Case Closed or Mind Open? | The Table: The Journal of the Biola University Center for Christian Thought

However, to be open-minded does not mean one should be open to any and all views. For instance, it would be intellectually—and perhaps even morally—vicious to be open to the possibility that, say, slavery or genocide is a good idea, or that rape or pedophilia may be morally permissible. These and many other issues are ones that even the generally open-minded person should be foreclosed on. But where mature and intelligent people disagree, such as regarding the moral and social issues mentioned earlier, absolute foreclosure seems inappropriate. Belief commitment, even firm conviction, may be appropriate on each of these issues. But the open-minded person recognizes that, after all, some of her views may be false or at least to some degree mistaken. So she should be willing to entertain new evidence or give further arguments a serious look.

Seven Tips & Tricks to Memorize Psalms | Jean E. Jones

Did my last post, Why Memorize Psalms? 10 Good Reasons , leave you wondering just how anyone would go about memorizing psalms? Now, I know people who can read a long passage a few times and it’s memorized. I’m not like that. So when I decided to memorize some psalms, I first read up on memory tricks. Here are six tips I’ve found particularly helpful.

The shunning of Ryan T. Anderson: When support for gay marriage gets ugly

In his longer apology, Micciche expressed "sincere regret" for his "lack of sensitivity" and the "anguish and confusion" and "pain" the link inflicted on members of the school community who thought the link implied that the school was standing behind Anderson's views. Of course this could have been rectified with the addition of a simple, one-sentence note clarifying that a link does not imply an endorsement. But Micciche obviously thought this was insufficient for someone whose beliefs "begin from an assumption of inequality and that argue for the denial of rights to an entire segment of the population based on their identity." The only acceptable thing to do with such a person is to cut ties completely.

Is Poor Environmental Stewardship Sinful?

I've heard the argument recently that Christians need to focus on the fundamentals of our faith only, and that topics like this only make Christians spin their wheels. I couldn't disagree more with this perspective. Surely there is time and room to consider how to reduce one's impact on the earth and, in doing so, leave more for future generations as well as minimize the vast effects our over consumption is having now. In doing so we are tending to God's wonderful creation and loving our neighbor (no matter where or when our neighbor lives).

It crushes my spirit that because of my actions people may presently feel less able to engage and creatively accomplish the things they hope to accomplish in their programs and across the campus.

Aspiring to the Great Commission Is Not Enough: Knowing the Gospel Doesn’t Mean We’re Sharing It

It’s too reductionistic, or too canned.” So they make all these objections on the means and yet they don’t have any alternative ways for sharing the Gospel.

Senate passes trafficking bill 99-0, ending long abortion fight

The deal that resolved the stalemate requires money for the victims’ fund to come from two sources: criminal fines and money that Congress previously appropriated. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) touted the vote as a win for Republicans and anti-abortion groups, saying that under the agreement, the trafficking legislation “won’t violate longstanding, bipartisan Hyde precedent.” Republicans also shot down a last-ditch effort by Democrats to strip the abortion provisions from the legislation, which if successful would likely have killed the bill. Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) urged his colleagues to remove “the divisive language that limits victims services and has held us up for so long." "Congress has a long history of passing legislation to address human trafficking," he said. "We've consistently done so without abortion politics being in the discussion." But Leahy was ultimately unsuccessful, with Democratic Sens. Bob Casey Jr. (Pa.), Joe Donnelly (Ind.) and Joe Manchin (W.Va.) voting against him. But Democrats also claimed victory in the abortion fight, arguing that they blocked a Republican attempt to expand the abortion restrictions to private funding.

The Son of God and Muslim Idiom Translations - Christian Research Institute

Wycliffe has been adamant about their translation practices among Muslims, and until recently, unresponsive to complaint or criticism from Christian groups across the world. It is only fair to note that Wycliffe/SIL is not alone in producing Muslim Idiom Translations. Frontiers Mission and Global Partners for Development also play a strategic role in producing and disseminating MITs. There is a genuine fear on the part of these and other mission ventures to Muslims that a strict and literal translation of familial language—Father, Son, begotten—will keep Muslims from reading God’s Word and from coming to salvation in Christ.

Churches Need to Stop Avoiding Talking About Sexual Abuse

Dear New Seminarian . . . Sincerely, Your Baptist Brother

Finally, read J.I. Packer’s Knowing God . You’ll have time during your M.Div. to get into the technicalities of the hypostatic union. But let Packer’s hugely influential volume be a reminder to you of what matters most. The greatest aspiration you can have for your life and ministry is to know God more fully, more deeply. And here’s the wonderful hope in that calling—because God is infinite in his attributes, you will never come to a moment of completion in your knowledge of Him, whether in this life or the one to come. Along with the saints from throughout the ages, you and I will spend eternity expanding and growing our capacity to know God and, as we do, so too will our joy in him increase. Theology exists for the sake of devotion and doxology. Don’t miss that and you’ll find a reminder that seminary is just a means to an end, the greatest end of all.

The Jesus Story: Are These Writings Really Alive?

Recapture the awe, the mystery, the passion and the power of God's Word. The Bible is no ordinary book. Within its pages are the hidden treasures to meet your needs, provide direction for your life, and give practical insight for living a life of fulfillment and joy. That is not merely hype; it is what the author of the book intended from the beginning. It reveals the true heart of a God who loves you and wants you to discover him in his book. He is the greatest treasure you and I could ever find. And he wants to be found. "You shall seek Me and find Me, when you shall search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you, says the Lord" (Jer. 29:13-14).

