Decoding the Jesus Myth

Blake comments: “Some Jesus mythicists say many New Testament scholars are intellectual snobs.” What is meant by this is that mythicists resent the fact that by far the majority of scholars reject the theory and don’t consider it worth responding to. The same kind of comment could be made by flat earthers. Is the problem with those who see the logical conclusions of the evidence or those who hold to a radical skepticism that doesn’t take the evidence seriously. It is worth noting that it is not just evangelical scholars who accept a historical Jesus. Conservatives, liberals, Christians, Jews, Muslims and atheist scholars almost universally accept the evidence for Jesus.

The Surprising Role of Guardian Angels

This means that everything angels do, everywhere in the world, at all times, is for the good of Christians. An angel who does something by God’s assignment anywhere in the world is fulfilling the promise that God will work all things for the good of all Christians — everywhere. This is a sweeping and stunning promise. All angels serve for the good of all Christians all the time. They are agents of Romans 8:28.

How Calvinists Miss the Key to Happiness

In other words, God ensures our joy from two directions. Joy comes out of our hearts because God has first put joy there. God’s purchased joy is our joy. It may seem redundant at first, but one perfectly good way to say it, as Piper does, is this: “Christ-treasuring, blood-bought joy will sustain my joy.” That’s exactly how we Calvinists should speak of happiness.

As Solomon warned, “Of making many books there is no end” (Ecc 12:12). There is no way to read everything, and not everything deserves to be read. I say that in order to confront the notion that anyone, anywhere, can master all that could be read with profit. I read a great deal, and a large portion of my waking hours are devoted to reading.

The Leftist Attacks on Pence’s Moral Guidelines Are a Denial of Human Nature | The Stream

I wish I could say you are wrong, but, while you are blunt, you have valid points. I am surrounded by extreme liberals because of where I live. My actual neighborhood and several in my county house the last of the real conservatives in our geographic reality. I see every day that the only way to have common ground is to only discuss the time or the ballgame scores; and even then, you have to be careful you don’t endorse a Christian coach or player or be ready for the liberal tirade. If you have a cross on your earrings or the wrong bumper sticker on your car, watch out for trouble. I don’t back down, but I often keep my words to myself and just be Christian in my actions. It may not ever come in handy to be trusted in spite of my opposing views, but it may. If nothing else, it’s good practice for allowing the enemies of God to tell me their battle plans so I know where to most effectively strike when the Lord calls me to battle in word or deed. I treasure your ability to speak boldly, with a grain of salt. You remind me of the tough Uncle I never had. Or ma

Christian Apologetics - What Is Christian Apologetics?

Christian apologetics represents the serious and sustained engagement with ‘ultimate questions’ raised by a culture, people group, or individual aiming to show how the Christian faith is able to provide meaningful answers to such questions. Where is God in the suffering of the world? Is faith in God reasonable? Apologetics clears the ground for evangelism, just as John the Baptist prepared the way for the coming of Jesus of Nazareth. …Evangelism…issues a personal invitation: ‘You are invited to the feast! Please come!’ Apologetics lays the ground for this invitation; evangelism extends it. Both are an essential part of the mission of the church

The Origins of Aggressive Atheism

TIM STRATTON: Hi. My name is Tim Stratton. I’m a Reasonable Faith Chapter Director here in Kearney, Nebraska. About ten years ago I was hired here at the Kearney Evangelical Free Church to be the Youth Pastor to work with high school and college students. I started Life Group - a Bible study - for young men. It didn’t take long for me to realize that although I was passionate about sharing the Gospel and telling people about Jesus many young people were having a hard time accepting it, having a hard time believing it. In fact, one young man who was the son of an elder at the church became an atheist in front of my face. He came up to me after a couple of years of being in my Bible study and said, “Tim, I’m not coming back to youth group this year. I’m not coming back to Bible study either.” I said, “Why?” He said, “I’m an atheist now.” And I said, “You know that is not true!” He said, “No, I don’t know that, Tim. I really don’t think God exists.” And I said, “You know that’s not true!” And he said, “I don’t know that, Tim. I’ve been reading Richard Dawkins and Stephen Hawking and Sam Harris and Christopher Hitchens over the summer.

Are We Justified in Holding Beliefs Based on Testimony? | Stand to Reason

So, are testimonially-grounded beliefs justified? If so, how is justification conferred upon them? It seems intuitive that the mere fact we acquire beliefs through testimony does not provide grounds for its justification. It is quite possible, indeed is actually the case in many instances, that the person attesting is simply mistaken in their account. In other cases, the attester may be lying and deliberately trying to deceive. Thus, it seems clear that some further grounds for justification is required for testimony.

