When Christian Artists Learn Apologetics

During the first class of the morning at the small Christian college, our professor stopped the lecture and used his walking stick, curiously similar to a wizard’s staff, to step from behind the podium to the front of the class. He did this when he really wanted us to listen.

Rehearsing the Past into the Present

I find that I so quickly forget the ways that God has been my help in the past. I forget the answered prayer. I forget the visible deliverances. I forget the ways that He has always provided in the past. My current circumstances blind me. They drown out all remembrance of God’s past faithfulness to me. I, like David, need to be reminded of verse 9. And I am convinced that there are seasons of life for all of us when we need to be reminded of God’s past faithfulness so that we can be encouraged in the present and not lose heart. When the doctor says that we have cancer; when our marriage falls apart; when our children turn their backs on the Lord; when our lives do not seem to go the way we have planned; when a loved one dies; or when discouragement and frustration in ministry overwhelm us—these are times when we need to be reminded that the God who has been our help in the past will be our help in the present, regardless of what our current circumstances may tell us.

Moral Absolutes and Proof for God

One must not confuse and commingle law and grace: God’s commands with God’s promises (Romans 11:6). The law is not just the Old Testament inasmuch as the Old Testament contains law; furthermore, grace is not just the New Testament for the New Testament contains law. The law demands works and accuses. The law commands and demands. It’s what God expects out of His creatures in our thoughts, words, and works. For it is not the ten recommendations, it is the Ten Commandments. It is rigorous. The law doesn’t say just do the best you can. God does not grade on a curve. The final requires perfection or one does not enter heaven. It demands one hundred percent, every moment, in thought, word, and deed. The good news is Christ has expiated the transgressions against the law for His people by grace through faith. The greatest good news is that Christ has made satisfaction for the sins, the mistakes, and the commandment breaking of His people.

The Historical Reliability of Mark's Gospel

It is impossible to prove that an ancient account is fully reliable, and the very fact that Mark’s Gospel records miracles is enough for some people to reject it as a reliable record. However, provided one is prepared to be open minded about the possibility of miracles, there are a number of arguments that, I believe, combine to indicate the historical reliability of Mark’s Gospel.

Reality Check: Has Science Explained the Origin of Life? | Evolution News

Science has only one testable, reproducible, and verifiable option on the table that can produce significant levels of functional information: intelligent minds. You can test this yourself by sitting down with a piece of paper and writing a short, meaningful paragraph. If you can pull off this feat, then you have just demonstrated that intelligent design can produce significant levels of useful information. Evidence of what intelligent design can do is all around us, from the smartphone in your pocket, to the jets you fly in, to the podcasts you listen to.

New Species of Fossil Dragonfly Named for ID Proponent Michael Behe | Evolution News

A study of the different anatomical features of this fossil and comparison with other fossil odonates revealed a very incongruent pattern of similarities. Such homoplasy is a ubiquitous phenomenon in systematic biology and does not readily align with a hierarchical system required by evolutionary classification. While surprising from the perspective of common ancestry, such incongruences would not be surprising from the perspective of common design. This suggests that the currently ruling paradigm of cladistic classification based on assumed common ancestry should be reconsidered in favor of a traditional phenetic classification based on maximum similarity.

19 Michael Ruse: Christianity and Darwinism as rival religions

Christianity and Darwinism have very different understandings of the nature and causes of war. However, beneath the surfaces, there are some surprising similarities, not the least a debt to Saint Augustine’s claims about original sin. Yes, Intelligent Design Is Detectable by Science | Evolution News

But did Darwin explain away all evidence of apparent design in biology? Darwin attempted to explain the origin of new living forms starting from simpler pre-existing forms of life, but his theory of evolution by natural selection did not even attempt to explain the origin of life — the simplest living cell — in the first place. Yet there is now compelling evidence of intelligent design in the inner recesses of even the simplest living one-celled organisms. Moreover, there is a key feature of living cells — one that makes the intelligent design of life detectable — that Darwin didn’t know about and that contemporary evolutionary theorists have not explained away.

God’s will is not a closed system. It is dynamic! It is not always an issue of choosing A or B. In fact, many times you can choose from A to Z, and any of them will be okay. It’s your choice. Why would God give you a brain and not expect you to use it? He lets you make choices, and he gives you second chances.

Defending Your Faith 101: Sources of Evil and Suffering

“We need to know God’s plan so that we can make sense of tsunamis, fires, cancers, strokes, rapes, tortures, and the fact that, except for the Lord’s return, the only thing that will prevent us from watching everyone we know die will be our own death. If we don’t understand that our good God can have a good purpose in allowing evil, we’ll live confused Christian lives.”

