Male or female? First sex-determining genes appeared in mammals some 180 million years ago

The Y chromosome, which distinguishes males from females at the genetic level, appeared some 180 million years ago. It originated twice independently in all mammals. Scientists have managed to date these events that are crucial for both mammalian evolution and our lives, because the Y chromosome determines whether we are born as a boy or girl.

Stop Trying to Tame God: Rediscovering Dangerous Christianity - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

I worried we were losing sight of God’s holiness. Listening to the language we use in Evangelical circles is what tipped me off. We love talking about God’s love, but we don’t talk much about his holiness. Most of our worship choruses could be sung to God—or a girlfriend. Sermons drip with assurances of God’s affection but rarely seem to mention his holiness, let alone his wrath. We relate to God, it seems, almost entirely on therapeutic terms. Since many people find God’s majesty and holiness disconcerting, we gloss over those attributes and focus exclusively on love. Don’t get me wrong—we need to be reminded of God’s love. But something is missing. That’s why I wrote this book.

An imaginative apologetic: Jesus or Nothing

DD: Probably the best way to answer that is to unpack the title. Some people have been excited about the book because they think it’s kind of like “Jesus or bust,” you know, “It’s all or nothing,” and I can see where they would get that. But really “nothing” represents a worldview that sees the universe as pointing to itself, containing its own answers — Carl Sagan’s “the cosmos is all there is or was or ever will be.” And so the “nothing” is just a universe that has no transcendent meaning, no objective purpose or intrinsic worth. Either there’s a transcendent God who has revealed himself or we live in a universe that ultimately doesn’t care. So that’s the title, Jesus or Nothing : it’s Jesus or an atheistic worldview.

What Happens When Dr. Hugh Ross Visits Your Church - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

We've just hosted Astronomer and Astrophysicist, Dr Hugh Ross, for a five day Easter campaign. Before he arrived, after we announced he was coming to Launceston, we became aware of the campaign of opposition to his visit. I only looked at a fraction of the emails which were put in circulation among my colleagues calling for a boycott of his visit. In these emails, and printed materials, Dr Ross was accused of being " a charlatan ", " a tool of Satan ", " an atheist pretending to be a Christian ", " divisive ", " heretical ", who " distorted the Bible ", promoted " secular " science over the Bible, and did not take the Bible " literally ". In the week he actually arrived in Launceston, one 'ministry' website declared that Dr Ross was " racist " because " he teaches that Australian aboriginals are not human! "

The sad power of an atheist’s temper tantrum

The response has to be two-fold. First, confront FFRF and its angry atheist allies in court, fighting their cases not just on the merits but also contesting the very idea that mere personal offense can be sufficient grounds for filing suit. There is reason to believe the Supreme Court of the United States – when it considers the issue – will do away with “offended observer” standing, and if it does it will restore constitutional sanity to First Amendment doctrine.

Grace to You

Because God has the ultimate criterion of complete truthfulness, even our most routine conversations should be truthful and dependable in every detail. Our everyday talk ought to be plain and straightforward, uncluttered by qualifiers, exaggerations, or hedges on the truth. Our word must be as good as our bond or as any vow or oath we ever make. James’s admonishment agrees with Jesus’ teaching, “But above all, my brethren, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but your yes is to be yes, and your no, no, so that you may not fall under judgment” (James 5:12).

How I Almost Became a False Teacher

When you are saturated in the Bible, that subtle, non-biblical voice someone like me may inadvertently bring into your church will be felt. When felt, you can move up next to it, seek to understand it, and respond to it in loving ways, with wisdom that God will provide. Your God-centered leadership can guide such a false-teacher-in-training away from that which would kill him and others. Maybe you’ll have to endure some harsh and unkind words in response. Or maybe God will use your firm, gentle, courageous engagement to turn a false teacher into a passionate lover of God and his word.

D3 Youth Ministry Blog

Maybe, but not always. A desire should not be misunderstood as a calling. It may simply be a feeling. This feeling may be from God, or it may be an impulse of your own heart. What is clear is what is revealed in God’s Word.  Before looking at your specific calling, let’s look at God’s calling for women in general. According to God’s Word, God’s highest calling for most women is being a wife and mom (Genesis 2:18; Titus 2:4). As a wife, I am designed to help my husband be the best man he can be as he lives out his calling to make disciples. So this means that if I am married, I can be confident that I am following God’s calling when I support my husband in his calling. If you are called to singleness, you are still created to be a helper in a general sense to the body of Christ, but you are also able to maximize your giftedness in a unique, devoted way (1 Cor. 7:32-35). So if you are single, I would encourage you to find a ministry that you love with leaders that you can work under and help. Then devote yourself to helping them be the best they can be as they further the kingdom.

