Christian Apologetics - What Is Christian Apologetics?

Christian apologetics represents the serious and sustained engagement with ‘ultimate questions’ raised by a culture, people group, or individual aiming to show how the Christian faith is able to provide meaningful answers to such questions. Where is God in the suffering of the world? Is faith in God reasonable? Apologetics clears the ground for evangelism, just as John the Baptist prepared the way for the coming of Jesus of Nazareth. …Evangelism…issues a personal invitation: ‘You are invited to the feast! Please come!’ Apologetics lays the ground for this invitation; evangelism extends it. Both are an essential part of the mission of the church

9 When Life After College Doesn’t Look Like You Thought It Would

I wonder if getting graduation announcements in the mail or seeing your little sister or brother cross that stage is forcing you to face what the reality of your life has been since graduation. I know this time of the year does that for me. Whose life actually turned out how they planned it? Who has the job or spouse or house they thought they would at this point?

How Calvinists Miss the Key to Happiness

In other words, God ensures our joy from two directions. Joy comes out of our hearts because God has first put joy there. God’s purchased joy is our joy. It may seem redundant at first, but one perfectly good way to say it, as Piper does, is this: “Christ-treasuring, blood-bought joy will sustain my joy.” That’s exactly how we Calvinists should speak of happiness.

As Solomon warned, “Of making many books there is no end” (Ecc 12:12). There is no way to read everything, and not everything deserves to be read. I say that in order to confront the notion that anyone, anywhere, can master all that could be read with profit. I read a great deal, and a large portion of my waking hours are devoted to reading.

Lament Like a Christian Hedonist: How Joy in God Bears Real Pain

God has his own perspective. And that perspective is a divine perspective — eternal and omniscient. Our perspective is necessarily far more limited. Not only are we limited to our own two eyes, but we also have further limitations from the damage of our sin. So it ought not surprise us that many of the greatest realities in this universe are mysterious to us, little as we are. And God loves us enough to remind us of just how little we can see now.

When it comes to gender issues, Christians today usually find ourselves in a corrective or even a defensive posture.

Christians Must Fight to Protect Truth—Now, More Than Ever

Ed Stetzer, a professor at Wheaton College, wrote an article recently called, “ Facts Are Our Friends : Why Sharing Fake News Makes Us Look Stupid and Harms Our Witness.” Stetzer claims that, essentially, when Christians accept fake news, false facts or worse “alternative facts,” we drive a wedge between us and the people we are supposed to reach. Worse still, when we use our own “facts” based on our desires to do something—even if it is good—we are falling short of who God calls us to be (we’re simply lying).

Apologetics: For followers, skeptics, or both?

I recently came across a post on another site--well, a question within a post--concerning the frustrations of those involved in apologetics.  The writer asked how to deal with those individuals that do not see the need for apologetics, fellow followers per se'.  After many comments and words of encouragement, it dawned on me, should we be frustrated with other followers for not showing an interest in apologetics?  Besides, isn't apologetics, by definition, to give a reason, or defense for the hope we have?  Why are we giving reasons or a defense to those professing followers?  Why the frustration?  Is apologetics for followers, skeptics, or both?

Detox Your Soul

My heart is always the first thing in desperate need of a detox. I have learned that we can’t effectively fight the Lord’s battles in the world while neglecting the ones in our hearts. Countless times I’ve tried to advance in haste or self-righteousness, not realizing until later that it’s my own heart that I’m fighting. I must go to my knees to stop, repent, and reset. When times are tumultuous and emotions high, we must be particularly vigilant about sin creeping in.

How to Defeat Modern Day Atheism With Three Easy Questions

So this is how you validate atheism in one easy step: Ask the god-believer to produce actual, credible, real world evidence of this god. He will never do it. He will always engage in word games employed to try to conjure up his god – while never even attempting to produce actual, relevant, empirical evidence of any god. He will talk about everything else under the sun, engage in rhetorical trickery, misdirection (red herring), misrepresentation (i.e., straw man criticism of atheism), all based on denying obvious facts about reality (like the problematic nature of “eyewitness testimony,” and the subjective nature of subjective beliefs about imaginary things making you feel good), while never getting around to producing any actual evidence of any god – oh, and then, a lot of times you even get the religious apologist who specifically employs some sort of “Divine Hiddenness” argument to try to pretend that his god arranged things deliberately that we would not have any actual evidence of its existence because religious faith (i.e., believing in the god based on faith, not evidence) is a virtue, believing without evidence is a virtue, and doubt (i.

Was Calvin a Christian Hedonist?

But yet their sorrow was such as did not prevent the joy of which the Apostle speaks. As poverty is deemed an evil, the plunder of their goods considered in itself touched them with grief; but as they looked higher, they found a cause for joy, which allayed whatever grief they felt. It is indeed thus necessary that our thoughts should be drawn away from the world by looking at the heavenly recompense; nor do I say any other thing but what all the godly find to be the case by experience. And no doubt we joyfully embrace what we are persuaded will end in our salvation; and this persuasion the children of God doubtless have respecting the conflicts which they undertake for the glory of Christ. Hence, carnal feelings never so prevail in overwhelming them with grief, but that with their minds raised up to heaven they emerge into spiritual joy.