Woman Celebrated For Killing 3.5 Million People

“Your fight for women’s rights and access to healthcare is an inspiration to all of us. Also how you took the idea of killing unborn babies from ‘safe, legal, and rare’ to ‘any time for any reason without apology and SHOUT YOUR ABORTION!’ in one decade! #ThankYouCecile” one woman in New York tweeted along with a picture of the outgoing Planned Parenthood president. “We all owe you an eternal debt of gratitude.” Other tweets and social media posts expressed similar sentiments, with thousands praising Richards’ fierceness, bravery, and cold-blooded brutality.

Faithful Are the Wounds of a Friend

True friends put enough trust in you to tell you openly of your faults. Give me for a friend the man who will speak honestly of me before my face; who will not tell first one neighbor, and then another, but who will come straight to my house, and say, “Sir, I feel there is such-and-such a thing in you, which, as my brother, I must tell you of.” That man is a true friend; he has proved himself to be so; for we never get any praise for telling people of their faults; we rather hazard their dislike; a man will sometimes thank you for it, but he does not often like you any the better.

The Bible teaches, in my view, that divorce is ethical in cases of sexual immorality (Matt. 5:32) or abandonment (1 Cor. 7:25). Abuse makes a home unsafe and constitutes abandonment.

Dirty Rags No More

But what brought a person to ruin in the Old Testament (and it is the same for us today) was not the failure to have the righteousness of sinless perfection. What brought them to ruin was the failure to trust in the merciful promises of God, especially the hope that he would one day provide a Redeemer who would be a perfect righteousness for his people (“The Lord is our righteousness,” Jeremiah 23:6; 33:16). The Old Testament saints knew that this is how they were saved, and that this faith was the key to obedience, and that obedience was the evidence of this faith.

The selfish reason to stay at the same church for a long time — Southern Equip

The longer a church has her pastor the more example there is to follow. It’s one thing for a pastor to prove that the Christian life can be lived for two years in a row, it’s quite nother to prove that it can be lived for 10, 15, or 30 years in a row. It’s one thing to show a group of Christians that you can be a young married man with no kids and manage to pray and study the Bible and seek to live it out, it’s another to do that with multiple children at different stages of life. Can a man live for Jesus after his kids all leave home? Can a man serve the Lord even as he gets close to retirement age? A church with a long-term godly minister will get to watch an example of all of these things in flesh and blood.

4 Ways Satan Uses Christian Generosity for Evil

Western Christians today are the wealthiest Christians in history, and many of them are very generous. It’s estimated  Christians around the world will give $57 billion to global missions in 2017. While we can argue over whether Christians are generous enough, for now let’s agree a lot of money is donated in the name of Jesus, and much of it comes from believers in the West. Whether it’s small-town churches scrapping funds together through bake sales and car washes for a short-term mission trip, or large foundations funding building projects around the world, Christians want to see their money used for good. Yet too often their donations have an unintended effect. I want to introduce you to four ways Satan has used Christian charity for evil. I’ve seen these examples firsthand, and there’s plenty of scholarship to back them up if you wish to do further study on your own. 1. Used Clothing That’s Never Used The secondhand clothing industry is big business—and it destroys African economies. In the United States, you can find used clothes in thrift stores, but these aren’t the primary markets where people buy clothes.

Avengers: Infinity War and Possible Worlds

Marvel Studios has devoted the past decade to developing many of my favorite childhood comics into fantastic movies. They started with Iron man, Thor, and Captain America, and then went on to develop other stars and co-stars within a robust Marvel Universe that, in my opinion, is unrivaled — even by Star Wars! Not only do I love the Marvel super heroes who I grew up with in the comic books, but these recent movies have provided fantastic opportunities to discuss philosophical and theological issues in pop-culture. For example, FreeThinking Ministries has pointed out how Captain America knows that there is only one God … and He does not dress like Thor! Cap also knows of the “law above the law” that can only be grounded in God (See Make America Great ). Tony Stark (Iron Man) has demonstrated how absurd it is to hold a person accountable for their actions when someone else is ultimately in control of their thoughts and actions (See Captain America, Bucky, & Moral Responsibility ).

What to expect when pastoring your first church — Southern Equip

It’s good to be an imperfect, gospel-preaching church, a church that is less than our ideal. It’s good for us to have our preferences to rub up against reality. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t lead with vision and purpose and intentionality, but our leadership should not be that of an impersonal CEO, a hard-charging, arrogant ranch hand, but that kind of ministry that gently, but firmly shepherds.

The Moral Question Behind Infinity War

In  Infinity War , Captain America says, “We don’t trade lives.” He refused to have Vision's life exchanged for others. Yet there came a point in which taking a life (at the person's request and permission) was the only apparent option to save the lives of others. Scarlett Witch destroyed the mind stone, at the request of Vision, which ended his life (even though Thanos turns back time and brings him back temporarily before killing him). And Star-Lord tried to fulfill his promise to Gamora to kill her when she was in the hands of Thanos (even though Thanos turned his laser into bubbles and later killed Gamora himself).
