TBS Show Host and Guest Go on Expletive-Laced Rant Against Pregnancy Centers, Pro-Lifers

TBS's "Full Frontal" show host Samantha Bee teamed up with fellow comedian Patton Oswalt to rail against the "ultimate hustle" — crisis pregnancy centers, which Bee said are "full of toxic bullsh*t." Bee dedicated a 7-minute segment of her Monday night episode to slamming crisis pregnancy centers. Rather...

Is the Bible Full of Contradictions?

“The Bible is full of contradictions!” We hear it all the time from skeptics and atheists as if it’s common knowledge. But is it true? I’ve devoted the last few months to answering this question. What I have discovered is that many alleged contradictions arise because an unfair standard, or...

3 The Briefing 05-11-16 – AlbertMohler.com

Immediately after making that statement, Attorney General Loretta Lynch then made a direct reference to Jim Crow laws that followed the Emancipation Proclamation. She made a direct linkage between the Jim Crow laws that enforced racial segregation in America and North Carolina’s law that says that persons should use the public restroom that is associated with their gender at birth. Explicitly and without subtlety, the Attorney General used the language of fairness, tying this to what she described as the founding ideals of this country and suggesting that, inevitably, history is turning in this direction. Now remember, she’s talking about LGBT issues in particular, the rights of those who claim a transgender identity to use whatever bathroom they may choose and she’s tying it to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, knowing full well that there was no legislative intent that included LGBT issues—but furthermore, putting the full energy of the Obama Administration behind this moral revolution as now a revolution in the law, not just in the interpretation of Title VII and Title IX of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, but about the entirety of our constitutional tradition.

New Reports on Religious Freedom

And now yet another report is confirming the grimness of the situation around the globe. The 2016 report of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom, which is chaired by our friend and Wilberforce Award winner Robert George, warns that conditions are worsening in many places. “By any measure,” the 276-page report says, “ religious freedom abroad has been under serious and sustained assault since. . . 2015.”. “From the plight of new and longstanding prisoners of conscience, to the dramatic rise in the numbers of refugees and internally displaced persons, to the continued acts of bigotry against Jews and Muslims in Europe, …there was no shortage of suffering.”

5 The Liberty U Board Member Who Publicly Challenged Jerry Falwell Jr. Resigned

While members of the Executive Committee individually asked Mark DeMoss to resign from the Executive Committee, no vote was ever taken by the Executive Committee to ask Mark DeMoss to resign. On Thursday, April 21, he was encouraged by members of the Executive Committee to remain on the Board and apologize to the Board. At the Board of Trustees meeting the following day, Mark DeMoss offered an apology to the Board and tendered his resignation from the Executive Committee. The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to accept the apology of Mark DeMoss in the Christian spirit of love and grace. Mark DeMoss sent an email with his resignation on Tuesday, April 26, 2016, four days after the Board of Trustees meeting. He was not removed from the Board of Trustees nor did the Board of Trustees ask for his resignation.

Troubleshooting the Celebrity Pastor Problem

Again, none of these things is easy to do. Tackling the celebrity pastor problem from any of these angles would likely require a fundamental and complex reconsideration and reconfiguration of the ways many of us do ministry, do church, “do” evangelicalism. But we leave these proposals unconsidered to our own peril. Ignoring these things certainly allows us to continue on as we’ve always done, indiscriminately adopting the values of the world in celebritizing our leaders and then acting shocked and angry when they fall under the pressure. But we’ve seen what happens when a ministry is oriented almost wholly around the platform of one guy. When he falls, the ministry does. Heck, set aside the notion of sinful disqualification. What happens to your satellite campuses when the big screen preacher gets hit by a bus?

8 Does Knowledge Require Bombproof Certainty? | Think Christianly

Our beliefs come in degrees of confidence, and some beliefs are more central than others; logical certainty is available only in mathematics. I may be very confident that God raised Jesus from the dead and have less confidence as to whether or not Christians ought to take the Lord’s Supper every week, but my differing levels of confidence don’t negate my beliefs. The all-or-nothing standard for knowledge gets us in trouble because it eliminates virtually everything that ultimately matters.

Our Sense of Moral Obligation Proves Materialism Is False | Cold Case Christianity

If we, as humans, are only physical systems (merely matter), we ought to stop trying to hold each other accountable for misbehavior. In fact, there can be no misbehavior if we are only physical brains and bodies; there can only be behavior . Our actions have no moral content at all unless we truly have the freedom to choose and the ability to break the bondage of physical event causation. As a homicide detective, I can’t prosecute the gun or knife that was used by the murderer, but I can certainly arrest the free-agent human that used the physical tool to commit the murder in the first place. I can’t do this if the human was only another purely physical object in a sequence of caused events. If materialism (physicalism) is true, there is no need for homicide detectives. We still employ detectives, however, because our sense of moral obligation proves materialism to be false.

