Oops! Trump Referred to 9/11 as '7/11' Yesterday

Last night—the night before the New York state primary election—at a rally in Buffalo, New York, Donald Trump evidently got a little mixed up. Because he referred to the September 11 attacks as "7/11." Unfortunately, Trump barreled through the mistake without missing a beat, or pausing to correct himself: “I was down there, and I watched our police and our fireman, down there on 7/11, down at the World Trade Center right after it came down. And I saw the greatest people I’ve ever seen in action. I saw the bravest people I’ve ever seen, including the construction workers, including every person down there." Whether he is confused about the date of the attacks or just had Slurpees on the brain remains unclear. But either way—oof!

What I Wish I Knew About My Body in My Twenties

Part of the angst about attractiveness and the shape and size of our bodies stems from a culture that is obsessed with sex. And when the act of sex is at the center of a culture’s focus, then bodies become hyper-sexualized—everything about their attractiveness stems from sexualized ideals. But what I wish I had known in my twenties was that the other aspects of sex—the emotional aspect, the spiritual aspect, the relational aspect. These are the things that make sex deeply satisfying, over and over again, with the same person, in the context of a godly marriage.

Harriet Tubman Will Be Featured on New $20 Bill

Treasury Secretary Jack Lew is set to announced that the Treasury Department will remove Andrew Jackson's face from the $20 bill and replace him with Harriet Tubman. And, Alexander Hamilton will stay on the $10 bill, despite previous plans to remove him as well. Politico reports the back of the $10 bill will now feature leaders in the movement to give women the right to vote, and a redesigned $5 bill will feature leaders of the Civil Rights era. But don't worry about Jackson: The seventh president will most likely land somewhere on the back of the $20 bill. He's still got out back (get it?).

A Gutsy Prayer for Grown Men

You may have memorized a version of the Lord’s Prayer when you were younger. It’s simple enough for children to commit to memory. But we need to remember that Jesus gave this prayer to twelve grown men. This is not just a prayer for sixth-grade Sunday School, but for all of life. Jesus taught these men this simple, yet awe-inspiring prayer, and then sent them into the world to be persecuted and eventually killed for their faith. The Lord’s Prayer isn’t a childhood toy to be shelved and remembered with affection. It’s not for nostalgia. These are words to be rehearsed and held with conviction, through whatever we face or suffer in this life, until our final breath.

Is the Christian Life Peace or War?

3) The third thing it does is help balance. I don’t know if you have ever struggled with this like I and people in my church do: the balance between, Life as fight and life as rest. Matthew 7:14, “The gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.” So the Christian life is hard, right? It is hard. It is a fight. It is war. That is one thing. And if that is the only way you think, you are probably going to be a sick person, because you also know another thing Jesus said in Matthew. That is Matthew 7. Always keep Matthew 11 and 7 together: 7, 11. Maybe you remember it that way. What did he say in chapter 11? “Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you” — say it, — “rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle [meek] and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls” (Matthew 11:28–29).

12 The Faith of Christopher Hitchens: The Restless Soul of the World's Most Notorious Atheist: Larry Alex Taunton: 9780718022174: Amazon.com: Books

I was privileged to receive an advance reader’s copy of Larry Taunton’s The Faith of Christopher Hitchens. A fantastic book! Whether you loved or despised the late Christopher Hitchens, whether you’re an ardent atheist or an ardent evangelical, you need to read this book to find out what Christian Hitchens was really like. This is, first of all, a story about friendship, in this case—and what could be more unlikely?—the deep friendship between the atheist Hitchens and the evangelical, Larry Taunton. Taunton writes beautifully and thoughtfully about every aspect of their long friendship, from their first meeting and first debate, to Hitchens’ decline, death, and funeral. Some parts are both touching and amusing—Taunton shepherding the drunk Hitchens up the stairs in the Taunton family home, and tucking him into bed. Some parts are a complete surprise—what Hitchens really thought of fellow-atheist Richard Dawkins’ God Delusion. Some parts are a great shock—Taunton and Hitchens driving cross-country together, studying the Gospel of John together (yes, the Gospel of John…with Hitchens doing the reading while Taunton drove).

Will People Spend Eternity in Hell?

I find it ironic that people who say hell is immoral often explicitly say that they believe certain things are unforgivable, such as brutal pedophilia and other sexual violence. If they actually believe that, then why should not God be able to think so also? I mean, if someone brutally rapes children without a hint of remorse, is such a person someone I would want to see forgiven? Personally, I'm not so sure. Plus, the sheer depths of depravity that people can sink to are sometimes unfathomable, and we in the west are embarassingly unfamiliar with them. Look at what is happening in the Congo Republic or South African Republic. Tell me you think those people deserve forgiveness no matter if they would spit in the face of God and not feel remorse!

