1 Is Jesus Simply a Retelling of the Horus Myth? | Cold Case Christianity

What if I told you there was once an ancient religion whose God was conceived by a virgin named Meri and had a stepfather named Seb (Joseph)? What if I told you this God was born in a cave and his birth was announced by an angel, heralded by a star and attended by shepherds? He attended a special rite of passage at the age of twelve (although the ancient texts describing this God are silent about His life from the age of 12 to 30). At 30 years of age, this God was baptized in a river (His baptizer was later beheaded). He had 12 disciples, performed miracles, exorcized demons, raised someone from the dead, and even walked on water. They called Him “Iusa”, the “ever-becoming son” and the “Holy Child”. He delivered a “Sermon on the Mount”, and his followers recounted his sayings. He was transfigured on a mount and eventually crucified between two thieves. He was buried for three days in a tomb and rose from the dead. His followers called Him “Way”, “the Truth the Light”, “Messiah”, “God’s Anointed Son”, “Son of Man”, “Good Shepherd”, “Lamb of God”, “Word made flesh”, “Word of Truth”, “the KRST” or “Anointed One”.

What Place Do Miracles Have in Apologetics? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Do miracles prove God or does the existence of God prove that miracles happen? What place do miracles have in apologetics? In discussing miracles, the “value project” is a discussion of the evidential merits of miracles.  This can be subdivided into the “basis” question which looks at the evidence that miracles have indeed occurred and the “use” question which asks what religious beliefs are supported by said basis.  There are two principle approaches to addressing the value project: the bottom-up approach and the top-down approach.  While there are winsome and compelling advocates of both approaches in Christian apologetics, this essay will argue the case that the latter, the top-down, is preferable.

Why My Children Study at Reformation Bible College

There are not just different reasons why people go to college, but different legitimate reasons. There are in turn perfectly appropriate reasons why some people don’t go to college. I am not of the mind that anyone’s mind is wasted if it has never matriculated, or doesn’t know what matriculated means. As such, there is no one size answer fits all. What follows may sound something like a commercial. I apologize for that—it flows less from being a faculty member, and more from being a grateful parent.

Advice for Christian apologists from Blake Giunta (TreeSearch.org)

You want to let the other guy talk as much as he wants in a debate. Ignore all the insults and red herrings, and pick the one or two points that you can refute the most easily – e.g. – because they are self-refuting, break the laws of logic, contradict known science, or are not admitted by atheist scholars. Refute one or two points using the strongest authorities you can, and let the rest slide. Let your opponent continue. You should convey the attitude that you don’t care about winning, and that you are not really concerned by anything they are saying because you’ve heard it all before and it doesn’t bother you. As you study and debate more and more, that will actually be the case.

8 What Can We Do to Deepen the Cultural Conversation about Christianity? - Stand to Reason Blog

Out of curious nature, I very often immerse myself in religious blogs, and without a doubt, they will always default back to the same basic arguments that have been debated a million times: The universe needs an immaterial mover, Jesus rose from the dead because the gospel writers were ready to die for their beliefs, morality cannot exist without God, atheism leads to communism/nazism versus God is immoral genocidal dictator, there is no proof of the supernatural, God of the gaps does not work as an argument, communism is political religion not atheist philosophy etc. This is one of the reasons I find the atheism versus Christianity debates nowadays usually so tedious, and have been more interested recently in finding about the philosophical differences between various groups of Christianity for example in regards to evolution and Darwin and the differences between various secular ideologies.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: Welcome to the Finger-Wagging Olympics

Moral outrage is exhausting. And dangerous. The whole country has gotten a severe case of carpal tunnel syndrome from the newest popular sport of Extreme Finger Wagging. Not to mention the neck strain from Olympic tryouts for Morally Superior Head Shaking. All over the latest in a long line of rich white celebrities to come out of the racist closet. (Was it only a couple days ago that Cliven Bundy said blacks would be better off picking cotton as slaves? And only last June Paula Deen admitted using the “N” word?)

Hundreds of kidnapped Nigerian school girls reportedly sold as brides to militants for $12, relatives say

Samson Dawah was nervous. For two weeks, he had waited for any bit of information regarding his niece, who was among the 234 Nigerian school girls likely kidnapped by the terrorist group Boko Haram. This week, he gathered his extended family. He had news but also an unusual request. He asked that the elderly not attend. He wasn’t sure they could bear what he had to say.

