Melissa Cain Travis: public schools and the Christian worldview
A secularized education communicates the falsehood that truths about the world are entirely separable from–and have meaning apart from–God and the Christian worldview. Attempts to “neutralize” education in order to accommodate a pluralistic society result in distortions that slant everything away from the truth about God, the nature of man, and objective morality. The “big questions” may not be directly addressed in the classroom, but this avoidance automatically yet subtly communicates the philosophy of relativism–that there are many “right” answers to those questions, so the school room is not the place to teach one particular view.
Jars of Clay Front-Man Dan Haseltine Twitter Rants Support for Gay Marriage, Dismisses Bible References: 'I Don't Think Scripture 'Clearly' States Anything Regarding Morality'
Even though Haseltime had suggested Bible verses on the topic of marriage were not "helpful" to him in settling his questions, Christians fans and writers have continued to indicate they believe precisely the opposite was needed, and that the Bible was the perfect place to look for God's guidance on the matter. Christiannews.net pointed to various Bible verses, "According to the Scriptures in Matthew 19:4-5, Jesus defined marriage in referring back to Genesis 2:24, '...Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh?'"
Amazing Adaptation of 'Hallelujah' Reveals Glory of Jesus Christ
Even in the darkest moments of despair in His tragic story we are given cause to shout hallelujah and open our hearts wide because it is a story of love and redemption, the great love of Jesus Christ.
The practical orientation of the book should be highlighted. Bray has written this book for pastors and missionaries and Christians who want to know and love God. His work is filled with wise and orthodox theology, but what is striking is how he lingers over truths and applies them to the hearts of his readers. This feature of the book struck me from the outset. Bray says, “Our faith in God is not just a philosophical belief in a supreme being; it is a life-changing experience of the one who has made us what we are” (p. 19). He says about evangelism, “[W]e have a duty to tell them [non-Christians] what has happened to us can and ought to happen to them too. The treasure we have received is not for hoarding but for sharing, and it is our duty to go out and find those whom God has called to be his sheep” (p. 19). “No one who receives the gospel can keep it to himself; he will immediately seek to communicate it to others and join in fellowship with those who share his convictions” (p. 517). A church that “ceases to preach the gospel . . . will wither and die” (p.
Beyond Mere Christianity - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
C. S. Lewis was one of the most influential Christian apologists of the twentieth century, and he remains influential today. His apologetic works explain essential Christian teachings in ordinary, nontechnical language, and his writings usually focus on beliefs that all Christians hold in common— what he called “mere Christianity.” He thought this approach would best serve those who did not know Jesus Christ. Once they came to faith, Lewis believed, they would learn about theological differences between churches and join a Christian fellowship of their choosing.

Marrying a non-Christian: does the Bible allow it?
I think that the best way to answer the question, “should I marry a non-Christian?”, is to ask whether it makes any difference if your spouse is on board with your plans for your ministry and with your marriage. So let’s take a look at a case where someone famous who chose a Christian wife, and we’ll see how much that decision affected his ministry and his marriage.
Evangelical Climate Scientist Among TIME Magazine’s ‘Most Influential People’
Along with a plethora of pop stars, activists, writers, celebrities and politicians, Dr. Katharine Hayhoe, the scientific adviser to the Evangelical Environmental Network and director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University, was named to TIME magazine’s list of the world’s 100 most influential people. Dr. Hayhoe is the co-author of the book A Climate for Change: Global Warming Facts for Faith-Based Decisions and describes herself as “a spokesperson with one principal goal—to bring public awareness to the simple truth that the scientific debate is over, and now it's time for all of us to take action.” In the TIME profile , “An environmental evangelist”, actor Don Cheadle wrote, “There’s something fascinating about a smart person who defies stereotype. That’s what makes my friend Katharine Hayhoe—a Texas Tech climatologist and an evangelical Christian—so interesting” ...
China on course to become 'world's most Christian nation' within 15 years - Telegraph
Such fears may not be entirely unwarranted. Christians' growing power was on
show earlier this month when thousands flocked to defend a church in
Wenzhou, a city known as the "Jerusalem of the East", after
government threats to demolish it. Faced with the congregation's very public
show of resistance, officials appear to have backed away from their plans, negotiating
a compromise with church leaders .