9 Things You Should Know About Harriet Tubman

9. From the proceeds of a biography written by a supporter, Tubman was able to buy a property with two buildings on 26 acres near her home in Auburn, New York. She later deeded the land to the African Methodist Episcopal (A.M.E.) Zion Church, to be used as a home for the elderly (which she wanted to be  named John Brown Hall ). At the time she attended the mostly white Central Presbyterian Church, but she later became active in the A.M.E. church, where her husband was a trustee. In 1908, the A.M.E. Zion regional conference voted to take an annual collection for the maintenance of what was now called the Harriet Tubman Home for the Aged . Tubman herself was the only female member on a board of trustees dominated by pastors. By 1911, she was so ill and impoverished that she was admitted to the home named after her. She died in 1913, with her last words being, “ I go to prepare a place for you .”

5 Reasons Why the New Calvinism Is Worth Supporting

By God’s grace, the evangelical church in North America is becoming more racially diverse. While at times this diversity has caused tension, there is also the opportunity for the gospel to move us forward. Breakout sessions at T4G discussed the challenges and opportunities for the Hispanic, African American, and Asian American churches. I participated in the session exploring the future of the Asian American church. It was a time of rich reflection and discussion as we look to the future work of the gospel in North America. I’m likewise encouraged to see that  TGC’s women’s conference this summer  had made a concerted effort to seek substantial ethnic diversity among its speakers.

18 Trump: Transgender people can use whatever bathroom they want

Leave it the way it is," he said, referring to companies that have canceled plans to move or expand businesses in the state as a result of the law, which bans transgender individuals from using a bathroom that does not match their gender at birth.

12 Apologetics Quotes: God, Science, Faith, and the Bible

The world of strict naturalism in which clever mathematical laws all by themselves bring the universe and life into existence, is pure [science] fiction. Theories and laws do not bring matter/energy into existence.  The view that they nevertheless somehow have the capacity seems a rather desperate refuge...from the alternative possibility...Trying to avoid the clear evidence for the existence of a divine intelligence behind nature, atheist scientists are forced to ascribe creative powers to less and less credible candidates like mass/energy and the laws of nature.

Five atheists who lost faith in atheism

Atheism is cool. At least, that's the popular perception of a worldview that's enjoyed a rebrand and a renaissance in the last couple of decades. Authors like Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens have issued forceful public challenges to the claims of the major faiths and the rights they've traditionally been granted, while well-respected and high-profile public figures have lent vocal support to their ideas. When Stephen Fry outlined an atheist (or even anti-theist) position on an Irish talk show, the interview went viral in hours, while comedian Ricky Gervais frequently uses his substantial platform to attack and undermine religion in film and stand-up.

Jane Eyre and Our Age of Authenticity

Jane’s self-determination does make her a modern, self-created subject. But because she turns outward rather than inward, she achieves the genuine authenticity Taylor describes. In using her sense of self and her moral agency to become the person God calls her to be, Jane achieves genuine authenticity and true freedom. And in portraying a character whose self-creation is rooted in something outside the self, Bronte offered a great gift to the modern world.

24
You Also Are in the Body

In this political and cultural climate, the church in the United States finds itself highly polarized. The church is in the midst of vigorous discussions concerning race, politics, ecclesial corruption, doctrinal purity, and more. Yet we must take care not to repeat history’s mistakes. The early North African church was divided against itself and debating internal theological points while Christians were being obliterated by those hostile to the name of Christ. We must guard against focusing inward at critical moments when we should stand and face outward. As one Protestant Syrian sister warned us in a meeting just a few weeks ago, “It was not ISIS that destroyed the Church in Syria; it was our divisions. Be careful; it can happen to you, too.”

Why Hillary Clinton’s Abortion Comments Are So Problematic

Clinton’s statement may have rocked the boat with both conservatives and liberals, those for and those against abortion. But at the end of the day, after we’ve filtered through the political arguments, let’s remember why we have rights and where they came from in the first place. And let’s be a people who affirm those rights for others, just as if they were our own.