Crowning the dragon

Your selective memory is showing, 4.4 million jobs were lost in Bush's last year in office, if you hold the previous President responsible for the first year or so of the next term, which most economists do based on the budgets se the year prior, the administrative effect of the previous year, the policies of the previous year etc. you can also add another 2.6 million job losses that took place in 2008. I see you neglect the loss of 800,000 jobs per year in 2007 President Bush inherited a $236 billion budget surplus from President Clinton. But for the first two-and-a-half years of his term, between February 2001 and August 2003, job growth in the economy was under water America lost jobs consistently every month with only three exceptions. It was not until September 2003, with 109,000 jobs added, that the economy would finally start to pick up. I'd say you playing in the deep end isn't exactly your forte'. The deficit as it sits is doing what? Where is the market? Housing starts? Your simplistic approach to blame Obama belies a simplistic and biased approach to all things economic. As a note for your further discussions, the deficit is now at 514 Billion or 3% of the GDP, but I wouldn't wish to concern you with present day facts that wouldn't fit your political point of view.

A quick guide to family worship

The key is to start small and finish big. The truth is your home is like a little church . Christian parents can lead their home in family worship. It’s really not that hard. Teaching your kids about your faith and sharing in a time of family worship isn’t just for trained theologians or pastors with kids. It’s for all of us, including single parents, working parents, and parents who are new to the faith. Trust me, if my wife and I can make time to do it, you can do it, too.

How Oklahoma's Botched Execution Affects the Death-Penalty Debate

In killing Clayton Lockett this way, state officials thus elevated a convicted murderer to a status he surely did not deserve in life or would have ever obtained had his execution been preceded by acceptable levels of due process. Lockett was not an innocent man who had been framed by the police, ignored by his attorney, or railroaded by a bigoted judge or jury. If we are to have a death penalty in this country, he was a suitable candidate. But in its zeal to kill him, in its frustration about the delay in meting out punishment, Oklahoma turned him into a symbol.

Grace to You

When Christ told His apostles, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you” (John 13:34), He had just washed their feet as an example of agape- love. The apostles were self-centered, quarrelsome, envious of one another, and even sometimes challenged the Lord. Yet Jesus always did for them what was for their good. And this is how He wants all of us who claim to follow Him to show love—even for our enemies.

Heaven Is Real; Hallucinations Are Not

send to a friend #23  Posted by Mulugeta Degaga  |  Tuesday, April 29, 2014at 12:44 PM Again thank you John On this matter of people going to heaven is a very dangerous road, Satan the enemy of truth will do any thing for people to abandon the word of God. Let me put few points why these false claim is around, First is to make christians to focus on what they see and feel not on the promise of the Bible like we don't wait for the coming of Jesus christ we can go now and see him,you see that rather than waiting for the LORD ignoring all sorts of warning (Let no man deceive you by any means....2 Thessalonians 2:3,10-12) Second thing it vilolates God's order God has a time for every thing he does when he wills it mocks God and shows to the world that God is trying to convince people by showing them the flame of Hell and the goodness of heaven rathe than the revealed truth, Third one and I htink the big failure id totally abandon the ministry of the Holy Spirit what is the Spirit doing now convciting hearts and changing life it short circuit that.

God's Not Dead: The Incarnation of Jesus Christ: God in the Flesh

Jesus as the Son of Man and the Son of God has two natures found in one person—Christ is God the Great I AM in human flesh (Exodus 3:14; John 8:58). The Bible reveals the dual nature of Christ and humanity’s salvation demands that be the case. It’s a mystery, but a mystery that in selected ways not only makes sense, but is necessary for redemption. Jesus, in the incarnation, did not lose His divinity. He did not lose His authority or His deity. He voluntarily came to the earth as a human baby to live perfectly as He fulfilled the Law—He took on our humanity in order to die in our place (Isaiah 53:4-6; 2 Cor. 5:21; and 1 Pet. 2:24). All the newfangled views of Christ fail to overturn such truths.

Beware the Dangerous Heresy of Michael Bird!

Apparently this Michael Bird fellow – along with other heresiarchs like Craig Blomberg, Michael Licona, Darrell Bock, and Kevin Vanhoozer – has committed the heinous heresy of advocating genre criticism.  Yes, by asserting that the Bible contains “genres,” this Bird fellow has become himself the devil’s concubine, an incarnation of pure Machiavellian evil, seducing young sterile minds with this filth spewed forth from the bowels of hades and hell. Now the word “genre” is French and we all know that the French are socialists and all socialists are also atheists. So its not wonder that this French fried garlic soaked frog souffle of error called “genre” will necessarily encroach upon the truth of Holy Scripture whenever it is allowed. Oh, my friends, the days are evil, apostasy sallies us from all sides, the kingdom of God is indeed suffering violence, ETS allows in women, Rob Bell is touring with Oprah, the Russians are in the Ukraine, Democrats are in the White house, Fox News ratings are falling, Left Behind sales are plummeting, and poor people are being given government subsidized healthcare! No wonder that the Rapture Index is off the chart! Oh Saint Ronald of Reagan, please intercede for us and petition the Holy Father to send swarms of carnivorous panda bears and battalions of mutant koala bears to devour our enemies.

