1 Is Apologetics the Savior of the Church?

“I watched my ex boyfriend fall for this internet atheist stuff, and then wanted to become one of these “enlightened” jerks and spread the word to others. You know, so those Christians could be “free.” He showed it to me unexpectedly (I had no idea what these documentaries were) and it caused me massive sadness and pain. I was raised Christian but I knew nothing about these types of questions. I fell apart. And I would gladly have done the work to find the answers if only I knew there were even answers out there. But God pulled me back in and I went back to church and the Lord brought me to apologetics. I know for a fact that this is essential to the vitality of the church right now. The church has become nothing more than emotional highs, feelings, and an upsetting amount of “dumbing down” for the average Christian. We need to intercept these deceivers and show other Christians that there are answers out there. People make fun of Christians and call them stupid, and we get used to that. But this is not okay. My intention when I talk to someone is not to degrade them, it is to make them embarrass *themselves* and be exposed as the con artists that they are.

5 Actions Churches Should Take in a Changing Legal Culture

These new political, cultural, and legal realities directly affect the church’s freedom to live out its faith. While most church decisions about internal governance or doctrine currently enjoy constitutional protection, churches cannot assume that these protections will stand indefinitely. Maintaining a gospel-centered witness in today’s culture requires not only standing firm on the truths of Scripture, but also taking affirmative steps to protect the church’s freedom to continue peacefully teach and live out its faith.

Heroes or Villains? A Christian Assessment of Hacktivism - Christian Research Institute

Third, the state commands a God-given authority, “the power of the sword,” in order to punish wrongdoers and protect the innocent (Rom. 13:1–7; 1 Pet. 2:25). As such, the civil government must sometimes keep military and other secrets, since public disclosure could aid criminals or foreign enemies. The state sometimes needs to monitor its own citizens secretly, especially in an age of terrorism, more of which is homegrown. This, of course, can be easily abused in the hands of unaccountable power. The NSA has come under heavy attack in this regard, especially since the leaking of documents by Edward Snowden. “The eye-catching success of WikiLeaks will inspire further betrayal of privileged information by government officials, and will increase the dangers to our forces fighting what these reports graphically portray to be an already highly lethal and chaotic war.” 9

Devil With a Cause

All this means that Matt’s drive for justice demands a lot. When he goes out at night to fight crime, it leaves him weak and tired the next day. He quickly runs out of excuses for his black eyes and fat lips. His costume, at this stage, is strictly utilitarian, with no distinguishing emblems or superheroic branding (it “kind of sucks,” one character tells him. “It’s a work in progress,” he admits). Daredevil is in over his head, and he knows it, but he can’t escape a sense of obligation, and that’s where things get very interesting.

The Logic Of Economic Discrimination

Why should big businesses like Apple, Angie’s List, or Salesforce be able to discriminate against an entire state like Indiana, while Christian small-business owners cannot likewise decide who they want to do business with? If Apple can boycott Indiana, why can’t evangelicals boycott same-sex weddings? The reality is that such economic discrimination depends on a complex of freedoms, including but not limited to religious liberty.

Did You Mean to Have All These Kids?

My kids are all teenagers now, so I remember these comments with a smile. They don’t offend me—I understand that most people don’t have a file folder for people with “larger families,” although a family of six is not extraordinarily large. It doesn’t bother me to be mentally filed under “Hillbilly,” “Catholic,” or even “Mormon”—people are just doing their best to process reality. I remember flying to Cincinnati one Christmas with two lap children and two in car seats. A sweet young Mormon couple on the next row carried on a knowing conversation with us for most of the flight before realizing we were actually just Southern Baptists with no sense of moderation. We deplaned leaving them as baffled by our family planning as many of our Baptist friends were.

Don’t Isolate Yourself in Christian Cliques

I would invite you to think about the motives behind your relationships with people. Are you seeking a satisfaction from people, seeking to fit in with the World? Romans 12:2 "Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." We are called not to be conformed by the World, but rather be the Light to the dark world around us. Our motive, as Christians, should be to seek out the lost and show the Love of The Father to them, but we can't just stop there. We can't just give someone a fish to eat, but rather teach them how to fish so that they can live a life of fulfillment. If we walk into social groups will the authority Jesus gave us, we shouldn't be afraid of what this world has to say to us. We have the opportunity to be bold enough to declare our faith in our daily lives to those around us. The centrality of all of our relationships, whether with Christians or non-Christians, should be to show the Steadfast Love of The Father, calling out the identity of who The Father tells them they are, encouraging one another, as iron sharpens iron.

What is God Really Like: Tawhid or Trinity? Dr. Shabir Ally and Dr. Nabeel Qureshi Debate

What is God Really Like: Tawhid or Trinity? Join Dr. Nabeel Qureshi and Dr. Shabir Ally as they debate on "Who Is The Real God? Allah or the Trinity?" moderated by Ms. Julie Roys, host of Moody Radio's "Up For Debate" show. The debate will begin at 6 PM EDT and end at 8 PM EDT. There will be a 30-45 minute Q&A session following the debate.