But these will soon pass. Like Michael Jackson, Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Holly, and Hank Williams, Prince Rogers Nelson’s music will be remembered, but our lives will quickly move on. 27
The Lords Prayer

And so let me explain this to you. The more you get to know God as Father, the easier it will be to talk to your Dad. I’ll give you an example. Let’s say there was a child who was abandoned, abused, an orphan, neglected. And one day, a loving father, a gracious, kind man came to that child, got down on one knee, and looked that child in the eye with a big smile and said, “Today, I’ve chosen to adopt you. From this day forward, you’re my child. You will receive my last name. You will inherit everything that I have. You’re being adopted into a large family. You’ve now got a lot of brothers and sisters who love you and can’t wait to meet you. I love you with a never-ending love. There’s nothing you can do to make me love you more and there’s nothing you’ll ever do to cause me to love you less. I love you with a perfect love that I’ll never, never take back. Additionally, no matter what you do, I’ll always pursue you and forgive you. And I’m gonna serve you and I’m gonna teach you and I’m gonna love you and I’m gonna feed you and I’m gonna help you. And for the rest of your life, I’m gonna do very good things for you and I’ll never abandon or betray or harm you.

When the Abortion Doctor I Protested Was Killed by a Sniper

One bitter cold January morning, my husband and I arose at 5, donned endless layers of clothing, and sat with dozens of others before the doors of one local abortion clinic. We remained there all the hours it took for the police to carry each of us away, one by one, as we passively resisted. Going limp bought time. It took four officers to carry one person away from the building and into the police bus that would take us to the courtroom to be booked. No abortions took place in the facility that day—or on many other days at other facilities throughout the city and beyond. Operation Rescue claims to have accrued more than 75,000 arrests for nonviolent blockades, calling itself the largest civil disobedience movement in American history. Like all peaceful civil disobedience in pursuit of justice, I believed our work was noble, honorable, and just. I still do.

Russell Moore's Model is a Decaffeinated Jesus

It’s not so much that we are afraid of non-Christian people who may be hostile to what we believe. A lot of it is more fear of other Christians. A lot of the kind of engagement that we see has nothing to do with people on the outside at all; it has everything to do with this constant loop of reassuring other Christians, “I’m part of the team, and I’m part of the tribe, and the way that you know that is because I’m giving these talking points about how awful the people on the outside are.” That’s not just a challenge for people who are in public ministries—it’s a challenge for anybody with a Facebook page. One of the major things has to be to genuinely love and identify with people who disagree with you to the point that you understand why they hold the views that they hold. And that takes a lot of time and effort and a lot of relationship building. If you get up and you do this sort of ministry that isn’t really about persuading people on the outside, but it’s just about encouraging Christians you’re not crazy and “here’s why the other view is stupid and evil,” there are people who are overhearing that who are then going to meet people and realize they don’t stand up to the caricature.

35 No Tolerance for Religious Tolerance?

As Jennifer Marshall points out, true advocates of cultural coexistence seek conscience protections for all , not just those who adhere to the vision of the sexual revolution. Citing a poll that says 63 percent of state residents support the law, Jennifer writes, “Citizens in Mississippi and elsewhere are looking for solutions that defuse cultural tension over issues of sexual orientation and gender identity . . .The corporate establishment’s campaign against these common sense policies disregards all that. Citizens would do well to see through the big business marketing blitz against religious liberty. This corporate messaging puts neither the common good nor constitutional principle first.”

The Historicity of the New Testament

All of these questions and more can be taken to our study of the Biblical texts. Beginning with the question of manuscripts, the New Testament has over 27,000 partial manuscripts to compare and study. While none of them are the original penned manuscripts, their remarkable similarity and consistency is a huge mark in favor of the NT’s reliability. To put these numbers in perspective, the closest other text from the ancient world is the Illiad which has around 500 surviving partial manuscripts. The New Testament, particularly the Gospels, are also written based largely on eyewitness testimony. This is not a story that has grown in the telling, the writers are writing about their own personal experiences. They are also writing to an audience of fellow eyewitnesses. When most of the texts in the NT began to be circulated, the people who lived and experienced the events recorded were still living. If these texts were deceiptful, the hundreds of people who were present at the sermon on the mount or the feeding of the 5000 or the crucifixion could have denounced the writings as false.

Castro Made a Rare Public Address Yesterday. It's Not Good News for Younger Cubans

Yesterday, Fidel Castro made his first and longest public address in years. Castro, whose 90th birthday is coming up in August, said his farewell to Cuba’s Communist Party and encouraged members to press on in his absence. "Soon, I will be 90. Our turn comes to us all but the ideas of Cuban communism will endure," said Castro at the close of a four-day party congress in Havana. While Castro is taking his leave, the Communist Party announced that Fidel Castro’s brother, President Raúl Castro, and the president’s second-in-command, José Ramón Machado Ventura, will continue to lead the party for at least part of another five-year term.