5 moves to integrate theology into your ministry

Being in ministry means learning to live with the disappointment of people. Sometimes you will genuinely let them down because of your shortcomings and failures, and sometimes they will have unrealistic expectations. If you build your ministry on yourself and on your abilities, this disillusionment — both yours and theirs — will be crippling. If, on the other hand, you show them that Jesus is the only one who never disappoints, that our hope is in him and that he alone is our standard and our strength, then their hope rests on Christ alone. Talk constantly about Jesus, about his attributes and about his grace and truth. We see more of God’s glory in Christ than Moses ever saw on Sinai. Jesus is lovely and he is ours.

Restoration in the South Bronx

Contemplating that scenario ultimately instigated my desire to plant Restoration Church in the South Bronx. I read Matthew 9:36, and I was completely broken. God moved me to understand his grace in a way that I never had before. I began to see the people as Jesus sees them. Because of the real and hard circumstances in our neighborhood, we simply do not see hope or help as viable options. Then God opened my eyes to an incredible truth. Grace is hard to extend if it has never been received. Because the everyday difficulties of living in the South Bronx are indeed real and hard, it's challenging to grasp God's grace when life is seemingly absent of grace or second chances. We need someone to point us toward the real hope and help we so desperately need. I knew immediately that God was calling me to say, "Yeah, I know how you feel, but take a look at Jesus. Do you see what I see?"

4 Reflections About Online Dating

In this context, it's easy to say you're waiting for God to work, but in reality you believe that you are making things happen. Of course, I hope what you've read so far shows you that this kind of thinking gets you nowhere. Online dating is a beautiful expression of, and by no means a replacement for, God's sovereignty. I firmly believe I would have fallen in love with my wife no matter where we met. It could have happened anywhere, at any stage of our lives. But it didn't. Until it did. In the fullness of time, out of the overflow of his mercy, God was pleased to bring it about. I couldn't make it happen. God could, and he did. Praise God!

WORLD | A pox on Mother’s Day? | Marvin Olasky | May 3, 2014

Her article’s only redeeming social value is its undermining of the case that abortion is not evidence of sin but merely evidence of the need for societal restructuring—that income redistribution, free day care, and different work schedules would make abortion obsolete. Marcotte wrote: “let me just put a stop to this s___ right now. You can give me gold-plated day care and an awesome public school right on the street corner and start paying me 15% more at work, and I still do not want a baby. I don’t particularly like babies. They are loud and smelly … time-sucking monsters with their constant neediness. No matter how flexible you make my work schedule, my entire life would be overturned by a baby. I like my life how it is, with my ability to do what I want when I want. … I like sex in any room of the house I please. I don’t want a baby.”

Glenn Beck preaches Mormon theology at Liberty University - On Faith & Culture

I suggest you check your facts again, Sir. Liberty is an accredited university. In 2009, it received level VI accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). Its Law Program is accredited by the American Bar Association (ABA) As for job searching, I can attest that in my case, having Liberty U on my resume was one of the reasons my boss was interested in me. As a graduate of Liberty, I have received what is considered a well paying job for someone fresh out of college. I work alongside a federal law enforcement agency. Yes, the school leans conservative. If you show me a truly bias school, I’ll eat my hat. First, I’ll make sure it is an edible hat, made out of yellow possibly, but then I’ll eat it. I’m not saying Liberty is for everyone or that I agreed with everything taught/supported there, but given the choice again, I do it all again in a heartbeat!

Sex, Millennials, and the Church: Five Implications - ThomRainer.com

I am not a millennial or a boomer, but I am a Christian. As a progressive minded pastor, I still believe that old adage, hate the sin but love the sinner. I further believe that we all make choices in this life, and all of our choices may not be accepted by everyone, never-the-less, they are our choices. Everyone does not accept the choices that people in same sex relationships have made; however, that’s their choice. I welcome people to worship at our church, regardless of their skin color or sexual persuasion. I strongly believe that if they keep coming, eventually they will see, hear or feel something from the power of God’s presence to make them want a life-style change; which again, is their choice. No, I don’t condone same-sex relationships, but I realize that sin is sin and all sin stinks in the nostrils of God so I pray for all who I perceive sin before God, including myself.

Timothy Keller: Radical truthfulness about who we are - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Love without truth is sentimentality; it supports and affirms us but keeps us in denial about our flaws. Truth without love is harshness; it gives us information but in such a way that we cannot really hear it. God's saving love in Christ, however, is marked by both radical truthfulness about who we are and yet also radical, unconditional commitment to us. The merciful commitment strengthens us to see the truth about ourselves and repent. The conviction and repentance moves us to cling to and rest in God's mercy and grace.
