Was Paul the Founder of Christianity?

Jesus and Paul express the same views on Christology. Some skeptics believe that Paul elevated the status of Jesus to a new level—the level of the divine. Shows such as PBS’s special From Jesus to Christ hold that Paul elevated the status of Jesus to a new level and one that Jesus himself did not accept. Is this true? Not at all! Again, Paul learned his Christology from Jesus and the early church. Two of the loftiest claims of Jesus’s divinity in Paul’s letters are found in Philippians 2:6-11 and Colossians 1:15-20. However, further investigation shows that the two passages are not original to Paul. They are in fact pre-New Testament hymns that most likely date to within 3-5 years of Jesus’s crucifixion and resurrection. Thus, Paul is relaying information that is original to the early church. Even still, one must note the examples of divine status that Jesus gave himself. The “I am” statements in John’s Gospel relate to the divine name of God (Yahweh means “I am what I am”). Jesus’s favorite title for himself is “Son of Man.” The Son of Man title holds a direct correlation to Daniel’s Son of Man who approaches the Ancient of Day.

Will California Go from Banning Religious Books to Burning Them? | The Stream

So, while one part of me says, “Go ahead and ignore our warnings,” another part of me says, “Don’t let it come to that! It’s not too late to stand and act. It’s not to late to debunk the myth that homosexuality is innate and immutable. It’s not to late to expose the lies that there is no such thing as ex-gay (or ex-trans). It’s not too late to get the truth out to the world.”

Caring About Creation for the Right Reasons

I have loved the outdoors ever since my dad first took me camping with the Cub Scouts. It was the last day of our trip in the Tinkers Falls area of upstate New York. As we left the forest for the car, I distanced myself from the others and began to cry. My father ran over to me and said, “What’s the matter, Tommy; are you homesick? Don’t worry; we will be home soon.” To which I replied as tears poured down my cheeks, “I don’t want to go home! I want to stay!”

Implications of the Resurrection

Eight days ago, we celebrated Easter. In the weeks prior, we examined the evidence for the Resurrection and culminated that series on Easter Sunday. Having concluded that the Resurrection is the best explanation of the evidence, we will here examine some of the implications of the resurrection of Jesus. They may seem obvious, but the implications of the Resurrection affect how we do apologetics.

Is the Old Testament Reliable?

The Old Testament was originally written in Hebrew (with a few chapters penned in Aramaic).  It contains thirty-nine books written from about 1400-400 B.C.  The scribes who copied and preserved the text were careful and extremely thorough.  Effective safeguards were implemented as part of a painstaking process to ensure the accurate transmission of the text.  Scribes developed numerical systems to insure an accurate copy: they counted the number of lines, letters, and words per page of the new copy and then compared it to the original.  If differences were present, the copy was destroyed; they had to start over.

LEADERS THAT LIVE RENEWED

The biggest problem I encounter (and I include myself in this) is that most of us don’t really understand the fullness of who we are in Jesus, yet. That’s our journey. That’s our passion. That’s our joy. That’s going to be our endless source of delight for leaders and community members alike.

5 More Reasons Why I Trust the Bible

Some time ago I wrote a post called “ Why I Trust the Bible .” In that article, I gave five reasons why I personally believe the Bible to be trustworthy. There are, of course, many more reasons than that to believe the Bible is true, so I thought it would be a good idea to share five more reasons why we can trust the Bible. We have confidence in the Bible as God’s true and trusted speech to us because:

Jesus said, “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32 NLT). You’re not going to be free until you know the truth. The secret to personal change is not a pill, program, or process. It’s not therapy, a book, or a seminar. It’s not positive thinking or psychology. The proof of personal change is found in the truth. You have to know and face the truth about yourself, God, and your relationships before you can change.