Last summer, fellow Truthbomber Chase Deener and I went out to a local park to share the gospel.  We came across a few Jehovah's Witnesses on the corner giving out free literature.  We decided to engage them with a few questions. After we introduced ourselves and explained our position, I asked the gentlemen to get out his New World Translation Bible and read Isaiah 9:6 for me.  He read: "For a child has been born to us, a son has been given to us; And the rulership will rest on his shoulder.  His name will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace." I asked, "Who is that verse referring to?"  He answered, "Jesus."  I then said, "Considering Jehovah's Witnesses reject the deity of Christ, how do you account for Jesus being referred to as 'Mighty God' in this verse?"  He claimed that that Jesus was a 'lesser God' than God the Father.  However, as Norman Geisler and Ron Rhodes explain, this claim is clearly mistaken: "The folly of the Watchtower position is at once evident in the fact that Jehovah himself is called a 'Mighty God' in the very next chapter of Isaiah (10:21).

God Has Already Revealed His Plan for Your Life

Yes, the truth is in fact that each day we wake we ARE already in and living God's will for our lives. He is sovereign and outside time-space. He sees and knows the end from the beginning. The events of the day, this week, month, the rest of 2016 are even now known by Him, and it is in that awesome omniscience that we either rest each day, with "a peace that surpasses all human comprehension", "confident in our hope and deep conviction of things not seen" . . . or, we struggle, have anxiety, and miss out on peace while searching/waiting for some kind of revelatory event to "show us" God's will. Walking in the Spirit is so much more about daily Joy in all circumstances, restful peace in knowing Him, patience to let His will unfold daily/weekly, maintaining faithfulness in and to Him daily, and the self-control to not have to run ahead of Him or require God to make His will known in what many describe as the "supernatural, signs and wonders". ALL that He has for us is already supernatural (it's from outside this natural world), and special revelation (specific to us), Spirit-led (His Holy Spirit dwells richly in us daily and does not come and go as part of 'signs'), and finally truly miraculous - as we see circumstances unfold, align, coordinate, and come to fruition such that when we look back with 20/20 hindsight we can say nothing other than, "Wow, Lord, that was so cool to see how you worked that in YOUR timing".

Hope for the Unhappy Christian

It’s true that God is not giving you what you deserve. We deserve God’s wrath, yet daily we receive new mercies. How can sickness, suffering, and other tragedies be considered mercy? By realizing that every morning we don’t wake up in hell is an example of God’s mercy toward us. Even when we’re feeling our worst, God is showing us more mercy than we deserve. There is no calamity or tragedy that we can face that is worse than the holy wrath of God. At the same time, there is no earthly pleasure that can compare to the glory that is to be revealed. This is how the Apostle Paul faced suffering, “For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

The Way to Fix Christian Films: Add Ambiguity

Not even a word about the fact that the majority of the problems with these films come from the fact that they are very bad technically. Poor writing, poor plotlines, VERY poor acting (I liked Fireproof overall but there were so many wooden moments that just made me CRINGE), and adequate cinematography at best. The only "Christian movie" I've seen that didn't make me roll my eyes was The Second Chance, and that dealt with some pretty tough racial and socioeconomic themes that most Christian movies that succeeded it wouldn't dare to touch. I am more than tired of this shiny-happy veneer that gets put on most Christian movies, or that they think that the biggest issue facing Christians in America today are atheistic professors. The persecution complex is enough to drive anyone absolutely mad (anyone who doesn't falsely ascribe to it that is - I note that most who do rarely venture beyond the walls of their own Christian echo-chamber communities) but the inability to name, identify, and engage with the actual struggles and sometimes dark side of life on this side of Heaven is downright disturbing.

Feedback: Why Are the Gospels of Matthew and John Different?

As an example, imagine if a family of four took a road trip. Suppose the father drives the car for a notable distance with both children awake, and then the mother assists him in the driving responsibilities while one child sleeps and the other child remains awake. Neither child would be incorrect in their observations if one of them later records that their father drove them out to a destination while the other child records that their father took them some distance and then their mother assisted him. No one would argue the legitimacy of either report, especially if either child’s point of view was in some way limited (as was very likely in the accounts of both Matthew and John given the lack of mobility in Jerusalem on Passover week). No one would contest the report of either child. Similarly, a straightforward reading of the Gospels presents numerous differences in perspective and detail that supplement each other but do not contradict.

At the same time, earthquakes and continental collisions would raise and lower land at different places and times. This cycle could occur several times before the Flood finally covered the area completely.

