2 What Does “Gospel” Really Mean? | Cold Case Christianity

I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting the one who called you by the grace of Christ and are turning to a different gospel- which is really no gospel at all. Evidently some people are throwing you into confusion and are trying to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

Digging for Truth in the 'Gay Christian' Debates

We can't ignore the "gay Christian" debate. For too long, I've seen pastors avoid the "politically charged" same-sex marriage issue. From the pulpit, they say things like, "Don't worry about marriage out there. Just defend God's design for marriage by living out yours well." These pastors have good intentions. But in their dodge ball efforts to not offend liberal members of their congregations, they have created a gaping hole in theological understanding of sexuality and marriage, especially among young Christians.

Outrage growing over Christian woman's sentence to hang

Sudanese President Omar Bashir, an Islamist who seized power during a 1989 military coup, said his country will implement Islam more strictly now that the non-Muslim south is gone. A number of Sudanese have been convicted of apostasy in recent years, but they have all escaped execution by recanting their faith. Religious thinker and politican Mahmoud Mohammed Taha — a vocal critic of Nimeiri — was sentenced to death after his conviction for apostasy and was executed at the age of 76 in 1985.

Beyond Star Trek

I just finished listening to Lawrence Krauss’ “Beyond Star Trek” the sequel to his book "The Physics of Star Trek." Once again, it was a fascinating book. He talks about quantum computing, as a possible means for machine intelligence or AI. He did a great job explaining it too. Overall, the book was great.

11 EQUIP, Christian Articles, Bible Answer Man | CRI

Are there apostles and prophets today? While it has become increasingly popular to believe in the restoration of “end-time” apostles and prophets, the Bible clearly does not support this notion. First, to address this question we must first learn to scale the language barrier. In other words, the issue is not so much the words […]

When the Not-Yet Married Meet: Dating to Display Jesus

So says the media. Girls, stop expecting guys to make any formal attempt at winning your affections. Don’t sit around waiting for a boy to make you a priority, communicate his intentions, or even call you on the phone. Exclusivity and intentionality are ancient rituals, things of the past, and misplaced hopes.

Christian in Sudan sentenced to death for faith; 'I'm just praying,' husband says

"The fact that a woman could be sentenced to death for her religious choice, and to flogging for being married to a man of an allegedly different religion, is abhorrent and should never be even considered," Manar Idriss, Amnesty International's Sudan researcher, said in a statement.

14
Grace to You

Third, people have seldom realized how versatile Jesus’ pattern for prayer is. Each phrase reflects the relationship between Creator and creature, and each one demonstrates an attitude and spirit of prayer. Similarly, we can variously outline it to show God’s glory versus our need, the threefold purpose of prayer (hallow His name, usher in His kingdom, and do His will), or to present our concerns from a past, present, and future standpoint.

15
Are You Called?

These days, many persons think of careers rather than callings. The biblical challenge to “consider your call” should be extended from the call to salvation to the call to the ministry. John Newton, famous for writing “Amazing Grace,” once remarked that “None but He who made the world can make a Minister of the Gospel.” Only God can call a true minister, and only he can grant the minister the gifts necessary for service. But the great promise of Scripture is that God does call ministers, and presents these servants as gifts to the Church. One key issue here is a common misunderstanding about the will of God. Some models of evangelical piety imply that God’s will is something difficult for us to accept. We sometimes confuse this further by talking about “surrendering” to the will of God. As Paul makes clear in Romans 12:2, the will of God is good, worthy of eager acceptance, and perfect. Those called by God to preach will be given a desire to preach as well as the gifts of preaching. Beyond this, the God-called preacher will feel the same compulsion as the great Apostle, who said, “W

Why Youth Ministers Need to Be Theologians

If anything the world bears down with even greater ferocity on the fledging faith of Christian youth. So why should we expect less theological rigor from our youth pastors who serve them through teaching, counseling, and more? Every youth minister needs to be a theologian, whether formally or informally equipped to handle God's Word with integrity and care.

