The Beer Commercial That Has a Lesson for Christians

Recently, Heineken beer company produced a five-minute commercial titled, “Worlds Apart.” Far from the usual beer sales pitch, this commercial offers a different kind of message—one that frankly I think would make the world a better place. (Even typing those words feels a bit cheesy … but hang with me.) The commercial is not about a newfound social status or getting that person who is way out of our league. In fact, the commercial is not even about drinking. It’s about something much closer to home—understanding. (OK, before we get going here—a quick disclaimer: This article is not about

TV Series on Netflix Worth Checking Out

Longmire. This program has been called a “neo-Western,” but it has much more in common with “The Rifleman” or “Dragnet” than it does with anything on TV today. Perhaps because this program started out on cable and then moved to Netflix, its DNA is more wholesome than that of most Netflix original programming. (A key story arc reaches fruition when the widowed Sheriff Walt Longmire refuses to have sex with his new love interest. The taciturn Longmire explains himself simply: He and his wife had not had sex until they were married.) The final season of “Longmire” is “in the can” and will release in September, and it will be interesting to see how a lot of unanswered questions get resolved. Till then, it’s great to see “old hands” such as Lou Diamond Phillips and A. Martinez, not to mention Australian actor Robert Taylor as Walt Longmire, do some of the finest acting of their careers.

The Point: William Kimmel Opens Hearts

Now many were bothered by Kimmel’s use of his son’s story to argue for Obamacare. But while I have my thoughts on that too, I couldn’t shake a far more important inconsistency in our country. Namely, how many would defend the so-called right of parents to abort an unborn baby with a similar defect, had it been discovered in utero.

Q & A with Dr. Craig: God of the Gaps

Thank you so much for your site. As an opener, I thought I'd share how much you've impacted my life, and the "random" (quotes intended) road that led me to you. If hope you'll answer my question eventually, which is very important to me. You can feel free to share or not share this story as part of the question, but I think the question works just fine as a stand-alone.

Unfinished Journey: How Christianity Came to China

Although Lodwick emphasizes the need for Westerners to listen to Chinese Christians if they truly wish to understand Chinese Christianity, her book does little to convey the voices or experiences of Chinese believers. Her conclusion that the formation of the Communist-directed Three-Self Patriotic Movement in 1950 was “not a major doctrinal issue” completely overlooks the deep theological convictions that led many believers to oppose the government’s control of the church. Lodwick’s pursuit of her thesis that the missionaries were largely ineffective in making converts (except among China’s marginalized) leaves little room for serious reflection on how the gospel actually took root in Chinese soil.

Your Friends Don't Need You to Fix Them

In this specific season of my journey toward knowing and experiencing God, I have found great comfort in a few friends who have chosen to show up in my mess and imperfections and just BE with me. They don’t quote Scripture verses to me when I’m feeling discouraged because they know it was used to manipulate and control me for many years. They don’t point out a silver-lining because they recognize that allowing the expression of grief is what brings healing. They don’t tell me to pick myself up by my bootstraps because they understand what it’s like to need to be carried or walk barefoot for a while.

Love Yourself Less

But Jesus is not content with us merely observing and admiring his love. For freedom he has set us free (Galatians 5:1). Our freedom is more than being loved; it is entering fully into the experience, the fellowship of love by loving God and others in the same way: “just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another” (John 13:34).

As Solomon warned, “Of making many books there is no end” (Ecc 12:12). There is no way to read everything, and not everything deserves to be read. You Can Defeat Distraction

You can set your mind, and you will set it somewhere — or if you leave it alone, it will go somewhere. The question isn’t whether your mind will find a home to return to, but what that default will be. Will you be preoccupied with one small thing after another: a favorite sport or team, how you look, how much money you make, how well-known you are, what you’d like to possess, what improvements you’d like to make in your earthly lives? Or will you put in the mental effort to make your mind’s home be the things of the Father (Matthew 16:23), the Son (Colossians 3:1–3), and the Spirit (Romans 8:5–7)?