11 Contemporary Authors Every Christian Should Read

I never liked to read memoirs until I read one by Mary Karr. Now, I can’t get enough of them—especially hers. Karr writes with such meticulousness and detail, it feels like she started journaling her childhood as soon as she could hold a pencil. Even though her prose is excellent, I like her poetry even more. It bleeds and nourishes. She often writes about death, perseverance and family, and the way she talks about theology makes you rethink things you never knew you had to rethink. She is an honest writer, and we all need a little more honesty in our lives.

Did the Early Christians Get the Jesus Story Wrong?

Prior installments in this series include  Forged in 2011 [ review ], Jesus, Interrupted in 2009 [ review ], God’s Problem in 2007, and Misquoting Jesus in 2005. Each of these books, though different in specific topic, tells the same overall story: Ehrman, once an evangelical who attended Moody Bible Institute and Wheaton College, has now discovered, along with the consensus of modern scholarship, that the New Testament—and the Gospels in particular—don’t provide a trustworthy account of the historical Jesus. Instead, what we have are books that are forgeries, contain contradictions, have morally questionable teachings, and have been edited and changed through the centuries.

28 Grace to You

John 1:41 Messiah. The term “Messiah” is a transliteration of a Hebrew or Aramaic verbal adjective that means “Anointed One.” It comes from a verb that means “to anoint” someone as an action involved in consecrating that person to a particular office or function. While the term at first applied to the king of Israel (“the LORD’s anointed,” 1 Sam. 16:6), the high priest (“the anointed priest,” Lev. 4:3) and, in one passage, the patriarchs (“My anointed ones,” Ps. 105:15), the term eventually came to point above all to the prophesied “Coming One” or “Messiah” in His role as prophet, priest, and king. The term “Christ,” a Greek word (verbal adjective) that comes from a verb meaning “to anoint,” is used in translating the Hebrew term, so that the terms “Messiah” or “Christ” are titles and not personal names of Jesus.

29 This Teenager May Have Just Discovered a Lost Mayan City on Google Maps

Gadoury said that Mayan cities often corresponded with the location of constellations, because of their beliefs about agricultural cycles. Young Gadoury then did something no historian, researcher or archaeologist had thought to. He mapped out where a city should be by adding the location of a new constellation. (Like we said, kids these days!) Sure enough, once he checked out the location via satellite imagery, he found evidence of the ancient culture.

WORLD | Midday Roundup: Police search for motive in Mass. stabbing rampage | Leigh Jones | May 11, 2016

Senseless attack. Police in a small city south of Boston are trying to figure out what caused a 28-year-old man to go on a stabbing rampage that left two people dead. Arthur Darosa started his attack outside a home in Taunton, Mass. After crashing his car, he ran inside a house and stabbed two women. One of the victims, who was 80 years old, later died at the hospital. Darosa then jumped into another car and drove to the nearby Silver City Galleria mall, where he crashed the vehicle through the front of a Macy’s department store. After attacking several people there, he ran through the mall to a Bertucci’s restaurant, where he stabbed four more people. A 56-year-old man who had been eating at the restaurant later died. An off-duty sheriff’s deputy eventually brought Darosa’s rampage to an end when he shot and killed him. Darosa’s father said he suffered from psychiatric issues but had refused to take medication. He had recently been hospitalized for suicidal thoughts.

Science and Faith: Who Wins?

Scientists who happen to also be atheists tell us that we must not consider God into the research, for if we do we will kill science. They tell us that by definition, science deals with natural causes and that if we mix in God as a cause or a designer or even as an idea, we have mixed in religion and done away with the foundations of science.

Was Adam a Historical Person?

“In Adam’s fall, we sinned all.” So begins the New England Primer, which taught generations of early Americans to read. In introducing our forefathers to the letter A , the primer was also administering a generous dose of biblical theology. As Paul puts it crisply in 1 Corinthians 15:22 , “For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.” Through Adam, sin and death entered into the world. By Christ, sin and death were conquered. Adam forfeited life by his disobedience. Christ achieved life by His obedience. These simple, basic truths, Paul tells the Corinthians, are the very structure and content of the gospel.

49 Poll: Almost 30% of ‘Born Again Christians’ Say They Won’t Vote for Hillary or Trump

The poll shows that 25 percent of these Christians say they will neither vote for Trump nor Clinton, and will vote for a third candidate or abstain from voting instead. What’s more, that percentage appears to be climbing: Those who chose “Other/Wouldn’t vote/Refuse” climbed 7 percent between May 3 to May 6 (the most recent available data) to 28.5 percent. Of course, we’ll have to watch this study during the next few weeks, but it’s starting to look like the angst among some Christian voters surrounding the 2016 election could end up being a major factor.