Baptists, Just Without the Baptisms

Most telling, perhaps, were the task force's conclusions on the denomination's "Next Generation Problem." Although our churches have increasingly provided programs for children, students, and young adults," they wrote, "we are not being effective in winning and discipling the next generation to follow Christ." In terms of baptisms, they're right: In 2012, 60 percent of churches reported that they didn't baptize anyone aged 12 to 17, and 80 percent reported they had either zero or one baptism of someone aged 18-29. Although the report calls for pastors to "renew their focus" on young people, it's unclear how that's supposed to happen.

Boys on the bus are back

At The New York Times, Jill Abramson is out and Dean Baquet is in. On the same day across the pond, Natalie Nougayrede was so tired of personal attacks she quit her top post at Le Monde. The Gospel of Doubt

Dr. Craig: Doubt has done all of these wonderful things and yet, you know, I notice that doubt is never defined here in this blog. What do they mean by doubt? It is not simply the failure to believe something that leads to these positive results. If, by doubt, you mean something like skepticism, that doesn't produce any sort of positive beliefs. It is not at all clear what they mean here when they extol the virtues of doubt. I would wonder, too, Kevin, if they apply this to their own belief system. Do they apply the virtue of doubt to atheism? Or to their denial of God's existence? It is very easy to say that other people should doubt their worldviews while leaving your own view immune to self-examination and criticism. I've noticed this with people in the free thought community. They have a sort of skeptical dial that they can ratchet way up when it comes to Christian beliefs so that almost nothing could provide sufficient evidence for these, but when it comes to their own worldview and commitments they dial it way down so that they don't need to provide virtually any justification for their own beliefs in order for these to be rational.

Blood Work: How the Blood of Christ Accomplishes Our Salvation

Evangelical Christians often sing and preach about the blessed blood of Christ and the wonderful things it accomplishes for believers. To the uninformed ear, such language can convey the idea that Jesus’ blood had semi-magical qualities. Actually, Jesus’ blood was normal human blood, but the Bible refers to it in metaphorical terms to portray the many benefits that come to Christians because of Jesus’ death.

22 Apologetics 101: Why did The Big Bang Theory "irritate" Einstein? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

As we discussed yesterday, it is understandable why TV Producers look for controversial ideas like Sagan’s flawed “oscillating theory” but why do serious scientists indulge them? Why are so many tenured professors bent on overturning something as obvious as The Big Bang? As Lee Strobel points out in The Case for a Creator , Einstein was irritated by the idea of an expanding universe, Astronomer Athur Eddington called it “repugnant” and Phillip Morrison at MIT admitted he would, “like to reject it.”

They asked whether I was prepared to die as a Christian

NBC News has the story of a Nigerian Christian man who was shot by Boko Haram terrorists for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. This man’s name is Habila Adamu, and he was attacked by the same group of terrorists who recently abducted 200 Nigerian school girls. They broke into his home, shot him, and left him for dead all in full view of his wife and son. It’s a miracle that he is alive. It’s even more a miracle that he stood.

24 Minimal Facts Argument for the Resurrection of Jesus Christ - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The proposal that someone can resurrect after being dead for three days is often a very tough product to sell in todays’ westernized self-proclaimed intellectual cultural, which is primarily dominated by naturalists who claim that nothing can occur outside of the laws of nature. Of course, we Christians firmly hold to the idea that our Lord, Jesus of Nazareth, rose from the dead three days after being crucified. Some of us place faith in this fact solely based upon the reading of the Bible and others have read the Bible and have gone the extra mile to confirm the historical credibility of such a claim. Regardless of how you came to your faith in Christ and his resurrection, it is important that we assess our own beliefs by objectively viewing the facts to see how they reinforce or contradict our worldview.