Student Testimony: Apologetics as an Aid to Faith's Renewal

My name is Joshua Johnstone, and the following is my testimonial concerning my renewal of faith in Christ. First, a bit of background: Born and raised in North Carolina, my family sporadically attended an Episcopal church as I was growing up. I participated actively in the church as an acolyte and cross bearer, and was confirmed at the age of fifteen. Towards the end of high school and into my undergrad years at NC State University, I fell out of practice with my faith, and grew more and more distant from God. I tend to think very analytically, and I started to ask myself difficult questions. Why does suffering exist if there is an active, benevolent God? Why do we ask God for things through prayer if He already has a plan? How could Christ have performed miracles, and how could he have been raised from the dead? Is there a need for God when science can explain such a great deal?

27
Why Study Theology?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how important would you say each of these texts is? Would you say they have a high level of importance? If you believe any or all of these texts have a high level of importance, how important is it that you and I understand what they mean? If you said, “Very,” you are correct. Now consider the fact that the list above contains a mere six verses out of the entire Word of God. It is just as important to understand the rest of Scripture as it is to understand these six verses. It is, after all, the very Word of God. This is another reason why the study of theology is relevant. It helps us understand Scripture and to think and speak truly about what God has revealed in His Word.

Pre-Adaptation: In Evolutionary Explanations, Too Much Serendipity | Evolution News

To support their position, evolutionists often appeal to a pre-adaptation argument. This argument claims that the various sub-components (gene products, etc.), needed for the genetically complex trait, were each needed for some other function. Therefore, they evolved individually and independently, only later to serendipitously fit together perfectly and, in so doing, form a new structure with a new function that just happened to be needed. As Richard Dawkins once put it :

Atheism Is Religion

Of particular concern is question 19, which is the only optional question on the census form. This question is the religious identity question. Several different options are available, including six Christian denominations as well as Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. There is also an “other” category to mark, and then additional information needs to be supplied in a text box. But what makes this question stand out is that “no religion” is the first option to choose from. Now this is absurd, because no one can claim they have no religion! So that option should be totally deleted from the census form.

12 things Atheists should thank Christians for - Premier Christian Radio

Who stopped the abominable slaughter of the amphitheatres and the trade in gladiators? Christians. The largest aid organisation working with the homeless, the Salvation Army started by William and Catherine Booth, proclaims its Christian ethos in its very name. The Red Cross was started by Henry Dunant – a Christian. Alcoholics Anonymous was started by Christians and has been influenced by Christian thinking. The modern hospice movement was founded by Cicely Saunders – a Christian. The Samaritans, with their invaluable ministry to the suicidal and desperate, was founded by the Reverend Chad Varah. Given that the YMCA was originally the Young Men’s Christian Association I hardly need to elaborate there, do I?

The God Who Commands Our Emotions

Which is why Augustine says, “Command what you will, and give what you command.” Because premise number three in Fletcher’s argument is true. You can’t turn them on and off, which is why people think they can’t be commanded. It makes us feel helpless. “You are commanding me to be happy in Jesus? What do you expect me to do — kind of start jumping up and down and hope it happens?” That is the kind of response you get.

Still thinking about Chick-fil-A, as well as the emerging face of world Christianity

If we look beyond the liberal West, we see that another Christian revolution, quite different from the one being called for in affluent American suburbs and upscale urban parishes, is already in progress. Worldwide, Christianity is actually moving toward supernaturalism and neo-orthodoxy, and in many ways toward the ancient world view expressed in the New Testament: a vision of Jesus as the embodiment of divine power, who overcomes the evil forces that inflict calamity and sickness upon the human race. In the global South (the areas that we often think of primarily as the Third World) huge and growing Christian populations -- currently 480 million in Latin America, 360 million in Africa, and 313 million in Asia, compared with 260 million in North America -- now make up what the Catholic scholar Walbert Buhlmann has called the Third Church, a form of Christianity as distinct as Protestantism or Orthodoxy, and one that is likely to become dominant in the faith. The revolution taking place in Africa, Asia, and Latin America is far more sweeping in its implications than any current shifts in North American religion, whether Catholic or Protestant.

“Man is the measure of all things" - Protagoras ————— If this is true then the moral relativist have no choice but to say that "he or she" may not like the atrocities committed by others, but that's just their opinion since they cannot objectively condemn them.