The Hardest Battle: Veterans, Suicide, and the Struggle for Identity

The hardest thing about being a Marine isn’t boot camp, it isn’t life in the fleet, it’s not even the separation from loved ones for grueling months on end during deployment — it’s letting go of being identified primarily as a Marine. The entire rite of passage of becoming a Marine is one that is strikingly akin to a type of holiness — being drawn out. Life in active duty is a perpetual process of remaining drawn out, adhering to the Marine’s strict code of regulations for haircuts, for how to speak, salute, dress, and so on.

Who Comes to Steal, Kill, and Destroy?

John 10:10 is part of a larger discourse that mentions other thieves, a flock, and a good shepherd. It’s tempting to identify the thief simply by referring back to John 10:1, which says that whoever does not gain access to the sheep by the door (Jesus), but tries to reach them some other way, is “a thief and a robber.” It’s a true answer, but an incomplete one. There are other identifying markers. In 10:5, the sheep are wise enough to not follow the voice of a “stranger.” In 10:8, all those who came before Jesus, pretending to hold the role of chief shepherd, were “thieves and robbers.” And in 10:12, wolves, like thieves, come to scatter the flock.

Does Dating Prepare Us for Marriage — or Divorce?

Dating is an intentional pursuit of marriage, not casual preparation for it. Unfortunately, many of us are being told we must date early and often if we ever want to be ready for marriage. For instance, one popular Christian dating book reads, “Dating is an incubator time of discovering the opposite sex, one’s own sexual feelings, moral limits, one’s need for relationship skills, and one’s tastes for people.” Sounds practical and reasonable on the surface. Until you think about putting yourself (or your daughter) into someone else’s “incubator” for a few months, or years, while he or she tries out their “sexual feelings” and “moral limits.” We put too much of ourselves at risk in dating to donate our hearts to someone’s romantic experiment.

Jesus Will Lead You Through the Valley: Loving a Spouse Through Depression

But there are no magic wands, no silver bullets. Even the gospel may ring dull in her ears for now — that most glorious truth that the God of all creation would love her so much that he would send his only begotten and most dearly beloved Son to take on human flesh for her can fall flat. That the King of the universe took on the form of a servant, was tempted and tried yet remained perfect, was betrayed and beaten yet remained steadfast, and had the wrath of hell poured upon him and was killed so that we might have his righteousness may not stir her soul as you would hope.

Parsonage and Prophecy

However, it was the management of the clerical household, not the theological defense of clerical marriage and an egalitarian lay priesthood, which survived into later generations as the most defining feature of this new form of female ministry. Unlike both convents and parish guilds, it was a role which by definition required a male presence, making an exception rather than a rule out of the consecrated single life—as practiced by Margaret Blaurer, who dedicated herself to serving the poor in the world (and whom Martin Bucer, Wibrandis's last husband, repeatedly tried to marry off), or Zell herself, who in her youth headed up an informal group of women devoted to practicing the means of grace. (Although some convents remained open for generations as Lutheran "boarding houses" when their nuns refused to leave, single-sex devotional groups were otherwise less prominent.)

Jesus Is A Myth, Just Like President Kennedy | Cold Case Christianity

There are lots of skeptics who try to deny the historicity of Jesus just because he allegedly shares some similarities with gods or mythologies that pre-date him . Truth be told, the similarities related to Jesus are more fiction than reality , but even if they were all true (like those I’ve listed related to Kennedy and Lincoln), the mere existence of similarities does not invalidate the historicity of Jesus (or Kennedy, for that matter). If we’re prepared to say that Jesus is a myth just because he shares a few characteristics, we better be ready to tell the world that there was never a president named John F. Kennedy.

Preaching in a secular age — Southern Seminary Magazine

In a secular age, preaching will be met with one of three responses. First, we will find ourselves preaching in a context of hostility. At least in the immediate future, much of this hostility will look like cultural marginalization. Those who listen to us will now do so by paying social capital, not gaining social capital — a cultural situation notably different from our grandparents or even our parents. Second, our preaching will also often be met with befuddlement. For many among the intellectual elites, Christian preachers are not an object of derision as much as they are creatures of oddity. The plausibility structures of society are so different from our own that many people simply cannot understand us. Finally, we will find that we will not only be met with hostility and befuddlement, but also indifference. Many in our society will not even care enough about our message to spend their energy attacking us.

Chemical Weapons Attack in Syria Kills at Least 58, Many of Them Children

Reports are coming in that at least 58 people are dead in what witnesses call a chemical weapons strike in northern Syria. Doctors in the rebel-held town of Idlib are reporting that victims have started to choke, vomit and faint with foam coming out of their mouths. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights says that, so far, 11 of the victims are children, and cautioned that the death toll could rise. Dr. Shajul Islam tweeted pictures of the patients, saying  he believed they were victims of sarin gas and asking “Will anyone care? Who will stop it?” Pictures were also posted of rescuers spraying victims with hoses, in a desperate gamble to save their lives. You can see some of the images here , but be warned, they are graphic and disturbing.
