The Bible Says, 'Knowledge Puffs Up.' Does This Mean We Shouldn't Study Too Much?

When I decided to take the intellectual aspect of my spiritual beliefs more seriously, it left some of my Christian friends scratching their heads. My newly acquired love of learning landed me on the receiving end of comments like, "Don't let your head get in the way of your heart," and "I don't need to study because I have faith," and "Be careful not to study too much because 'knowledge puffs up' ( 1 Corinthians 8:1 ).”

Beginning Ministry and Family Life

The temptation, given your position (especially as you first begin), is to force holiness (or moral conduct) on your family (wife and children) so that they conform to an outward pattern of spirituality. This mind-set is verbalized every time you remind them, “Remember your husband/dad is the pastor, so you must act like. . . .” Of course, sinful behavior is not to be tolerated, but that is true of your family members because they are Christians, not because they happen to be related to you, a pastor. True, there are activities and social settings that you, as a pastoral family, may not be a part of because of your position, but that’s not the point. What I am warning you against is pressuring them to put on a spiritual facade—a moralistic cover-up. It is amazing (and alarming) how easy it is to preach abounding grace from the pulpit but resort to only law in the home.

Paul Copan and the HillBilly Logician tackle Naturalism

Paul Copan and the HillBilly Logician walk into a bar… This could have been the start of a good joke.  I am sure that many will think this, as they see the title.  I think naturalism is a bigger threat to Christianity than mere atheism.   Naturalism is the idea that all that exists is nature; all we can see, touch, and experience with our senses.  Is naturalism the prevailing thought in science today?  I think the consensus would say; Yes, it most certainly is.  The following is a fairly representative view:

Mission Impossible: From the BioLogos Files

The mission of theistic evolution (TE) sometimes seems to be to do the impossible. The type of evolution TE proponents must really struggle to reconcile with their faith is not mere change over time or even universal common descent, but the Darwinian version of evolution that neither expects nor permits finding any objective evidence of design in biology.

Couldn’t God Have Used Evolution?

I am fairly at a loss to comprehend how anyone, for a moment, can doubt that Christian theology must stand or fall with the historical trustworthiness of the Jewish Scriptures. The very conception of the Messiah, or Christ, is inextricably interwoven with Jewish history; the identification of Jesus of Nazareth with that Messiah rests upon the interpretation of the passages of the Hebrew Scriptures which have no evidential value unless they possess the historical character assigned to them. If the covenant with Abraham was not made; if circumcision and sacrifices were not ordained by Jahveh; if the ‘ten words’ were not written by God’s hand on the stone tables; if Abraham is more or less a mythical hero, such as Theseus; the Story of the Deluge a fiction; that of the Fall a legend; and that of the Creation the dream of a seer; if all these definite and detailed narratives of apparently real events have no more value as history than have the stories of the regal period of Rome—what is to be said about the Messianic doctrine, which is so much less clearly enunciated: And what about the

How to Not Be an Online Troll

If you’ve spent much time online, you’ve probably encountered the quintessential comment-section dumpster fire: profanity, non sequiturs , personal attacks, condescending Wonka memes . And you’ve wondered, while gazing at the apocalyptic meltdown of the public forum, “How did it ever come to this?” As a social network marketer who spends 40-plus hours a week online, I ask myself that question daily. Sometimes hourly. But truth be told, the road from responsible cyber citizen to raging troll is short and well traveled, and many denizens of the latter are unaware they’ve vacated the former. Therefore, before we assume which of these two camps we occupy, let’s take heed lest we fall (1 Cor. 10:12). For if one day we truly will “give account for every careless word” (Matt. 12:36–37), then we can’t afford to tweet haphazardly. To that end, here are three ways to ensure that your online conversation is “gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person” (Col. 4:6). 1. Consume before Commenting Many Twitter threads spin out of control because people neglect to read the article before commenting.

Apologetics: How Long Was the Canon in Question?

The suggestion continues to be made by popular skeptics that the New Testament canon was in flux for hundreds of years. One scholar claims that no one came up with “a definitive list of books to be included in the canon that matched our list today” until “the famous Athanasian letter of 367 C.E. Even the powerful Athanasius could not settle the issue once and for all.” It’s true that, in the year 367, Athanasius of Alexandria did write a letter in which he listed the same twenty-seven books that appear in the New Testament today.

When Your Purpose is Found in a Transcendent Creator

As an atheist, I was satisfied with the purpose I had created for my life. I found meaning in my work, my family, and my responsibilities as a father and husband. I also loved the idea that I was in charge of my purpose; that I was the one who got to decide what life was all about. It wasn’t until I became a Christian that I realized my ideas about purpose and meaning were far too small and limited. I now try to illustrate this truth for others with an important utensil from my wife’s kitchen. This tool helps me demonstrate an important point: While it is certainly possible for each of us to design a purpose for our lives, we are missing opportunities for greatness if we reject the existence of a Creator God.

Jesus on Trial by David Limbaugh - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

In addition to correcting the culture’s emasculated view of Christ, Limbaugh has two fantastic chapters tackling the paradoxes of Christianity. These include: God’s plan of salvation, including the relationship between grace and works; the acknowledgement that we are sinful yet commanded to be perfect; the Trinity, that God is one in essence yet three in persons; that Jesus has two natures, human and divine; that you must give up your life to find it; that Christians are strong when they are weak; that God is sovereign yet humans have free will; that God knows all and is unchangeable, yet we are to pray; that the Bible is inspired yet written by men; and many others. The insights Limbaugh brings to these paradoxes are some of his own, and the best nuggets mined from Christian scholarship that I doubt you’ll find in one place anywhere else.
