No-Fault Divorce Led to Confusion about Marriage - Stand to Reason Blog
This article caught my eye – a movement to change no-fault divorce laws. We began tinkering with traditional marriage decades ago, and some of the force behind the case for same-sex marriage is drawn from ideas introduced to make divorce easier in the 60s. One of the key ideas: Marriage is about love. So when spouses fall out of love, they should be able to end their covenant easily, rather than show a sufficient reason for the instability to the individuals and society divorce causes. It was a fad 40 years ago for marriage vows to end with "as long as we both shall love." And now the argument is made that the government shouldn't prevent people who love each other from getting married.
Tim McGrew explains how undesigned coincidences affect textual reliability
Undesigned coincidences in the Gospels … is an argument that was well-known in the nineteenth century but has, for no really clear reason, simply been forgotten as time has gone on. It is a cumulative case argument that the Gospels reflect, to an important extent, independent knowledge of actual events. Please note that this argument is quite independent of one’s preferred answer to the synoptic question. That is to say, even if, e.g., Mark was the first Gospel and others had access to Mark and show signs of literary dependence on Mark, the argument from undesigned coincidences provides evidence for independent knowledge of real events among the Gospel writers. There are many more of such coincidences beyond those given in the talk.

@Edmund Bannister I don’t think that is the point here. The point is Rob Bell is preaching a false gospel of hope that everyone will be saved. That is not what the Bible says. It does say that every knee will bow and every tongue will confess Jesus is Lord,” (Philippians 2:10), but that doesn’t mean everyone will be saved. It says in Romans 10:9, “...because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”” And this does not mean we go on sinning so that the grace of God may go on abounding once we have confessed that Jesus is Lord (Romans 6 brother), but rather that our hearts would be changed with the Holy Spirit replacing our hearts of stone to hearts of flesh (Ezekiel 36:26) and we would no longer be slaves of sin, but slaves of righteouness (Romans 6:18).
When Your Calling Falls Through: A Theology of Place
Thanks, Tyler, for the honesty and clarity with which you write–and evaluate life’s little “didn’t work out the way we thought it would”s. There’s another side to the story too, when it did actually work out to leave, to head off to jungles on the far side of the world, literally so, in our case. And when, after 30 years of fulfilling ministry and seeing God work, of raising a family on the “mission field”, of living internationally, of doing something incredibly vital, that ministry comes to a right and timely conclusion. Then we find ourselves back in a little town in one of our home countries (my wife and I are from different countries), though still ministering in other ways back in Asia (lots of trips). It’s hard, even though we love it here–isn’t that stupid! We are trying to be content where planted (and where we made our choice), for right now we are “of this world” in a very real sense and part of Christ’s redemption for this world. Ha, yes, I am still trying to talk myself into it.
The cure for backsliding
The cure for a backslidden state is not “letting go and letting God,” nor is it found in our own recommitment to the Lord. The cure for our condition is the Lord Jesus himself. He is the Good Shepherd who restores the soul. He pursues and rescues the one who has left the fold. He holds the believer in his hand and will not lose his grip. He will finish the good work he has begun in us. Our great Savior does what his title implies: he saves. He saves us from our condemnation as well as from our wanderings.
Glorifying God in All You Do
Some of you, then, will say, “Well, this Christianity just isn’t working. I’m not healthy, wealthy, and wise. It’s not working. How am I supposed to glorify God? How am I supposed to praise God? How am I supposed to thank God for my cancer? My unattractive demeanor, my unemployment, my flat broke life? How am I supposed to be happy, praise God in all circumstances? Are you nuts? ‘Glorify God at all times.’ Broke. Unattractive. Single. Fired. Sick. Dying. Glorify God. Oh yeah, that’s great. That looks great on the bumper sticker. Try doing that. It doesn’t work.”

Can My Truth Be Different From Yours? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Recently, I was having a discussion with several individuals about our belief systems. Some of us had similar beliefs, while others held divergent worldviews. During the discussion one person stated, “Well, that may be true for you, but it isn’t for me.” He was asserting that my reality or truth was different than his.
Gospel Inclusion and Instagram
While the ethic during my day was never to reveal your plans and invitations, today a competitive feeding frenzy occurs on Instagram throughout the week as kids vie to portray their life as the most fun, included, social euphoria one ever could imagine. It is common teen behavior to show up for a party with your friends, take a picture of the crew at said party, post it on Instagram, and then leave within ten minutes. For those not immersed in teen culture, this trend sounds like an outlier. Trust me, it's the normal routine of the weekend for many, many kids.
