Motherhood and the Life of the Mind

Then, through a series of very painful circumstances, God showed me, in no uncertain terms, that my intellectual fulfillment was inextricably linked to Him and to my ministry calling–a calling that He had been leading me towards since college, though I didn’t recognize it until that much later date. So, exactly 10 years after finishing my bachelor’s degree, I applied to graduate school and began working towards a master’s in science and religion (that science background had a much higher purpose than I ever expected!). Five years after that momentous event, here I am, about to begin doctoral work. I am overwhelmed just thinking about where I was spiritually and intellectually (stagnant) and where God has brought me–while I’ve remained a stay-at-home mother and the primary educator of my children. Sometimes my heart feels like it’s going to burst with the gratitude I feel for this transformative, enlightening,  joyful, no-turning-back journey I’ve been granted. The most wonderful thing about it, though, is not how my inner life has changed for the better; rather, it’s how much better equipped I have become to be the mother I should be.

3 Strengthen the Defenses Around Your Home

And we can also make our job easier by creating a safe haven for them in our homes. Author Tim Challies has put together a step-by-step plan to take the mystery out of today’s technology and arm every device in your home against sexually-explicit material. I’ll link you to his plan on his blog, as well as other great resources for stemming the tide at ThePointRadio.org. I’m John Stonestreet.

Another example of convergence found in human and squid eye genes

The argument for convergent evolution in this case isn’t so much that humans and cephalopods don’t have a common ancestor, but that they couldn’t have gotten this particular gene from a common ancestor. The problem is that JUST these two organisms have this same gene, even though they are not closely related, while their close relatives do not. The issue isn’t just that they have the same gene, but that all the other organisms thought to be closely related to them and “between” them (so to speak) in the evolutionary chain do not.

Do Youth Need Apologetics? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Sean has graduated from high school and is getting ready to go to college. He has had excellent grades all his life and decides that he will go to Harvard. He applies and is happy to hear that he has been accepted. Sean has grown up in the church all his life, but he has received no training in apologetics. He would not even know what the word means. He is unaware at this point of how many of his professors are atheists, have been for years, and are ready to let his Sunday School faith be knocked down. Is he ready?

8 John Lennox and Paul Davies discuss aliens and the origin of life

An amazing debate about the origin of life and the cosmic fine-tuning between a Christian and a materialist agnostic. John Lennox is AWESOME in this debate, and he only talks for a tiny part of the debate. He’s very gracious, and focused the discussion on the areas that we care about. Paul Davies is an EXCELLENT scientist and well aware of what Christians believe. This is a great debate, very easy to listen to. Justin, the moderator, does a great job controlling a fantastic discussion.

9 http://www.ligonier.org/rym/broadcasts/audio/reliability-sense-may-2014/

Humans typically trust their senses. Despite the fact that we have all had our senses fooled from time to time, we assume that what we see, hear, taste and touch gives us accurate information about the world. Yet some philosophers challenge this notion. For example, the eighteenth century Scotsman David Hume challenged our perceptions of cause and effect. In this lesson, Dr. Sproul addresses Hume’s ideas and reaffirms the reliability of sense perception.

What Happens If We Add "Legend" to the Trilemma "Liar, Lunatic, or Lord"? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

He did not leave us that option: he did not intend to." Thus C. S. Lewis closes out his famous "Trilemma" argument on the impossibility of Jesus being a great moral teacher and nothing more. The argument is beautiful in its simplicity: it calls for no deep familiarity with New Testament theology or history, only knowledge of the Gospels themselves, and some understanding of human nature. A man claiming to be God, says Lewis, could hardly be good unless he really was God. If Jesus was not the Lord, then (to borrow Josh McDowell's alliterative version of the argument), he must have been a liar or a lunatic.

Pain's Benefit to Squid May Hold Clues to Chronic Human Pain, Scientists Say

The scientists wanted to make sure that it was this sensitive state affecting an injured squid's behavior, rather than any mechanical effects of losing an arm tip, so they injured a second group of 16 squid in the same way as the first group. But before cutting off the tip of an arm, Crook and colleagues applied a local anesthetic to the area. This prevented those 16 squid from registering their injury for about six hours.