Getting along through disagreement is never easy. Preserving the freedom to think and learn and grow comes with a cost. But what if the disagreement itself is valuable for us? What if the cost of freedom isn’t what we expect? And how can we all become the kinds of citizens who know how to disagree without it destroying us?

Qureshi is a former Muslim who converted to Christianity through historical reasoning and a spiritual search for God. He and Ally will debate on whether Christianity is correct in its revelation of the Trinity, the triune nature of God, or if Islam is correct in the Tawhid’s proclamation of the oneness of God. There will also be a 30-45 minute Q&A session following the debate.

Do You Believe in Ghosts?

Ghosts. What do you really think about them? If someone pushes us, most will admit a degree of love for scary stories. But what about reports of real ghosts, even by sincere Christians? Few Christians seem to know what to think. If we look to the Scriptures, however, we find solid answers, even on this murky subject.

Winston Churchill Day

The official biography was conceived on a grand scale by Churchill’s son, Randolph, and became even grander when Martin Gilbert was appointed to oversee it in 1968. Sir Martin expanded its scope to include every relevant piece of documentary evidence that could be found in any archive. Under his direction, the official biography reached its full eight volumes of narrative, and 17 of 23 volumes of The Churchill Documents were completed. Together they provide both a rich treasury and a massive resource, carefully indexed and annotated. In 2012, Sir Martin’s declining health required that he turn the project over to Larry P. Arnn, President of Hillsdale College.

This is How Religious Liberty Dies — The New Rules of the Secular Left

The vast high-velocity moral revolution that is reshaping modern cultures at warp speed is leaving almost no aspect of the culture untouched and untransformed. The advocates of same-sex marriage and the more comprehensive goals of the LGBT movement assured the nation that nothing would be fundamentally changed if people of the same gender were allowed to marry one another. We knew that could not be true, and now the entire nation knows.

Salt and Light: A Global Perspective

At the right time, after engaging in friendship and listening to questions, we invite unbelievers to look at Jesus. Seeker Bible Studies are question-based studies for seekers and skeptics, not Christians. They reveal Jesus through the power of God’s Word, not a slick program or gimmick. They invite people who might be turned off by the church but curious about Jesus, to come into our home, where they can be with people like them, people with lots of unanswered questions. The greatest shortcut to evangelism (apart from praying and developing authentic relationships) is focusing on the person of Jesus, because he’s irresistible! Whether or not they become Christians, even the most cynical have been drawn to him.

Are the Benefits of Our New Shaming Culture Worth the Costs?

The law has always had an ambivalent relationship with shame. On the one hand, shaming is the very antithesis of the law. The basic principle of due process holds that a person has a right to contest charges or claims against him to an impartial tribunal before the government may inflict a sanction on him. By contrast, shaming occurs in the absence of due process. While it is triggered by a perceived act of wrongdoing, no one takes responsibility for establishing what happened. Instead, others react, often instinctively and harshly, and often to emphasize their own virtue through their condemnation of someone else’s vice. The upshot is a reaction that looks a lot like mob rule. That is why people can easily be shamed even though they did nothing wrong or not be shamed even though they did do something wrong. It also explains why, as Ronson documents, people are often punished in a way that does not reflect the severity of their conduct. Law displaced shaming because such a chaotic system can do as much harm as good.

Must Christianity change its sexual ethics? History may hold the key (COMMENTARY) - Religion News Service

Christianity confronted the sexual morays in the 1st century in the Roman Empire. Child abandonment was encouraged as well as all the attitudes toward sex that are widespread currently. The Gospel of Jesus Christ met all of these head-on. Many died for their faith because they were labeled atheists for not honoring or acknowledging other pantheons of gods and goddesses. So the confrontation is not one of ignorance on the Christian’s part but the ignorance stems from persons that believe all the unbridled promiscuity is something new that the Christian does not know how to change with it or assimilate it. The Gospel gave dignity to all of life-ecology, women’s rights, just economics and aided in the freeing of attitudes towards slavery. What Christians face today is a revival of this old hedonistic, atheistic and agnostic spirit of the age! We are still prepared through the grace of God and His WORD to speak the truth in love.

30 Events that Shaped the Church

While it may seem a bit unfair to criticize an author for not including a particular event, one has to wonder about the omission of the Pentecostal revival from Gansky’s list. I think most church historians would agree that the Pentecostal revival was one of the most important events in Christian history since the Reformation. Beginning symbolically at Azusa Street in 1906, global Pentecostalism has reshaped Christianity around the world in little more than 100 years. In fact, various estimates suggest that Pentecostals now make up more than one-fourth of all Christians worldwide. They are the fastest-growing segment of Christianity in the world. Ignoring the roots of this movement is unfortunate.

Are Creationists Stupid?