The Elephant, The Whole Elephant, and Nothing But the Elephant, So Help Me… God? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Some recent conversations with a good friend of mine have reminded me of a story that she once used to illustrate her view of the human perception of truth. You might have heard it before-- it’s the story of the blind men and the elephant, and goes something like this: Some blind men approach an elephant and try to figure out what it is by touching and feeling various parts of it’s body. One man, feeling its trunk, concludes that it’s a snake. Another feeling one of its legs claims that it’s a tree trunk, and yet another feeling its tail claims it’s a rope-- and so the story goes, with each of the blind men coming to different conclusions of what the elephant is.
Why Is Man Unique? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Among most anti-theists, there is the notion that the appearance of man in history was merely a fluke of random mutation and natural selection, and that man is not actually that unique. He is just slightly further along the evolutionary expressway than the rest of the animal kingdom. Give the other animals time and they will catch up or even surpass man. In fact, if we roll back the process of evolution and try it again, the results would have been quite different. We can imagine other animals taking man’s place in the hierarchy of life.
Can a person be a committed Christian while ignoring apologetics? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Eve is busy programming away at her desk, rushing to check in her unit tests so she can spend her lunch hour reading the latest Stephenie Meyer novel, or check on the schedule for her local sports team, “the Vicariouses” (she has tickets for Thursday). Suddenly Eve hears Alice talking to Bob on the other side of her cubicle. She stops typing to listen to the following unencrypted conversation.
J.P. Moreland on Inadequate Approaches to Evangelism - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Today, we share the gospel as a means of addressing felt needs. We give testimonies of changed lives and say to people if they want to become better parents or overcome depression or loneliness, that Jesus is their answer. This approach to evangelism is inadequate for two reasons. First, it does not reach people who may be out of touch with their feelings. Second, it invites the response, “Sorry, I do not have a need.” Have you noticed how no one responded to Paul in this manner? In Acts 17-20, he based his preaching on the fact that the gospel is true and reasonable to believe. He reasoned and tried to persuade people to intelligently accept Jesus.
Recent Perspectives on the Reliability of the Gospels - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
The usual attempts to defend the historical reliability of the New Testament are often fairly general in nature. These arguments are typically based on the quantity, quality, and early date of the available New Testament manuscripts; the traditional authorship of the books; extra-biblical confirmation; and a few archaeological discoveries. This evidence for the trustworthiness of the New Testament is often contrasted with ancient classical Greek and Roman writings, which do not exhibit the same wealth of data.
Is There Life on Other Planets? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
This is an incredibly profound question for both the religious and non-religious alike. For the Christian, the knee-jerk reaction might be “no, of course not, God specially created the life on earth and did not do so elsewhere.” (By the way, I do not necessarily espouse this view.) For the secularist, the presence of life on other planets only adds weight to the idea that life arose here on earth by strictly naturalistic processes. So what does science have to say about this subject? Given the sensationalistic popular news articles, one might think the universe is teeming with alien life. However, the data actually say otherwise.
Isn’t the universe eternal? (Thus doing away with the need for a creator) - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
A universe with a finite past requires a beginning, which in turn requires a transcendent (or supernatural) cause. This is why our universe must be eternal for atheism to be valid. But Big Bang cosmology has shown that the universe is NOT eternal. In New Proofs for the Existence of God, Robert J. Spitzer (who was assisted by Dr. Stephen Barr of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Delaware) reveals that:
R.C. Sproul: There can be nothing in the heart that is not first in the mind - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
For the soul of a person to be inflamed with passion for the living God, that person's mind must first be informed about the character and will of God. There can be nothing in the heart that is not first in the mind. Though it is possible to have theology on the head without its piercing the soul, it cannot pierce the soul without first being grasped by the mind.
Will Everyone Be Saved? A Look at Universalism - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
In the spring of 2011, Pastor Rob Bell's book Love Wins hit the book stores, but the furor over the book started even before that. The charge was heresy. Bell appeared to be teaching Universalism, the belief that everyone will be saved in the end. In fact, Bell doesn't make a case for Universalism in the book, although his rejection of the traditional view of hell makes it seem so at first.
Max Planck: As a man who has devoted his whole life to science… - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
As a man who has devoted his whole life to the most clear headed science, to the study of matter, I can tell you as a result of my research about atoms this much: There is no matter as such. All matter originates and exists only by virtue of a force which brings the particle of an atom to vibration and holds this most minute solar system of the atom together. We must assume behind this force the existence of a conscious and intelligent mind. This mind is the matrix of all matter.
