Here’s What You Can Do About The Persecution of Christians: Stop Being a Lazy Coward

And if we can’t be hassled to praise the Lord at church once a week, we certainly won’t worry about standing by the more difficult and challenging aspects of our faith. Here, many Christians frantically skim through the Bible discarding every piece and part that doesn’t suit the modern lifestyle. We sit up on a perch like gods and construct a new religion for ourselves; one that permits abortion, pornography, premarital sex, adultery, gay marriage, and whatever other sin we feel like indulging in.

On Miracles and Historiography: Can The Supernatural Ever Be The Best Explanation? - Cross Examined - Christian Apologetic Ministry | Frank Turek | Christian Apologetics | Christian Apologetics Speakers

This rejoinder is quite appropriate as far as it goes, but it is incomplete. One may respond by pointing out that, although the supernatural cannot be ruled out a priori , nonetheless there is no way to evaluate the merits of one supernatural explanation over another. Indeed, as the famed Harvard biologist Richard Lewontin pointed out, to “allow a divine foot in the door”, or “appeal to an omnipotent deity” would be to “allow that at any moment the regularities of nature may be ruptured that miracles may happen”. A being endowed with infinite power, or omnipotence, could be invoked to explain absolutely any set of observations — and thus, the argument goes, it really lacks the explanatory power to explain anything. If supernatural explanations are on the table, could one not invoke another miracle hypothesis — perhaps the Muslim god, Allah, deceived the disciples into thinking that Jesus had risen from the dead — after all, Surah An-Nisa 157 in the Qur’an says that the crucifixion of Jesus “was made to appear so” to the Jews.

Chinese scientists genetically modify human embryos

OK, I completely give up. I can see ethical concerns about editing the germline, or even just the soma, if you're actually going to be producing, you know, people. Who will have to live with whatever happens, grow up, and maybe reproduce. You'd better be really, really sure you know what you're doing at that point. There might never be an acceptable way to try it for the first time. I cannot imagine any reasonable concern about editing an embryo you already know will be thrown away at an early stage anyhow. They're just cells, folks, not magic juju objects. And the slippery slope thing doesn't make any sense either. Ethics are, or at least should be, about the interests of people. There's a clear bright line at producing an actual person. Most of the world has arrived at at least a rough consensus that embryos are not people; that's why we have legal elective abortion. Not only is there nothing wrong with this work on non-viable embryos, but there was no good reason to compromise the technique and the results by not working on viable ones in the first place. They're not going to turn into people while you're not looking.

8 Lies Christians Believe About Success

We are big on praying for answers, but not big on waiting for them. We figure if we’ve prayed about something, it’s been heard and blessed. But God so often asks us to wait for his timing, and this waiting hurts. It’s so hard to be patient when you want something now. The world, and the prosperity gospel, teach us to seize opportunities and chase after our dreams. But the Bible says, “Delight yourself in the LORD, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Ps. 37:4). Become pliable to the Lord, submit yourself to him, and then will give you the desires of your heart. Why? Because his desires will have become your desires, not the other way around.

Historians estimate that Nineveh could have been populated with up to 150,000 residents, and during that time, any city with more than 100,000 was a huge metropolis. When Ministry Success Becomes an Idol

When we get to heaven, the true measure of every ministry will be evaluated, and faithfulness to Christ will be fully seen and rewarded. In light of that future, our highest aim should be to finish well, and hear in the end, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” No matter our age, relative fame, or anonymity, may we all be able to say with Paul, “[We] have fought the good fight, [we] have finished the race, [we] have kept the faith” (2 Tim. 4:7).

Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds us all together in perfect harmony. And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. Caravaggio: Supper at Emmaus (1601)

Almost identical copies of this painting and of The Incredulity of Saint Thomas were found in a church in the French Loire town of Loches in 1999. After investigation, it was announced in 2006 that both works were authentic Caravaggios. Both contain the shield of arms of Philippe de Bethune, a friend of Caravaggio's and French ambassador in Rome. Records show that De Bethune acquired four paintings from his friend. Caravaggio often made several copies of his own paintings.

Border Crossing: Renting to Churches of Other Cultures Part 1

Renting as an exchange of money for space is neither very spiritual nor very meaningful. When necessary, it does not need to cause harm. It can satisfy material needs, grow into something more, and open opportunities for acts of kindness. But for the sake of integrity, respect, and success, potential partners should think twice—that is, address the why —before choosing to rent for material gain.

A Plea at the Premiere of Presidential Politicking

…let’s do this: Let’s let the politicians make their cases independently of our meetings. Let’s focus the Southern Baptist Convention Annual Meeting on prayer and spiritual awakening, as President Ronnie Floyd has so wonderfully asked us to do. Let’s extend our apologies to Dr. Ben Carson and hear Kelvin Cochran in his place. If we need a political rally, let’s have one, separate from our Annual Meeting, and let’s invite ALL of the candidates to come and to make their promises. Let’s consider strongly that we might vote for Dr. Ben Carson (I’ve got his book—a signed copy, no less!—and would vote for him fifty times before I’d vote for Jeb Bush), but let us not change ONE IOTA what we say about and how we relate to Seventh-Day Adventists. Let us make it a believable fiction, at the very least, that what we say about God means more to us than what we say about politics.

