The Call to Ministry  is a different sort of book. Or workbook. Or journal. Whatever it is, this resource from The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary is meant to help you discern whether or not God has called you to ministry. And it’s meant for you to use and devour. You’ll notice pages with blank space; those pages are for you to respond to questions, react to the quotations and reflect on the Scripture references you’ll find throughout. So, open your Bible, get out your pen and discover whether God has called you to this most noble and weighty task.

Is Islam a Religion of Peace?

Well, it’s a polarized response. You have two responses I’m seeing in America: You have the people saying, “Islam is a religion of peace. All Muslims are peaceful, loving people. ISIS and the like are hijacking Islam and not representative of Muslims.” I like that response in that it’s compassionate, but I don’t like how it ignores some of the truth. On the other side of the equation, you have people who are saying, “Islam is a violent religion, therefore all Muslims are all threats, therefore let’s keep them out of the country.” That’s a problematic response. It’s completely uncompassionate. It doesn’t distinguish between people and a belief system. But it does at least deal with the truth about Islam. So the title of my book, Answering Jihad: The Better Way Forward , the better way forward is embracing both truth and compassion, truth about Islam but compassion for Muslims.

Pride Doesn’t Always Parade

And the very next verse reads, “While the people of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks on the Sabbath day” (Numbers 15:32). The Man with the High Hand. Sinning “with a high hand” means you know what you’re doing. You know what God thinks, what he loves, what he says, and you decide you know better than him. The sin — large or small — is a middle finger to the Almighty.

Malaysia Rules Muslim Man Can Convert to Christianity

Rebit’s lawyer, Chua Kuan Ching, welcomed the decision and said he hoped that the National Registration Department would not appeal the judgment. “In previous conversion cases involving minors, the courts did not go far enough to state what happens when the child reaches adulthood. So this is a different decision because the judge is saying that he has the right to religious freedom, according to the Constitution.”

• As opening day for the 2015 Major League baseball season draws near, one of the biggest clouds ever hovers over New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez. After defiantly denying in public that he had used banned performance-enhancing substances, baseball’s highest paid player reportedly told federal drug agents and prosecutors behind closed doors that he had indeed used steroids. Rodriguez received immunity from prosecution in exchange for confessing. His admission rang familiar to when Mark McGwire came clean five years ago. McGwire had previously misled Congress about his steroid use, but in the end, he acknowledged he had used the drugs, even as he eclipsed baseball’s single season home run record in 1998 while playing with the St. Louis Cardinals.

God Makes a Meal Out of Messes

This is doubly true in relation to our son with disabilities. I had no category in my brain as a 21-year-old for a family that included a son with a feeding tube. I never contemplated what it might be like to change a g-tube or help him sleep hooked up to his tube all night. How could I have? I don’t know that I’d ever heard of such things. Now we’ve expanded our life to include those sorts of things, along with countless other ways our lives have grown, changed, and become messier since having children.

Midweek Apologetics Hit and Misc: Did God return to the crime scene?

For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.

Selfies and Polaroids of Intimacy

If there is a current animating Warhol’s work, it is not sexual desire, not eros as we generally understand it, but rather desire for attention: the driving force of the modern age. What Warhol was looking at, what he was reproducing in paintings and sculptures and films and photographs, was simply whatever everyone else was looking at, be it celebrities or cans of soup or photographs of disasters, of people crushed beneath cars and flung into trees. In gazing at these things, in rollering them out over curtains of color, in reproducing them endlessly, what he was attempting to distil was the essence of attention itself, that elusive element that everyone hungers for. His study began with stars, with all those heavy-lidded, bee-stung divas, Jackie, Elvis, Marilyn, their faces vacant, stunned by camera lenses. But it didn’t end there. (243–244)

Why Don’t We Punish Women Who Have Abortions?

[T[he almost uniform state policy before Roe was that abortion laws targeted abortionists, not women. Abortion laws targeted those who performed abortion, not women. In fact, the states expressly treated women as the second “victim” of abortion; state courts expressly called the woman a second “victim.” Abortionists were the exclusive target of the law. [...] This political claim [that that women were jailed before  Roe  and would be jailed if  Roe  falls] is not an abstract question that is left to speculation—there is a long record of states treating women as the second victim of abortion in the law that can be found and read. To state the policy in legal terms, the states prosecuted the principal (the abortionist) and did not prosecute someone who might be considered an accomplice (the woman) in order to more effectively enforce the law against the principal. And that will most certainly be the state policy if the abortion issue is returned to the states.

5 Things to Do When God Seems Distant

God honors and often uplifts the quietly faithful, and what's more: He often comes in the quiet. When God tells Elijah to wait before Him on the mountaintop, we witness something remarkable: God doesn't show up where we think He'd appear. He's not in the snapping windstorm, or the earthquake or the blaze. Elijah can't find God's voice in any of them. Then comes a gentle whisper, and it is so divinely flooded that Elijah covers his face with his cloak.