The Man Who Was Beheaded the Day He Became a Christian | The Stream

This story changed my faith when it happened in real time. It was a time of much more in-your-face original awareness of isis evil. I am so glad you bring the story to folks who may have not been aware of it. I have been hoping against and praying against complacency that often comes when the headlines become less terrifying and more just distracting from the true evil that is happening at the hands of true radical haters. The liberals have lost a big election and have been trying to delineate the meanings of adjectives by assigning them to comparitively trivial pursuits and to scare people into feeling sorry for disagreeing with their poor persecution for being liberal or alphabet people or atheists or climate alarmists and such. If these distractors had any real awareness or good sense, they would face facts and realize that, while they may abhor Christians and conservatives, if they want the truth it’s that these radical muslims would chop off their heads for being alphabet insisters, promiscuous women, non-radical Muslim loyalists or just being near a sword to slash their throats with if they had the chance.

What’s the Difference Between ‘Foolish’ and ’Sinful’?

That’s enough for me to get some inferences here. Here’s my inference from all that biblical picture. Foolishness in the Bible is always sinful. To act foolishly is to sin. I think we can say it the other way around. To sin is to act foolishly. To act foolishly is sin, and to sin is to act foolishly. Sin is an attitude or a thought or an action that dishonors God or is the fruit of a heart that does not treasure God above all things. So, sin dishonors God like that, and folly dishonors God like that.

New Book Debunks Common Myths in ID-Evolution Debate | Evolution News

Barczeska  turns finally to media discourse on the debate. She begins by correctly observing, “Even though reporters label new court cases ‘Scopes II,’ the debate has changed in form and content since the 1920s.” (p. 37) But how does the media perpetuate these old myths and stereotypes? Reviewing numerous examples, she notes that in media stories, “There is strong correlation between intelligent design and words identifying it as religious.” (p. 282) Yet her examples show that, “Whereas ID is commonly classified in the U.S. press as a religious belief or religious approach to scientific questions, evolution is for the most part presented as belonging securely within the domain of SCIENCE.” (p. 286) Insightfully, Barczewska  points out that different types of “framing” in different news articles can lead to stories that only satisfy some of the concerns of certain segments of readers. Thus, she notes:

But at this point, not only do we need to remind ourselves that it has been the left, including civil libertarians, who have historically insisted that governments should never collect this kind of data, we also need to remind ourselves of what it would actually mean for the government to collect this kind of information from its citizens. Remember that in terms of the census—by the way in the United States the census is a legal obligation among citizens—you will have data collection that is household by household. That means that someone will be asked questions about every individual household counted in the census in which, according to this article, we would be better served if the government asked direct questions, by the way not only about the adults living in that household, but everyone living in that household, right down to questions of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Reject simple religious answers to Israeli-Palestinian conflict urges Justin Welby - Premier

"If you say 'you’re Jewish you’re good' and 'they’re Christian, they’re bad' – that’s nice and simple. You can get people behind you. But what you’ve done is use religion as a hook and if you use the hook for long enough it becomes part of the reality of the problem, and that’s the huge danger in places where religious feeling runs high."

The Lie Too Many People Believe About Purity

I can admit that I avoided purity for a long time, just for the fear that if I failed at it God would be mad at me, God would punish me, God would be disappointed in me. I’ve been learning, though, that this is not the kind of God  we serve. In Galatians, it is made clear to us as believers that it is impossible to be made right with the Lord by our works (by keeping the law, by “being pure” through our own efforts, by being “good” people), but that it is only Christ who can give us our salvation. Our obedience can never “earn” us our salvation, because it is Christ who has done all of the work (and thank God for that).

The Signs That You're Going Through a Quarter-Life Crisis

We don’t need to strive to be something we’re not. I have learned that life doesn’t need to be a competition. It’s about becoming the best versions of ourselves. Stewarding our calling inevitably requires us to muster up the courage to say no to the expectations of the world but yes to our Caller. This knowledge has helped me achieve peace and a much greater understanding of my purpose.