6 Heretics Who Should Be Banned From Evangelicalism

“It not infrequently happens that something about the earth…may be known with the greatest certainty by reasoning or by experience, even by one who is not a Christian. It is too disgraceful and ruinous, though, and greatly to be avoided, that he [the non-Christian] should hear a Christian speaking so idiotically on these matters, and as if in accord with Christian writings, that he might say that he could scarcely keep from laughing when he saw how totally in error they are. In view of this and in keeping it in mind constantly while dealing with the book of Genesis, I have, insofar as I was able, explained in detail and set forth for consideration the meanings of obscure passages, taking care not to affirm rashly some one meaning to the prejudice of another and perhaps better explanation.”

26 If You Believe Atheism Is True, Then Atheism Is False - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

This is the conviction that the methods of science are the only reliable ways to secure knowledge of anything; that science’s description of the world is correct in its fundamentals; and that when “complete,” what science tells us will not be surprisingly different from what it tells us today…. Science provides all the significant truths about reality….. Being scientistic just means treating science as our exclusive guide to reality, to nature—both our own nature and everything else’s.

27 I Disagree With You = I Hate You - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Christians. Who do they think they are? Thinking they hold the market on truth. Who made them the arbiters of truth? They are all just a bunch of intolerant bigots. I think we have all heard claims muttered like this from time to time. This is not to say that there are no crotchety, bigoted Christians that spew vitriol with every other word. I see the people from Westboro Baptist church on the news like everyone else, and what I see is pathetic. True Christianity must not be confused with abuses committed in the name of Christ.

Convince Me There's A God - Causality - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The good news is that God can and does reach hardened unbelievers. He’s been doing it for thousands of years. However, reaching them can take a lot of time and patience. It also will take a special love that’s hard to muster on your own. I said some bad things to good people when I was an atheist. Some of them gave up on me – some didn’t. I don’t hold anything against those who gave up because it’s hard to hold on to someone who can be very mean in what they say and do to you, but I am thankful to people who kept loving me even when my responses were purposely offensive.

Are Single People the Lepers of Today's Church? - OnFaith

Excellent article. I’d need to say that my experience is that it is harder to be single in the church than it is in the world. One of the worst experiences happened while visiting a church. I was passed from person to person, as they discussed (as though I wasn’t there) what to do with a single person during the Sunday School hour. Needless to say, I haven’t returned. Despite a college degree in Bible I am not qualified to mentor anyone in the women’s ministry. I also can’t be mentored since no one has any idea what I need since I’m not dealing with a husband or children. I’m stubborn enough to keep going back, and there are a few folks how have taken time to get to know me and include me. I truly believe that a good marriage is a wonderful thing. But, if it is so perfect and full of happiness why do we need so many ministries like “Focus on the Family” or “Family Life Today?” I’ve learned a lot from those family oriented ministries. It is unfortunate that so many in the church ignore the lessons they could learn from the single folks who truly have learned to rely on Christ alone.

Struggling to Love in the Face of Evil

How on earth are we supposed to love a culture that refuses to love itself? And, more importantly to our sin nature, how are we supposed to show mercy to a people who want to harm us? Our mission team has been studying Acts, that ghastly book that tells about missionaries like Paul and Peter and Barnabas, who get chased out of town, beaten, stoned, imprisoned, and continue to plant churches, preach the gospel, and show mercy to those who disparage them. The same book points out my sins and provides examples of a good missionary to whom I will never measure up.

“So Peter Opened His Mouth” — The Preacher’s Calling Reduced to Five Powerful Words

And Cornelius said, “Four days ago, about this hour, I was praying in my house at the ninth hour, and behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing and said, ‘Cornelius, your prayer has been heard and your alms have been remembered before God. Send therefore to Joppa and ask for Simon who is called Peter. He is lodging in the house of Simon, a tanner, by the sea.’ So I sent for you at once, and you have been kind enough to come. Now therefore we are all here in the presence of God to hear all that you have been commanded by the Lord.” So Peter opened his mouth and said: “Truly I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. As for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ (he is Lord of all), you yourselves know what happened throughout all Judea, beginning from Galilee after the baptism that John proclaimed: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power. He went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him.