5 Signs You May Have a Wrong View of God

Excellent points that should be heard by all of us! It's easy to fall for these wrong ways of thinking. If I might move from the vertical to the horizontal, another indicator Jesus emphasized is the way we respond to and treat others --especially those who wrong us. The poor in spirit to whom the Kingdom belongs are those who are truly amazed that God and men would think of them and treat them as well as they do. Cultural amazement moves in the exact opposite direction! When we lose that amazement, we have a wrong view of God, ourselves and our fellow man. One of the most important messages I've given in 30 years of ministry is focused on this matter (if interested, http://thinkpoint.wordpress.com/2014/05/10/what-should-you-expect-3/ )

Grace to You

When you give as Jesus directs—lovingly, unpretentiously, and with no concern for public recognition—“your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.” In other words, if you remember, God forgets; and if you forget, God still remembers. You should simply try to meet every need you can and leave the bookkeeping to Him. This kind of giving is just a matter of realizing that “we have done only that which we ought to have done” (Luke 17:10).

Arkansas clerk issues 1st gay marriage license

A day after Pulaski County Circuit Judge Chris Piazza said the ban was "an unconstitutional attempt to narrow the definition of equality," Kristin Seaton, 27, and Jennifer Rambo, 26, exchanged vows at an impromptu ceremony, officiated by a woman in a rainbow-colored dress.

Christian Reflections on Mental Illness

As I mentioned previously, I think Christians look at the problems represented in mental illness diagnoses and think that they are so extreme in nature that they must be physical problems. A biblical understanding of humanity and the importance of the soul demonstrates that problems do not have to be medical to be serious. Job's overwhelming grief, Saul's murderous rampages, Nebuchadnezzer's deranged behavior, and the ravings of demoniacs in the New Testament are all examples of extreme spiritual problems that medical intervention will never help. Christians must not assume that all serious problems are medical problems.

27 Why did God send Jesus when He did? Why not earlier? Why not later? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Answer: “But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under law” ( Galatians 4:4 ). This verse declares that God the Father sent His Son when “the time had fully come.” There were many things occurring at the time of the first century that, at least by human reasoning, seem to make it ideal for Christ to come then.

The Poetic Wonder of Isaac Watts — Free eBook

“ We all know and love ‘Joy to the World,’ ‘Jesus Shall Reign,’ ‘Alas and Did My Savior Bleed,’ ‘When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,’ ‘O God, Our Help in Ages Past,’ and a host of his other compositions. And yet, most Christians know precious little about the author of these great hymn texts—the man history has dubbed as the ‘Father of English Hymnody.’ At least, until now. Thanks to the prolific and eloquent pen of Douglas Bond, we now have an insightful glimpse into the life, the faith, and the poetic wonder of this remarkable servant of the church: Isaac Watts. This delightful book needs to be put at the top of your must-read list.”

30 Lee Strobel: Different people react in different ways - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

I think people are different. That's why I love dealing with physicians, engineers, teachers, scientists, historians — people who tend to deal with evidence, deal with facts, deal with logic, deal with that which is real versus that which is just imaginary or that which is wishful thinking. So I think different people react in different ways, and I think, as apologists, we need to recognize that. Sometimes we project on other people that they're like us, and so their questions must be our questions, and they must have the same obstacles that I had. But everybody's different, and I find that apologetics is effective in helping many people in their spiritual journey; for others, it's a whole different experience.

The Key Factor in Someone Becoming a Leader

Those are all well and good, but actually those don’t work very effectively. The real way in which mentoring works effectively is through organic relationships. One of the most important things that Christian institutions can do is create the ecosystem of opportunity out of which those relationships can develop. Unlike state-run institutions of learning or public schools in this country, which have a pretty bureaucratic approach to relationships, Christian institutions recognize we’re really about transforming the individual. We’re in this work, not because we’re trying to pass down a certain body of knowledge, but we’re really invested in this young person. I care deeply about this particular student. I’m willing to do whatever it takes to try and help them, if it means helping them get a job, if it means helping them navigate a family issue, if it means helping them learn a subject.

