether or not someone who’s asking for a loan will actually pay it off? They found a lot of interesting results in their study but let’s highlight one in particular: People who invoke the name of the Almighty while applying are among the least likely to be good for it.

Evidential Apologetics: What is it?

The term "apologetics" comes from the Greek, apologia , which means "defense." Apologetics is the systematic study of how one can best defend one's beliefs. Christian apologetics, specifically, focuses on presenting the core tenets of the Christian faith so as to make a case for their truthfulness and answer objections raised by unbelievers. Simply put, Christian apologetics is offering a defense for what Christians believe.

Book Review: Dictionary of Christianity and Science

It should be no secret science plays an inordinately large role on modern culture. As I've noted before , scientific advancements have allowed human beings banish diseases that were once fatal, create new materials in the lab that outrival nature, and generally control and command their world in ways that had heretofore been thought impossible. In short, the last 150 years of scientific discovery have changed everything about how humans live and interact with their world. Because of these great successes, societal attitudes toward science have become distorted. People place science on a pedestal, believing that if a claim is scientific, it will be unbiased and more reliable than other forms of knowledge. Science and faith are seen as foes and atheists will challenge Christians, claiming scientific facts are incrementally undermining Christian beliefs. In reality the war between Christianity and science is a myth and the recently released Dictionary of Christianity and Science goes a long way toward helping to dispel that myth as the fraud it is. Essential areas they need to be ready to engage in during college: How do I know God really exists? Is truth relative? Who was Jesus, and did he rise from the dead? Can you trust the Bible in the 21st century? How do I have helpful spiritual conversations? How can Jesus be the only way to God? If God is good, then why is there so much evil? I cover these and other practical questions like dating, sex, dealing with doubt, and how to resolve conflict with roommates as well. Because Christianity is true, it applies to every area of life. So I try to cover all the main questions that students have to engage during college.

The Children God Gives the Childless

In this instance, we need a look at the bigger picture. When God gives this command/blessing to Adam and Eve in Genesis 1:28, it directly follows the verse explaining humanity’s creation in God’s own image. More than work, marriage, or parenting, our ultimate purpose in this life is to reflect God. As John Piper explains, “God made humans in his image so that the world would be filled with reflectors of God. Images of God. Seven billion statues of God. So that nobody would miss the point of creation.” God’s command and blessing to Adam and Eve is to continue this purpose and this reflection by conceiving more “statues of God,” each a means of highlighting the presence and character of the Creator.