35 Whether you want to be or not, you are drafted into the war of ideas - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

“Boy, I sure wish you could come with me and talk to my college professor!” “If only I had you with me at our next family dinner.” “Wow, I would love to have those guys at work come and talk to you for a while.” Have you ever said or thought a statement like that before? Many pastors and apologists are hearing phrases like these more and more. There are good reasons for why this is so, as students are facing increasingly harsh criticism when standing up for their Christian beliefs.

Starting a Church without Losing Your Soul

I've written an article for the Exponential 09 website on how to plant a church without losing your soul. I've seen many leaders, including those who would be considered successful, and those whose work failed to produce lasting fruit, crash and burn while doing the very thing God called them to do. If you're planting, or thinking of planting, these words are for you.

Why Your People Are Not Sharing Their Faith

If we are still in awe that the holy and eternal God of the universe would pursue us in our sinfulness, humble Himself and suffer in our place, become the curse for our sin, and absorb our punishment to give us His peace, then we can’t help but share this news. If we are convinced that the news about Jesus is truly good news, we can’t help but spread it.

40 Reason and Intuition - Chicken and Egg - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

I’ve been wrestling a lot, lately, with the proper relationship between reason and emotion. Part of the motivation for this conflict in my own mind is because I know people who gravitate to one or the other of these, and they often look down upon whichever of the two they do not gravitate toward. But I find myself drawn to aspects of both, and repulsed by the overemphasis of either. I see value in emotions, even though I see how they can be unreliable and lead to wildly inaccurate beliefs about reality (and completely pointless or harmful actions that are based on those beliefs). Conversely, I obviously hold reason in high regard (as you will know if you’ve read Arguing with Friends or poked around my site for a bit), yet I can see how rationalism can seem cold and heartless, and that some of the most horrific atrocities in human history have had surprisingly coherent reasons behind them.

Bitter Breakups and Divine Closure: Our Pain and His Providence

A proper understanding of biblical providence sees God's presence in our pain. When we lose someone significant, feelings of loneliness and abandonment invade our thoughts and emotions. Even if we're surrounded with loved ones who care for us, their words of encouragement and attempts to provide closure rarely bring us comfort. What we really need is divine presence.

43 Apologetics 101: Did we win the galactic lottery or is the universe finely tuned? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Last week we saw that Princeton physicist Peter Steinhardt rejects The Big Bang Theory out of hand because he refuses to believe anything could come into being with such a fine tuned design.  He is not alone.  The Big Bang Theory haunts science because if it is true then the universe had a beginning and no plausible naturalistic explanation can account for it. But it is not just the beginning that bothers naturalists, it is what happened immediately afterward that is truly mind-boggling.

45 Faith and knowledge - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Faith is indeed intellectual; It involves an apprehension of certain things as facts; and vain is the modern effort to divorce faith from knowledge. But although faith is intellectual, it is not only intellectual. You cannot have faith without having knowledge; but you will not have faith if you only have knowledge.

Can you Do What You Love?

Paul: I don’t instinctively have warm fuzzy feelings towards the idea of “Do What You Love” on a number of levels. I do think that God has made us so that we can enjoy working. When what he gives us to do resonates with who we are, with something that comes alive in us, then that life is good. But we live in a fallen world. Those good things only occur in God’s economy when our gaze is outwards, towards God and other people. That is when “who I am” and “what I do” starts to sing. It’s not when I’m focusing on satisfying myself.

What don't you like about Jesus? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Oftentimes when I engage unbelievers in dialog, it’s common to hear a litany of complaints about the Church, the hypocrisy of Christian’s behavior, and so on, with some of the criticisms being valid and others being without merit. However, because Christianity isn’t based on those things, but rather a Person, I do my best to bring them back to Jesus and have them focus on Him instead. A question I typically ask to do this is, “I hear what you’re saying, but let’s talk about Jesus for a minute. Tell me, what don’t you like about Him?”

49
Getting Clear on Evangelism

When evangelism is often discussed, it tends to focus on how churches mobilize their people to get out and connect with unbelievers. But when we think in these terms, the definition of evangelism can be mistaken as a maneuver, rather than proclamation.