Concerns About Dr. Ben Carson’s Invitation To The SBC Pastors’ Conference

There continue to be perceptions in our culture that the SBC is in bed with the Republican Party, and actions such as having Dr. Carson speak at the SBC Pastor’s Conference only prove that perception correct. These perceptions continue to hamper our witness in an increasingly purple America, where missional efforts are often misunderstood as Southern Baptists asking people to become more politically conservative. While the convention hall room will be full of red politically, many of our congregations back home are increasingly politically diverse, and these one-sided affiliations can be difficult to explain, considering many already believe that Southern Baptists view God as a Republican. In fact, we have more in common with a born again Christian who is a registered Democrat, than we do with a universalist Seventh-Day Adventist who is a conservative. Perhaps Southern Baptists need to be reminded of what unites us together.

Churches Need to Stop Avoiding Talking About Sexual Abuse

I am sorry for what happened to you as a child and for sharing what your struggles and gains. That said, and I wish more than anything that it wasn't true, pretty much the only thing society as a whole talks about is sexual abuse - specifically of children. Each church talks about it often: who can help in daycare, who is able to volunteer for youth group, background checks, fingerprinting. All of those things are there for nothing more than to curtail sexual abuse. Now it is certainly possible that we are simply saying the same thing in different ways. Whereas you say that the church in general never speaks about sexual abuse in terms of victims, I am saying that the church speaks more than anything on those who were the perpetrators. Christians are the most staunch proponents of sex offender laws that, without exception, do nothing to actually stop the problems our nation is facing. Christians picket homes of offenders, petition counties to make harsher zoning laws, and have prayer services to stop sex offenders from moving into neighborhoods. The church as a whole is obsessed with sex offenses, and I have been in many churches where the issue is brought up openly and loudly.

http://creation.com/epigenetics-challenges-neo-darwinism?utm_content=buffer99d38&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter.com&utm_campaign=buffer

Professor Alan Cooper of the University of Adelaide’s Australian Centre for Ancient DNA (ACAD) says: "The climate record shows that very rapid change has been a persistent feature of the recent past, and organisms would need to adapt to these changes in their environment equally quickly. Standard mutation and selection processes are likely to be too slow in many of these situations.” 12 And so the study of epigenetics promises to potentially answer many questions for scientists working on models of biblical creation. Could it be one of the mechanisms that our omniscient and omnipotent God used to prepare the various kinds He created to adapt rapidly to different environments after the Fall (and subsequently the Flood)? Children born soon after the Dutch Hunger Winter, and their children after them, with their smaller physiques, would have been more likely to survive an extended famine. In the same manner, epigenetic processes in many organisms, with feedback from the environment regulating the switching on and off of certain genes, could have been one of God’s mechanisms enabling creatures to respond rapidly to environmental change.

Why this Evangelical is Grateful for the Mainline Church

Here’s a bit of the backstory: I sometimes say that I am “denominationally confused.” I was baptized Episcopalian, confirmed Presbyterian, and married in the Congregational church I attended through college. Over the fifteen years of our marriage (which has included moving to four different towns), my husband and I have worshiped in an Episcopal church, a non-denominational church, a Vineyard church, and a Covenant church. Each of these churches has offered distinct gifts to us—the lofty liturgy of an Episcopal cathedral, the emphasis on global missions at the non-denominational church, the healing prayer at the Vineyard, the solid preaching and welcoming community at the Covenant. It would be easy to critique any of these churches, but overall I am grateful for them each in their own way, and I’m grateful for their variety. It has shown me so much more about the diversity of God’s healing work in the world.

I couldn’t understand how they could so casually damn abuelita and others who followed Jesus like her. I challenged one history professor, asking about all the professing Christians who were Roman Catholic or Eastern Orthodox prior to the Protestant Reformation: “Are you saying they all went to hell?” He replied that most of them probably did, but “God always has a remnant.” That’s a sobering sentiment worth pausing over.

Activists demand Obama appoint envoy for persecuted Middle Eastern Christians - Religion News Service

The situation requires a changing of minds and hearts on the part of those who commit these acts as a matter of policy. Unfortunately, that tends to happen to one heart and mind at a time while new recruits to the legions of homicidal maniacs outstrip the repentant by a factor of ten, or a 100, or a 1,000. Appointing an envoy will accomplish precisely nothing. Skeptics and naysayers will scoff and sneer, but I suggest concerted prayer on the part of people of faith to whom this matters more than their next latte’, twitter message…or indeed, internet post. May God have mercy both on the slayers and the slain. That the slayers might repent and perform mercy…that they may receive mercy in Y’shua’s Name.