WORLD | Chaos comedy | Megan Basham | May 17, 2014

Allyson’s feelings of unrest and inadequacy require some deep, intensive soul searching, but lacking the time for that, her husband, Sean (Sean Astin), agrees to a shorter-term solution. He and the other dads in their social circle will watch the kids so Allyson and her friends, including their pastor’s wife (Patricia Heaton) can put on high heels and enjoy a girl’s night out. From there, in the grand tradition of one-crazy-night movies, chaos ensues, leading the ladies everywhere from a tattoo parlor to a jail cell.

P.Z. Myers answered my eight questions about what New Atheists really believe. Myers provided his "fast and flippant" answers; yet he provides a fine synopsis of New Atheist atheology. More detailed book-length New Atheist apologetics (Dawkins, Harris, etc) are less fast but no less flippant.

34 An Interview with Daniel B. Wallace on the New Testament Manuscripts - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

What makes this so astounding is that no manuscripts of Mark even from the second century has surfaced. But here we may have a document written while some of the first-generation Christians were still alive and before the NT was even completed. All seven of these manuscripts will be published by E. J. Brill sometime in 2013 in a multi-author book. Until then, we should all be patient and have a “wait and see” attitude. When the book comes out it will be fully vetted by textual scholars…

35 Jesus and the Eyewitnesses: The Gospels as Eyewitness Testimony - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Richard Bauckham and I have been friends for many years and have encouraged each other’s work. I was in St. Andrews University, in Scotland, last July to spend a week with Richard just before a wonderful conference on the Book of Hebrews, and the proofs of this book were sitting on his coffee table. He offered to let me read it, and I did. I realized at once the book’s importance, and Richard himself told me, in his reserved and understated British way, “I think this may be my most important book thus far.” I agree; it is indeed a seminal study, and we may be grateful for it coming now in the midst of so much nonsense being published about early Christianity and its documents.

36 Does Dawkins Really Love Science? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

3.  Retirement is a time in a person’s life when you finally get to focus all your time and attention on your true passion.  This is especially true if the person who retires is both healthy and wealthy.  Dawkins is all three – he has retired, he is healthy, and he is very wealthy.  If his true love really was science, he would use all this free time and money to pursue scientific quests.  For the first time in his life, he could focus on any unanswered question he wanted to.  He would not need to write grants or go to meetings, or play any other of the social games needed to pursue his scientific passion…

37 Open-minded Evangelism - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Here’s a concept I want to offer for your consideration; what if we stopped thinking of evangelism as me telling you about my beliefs, and starting thinking of evangelism as the two of us exploring truth together? Does that undermine the very essence of evangelism? Will that work? First off, why would we even consider doing evangelism like this?

38 Who Decided What Went into the Bible? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Under Roman law new religions were illegal. In its first few decades Christianity was seen as a sect within Judaism. Once it was determined that Christianity was a separate religion, it became illegal to identify as a Christian. So, for the first three centuries of what we now call the Christian Era, it was a crime to be Christian. Persecutions sprang up throughout various parts of the empire. Believers were tortured and sometimes martyred for their faith. In 303, Emperor Diocletian ordered the confiscation of Christian property and churches, and the burning of Scriptures. Believers and their Book had become so inseparable that the way to eliminate Christianity was to eliminate the Bible.

39 How Richard Dawkins and the Battle for the Mind Will Lead to the Next "Great Awakening" - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Scientists at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute have found that when just 10 percent of the population holds an unshakable belief, their belief will always be adopted by the majority of the society. . . . When the number of committed opinion holders is below 10 percent, there is no visible progress in the spread of ideas. It would literally take the amount of time comparable to the age of the universe for this size group to reach the majority," said  Boleslaw Szymanski, the Claire and Roland Schmitt Distinguished Professor at Rensselaer. "Once that number grows above 10 percent, the idea spreads like flame.