James 1:19-27 and the Apologist - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Having been involved in apologetics for some time, I understand the temptations that go with it. One of the biggest is to skip the listening part and dive right into the speaking part, often with plenty of anger. Sometimes we have a message or an argument that we just can’t wait to let loose with. We are not interested in what the other person has to say, what they believe, what their struggles are or the reasons for their skepticism. We want to unload a powerful argument that will demolish all their false beliefs…
Do Atheists Know God Exists? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
The Bible claims all men (atheists and skeptics included) have a knowledge of God. Romans 1:20-21 states, “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse. Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”
Ten Verses to Defend Your Faith - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
For the past few days I have been trying to think of the top ten verses that would be most helpful to apologists and evangelists. I have reflected on my own experience and also gotten feedback from many of you on Facebook and Twitter. So, here are my top ten verses to defend your faith (in no particular order):
A Biography Of Your Cubicle: How This Became The Modern Workplace
Take the rise of clerks in the mid-19th century. They were America's first office slaves, the original white-collar workers. They were also widely reviled: men perceived as low-moral dandies, who were merely clever with numbers (compared with the real American men who worked with their hands). Edgar Allan Poe mocked them in fiction. Ralph Waldo Emerson as much as called them a class of whiners. In fact, Saval found one clerk who responded to the slander by exercising in the off hours to build up his chest — which, Saval points out, may have fostered our modern idea of the gym.
God's Not Dead: Atheistic Evolution Rests Upon Irrationalism and Blind Faith
The biggest problem for the evolutionary theory:
It is a theory. A theory is not a material object by definition. It is abstract
and immaterial. The material-only evolutionist posits the idea, only the
physical exists, while he is asserting an idea that is not physical. Ideas, theories,
and hypotheses are not physical objects. They are immaterial. The evolutionist
uses an immaterial theory to assert that it is only possible for the material
cosmos to exist. One can discern, with just a superficial examination of the
materialist’s claims, that their theory is self-nullifying: it commits
philosophical suicide. We should place this reality before them and drive them
to the truth that their theories are absurd. We must defend the truth in Christ
to the extent that all men bow to His Lordship or remain silent. The goal is
for their knee to bow and their tongue to confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. If
not, let their tongues hang silent.
Stephen J. Bedard: They say that religion leads to evil… - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
They say that religion leads to evil. Maybe they are right. But so do marriages and having children. I am convinced that if people stopped having children, within a few generations moral evil would be abolished from this planet.
Suicide Is Now Killing More Army Reservists Than Active Duty Soldiers
The military suicide rate has dropped among active duty service members, but the deaths of Army National Guard and Reserve soldiers increased, new figures from the Defense Department reveal. Reservist suicides increased from 140 in 2012 to 152 in 2013, slightly higher than the number of active duty suicides, at 151. Because many m
Reading The Bible Well - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
As Christians, we rely on the Holy Spirit and the Bible to reveal God to us. If anything hinders our ability to fully understand what God wants us to learn from Scripture, that can be a problem. The more we understand the Bible, the more securely we can know, understand and present God’s truth. In order to read the Bible well, we need to understand genre, purpose, and context.
Mike Licona and Bart Ehrman debate the resurrection of Jesus
Bart Ehrman is well known as a US New Testament Scholar who lost his Christian faith and now questions many core precepts of Christianity, including the Resurrection of Jesus. When Mike Licona had doubts he devoted himself to investigating the evidence and became convinced that Jesus resurrection is the only rational explanation for the facts.
Book Review- Can Man Live Without God? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Chapter 1: Anguish in Affluence Zacharias begins the book by setting a foundation for the reason behind the book and his philosophical method. He shows how a person's view of God influences that person's entire life- from what they believe about everything else to how they act. If they get their understanding of God incorrect, then their beliefs and actions will be antithetical to reality. He also shows that he believes philosophy takes place on three levels: through logic- and reason- based arm-chair theory, through the emotional artistic productions, and through everyday, practical, "dinner table" application. He appeals to each by using the first for raw argumentation, the second for illustration and examples, and the third for relevance to our lives. His goal is to appeal to all three levels throughout the book, so that the reader may be able to understand his argument at all the levels and be able to communicate it likewise to others at all three levels.
How to Answer 'Why Would God Allow Evil?' - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Mittelberg told The Christian Post recently that in fact, it was the issue of evil that initially led the renowned author and scholar C. S. Lewis into atheism. However, upon further reflection, Lewis began to see that if there is no God, then there is no such thing as evil either.