The 5 Most Misused and Abused Bible Verses

However, Christians often misunderstand, misquote or misuse verses in the Bible. For example, we may turn to the concordance in the back wanting to find a verse on a particular subject, read the ones suggested, find a favorite one, and then start quoting away!

‘Get Out’ Locks Our Gaze on Racism’s Horror

Indeed, laughter and screaming are frequently indistinguishable in black comedy and satire, comic sensibilities that are very familiar to horror fans. Think of the moral force of Jonathan Swift’s icy satire, “A Modest Proposal,” which famously recommended that poor Irish families supplement their meager incomes by selling their children as a particularly exotic form of cuisine to the nation’s wealthiest citizens. Though it may seem like a long way from Swift to a contemporary horror film, I’d argue that few stories address the subject of racism with the force and moral urgency of Get Out .

This is what separates Jesus Christ from every other leader of every other faith. Other leaders have said, “I’m looking for the truth” or “I’m teaching the truth” or “I point to the truth” or “I’m a prophet of truth.” Jesus comes and says, “ I am the truth.”

The Other Billy Graham Rules

But most reports have neglected to mention that there’s not just one Billy Graham rule. There are four. They deal with money, sex, power, and lies and were part of something known as the Modesto Manifesto . Set up in the 1940s, the rules were meant to keep Graham and his organization away from the pitfalls that have taken down American celebrity preachers since the days of Henry Ward Beecher and Aimee Semple McPherson .

The Heart of Worship

You are salt of the earth. So if you were to ask me, “What is the salt? What is tangy?” For you are the light of the world, verse 14. So we have got salt and we have got light flowing from “Rejoice in the day that you are persecuted because you can be satisfied not with that, but with your reward in heaven.” I would say, “If you show me somebody like that, somebody who in the midst of suffering, in the midst of criticism, in the midst of conflict has a demeanor of inner, deep, quiet, strong, satisfaction in God and the rewards that are coming, I would say that is the saltiest, brightest thing I have ever seen in my life.” That tastes so different than the world that there is only one explanation for that — God. I think that is what it means. And so when you get to verse 16 where it says, “Let your light so shine before men,” I think it means deeds done out of that kind of heart get glory for God and not for you. The kind of heart is in rejoicing in my reward, not in being liked by other people. I am rejoicing in my reward, not in health. I am rejoicing in my God, my reward — Christ. Not a good job, not ministry going well, not kids walking in the paths of righteousness.

Book Review: The Risen Jesus and A Future Hope

The Risen Jesus And A Future Hope is a great book in which the Dr. Gary Habermas defends the bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ and shows the practical implications of the truth of the claim. Dr. Habermas split the book into the two sections respectfully. Habermas begins his defense by laying a few foundations in Chapter 1. The first foundation is the inductive nature of the study of history. He then discusses the difference between miracles and miracle-claims. He cautions against accepting a priori (prior to evidence) conclusions. He then provides classical arguments against miracles (David Hume) and responds to the arguments. He then provides the 12 facts related to the death and/or claimed resurrection that the majority of critical scholars accept. Habermas makes clear an intention in this book. He is not providing a thorough defense for truth of these claims, he is only using them as part of his argument because they are accepted by the majority of critical scholars. He makes the point that if the reader wants to thoroughly investigate the reasons for even critics to accept the truth of these claims, they should refer to the material of the critics.

How Apologetics Serves Evangelism in Our Post Christian Culture

Thinking this morning about where our culture has been and where it is going, I could not help pondering about the church’s effectiveness in this post Christian culture in reaching those without Christ. Our culture has taken on a different face, very quickly, as a result of a judicial fiat decision. Should we do anything differently in our evangelism?  Has anything really changed?

A Practical Guide to Culture: Helping the Next Generation Navigate Today's World: John Stonestreet, Brett Kunkle: 9781434711014: Books

I wish John Stonestreet and Brett Kunkle had written A Practical Guide to Culture years ago. As a parent and youth pastor, I was often concerned about the impact the culture might have on my children and students, and I wasn’t always sure how to address the challenges. John and Brett have written a hopeful, engaging book that will prepare parents, educators, and youth leaders to equip young minds. This isn’t just a survey of culture; it’s an active, purposeful, and thoughtful action plan. If you want your students and children to represent Christ in a fallen world as they thrive in their Christian walk, A Practical Guide to Culture is an essential guide.

The Laws of Logic Require God: The Work of Frege pt 1

When You’ve Been Wronged

But as we consider unity and oneness, we cannot avoid the reality of evil and injustice in our world. We may think about this from an individualistic perspective, like when our spouse cheats on us or our employer demotes us or our friends turn their backs on us. But we also may think about it from a collective standpoint, such as the perspectives of indigenous people, African Americans, Japanese Americans, refugees, and so many others. In the United States, we remember those who have suffered great offenses in this country but have not been extended a full apology or an offer of reconciliation. In a global context, we remember survivors of the Holocaust and the Rwandan genocide, and we remember the stories of Syrian refugees, and so many others.
