The Beer Commercial That Has a Lesson for Christians

Recently, Heineken beer company produced a five-minute commercial titled, “Worlds Apart.” Far from the usual beer sales pitch, this commercial offers a different kind of message—one that frankly I think would make the world a better place. (Even typing those words feels a bit cheesy … but hang with me.) The commercial is not about a newfound social status or getting that person who is way out of our league. In fact, the commercial is not even about drinking. It’s about something much closer to home—understanding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wYXw4K0A3g (OK, before we get going here—a quick disclaimer: This article is not about

The Lie Too Many People Believe About Purity

I can admit that I avoided purity for a long time, just for the fear that if I failed at it God would be mad at me, God would punish me, God would be disappointed in me. I’ve been learning, though, that this is not the kind of God  we serve. In Galatians, it is made clear to us as believers that it is impossible to be made right with the Lord by our works (by keeping the law, by “being pure” through our own efforts, by being “good” people), but that it is only Christ who can give us our salvation. Our obedience can never “earn” us our salvation, because it is Christ who has done all of the work (and thank God for that).

TV Series on Netflix Worth Checking Out

Longmire. This program has been called a “neo-Western,” but it has much more in common with “The Rifleman” or “Dragnet” than it does with anything on TV today. Perhaps because this program started out on cable and then moved to Netflix, its DNA is more wholesome than that of most Netflix original programming. (A key story arc reaches fruition when the widowed Sheriff Walt Longmire refuses to have sex with his new love interest. The taciturn Longmire explains himself simply: He and his wife had not had sex until they were married.) The final season of “Longmire” is “in the can” and will release in September, and it will be interesting to see how a lot of unanswered questions get resolved. Till then, it’s great to see “old hands” such as Lou Diamond Phillips and A. Martinez, not to mention Australian actor Robert Taylor as Walt Longmire, do some of the finest acting of their careers.

For Mother's Day, Black Lives Matter Is Bailing Black Women Out of Jail

This Mother’s Day, at least 30 women will get the gift of freedom thanks to Black Lives Matter activists, who are raising funds for what they’re calling National Mama’s Bail Out Day. The women in question haven’t been convicted of any crimes—they just can’t afford to pay the bonds or fines that will let them go be with their families until their trial dates.

6 Date Ideas for This Weekend That Literally Don’t Cost Anything

I remember an expensive first date when I was in my early 20s. I was introduced to this girl and I took her out to the Cheesecake Factory. The atmosphere was pleasant and conversation was fine. After I paid the high-priced bill we started walking to our cars. She asked, “What kind of car do you drive?” Immediately, big yellow flags went up in my mind. I told her I drive a Honda Civic. I asked her the same question in turn. She said, “I drive a BMW!”

Your Friends Don't Need You to Fix Them

In this specific season of my journey toward knowing and experiencing God, I have found great comfort in a few friends who have chosen to show up in my mess and imperfections and just BE with me. They don’t quote Scripture verses to me when I’m feeling discouraged because they know it was used to manipulate and control me for many years. They don’t point out a silver-lining because they recognize that allowing the expression of grief is what brings healing. They don’t tell me to pick myself up by my bootstraps because they understand what it’s like to need to be carried or walk barefoot for a while.

12 Ways Your Phone Is Changing You: Tony Reinke, John Piper: 9781433552434: Amazon.com: Books

I was so excited to read this book, and it did not disappoint! I really appreciate that it is from the perspective of someone relevant in today's culture who uses technology like the average person, and not someone saying "I remember in my day, we didn't have phones like this". It is also not a book encouraging you to get rid of your smart phone, but one that teaches you how to use this technology in a healthy way that also glorifies God. There are things I expected to be in the book, but also eye-opening ideas that I have never thought about before. I find myself thinking of these principles in multiple ways that have been truly helpful. I have told many people about this book and have also wanted to buy this book for loved ones. Do yourself a giant favor and buy this book!!!!

3 Reasons Your Kids May Eventually Think Christianity is Worthless

My daughter, age 7, has always been very generous with her allowance and came running down the stairs with a Ziploc bag of piggy bank money the morning after the collection was announced. Love Yourself Less

But Jesus is not content with us merely observing and admiring his love. For freedom he has set us free (Galatians 5:1). Our freedom is more than being loved; it is entering fully into the experience, the fellowship of love by loving God and others in the same way: “just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34).