Everyone Loves Sex: So Why Wait? Interview with Author Bryan Sands.

SANDS: In order to have any impact, it is imperative that we meet Millennials (or anyone for that matter) where they are. I think it begins with listening, gaining an understanding of what they believe, why, and what their experiences are. Once we do that, we set ourselves up for fruitful conversations. I also think these conversations need to take a decidedly holistic approach, involving more than just throwing out scripture (often as proof-texts), but insights from psychology and sociology as well. The message must be more than just “because God says so.” I believe what is communicated in Scripture—but we need to meet this arising generation where they are.

True Beauty in a Victoria’s Secret World

Do you wonder about the longing in your hearts? A second kingdom calls your name. God has put eternity into your hearts (Ecclesiastes 3:11), the beauty yet to come. Clapping. Laughter “like a thousand waterfalls.” Worship. A beautiful heaven, gold-paved streets. Bejeweled walls and wide-open gates. A river like crystal. No more death, sadness, or pain. Ever. No need for the sun or moon because of the glorious light of our King, seated on his glorious throne (Revelation 21–22). He is there. Invisible now, but visible forever.

Christians Should Talk About Feminism More

We need our girls and women to be people who are thriving and alive. I want my daughters to be confident and joyful young women. I don’t think this is too much to ask or expect. In the words of Edmund Burke, “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” I believe we are living in a time where for too long we have chosen to do nothing. No ruffling of feathers or making of waves. But sometimes waves need to be made and feathers need to be ruffled. Sitting politely and quietly will only get us more of the same result, and that is not acceptable. Let’s beat drums and yell loudly so the generations to come know that they were fought for, so they know they are loved and valued and worth every moment of that fight.

Silence Is the Enemy of Love: Plea from a Christian Jew

“You not only have the right,” I offered. “You have the responsibility.” I went on to tell him how I believed that God was bringing the Jewish people back to Germany for at least three reasons: because of His love for the Jewish people, because of His love for the German church, and because of His love for the German people. God wants my people to hear the gospel and be saved. He wants German believers to know the joy of being used by God to bring His people to Himself. He wants Germans to hear the gospel from Jewish lips. And I think He wants the world to see Jews and Germans, proclaiming the gospel together. What a testimony of the love of the Lord. What a testimony of the reconciling power of the cross.

What Donald Trump Could Teach Ellen DeGeneres About Diversity and Tolerance | The Stream

When it comes to people having “rights,” we could obviously debate many aspects of LGBT rights. For example, does a biological male who identifies as a female have the “right” to use the ladies’ bathroom? But right now, President Trump is not campaigning to overturn the Supreme Court’s ruling on same-sex “marriage” (again, I would be glad if he did), so I’m still not sure whose “rights” he is opposing.

Why Francis Schaeffer Matters: The Church in Culture

Francis Schaeffer’s view of the church in modern culture is multifaceted yet cuts straight to the point.  He does not mince words or play clever evangelical games.  He believes one major problem with Christians is that they see things in bits and pieces.  They have failed to see that modern man’s despair has come to fruition because of a shift in worldview.  He contends that Christians should begin to think in terms of the big picture.  They should have a view of spiritual reality that is authentic and covers all areas of life.  Indeed, the Lordship of Christ covers all life and all life equally.

The Pastoral Skill We Must Reclaim

One of the most important things we can teach anybody is that this book matters to their life. It will positively impact their imagination, their thinking, their whole person. Read it, breath it, eat it, drink it, love the Bible. But if we allow these small habits to creep into our teaching, we set them up for failure because we’re not playing by the Bible’s rules. Ultimately we’re undermining our own work. You can make the same point you’re trying to make with the Jeremiah passage by going to Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him.” Applying that verse to individuals’ lives is consistent with Paul’s intention. You get the same meaning without undermining your people’s habits of Scripture reading.