Your work matters to God

This doctrine teaches that all things come under the lordship of Christ, including the work of our vocations. Our work matters to God. As human beings created in the image of God, we work and create as a reflection of that image. The work of our hands is intended to serve three great ends:

Ravi Zacharias on the Value of Thought - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The Bible places supreme value in the thought life. “As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he,” Solomon wrote. Jesus asserted that sin’s gravity lay in the idea itself, not just the act. Paul admonished the church at Philippi to have the mind of Christ, and to the same people he wrote, “Whatever is true ... pure … if there be any virtue … think on these things.” Thus, the follower of Christ must demonstrate to the world what it is not just to think, but to think justly.

WORLD | Salt and light on campus | May 3, 2014

In such an environment, a Christian college that proclaims it will just throw out to students a variety of theories and let them decide, is abandoning the battle for the Bible. The playing field is not level, and the tendency of most teens to seek popularity and security will incline many to accept evolution. If Christian colleges at least hope to balance out cultural pressure, they need professors who will confidently and enthusiastically put before students the ample biblical and scientific evidence for Intelligent Design.   —Marvin Olasky

Who or What Caused God? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Recently, I was watching a debate on television between an atheist and a believer. The Christian had presented several arguments to support the idea that the physical universe of space, time and matter had not existed forever, but rather came into existence a finite period of time ago. He went on to argue that the best explanation for this fact is that there is a First Cause — God — who caused the universe to come into being.

If God, Why Suffering? Thoughts on Theodicy - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

How Sound is This Argument? In terms of its logical structure, provided the first six premises are true, the argument seems at first brush fairly robust. The key premise, I think — indeed, the main premise which I contest — is Premise 5: If a being existed with knowledge of all of the evil and suffering in the world, and both the ability and will to prevent it, such a being would do so. This Premise is only valid if one assumes that God cannot have morally good reasons for tolerating the presence of evil and suffering in the world. Further problems abound when we consider Premise 6, where we are compelled to ask, “What is the reference point for pronouncing a proposition as ‘evil’ or ‘unjust’?” As we shall see in the course of this blog post, Premise 6 is difficult to justify within the conceptual framework of the materialist worldview…

No Wonder Americans Don’t Know Life Begins at Conception, They Don’t Know Basic Science

This has huge implications for pro-life education. “Life begins at conception” is meaningless if people don’t accept that a “genetic code that helps determine who we are” is also present at conception. Without DNA, all you have is generic life, a clump of cells that might become an individual some day. DNA is what stays constant throughout our lives, from fertilization, giving us unique identities.

Science and Miracles - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

First of all, what’s a miracle? Miracles are signs of God’s particular grace to his people in particular circumstances. They are events that happen in response to prayer or a desire to connect with God. Their mechanism or timing defies normal scientific reasoning, and show us something special about God’s character. I think this is a Biblical definition of a miracle – a sign; a wonder; something that shows us how amazing God is and how much he loves us. And a miracle doesn’t HAVE to defy scientific explanation – some miracles are ‘ordinary’ events with incredible timing.

Cortney O'Brien - Sick: British Model Getting An Abortion to Become More Famous

How tragic that Cunningham views a child as "ruining her life" or "getting in her way" of appearing on an inconsequential reality show. God, the Gospel, and the Gay Challenge — A Response to Matthew Vines

Gender complementarity is the belief that the Bible’s teachings on gender and gender roles is to be understood in terms of the fact that men and women are equally made in God’s image (status) but different in terms of assignment (roles). This has been the belief and conviction of virtually all Christians throughout the centuries, and it is the view held by the vast majority of those identified as Christians in the world even today. But a denial of this conviction, hand in hand with the argument that sameness of role is necessary to affirm equality of status, has led some to argue that difference in gender roles must be rejected. The first impediment to making this argument is the fact that the Bible insists on a difference in roles. In order to overcome this impediment, biblical scholars and theologians committed to egalitarianism have made arguments that are hauntingly similar to those now made by Matthew Vines in favor of relativizing the Bible’s texts on same-sex behaviors.