If God is Omnipotent (All Powerful) Why Did He Need to Take Six Days to Create the Universe? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
If God can do anything (if He is truly omnipotent), why did He take six days to create the universe, when He could have done it instantly? Astronomical data indicates that the universe began 13.7 billion years ago, 1 but the earth was not formed until 4.5 billion years ago. 2 Why would God wait 9.2 billion years after creating the universe to create the earth? And why would He wait another 4.5 billion years to create humans, if we are really God's ultimate reason for creating the universe? Are the atheists correct in asserting that the whole thing was an unplanned accident? The Bible actually addresses many of these issues and provides answers that tell us why God created the universe the way He did.
Renewing Your Mind with R.C. Sproul | Daily Christian Teaching
A second major point that must be made is this: If all truth has its source in God and if all truth is unified, then one thing we know to be certain is that if there is a contradiction between an interpretation of Scripture and an interpretation of what God has created, then one or both of those interpretations is incorrect. They cannot both be correct. Christians must recognize that the conflict may be due to a misinterpretation of creation, to a misinterpretation of Scripture, or to a misinterpretation of both. This means we need to do a thorough and careful examination of both the scientific theory and the biblical exegesis to discover the source of the conflict. We must make sure we are dealing with the actual teaching of Scripture as opposed to a mistaken interpretation of Scripture. And we must examine the evidence for the scientific theory in question to discover whether we are dealing with something that is true about God's creation or something that is merely speculation. All of this hard work takes time, and it means that we do not jump to hasty conclusions.

Truth Matters - Confident Faith in a Confusing World - Apologetics Guy
I am really looking forward to reading this book. I was on the fence about whether or not I would pick up a copy, but reading your review has definitely pushed me over the fence. ;) When I was a high school senior, I read a book called How to Stay a Christian in College by J. Budziszewski, and it was great at giving me some pointers about my walk with God. However, after my first year in college, I realized that some of my friends had fallen away from the faith because of some of the arguments that are refuted in Truth Matters. I wish this resource had been available when I was a teen because of the amazing truth it presents and the exposure it gives its reader to some of the bigger arguments against our faith.
Crooked Beauty - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
When I first looked at him I tilted my head a bit, thinking he was tilting his head too. He wasn’t. His face is crooked. You would think this should count against him, but it doesn’t. He’s not perfect, but somehow that actually adds to my opinion of him. (How many of you thought, “Ahhhhh!”)
How to Worship When You Don’t Feel Like It
God's love is the same no matter how we feel, and our response to Him doesn't depend on our emotional engagement. God is love, God is good—and those are permanent truths. Proclaiming those things can help us to worship when we don't feel like it, and bring us back to a place of thanksgiving and wonder at the vast love God has for us.
Wanted: A Point of Reference - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
When you are sitting at a stop light in your car and see motion out of the corner of your eye, there are two responses. The first is to push harder on the brake pedal and the second is to look at a lamp post, building or some other stationary object to see if your car moving.
God, the Gospel, and the Gay Challenge -- A Response to Matthew Vines
Gender complementarity is the belief that the Bible’s teachings on gender and gender roles is to be understood in terms of the fact that men and women are equally made in God’s image (status) but different in terms of assignment (roles). This has been the belief and conviction of virtually all Christians throughout the centuries, and it is the view held by the vast majority of those identified as Christians in the world even today. But a denial of this conviction, hand in hand with the argument that sameness of role is necessary to affirm equality of status, has led some to argue that difference in gender roles must be rejected. The first impediment to making this argument is the fact that the Bible insists on a difference in roles. In order to overcome this impediment, biblical scholars and theologians committed to egalitarianism have made arguments that are hauntingly similar to those now made by Matthew Vines in favor of relativizing the Bible’s texts on same-sex behaviors.
The Tide is Turning, Pro-Life Movement is Now Winning - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Every year for the past 38 we have been commemorating the sad day of January 22, 1973, when the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion in the United States. That decision was the culmination of years of lobbying by liberal feminists and pro-choice radicals, and the outcome of secular thinking of the 1960s.
Jars of Clay Lead Singer Announces Support for Gay Marriage
“I’m trying to make sense of the conservative argument. But it doesn’t hold up to basic scrutiny. Feels akin to women’s suffrage. I just don’t see a negative effect to allowing gay marriage. No societal breakdown, no war on traditional marriage. Anyone?”