40 There Is No Absolute Truth - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

No Truth Means Everything is True, Doesn't It? For some of us, it might seem ridiculous to say that truth does not exist, because we have simply assumed the reality and existence of ‘truth’ since we were very small. But others out there have struggled with the idea that there can be singular, exclusive truth in all areas of life, and if you ask your friends to talk about issues of faith, you will quickly discover that few of them are able to agree on a singular, absolute truth. In fact, many of us have come to the conclusion that there is no one truth about anything. And when we say that nothing is absolutely ‘right’ or ‘true’, we are actually saying that EVERYTHING is ‘right’ and ‘true’! If no one particular idea or reality is true to the exclusion of others that are NOT true, then we have to admit that every idea, notion or reality is equally valid and ‘true’. Something in our intuition tells us that this simply cannot be the case.

My Journey to Truth: A Ratio Christi Student's Testimony - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

As an atheist, I realized my claims about God , immortality, & morality was rendering a certain meaninglessness over life - however this is certainly not how I lived. I lived for political and social projects, I used language like "progress" and "injustice" while simultaneously knowing that if I were pressed to provide a definition to such things, I couldn't give an honest answer for why I believed they existed or even what they meant. Life was lived in two realms: 1) I knew there was a meaninglessness, non-absolute, subjective, and as far as I knew, possibly incoherent habitat for my 'existence,' but 2) I put this knowledge in a box in order to proceed with my own personal meaning. I realized that essentially, I was using some Grand Lie which ascribed unintelligible significance to my relationships and passions and work. As unstoppable meaning-makers, I think a secular person's difficulty is in eventually accepting that any meaning they create is nothing more than a very serious game of make-believe.

44 Gospel Centered Apologetics - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

It is tempting to think that the phrase “Gospel-centred” has lost something of its value in evangelical circles. Perhaps it made sense to talk about “Gospel-centred” ministries, “Gospel centred” discipleship or even “Gospel-centred” marriages. However, when we come close to endorsing “Gospel centred” diets , we might wonder if a trend hasn’t been taken a little too far. This is a shame because it seems that “Gospel centred apologetics”[1] is a biblical ideal; a concept that would remind evangelists and pastors of their priorities in apologetics.

46 Meet the Multiverse - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The realisation that earth is perfectly suited (‘just right’) for the task of playing host to intelligent life has led scientists to call it ‘the Goldilocks planet’. Logically, of course, it should be called the porridge planet, since it was the porridge rather than Goldilocks that was just right, but that’s a detail. Exploration of the solar system has demonstrated the total uniqueness of earth among the otherwise barren solar planets.

47 Some Thoughts on Hell - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Many things occur on this planet that demand judgment and punishment, but many go unpunished. If there is no certainty of punishment, there is no reason not to play the system to get as much an advantage as you can. That is not to say that you can get away with everything but rather that not everything will be punished. So, if you can get away with it, go ahead. You might respond that our moral standards will keep us in line, and while I certainly hold to the reality of objective moral standards, the problem is that if detours from these moral rules are not punished, there is no justice.

49 The Vampire Syndrome - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Really?  I would believe that if society was just as sensitive about other areas of life.  But the truth is that every other area of life has become more public.  People are invited to be as public as they want about their sexuality, politics, culture, economic views and so on.  It is only religion that needs to be hidden from view.  Look at entertainment.  Movies and music have pushed the boundaries of sexuality, becoming far more explicit in every way.  Any time a Christian complains, cries of censorship and freedom of speech become very loud.  If a person requested the same freedom for their religious ideas, they are seen as a bigot and as potentially dangerous.   Has anyone ever wondered why?

God's Not Dead: God Exists: Information, Codes, and Organization

We see evidence of God’s fingerprints in every known corner of the universe. Mankind discovers the proof and affirms many of the facts that the Bible records and announces. The greatest miracle is the resurrection of Jesus. The Lord Jesus is alive! He is the only religious leader to rise from the dead. He is the only one who promised a resurrection and duly kept His promise. You can visit the tombs of all the deceased religious leaders and find their remains still in the grave. However, Jesus is alive because God is not dead.