The ICC Is a permanent court, unlike the two ad hoc International Criminal Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, that has the power under certain conditions to investigate and prosecute individuals accused of committing an atrocity crime within the ICC's jurisdiction after July 1, 2002. As of 6 January 2015, 123 states have ratified or acceded to the Rome Statute. (The U.S. has made it clear it will not ratify this treaty.)

On My Shelf: Life and Books with Joe Carter

Obedience is such a core theme of the Bible that I don’t know how I missed it for so long. And now I don’t know what to do with that realization. Jesus says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Yet we live in a culture where obedience is considered an optional add-on to faith and the Christian life.

What Does the Bible Really Teach about Homosexuality? |

The topic of homosexuality has reached an epidemic level in many Christian circles. We are seeing many people cave on this issue and give it up as if the Bible isn’t clear on this issue. In fact, it could be said that the issue of homosexuality among Christians is an issue because of how we view the Bible. The question around this debate is this, “Is the Bible clear on what it teaches about homosexuality? Or is it not?” Christians have long held to the authority, inspiration, inerrancy, sufficiency, and clarity of the Scriptures. The debate on this issue relates to the sufficiency of Scripture, which relates to the question of, “Do we have to practice what the Bible teaches?”, and, “Does it mean what it says about homosexuality?” In other words, “Is the Bible to be believed when it says homosexuality is wrong?” or, “Can we just make up our own interpretation of the relevant text and revise it to fit our own opinion?” This is what many people are doing. It’s also why a book like Kevin DeYoung’s new book  What Does the Bible Really Teach About Homosexuality?  is so needed.

Building a Better Earth Day

My question is why would you want to celebrate Earth day? This was started by a misguided Senator Gaylord nelson 40 years ago. Today we have the Earth Day network pushing for a climate bill based on the same false information Al Gore sold us in his movie “An Inconvenient truth.” I don’t think you have to be a Christian to see through the global warming fraud, the planet is not warming and human being’s are not causing it. Children are being brainwashed from elementary school through college. The whole day has turned into a field day for the advertising industry so people can feel good about themselves for doing something green. I have really enjoyed your books and your other writings, I have been meaning to get up to your Church for a conference, blessings.

A Hidden Opportunity in Your Church

Given the statistics, whether you realize it or not, there’s a good chance that you have a family in your congregation who’s parenting a child with Autism and running through these same questions as they enter your sanctuary. And there’s a good chance that you may be tempted to overlook their needs: the constant hum of ministry demands and Sunday gatherings require efficiency, consistency, and structure.

How People In Wedding Trades Can Defend Themselves

I’m optimistic that the law will eventually come to its senses and give wide berth to Christians in the wedding trades, or even to non-Christian libertarians who simply don’t want to be told who they have to do business with. Perhaps James O’Keefe will covertly record owners of a black-owned florist shop being asked to create an arrangement for a “KKK” event, or a Muslim-owned catering service being asked to cater a Bar Mitzvah. But something will eventually jar the nation out of its deep-seated fear of not giving gay marriage complete affirmation by every citizen at the expense of religious freedom.

Dinner With Friends Is My Church. Is That OK?

A husband and wife chatting over a fire, a couple of friends having a game of darts in a pub, a man reading a book in his own room or digging in his own garden—that is what the State is there for. And unless they are helping to increase and prolong and protect such moments, all the laws, parliaments, armies, courts, police, economics, etc., are simply a waste of time. In the same way the Church exists for nothing else but to draw men into Christ, to make them little Christs. If they are not doing that, all the cathedrals, clergy, missions, sermons, even the Bible itself, are simply a waste of time. God became Man for no other purpose. It is even doubtful, you know, whether the whole universe was created for any other purpose.

One of the most mysterious aspects of the new birth is the instantaneous way in which the Holy Spirit brings it about. For some people, new birth has been an instant transformation; individuals who have long been hostile or indifferent to God suddenly find themselves responding to the Gospel as new creatures. For others, the moment of being born again might be the culmination of a long and gradual journey toward the Savior. In either case, there comes a decisive moment when the sinner passes from death to life and from judgment to salvation. Dr. Lawson will explore the instantaneous nature of this moment and will examine conversion accounts from Scripture and church history.

While perusing the internet recently, I happened across a discussion among some Reformed Christians about the concept of geocentrism — the belief that the earth is stationary and at the center of the universe. Some of the participants in the discussion were arguing that the Bible teaches geocentrism. Others were arguing that science has definitively proven that the earth circles the sun, therefore the Bible must not be teaching geocentrism. As I read through the discussion, it became clear that several participants saw the entire debate as a conflict between Scripture and science. As they saw it, those who reject geocentrism are rejecting the Bible. In another similar online discussion, a Reformed participant confessed that if he were ever convinced that the universe was billions of years old, he would renounce Christianity because such a discovery would mean the Bible is untrue.

When Ministry Success Becomes an Idol

When we get to heaven, the true measure of every ministry will be evaluated, and faithfulness to Christ will be fully seen and rewarded. In light of that future, our highest aim should be to finish well, and hear in the end, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” No matter our age, relative fame, or anonymity, may we all be able to say with Paul, “[We] have fought the good fight, [we] have finished the race, [we] have kept the faith” (2 Tim. 4:7).