I have merely argued that the belief that God created the universe is rational. However, I do also think it is an over-statement to say that skepticism about all-encompassing claims of Darwinian evolution is anti-science. (not that you were necessarily going quite that far) As Frank likes to say “science doesn’t say anything scientists do.” I don’t know of anyone who questions evolution if it is defined as change over time – however, if defined as a solely unguided process responsible for the full diversity of life forms then I think we’re dealing in a realm beyond what has been scientifically demonstrated. I’m fine with people pointing out how this type of view differs from that of many scientists etc. so long as they don’t just say that all creationists are stupid and evil etc. After all, it is quite healthy to encourage disagreement with whatever scientific theories are accepted at any given time – if no one ever questioned prevailing viewpoints we couldn’t make progress in science.

Death knell for freedom? US moving from 'inclusion' to totalitarianism

Sadly, that is the new message from “inclusive” America. If you don’t want to cater, photograph, preside over, sell pizza at, sell flowers to or otherwise participate in a gay wedding, you will be punished. If you don’t want your business to pay for a kind of birth control that you consider murder, you will pay fines until your business is bankrupt.

Galatians: Selections from Martin Luther -

Martin Luther is a theologian whose writing has changed my life. Luther, in a day when the Church hijacked the message of the Gospel, stood boldly for the proclamation of Christ alone. In a world that literally sold people forgiveness for a few bucks, Martin Luther came onto the scene recovering the message of the scriptures that said, “The price has already been paid.”

Church Clubs Expelled from University of Arizona Religious Council

“The number, seriousness, and pattern of red flags raised compel URC members to no longer believe that Faith Christian Church and its affiliates operate at the highest level of integrity, transparency, safety for students, and respect for students, standards required for URC membership,” said the University Religious Council. “This has come to light via numerous letters and testimonies recently sent to URC members which have brought to a head historic and current concerns related to the campus activities of Faith Christian Church and its affiliates.”

Why Is Evil Necessary? - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

So, you can’t say all aborted babies go to heaven. Because you don’t know that and Romans 9 strongly contradicts what you believe. But, back to the superior morality of aborting babies. If all aborted babies go to heaven, and less than half of those that live to the magical “age of accountability” go to heaven (see Matthew 7:13 and following) it seems to me that abortion is the absolute best evangelical tool conservative Christians have available to them. Who would be so cruel as to force a person to live to the age of accountability and be exposed to a greater than 50% chance of going to hell? Stop fighting the abortionists. They are populating heaven for you. Evangelically speaking, they are kicking your butt. Oh but I forgot, if we abort all babies they won’t get to take their spin on life’s roulette wheel of “glory vs. perdition”. They won’t be blessed with the possibility of living a horrible life of poverty, want, pain, neglect and abuse and then on top of that get to spend eternity in hell because they didn’t get their abstract theology right.

Ask Kevin: What Does "Arsenokoitai" Mean?

It’s quite clear that Paul has coined this word from Leviticus 18 and 20. Even if you don’t know any Greek, you could find online or pull up the Greek transliteration of these two verses. Look at the Septuagint, which is the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible, and then just look at the Greek for the necessary passage in Leviticus 18 and Leviticus 20 and you'll see there (and in fact the words are right next to each other in Leviticus 20) this word for man (“arsen”) and the word for bed (“koitai” or “koite”).

Boomers (ages 50-68) are even more likely to own one at 92 percent, and Elders (older than 69) are more likely yet (95 percent). Overall, the average number of Bibles in Bible-owning households is 4.4; the median number is 3.

Stephenson spoke with The Christian Post to elaborate on that initial statement and explained why he believes Obama's angry with Christianity and could evolve away from the religion.

Kickstarter Seeks to Set World Record with a Photo Mosaic of Nicolas Cages’ Face

Obviously, a plan this big does not come without a cost. With 27 days to go, campaign creator Thom Malone is still $30,000 short of his $52,000 goal, but with the amount of amazing backer-rewards he is offering, there’s no doubt that his goal is achievable. This is important stuff: “If aliens were to ever come to earth, they would need to know who our ambassador is. How best to show aliens that we want peace, but also not to mess with us than with a giant mosaic made up of a million faces to create one giant Nicolas Cage face?” It’s hard to argue with this logic ...

How Miscarriage Led to My Crisis of Faith

God provided comfort through the suffering of his Son. I wasn’t alone in my pain. He wasn’t leaving me to my own. He began to reveal to me that he understood and he loved me dearly. I didn’t have anywhere else to go but to him, and he answered my cry in the wilderness. It was comforting for me to realize that it was okay to be in a wilderness. Jesus didn’t go to the cross cheering and clapping his hands. He was sorrowful—sorrowful for this world and for the pain and separation from his Father he knew he’d have to endure. It was okay to weep. Through my tears I had great hope because I knew that I wasn’t praying to a dead Savior. He rose and was indeed interceding on my behalf.

New covenant believers receive such a fullness of the Spirit that sometimes we struggle to understand the conditions of believers in the old covenant. The Spirit withheld the fullness of His manifestation, and only some experienced a heightened revelation of His goodness. While this was more than sufficient for faith and worship, new covenant believers enjoy the astounding privilege of seeing the almighty God in the face of Jesus Christ. Jesus promised this blessing, and He fulfilled His promise at Pentecost, the unique event at which He poured out His Spirit in rivers of living water to His church.