Phillip E. Johnson: Reassuring lies and uncomfortable truths - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

We all like to believe we are more rational than we really are. The painful truth is that we are naturally inclined to believe what we want to believe, and we may adopt some fashionable intellectual scheme because it allows us to feel superior to other people, especially those unenlightened masses who need the crutch or the discipline of religion. Of course people may also adopt a religious creed in order to justify themselves, especially in times or places where religion is fashionable. Everybody is subject to the temptation to rationalize. The temptation is probably greatest for those with the most intelligence because the more intelligent we are, the easier we will find it to invent convenient rationalizations for what we want to believe and to decorate them with high-sounding claptrap. Unless we take the greatest precautions, we will use our reasoning powers to convince ourselves to believe reassuring lies rather than the uncomfortable truths that reality may be trying to tell us.

Can Science Sometimes Be Wrong? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Science is “Self-Correcting” There was a kind older gentleman manning a table with some molds of “ancient human” skulls. They were each distinct in their shape, size and features. With each skull was a 3×5 card that noted the “type” of human the skull belonged to, and on the back of the card was listed the date range in which that specific creature “walked” the Earth. The interesting thing about these date ranges is that they had been repeatedly scratched out and changed (changed, mind you, not refined–to refine would be to reduce the window in range, or perhaps slight adjustments to the window. However, the window moved, in some cases substantially, it did not just get smaller.) More on that in a moment.

In The Beginning, God… The Kalaam and Thomistic approaches to the Cosmological argument - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The third way goes into Necessary Being. This beautifully illustrates that God is the necessary being, and that his existence is based in the necessity of His own nature. First, Thomas tells us about contingent/possible things then, he tells us about necessary things, which are absolutely essential and couldn’t be anything else but what they are. From that I gather, Thomas is basically saying that there are things that are possible in this universe and things that aren’t, because of that, if everything were just possible things, than at one point nothing existed and from that nothing ever would. Therefore, we gather that something must exist necessarily. Aquinas claims, that necessary things owe their necessity to others or to themselves, because an infinite regress of necessary things owing there existence to others would be impossible. Basically, there must be a necessary thing whose necessity is itself; this necessary thing causes necessity in others. Again here is just a basic summary of the argument; I would suggest more study for a detailed understanding of all the five ways.

The Weapons of Spiritual Warfare - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

We’ve looked at how living our lives in service to God is like being engaged in a counterinsurgency operation similar to our nations current fights in Iraq and Afghanistan. But like any combatant on the battle field, we must know what weapons we have and how to use them. What good is it to have a tank when the only weapon we know how to use is a BB gun? So let’s take a moment to inventory our supply of divine instruments, by which our “Commander,” through us, inflicts damage on our enemy.

Take Away Hell and It's All Good, Right? - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

"A good and loving god wouldn't send anyone to Hell." This is a common objection raised by opponents of Christianity and even some Christians. The implication is that the Christian God, if He exists, isn't good and loving since He sends some people to Hell. Therefore, even if He exists, He isn't worthy of worship. So, the general objection is: God does X, and X is not good and loving; therefore, God is not good and loving." Remember this formula, because I want to look at it again in a moment.

Megachurch Pastor and Bestselling Author John Ortberg on Why Your Soul Is 'Kind of Like a Car'

Ortberg:  I think in our day the word "soul" is used less and less often, partly because it's thought to be not scientific. What happens is, it's a lot like your car. If you want to care for your car, you kind of have to know what the parts do, what the carburetor does, what the fan belt does — somebody's gotta know that if they want to care for it. It's much the same with the soul. It's really interesting when I speak with people, just to say the sentence, "You have a soul" makes people get real quiet. Because at some deep level, we all recognize this. The beginning place really is just for people to acknowledge that they have a soul and that it needs to be cared for.

It’s not easy being green: Christian conscience and Earth Day

Here we are again. It’s Earth Day and, if you’re anything like me, I suspect you wrestle with how to make some sense of the day. Chances are we’re not about to go out on a Greenpeace expedition or going to retrofit our cars to run off used cooking oil. But does the gospel have anything to say to how Christians think about the environment? We see twin pitfalls. On the one hand, we must reject any worldview that idolizes the creation and fails to worship the Creator. On the other hand, we must reject a miniaturized Christianity that implies that King Jesus makes no demand on how we steward his creation.