A New Lawsuit Claims Howard University Refused to Help Campus Rape Victims

The suit refers only to Jane Does one through five, two of whom left Howard owing to concerns about their safety. Two of the Jane Does also say they were raped by the same student, who allegedly transferred to Howard after being kicked out of UCLA for sexual misconduct. The women tweeted about the administration’s woeful response in March of 2016, leading to campus-wide protests. Shockingly, the lawsuit claims that Howard’s Dean of Student Affairs told the student, “You embarrassed your family by doing that.”

Every Good Church Is Messy

God’s plan to make his grace known to the world is not for a bunch of perfect people to live together in perfect harmony, but rather, for sinful people to cling desperately to Jesus, even in the hardest instances. God’s light may not shine in every corner of the church, but it still shines all around. When the church looks to Jesus for help in our weaknesses, powerful things can happen.

The Signs That You're Going Through a Quarter-Life Crisis

We don’t need to strive to be something we’re not. I have learned that life doesn’t need to be a competition. It’s about becoming the best versions of ourselves. Stewarding our calling inevitably requires us to muster up the courage to say no to the expectations of the world but yes to our Caller. This knowledge has helped me achieve peace and a much greater understanding of my purpose.

26
Christians Should Talk About Feminism More

We need our girls and women to be people who are thriving and alive. I want my daughters to be confident and joyful young women. I don’t think this is too much to ask or expect. In the words of Edmund Burke, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” I believe we are living in a time where for too long we have chosen to do nothing. No ruffling of feathers or making of waves. But sometimes waves need to be made and feathers need to be ruffled. Sitting politely and quietly will only get us more of the same result, and that is not acceptable. Let’s beat drums and yell loudly so the generations to come know that they were fought for, so they know they are loved and valued and worth every moment of that fight.

It's Time for Christians to Start Taking Climate Change Seriously

Living in a post-truth world can be difficult for those of us who simply do not understand the uncanny ability so many people have to simply dismiss facts. Working as a journalist covering climate change, global warming and clean technology for over a decade, this has been a specific problem I have had to deal with. People all over the world, both in positions of power and not, seem to believe that there is room for debate on the issues of climate change, humanity’s involvement and the need to transition to a low-carbon future.

The Ongoing Struggle against the Culture to Defend Intrinsic Human Value | Stand to Reason

After greeting his wife and other relatives with her at their home, Hilarion begs her to “take care of the little one,” their child, promising to send money as soon as he is paid. Then, referring to Alis expecting another child very soon, he writes, “if it is a boy, let it be, if it is a girl, cast it out.” But then after this rather blunt order, he continues by expressing his unaltered tender affection for Alis: “How can I forget you? I beg you then not to be anxious.” Obviously, the man was not a monster and was capable of tender feelings. Nor was he unusual for the time in his attitude about infant exposure. That is precisely the point to note: the practice of discarding infants shortly after birth, and before they had been accepted by the father as family members, was so much a feature of the culture of the Roman period that many otherwise caring people seem to have felt little reluctance about it. This contrasts with Roman-era attitudes toward killing or discarding children after they had been accepted into their families. That was condemned.

The Subtle Art of Sabotaging a Pastor

Help your patient to see all that he lacks. Stroke his discontent. The less satisfied your patient is with what the Enemy has done for him and all the Enemy has given him, the more alluring the validation, approval, and praise of others will be. Empty him of his confidence by highlighting his failures so that therefore his head will be far more easily swelled with adulations and self-confidences. Then pop those like a pin to a balloon and start again. It is easy for a pastor to move to pride — it is his default setting — so this should not be too difficult for you.

The Dakota Access Pipeline Has Spilled 84 Gallons of Oil Into South Dakota

The $3.8 billion pipeline drew international protests after the Standing Rock Sioux tribe told government officials that the pipeline would desecrate sacred burial grounds and voiced concerns about possible oil spills. The 84-gallon spill took place about 100 miles east of Lake Oahe, which became the nexus of last year’s protest movement. The spill will reportedly have no impact on the pipeline’s start date of June 1.