Hijacking Back Your Brain from Porn
Last week I wrote about the physiological dimension of addiction to pornography . New brain research suggests it is as strong as addiction to cocaine and heroin because of its unique combination of stimulant and opiate. Pornography lays down real physiological paths in the brain. All sexual experience tends to migrate to these paths.
Sympathy For The Devil
Such a notion isn’t found in the Bible, of course. This, among the multitude of Aronofsky’s other imaginative details like giant Lava Monsters, has caused many a reviewer’s head to be scratched. Conservative-minded evangelicals write off the film because of the “liberties” taken with the text of Genesis, while a more liberal-minded group stands in favor of cutting the director some slack. After all, we shouldn’t expect a professed atheist to have the same ideas of “respecting” sacred texts the way a Bible-believer would.
Grace to You
The resistance of evil and wrong, if done properly, will occur within the church. Jesus’ instruction on church discipline concludes with this command: “If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector” (Matt. 18:17; cf. 1 Tim. 5:20). A sinning member who rejects one-on-one reproof as well as reproof from two or three others and from the entire church must be excluded from the fellowship. Concerning unrepentant immorality in the church, Paul instructed—quoting the Old Testament—“Remove the wicked man from among yourselves” (1 Cor. 5:13).

William Lane Craig: Our Churches have dropped the ball… - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
I am a pastor in the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod. One time I asked a congregation of approx. 150 people a few questions. First, I asked how many had been trained in Christian apologetics. A few people raised their hands. Then I asked how many had been trained in liberal theology. If I remember right, no one raised his/her hand. Then I asked how many watch television including the History channel, Discovery Channel, Science channels, Smithsonian channel, etc. Almost everyone raised their hand. Then I stated, "You have all been trained in liberal theology!" It is true. A person does not need to go to seminary to hear this stuff because all the people who are doing the programs on television are only allowed if they come from the position of "naturalism," "uniformitarianism," and an atheistic "scientism." Thus, although the evidence they produce often points to young earth catastrophism, and the scientists cannot even explain by science how a cell can spontaneously generate and survive more than a second, it is always, without exception, used to support ideas of an old earth and evolution.
84 Confirmed Facts in the Last 16 Chapters of the Book of Acts - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.
Theology and science
This approach raises two protests. First, it will eventually fail. It is a deep weakness for any theology or ideology to be wrong about the scientific nature of the universe. The children of believers are presented with a cruel and false choice: In order to accept the scientific method, they must abandon the beliefs of their community. And many will naturally choose science. If theological conservatives define themselves by their skepticism about the (marvelous, breathtaking, compelling) findings of modern science, they will eventually lose — not only in public debates but in the minds of their own children.

7. Archaeology confirms the proper location of Bethesda [5:2]. [Excavations between 1914 and 1938 uncovered that pool and found it to be just as John described it. Since that structure did not exist after the Romans destroyed the city in A.D. 70, it's unlikely any later non-eyewitness could have described it in such vivid detail. Moreover, John says that this structure "is in Jerusalem," implying that he's writing before 70].