28 http://lukenixblog.blogspot.com/2014/04/frozen-eyewitness-of-no-greater-love.html

Despite the fact that nature reveals the Creator, man's heart remains frozen to His love. Man refuses to give God a foothold in the door. In fact, man's heart is so frozen that the apostles witnessed Jesus' death, the act of true love, but transformation did not take place. Their hearts were frozen harder than Elsa's (she did not need further authentication), so is every other heart of man. Today, people do not have the empirical evidence that the apostles demanded for authentication. But through the successful transmission of the apostles' testimony, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ can be known by those who are removed from the historical event by generations upon generations. It is through the witness of the gospels that we may understand the sacrifice --the act of true love-- that Jesus did for us. Conclusion When I saw the sacrifice that Ana paid for her sister, it brought to the surface the emotion and deep love of mine for my brother and my brother's for me, for "no one has greater love than this: that someone would lay down his life for his friend." For as deep as our siblings' love is for us, the ultimate demonstration of that love will lose its effect when the life they saved passes away.

What are the Top Five Books on the Bible and Homosexuality?

Is God Anti-Gay? , by Sam Allberry (The Good Book Company, 2013). This short book addresses the most common questions often raised about the Bible and same-sex attraction (81 pages). As a result, he writes with commitment to the Scriptures but genuine love for gay people and the church.

30 Speaking the truth about the “Dragon Lady” and sex-reassignment surgery

If we respond with moral censure and alarm to the “dragon lady,” why would we respond differently to someone who wishes to have their reproductive anatomy surgically removed or altered? In terms of consistency, it seems that one would have to either affirm both or oppose both. But to affirm one (sex-reassignment surgery) but to deny the other (ear and nose removal) is a morally inconsistent and indefensible position.

Christian Parents: Your Children Need More Than a Bomb Shelter

Every household has an unspoken “vibe,” the constant background noise generated by our routines and rhythms. That background noise is a kind of imaginative wallpaper that influences how we imagine the world, and it can either be a melody that reinforces God’s desires for his creation, or it can (often unintentionally) be a background tune that is dissonant with the Lord’s song. We need to tune our homes, and thus our hearts, to sing his grace. You could have Bible “inputs” every day and yet still have a household whose frantic rhythms are humming along with the consumerist myth of production and consumption. You might have Bible verses on the wall in every room, and yet the unspoken rituals reinforce self-centeredness rather than sacrifice.

Beyoncé Responds to Anti-Police Accusations, Twirls All Her Haters

I mean, I'm an artist, and I think the most powerful art is usually misunderstood. But anyone who perceives my message as anti-police is completely mistaken. I have so much admiration and respect for officers and the families of officers who sacrifice themselves to keep us safe. But let's be clear: I am against police brutality and injustice. Those are two separate things. If celebrating my roots and culture during Black History Month made anyone uncomfortable, those feelings were there long before a video and long before me. I'm proud of what we created and I'm proud to be a part of a conversation that is pushing things forward in a positive way.

Consider Each Other How to Stir Up Love

Let's read it. Verse 24: "Let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds." Here is the focus for your life. Here is what you aim at from morning till night as a Christian. Notice carefully: it is not what you might expect. It is not: consider how to love each other and do good deeds. That would be Biblical and right. But it's different: "Consider how to stimulate each other to love and good deeds." Focus on helping others become loving people. Aim at stirring up others to do good deeds. And of course the implication would also be that if others need help and stirring, we do too, and so we would be aiming at what sorts of ways we can think and feel and talk and act that will stir each other up to love and to do good deeds. The aim of our lives is not just loving and doing good deeds, but helping to stir up others to love and to good deeds.

Does Islam Need a Luther?

While living in the Middle East, I was profoundly moved by hearing Christians in a closed Muslim country profess love for their country—the same one killing people like them. If these persecuted Christians can feel this way, American Christians can certainly be proud patriots too. Yet the “made in America” stamp pales in comparison to the one that reads “God’s handiwork.” And as Christians we’re taught to love even our enemies (Matt. 5:44), regardless of their citizenship.

3 Quick Reflections on Apologetics Worldwide

Third, Christians have both apologetical and theological questions . In addition to questions on apologetics, many attendees had theological questions such as how human freedom and God’s sovereignty could be reconciled, and how the death of Jesus was sufficient to satisfy God’s justice and mercy. This is again indicative that many believers desire to understand how their beliefs are rationale and defensible.

3 Tips for Reaching the Dechurched

Ministering to dechurched people who are open is relatively easy for believers as there is a level of comfort in discourse. These are people who have left the church, but they aren’t aggressively antagonistic to it. They could have stopped attending after a move when the “never quite found the right church.” Nothing against God or churches; they simply stopped attending.