Survey: Christian mothers value family over their relationship with Jesus

If your children are raised to think that Christianity is an arbitrary set of rules that cannot be debated or questioned, all in the name of family happiness and respectability, then as soon as they get to university, they will rebel. So the first priority can never be “family” - the first priority has to be truth. Christianity is not a tool to achieve happiness in the home, or respectability with the neighbors. Having family as a priority can cause questions and doubts about Christian truth claims to be swept under the rug. That works for a while, but as soon as the kids hit university, they will drop their Christian faith like a hot potato. A better idea is to focus more on truth and open discussion, and let all the doubts and questions and discomfort about being different come out in the open while the kids are growing up.

Unnaturalness of Atheism - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

The idea that atheism ought be assumed by default is a chimera. Atheism cannot be assumed by default, it must be demonstrated. The belief that given the failure of theistic case for God, atheism ought be assumed does not only commit an appeal to ignorance but is also against the picture painted by modern discoveries in Cognitive Science of Religion (CSR).

10 Pitfalls of the Foolish Apologist - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

A Christian ambassador desires to be tactful, persuasive, sensitive, and thoughtful. Being a good apologist and being able to give good reasons for the truth of the Christian view takes prayer, patience, study, and persistence. For those who have made it their goal to become good defenders of the faith, there are certain positive disciplines and character traits that one would do well to develop. These help you become a wise apologist. But on the other hand, there are certain pitfalls that can appear that, when left unchecked, can become character traits and make you a foolish apologist. Although there are surely more, here are Ten Pitfalls of the Foolish Apologist :

Big Bang Confirmed: Does This Hold Any Implications for the Christian Worldview?

This provides clear cut evidence that the universe came into existence at a particular point in time. This confirms the main content of arguments used by William Lane Craig such as the Kalam Cosmological Argument and others that use the Big Bang as part of their argumentation. Note that this does not necessarily prove all the tenets of arguments used pertaining to creation, but only the validity that this universe is finite. Apologetic arguments that rely on the Big Bang hold tight. Intelligent design (ID) concepts are also verified by this finding. While this finding does not prove ID, it supports many of the conclusions that ID advocates promote. Science may eventually find a point of limitation eventually when it comes to reality. As agnostic Robert Jastrow (former Director of the Goddard Institute of Astrophysics) in regards to studies on the Big Bang claims that the study of cosmology leads to a belief in a Creator. Jastrow writes:  “A sound explanation may exist for the explosive birth of our Universe; but if it does, science cannot find out what the explanation is. The scientist’s pursuit of the past ends in the moment of creation.

How to Start an Apologetics Ministry in Your Church - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

First, find a church that you enjoy and whose doctrine you agree with and whose leaders will agree with your doctrine. What I mean by this is that you need to make sure there is specific agreement on just about everything (no one is going to agree with anyone 100%). This is important because if you disagree with the pastor on any but the smallest of points (and then you’d better do it humbly), sooner or later that is going to come out and can cause a rift in the church and you are going to be the one who needs to go. Whatever you disagree with should be so small that you won’t feel the need to teach against the pastor.

Aquinas, Evolution, Providence, & Chance - The Poached Egg Christian Worldview and Apologetics Network

Whatever does not have a determinate cause happens by accident. Consequently, if the position mentioned above were true, all the harmony and usefulness found in things would be the result of chance. This was actually what Empedocles held. He asserted that it was by accident that the parts of animals came together in this way through friendship—and this was his explanation of an animal and of a frequent occurrence! This explanation, of course, is absurd, for those things that happen by chance, happen only rarely; we know from experience, however, that harmony and usefulness are found in nature either at all times or at least for the most part. This cannot be the result of mere chance; it must be because an end is intended. What lacks intellect or knowledge, however, cannot tend directly toward an end. It can do this only if someone else’s knowledge has established an end for it, and directs it to that end. Consequently, since natural things have no knowledge, there must be some previously existing intelligence directing them to an end, like an archer who gives a definite motion to an arrow so that it will wing its way to a determined end.