God has trademarked manhood
Man was called to subdue. And he was called to care. But he was also called to rule. In ruling they would serve as God’s vice-regents (a person who acts in the name of another) on Earth. This rule was not to be done with an iron fist. If humans were really going to reflect the image of God’s rule on their own, they would accept the responsibility of seeing to the welfare of that which is put under them and the privilege of using it for their benefit.
Alumni Academy Winter
The class will be a study of how churches can best equip families to disciple their children. This class is for pastors and leaders who are in the trenches of ministry and those who may see parent’s disengaging from their children’s spiritual development, see too many students leave for college and drop out of church or are frustrated with programmed ministries that fail to produce results. Based on Dr. Jones’s solid research and years of experience, this course unpacks how real-life churches can narrow the gap between present reality and the biblical ideal of faith-nurturing families. This class will explore various questions related to closing this gap in family ministry. What should motivate us to change our ministry practices? What does the biblical and theological framework for these changes look like? Why is it that parents aren’t actively engaged in their children’s spiritual development? What you learn from these characteristics and patterns will provide you with the tools that you will need to guide your ministry toward equipping the families in your congregation. At this Alumni Academy Dr.
Why Don’t Atheists Want There to Be a God? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
A common theme we have revisited on this blog is that the decision to believe in God or not believe in God is more than an intellectual exercise – there are always psychological and emotional factors at play as well. This is contrary to the received wisdom of many atheists who argue that belief in God is about wish fulfillment and emotional neediness, and that atheism is arrived at primarily through rational analysis. I have challenged this received wisdom many times on the blog, but sometimes it is helpful to review.
Now, at this present hour, necessity itself exhorts you more than ever to turn your whole mind heavenward. As yet, we know not what will be the event. But since it appears as though God would use your blood to sign His truth, there is nothing better than for you to prepare yourselves to that end, beseeching Him so to subdue you to His good pleasure, that nothing may hinder you from following whithersoever he shall call. . . . You know, however, in what strength you have to fight—a strength on which all those who trust, shall never be daunted, much less confounded. Even so, my brothers, be confident that you shall be strengthened, according to your need, by the Spirit of our Lord Jesus, so that you shall not faint under the load of temptations, however heavy it be, any more than he did who won so glorious a victory, that in the midst of our miseries it is an unfailing pledge of our triumph. Since it pleases Him to employ you to the death in maintaining His quarrel, He will strengthen your hands in the fight, and will not suffer a single drop of your blood to be spent in vain. And though the fruit may not all at once appear, yet in time it shall spring up more abundantly than we can express.
Who Are You To Impose Your Morality on Others? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
This who-are-you-to-say-another-culture’s-wrong philosophy goes back centuries — perhaps most notably to philosopher Johann Gottfried von Herder (1744–1803). He despised the cold rationalism of the Enlightenment, and emphasized the individuality of persons and their cultures.2 According to von Herder humans do not have a fixed nature; their environment and family experiences influence them, and we can predict their actions and responses based on those influences.
Testing Assertions Like Serpents and Doves - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Over the years of engaging in “religious dialogue,” I’ve noticed something that people do often. They apply rules of verification to the beliefs of others, yet their own beliefs they take as “matter of fact,” often with no data to support them. Or they make claims that cannot pass their own test of truth (or are self-refuting). Either of these are easy to do, and I’m certain we are all guilty of some form of one or the other on occasion. So I believe it is important that we be able to recognize these errors in the claims of others, and, equally important, in our own claims. This isn’t easy because you have to separate yourself from the content of the discussion and question methods of gaining the knowledge, as well as apply tests of “internal consistency.”
Why the Hypothesis that God Raised Jesus from the Dead is the Best Explanation - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Apologists are very much magician-like in their approach to defending the faith, or so it seems. In the same way that a magician gets you to focus on that which he wants you to focus upon, the apologist employs the same tactic. These three bedrock "facts" are a good example. Without spending any time on refuting these "facts" there are still those "facts" which when focused upon produce a historical argument for suggesting that the resurrection did not happen as promoted by the Christian apologists. I think it important to remember this point. All of the "facts" do not align themselves with conventional wisdom as preached by these Christian apologists. The selective nature of their "facts" suggests a certain propaganda approach to the "truth". Just a thought. Thanks.
A Defense of the Historicity of Jesus' Divine Self-Understanding - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
A key part of the investigation into the reliability of the New Testament (and the transformative message which it conveys) lies in establishing what Jesus considered Himself to be, and the mission that he thought it was his role to fulfill. While a discernment of Jesus’ self-understanding is only a necessary (but non-sufficient) condition in establishing the truth of the Bible, it can nonetheless fit into a robust consilience of evidence which best makes sense only in light of the truth of the Christian message. If it can be determined historically — with a reasonable degree of confidence — that Jesus really did believe Himself to be the eternal and divine Son of God, the Saviour of all mankind, we can investigate the three candidate hypotheses offered by C.S. Lewis’ famous Trilemma : Was Jesus a Liar, a Lunatic or Lord? Once we have established what Jesus claimed about Himself, we can turn our investigation to which of these three candidate hypotheses best explains the available evidence.
Ben Witherington: The Resurrection in the Realm of Historical Reality - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Any position in which claims about Jesus or the resurrection are removed from the realm of historical reality and placed in a subjective realm of personal belief or some realm that is immune to human scrutiny does Jesus and the resurrection no service and no justice. It is a ploy of desperation to suggest that the Christian faith would be little affected if Jesus was not actually raised from the dead in space and time.
In Defense of a Little Philosophy - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Christians have, in recent years, been wary of philosophy. “Recently” has been for a gaggle of centuries now, for mistrusting philosophy and philosophers has a long tradition in Christian circles. Much of this is justified, for significant levels of bad thinking and false doctrine has been introduced by philosophers in the guise of theology and new thinking. We are also taught in scripture to beware of philosophy, and to beware of those who creep into the church with false teachings. Colossians 2:8 tells us “Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy and empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, and not according to Christ.”
When it comes to accepting evolution, gut feelings trump facts - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
In an analysis of the beliefs of biology teachers, researchers found that a quick intuitive notion of how right an idea feels was a powerful driver of whether or not students accepted evolution -- often trumping factors such as knowledge level or religion.

The Sum of the Matter: Douglas Groothuis on Christian Apologetics - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Here is the sum of the matter. We must earnestly endeavor to know the truth of the biblical worldview and to make it known with integrity to as many people as possible with the best arguments available. To know God in Christ means that we desire to make Christian truth available to others in the most compelling form possible. To be created in God’s rational, moral and relational image means that our entire being should be aimed at the glorification of God in Christian witness. A significant part of that witness is Christian apologetics.
Jaroslav Pelikan — The Need for Creeds
Though creeds, as Pelikan states, are beneficial for universality of the faith, I personally do not think that having one creed that crosses all time and cultural boundaries has much merit. I think this way because, seeing as a creed is presented in response to clarifying what proper belief looks like, each set of times and cultures may need clarifying in different ways. Also on the same topic, creeds would need to be translated into different languages and, as we have seen in bible translations, some languages may not define the word quite as it was originally understood in the original language. On the other hand, Christianity is the only world religion that has many creeds, so maybe the making of new creeds is not the answer. Although a unified creed for all time and all of the worldwide church would be nice, there are already many creeds and some may not represent the Christian faith as well as others. A creed must be in response to an issue or argument that is against what the church believes to be true, so in order to draw the line in the sand there must be a creed must be in place.
G.K. Chesterton: the Materialist Explanation - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

No one believed that Jesus was God prior to Nicaea - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Sure, Jesus was a real historical figure. He was a homeless teacher who was a generally good man. His early followers really, really wanted for him to be the Messiah. They attempted to impose this on him but he rejected it. Their desire was so great however, that over time the church itself began teaching Jesus’ divinity. This ultimately culminated in Constantine gathering all church leaders together in 325AD to vote on the matter. After this historic session, Jesus’ deity was firmly established, and taught as Christian truth by royal edict from that point on.
When Were The Gospels Written? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
When were the gospel biographical accounts of Jesus written? One popular claim by skeptics is that the gospels were written so long after the events which they narrate that their historical and biographical value is suspect. While virtually all scholars maintain that all of the gospels were written in the first century, within liberal scholarship it is conventionally thought that all four gospels were written post-70AD. It is my own view, however, that this proposition is largely arbitrary, and based largely on a false presumption that a prediction, on the part of Jesus regarding the destruction of the temple in AD70, must have been composed after-the-fact. If, however, one takes seriously the proposition that prophecy by a divine figure is possible, then the justification for the post-70AD dating largely disappears.
Does Isaiah 53 Speak About Jesus? A Response To Critics - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
I have always viewed the exquisitely detailed Messianic prophecy of Isaiah 53 as one of the most powerful and compelling reasons for thinking that Christianity is indeed true. Written some 700 years before Christ’s life on earth, this prophecy details the suffering and redemptive purposes of the Messiah. Moreover, the presence of the entire book of Isaiah in the Qumran scrolls gives us confidence that this prophecy pre-dates the first century by at least a couple hundred years. Its presence among the Jewish Scriptures precludes any possibility of Christian tampering anyway, and such a possibility is uniformly rejected among contemporary scholarship.

Why is Jesus Christ the Only Way of Salvation? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network
Jesus Christ proclaimed, “I am the Way, and the truth, and the Life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me” (John 14:6). The Apostles echoed this claim, stating, “And there is salvation in no one else; there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved” (Acts 4:12). This doctrine is known as “Christian Particularism.”
