A Quantum Christian

As he read, he became increasingly and utterly astonished to find that the Bible – the book he’d dismissed out of hand as a stupid fairy tale – was probably one of the most precise books of quantum physics he’d ever run into. This was not at all what he had expected, and as a scientist knowledgeable in modern physics, it started to turn his whole epistemological orientation on its head. Dennis had long been fascinated with the study of light, and to him, the quantum physics of light precisely explained the Christian doctrine of the Trinity. That brought him to his knees.

Why We Need Apologetics

For the longest time I used to think tracts were a horrible way of evangelizing and reaching out non-believers. To me it seemed confronting and ineffective. In fact I had never heard of a person that had come to Christ from reading a tract, I only heard stories of people being annoyed even angered by the flyers. That all changed when I was in Nepal and I met pastor Meg. Long story short, Meg was at the end of his rope and found himself digging through trash for food. He found a tract and after reading it over he dedicated his life to Christ and now is a pastor in Nepal.

Four Things You Can Do When Someone Challenges Your Faith - February Mentoring Letter 2017 | Stand to Reason

So there it is. When you feel the big chill—when you’re shaken by a conversation, or an article, or a presentation that challenges your core convictions—don’t panic. Instead, use the system. First isolate the claims. Second, list the reasons. Third, do the assessment. You’ll be amazed at how effective this simple tool can be.

Why Study Theology?

On a scale of 1 to 10, how important would you say each of these texts is? Would you say they have a high level of importance? If you believe any or all of these texts have a high level of importance, how important is it that you and I understand what they mean? If you said, “Very,” you are correct. Now consider the fact that the list above contains a mere six verses out of the entire Word of God. It is just as important to understand the rest of Scripture as it is to understand these six verses. It is, after all, the very Word of God. This is another reason why the study of theology is relevant. It helps us understand Scripture and to think and speak truly about what God has revealed in His Word.

Five Apologetic Topics Every Christian Should Learn About

On more than one occasion, people have asked me what areas should they focus on in their own study of apolgoetics. These are people that want to engage the culture and are burdened for the people God has placed in their lives. In my opinion, while there are many others not mentioned here, there are at least five apologetic areas every Christian should learn about. What I mean is that over the years of talking to hundreds of college students and others as well, these are the continual topics that always come to the surface. So here are some of my picks:

Theology and Science: Converging on Reality - Christian Research Institute

Empiricism is an epistemological theory that knowledge claims must be grounded in experience. If we can’t directly experience something through our five senses, then we shouldn’t believe claims about that thing. No claim is considered respectable unless it has empirical support—unless experimental methods and concrete physical evidence justify the claim. Claims not arrived at via the “scientific method” are either suspect or completely rejected. Hence, concerns about the morality of embryonic stem cells or human cloning are dismissed as religious or ideological interference in the “morally neutral” pursuit of scientific knowledge. Given empiricism, morality becomes mere personal opinion because it is not “scientific” and therefore not a domain of knowledge.

The evidence for Christianity is like a tsunami

I was mad at my father for beating my mother. I was angry at a man who worked on our farm and sexually abused me from ages 6 to 13. Hospitality Is Courageous

In a post-Christian world, God’s people are called to operate not out of fear, but out of courage. And when we live courageously, putting our hope in the reality of who he is and what he has already accomplished, it changes everything. We’re freed up to be the people of God living out the mission of God despite what new and challenging thing comes our way. When we talk about what it means to be courageous and faithful in the age of unbelief, we have to talk about the Great Commission. That’s our mission. And though it’s always been true, I think it’s more true than ever to say that evangelism is going to look like hospitality. You heard me right. As we walk courageously in our cultural climate, evangelism will look like showing hospitality. Don’t hear me say that hospitality is the sum total of courage or evangelism. But don’t miss me saying that living courageously will involve living hospitably. True Biblical Hospitality Hospitality might sound unexciting or initially feel confusing. But when the Bible speaks of hospitality, it almost always ties it to aliens and strangers—people who aren’t like us.

God Wants to Win You from Within

When Jesus bids us, “Follow me,” he doesn’t call us to die to real joy, but to find it. Finally, at long last, the hidden treasure becomes ours (Matthew 13:44). Jesus doesn’t command us to squash true pleasures, but calls us not to be so easily pleased by our trinkets. He appeals to our desire. He made us for himself, heart included, and he seeks to win us from within, and change us from the inside out.

29 The Allure of Sin

Recently, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia. This is a condition where a small opening in the top of my stomach allows acid to get into my abdomen and where part of my stomach pushes up through my diaphragm muscle. It’s just as painful as it sounds. Some people with the condition require surgery, but I have found that I can control the side effects simply by eating healthy. Actually, my diet is beyond healthy—I need to cut out even good-for-you grains and carbohydrates in order to keep from aggravating my condition. The trouble is, all those foods that I must deny myself in order to control my condition are so delicious. There have been more times than I’d like to admit where I’ve indulged in something that I knew beforehand would not be good for me. In those moments, my appetite was met and my taste buds were satisfied. But, just as the food settled in my stomach, the cramps, coughing, and overwhelming sense of nausea returned. It happens almost every time I lack the self-control to say no . There are consequences for my actions. And, if I am not careful, the result could lead to greater health problems, even the possibility of death.

Evidence, Knowledge, and Science: How Does Christianity Measure Up?

It is important to consider what it is that we mean by ‘science’. The English-language word ‘science’ derives from the Latin ‘scientia’ meaning ‘knowledge.’ In its broadest sense, we might see ‘science’ as simply knowledge established through rigorous investigation. Usually, however, we understand ‘science’ in a more narrow sense (e.g. the study of the natural world). Sometimes the notion of science is used in a more methodological sense: knowledge established by repeated experiment. We sometimes hear reference to the ‘scientific method.’ However, perhaps the most common use of ‘science’ is in an institutional sense: all that has been accomplished both in knowledge and technical achievement by the investigators, laboratories, publications, and institutional bodies that are devoted to the study of the natural world and to the applications of the resulting knowledge.

Superior Women

Godly marriage is designed in such a way as to make it impossible for a man to out-give his wife. This is not because he gets to be the selfish one, but rather this is for the same reason an industrious farmer cannot possibly out-give his field. If a man sacrifices himself for his wife, as Christ did for the church, he will find that she is his thirty, sixty, and one-hundred fold. As his glory, she brings out his strengths.

Christians in the Evolutionary Crosshairs | Evolution News

I’m not an Evangelical Christian, nor a Christian of any kind, so I have no personal stake in what Evangelicals believe about evolution. But I do resent seeing thoughtful adults, of any persuasion, patronized as rubes or treated like stubborn and ignorant children. And the fact is that a lot of time, trouble, and money, including tax money, is being poured into an effort that, in the most offensively patronizing way, treats Evangelicals like primitives.

Atheism Is Religion

Of particular concern is question 19, which is the only optional question on the census form. This question is the religious identity question. Several different options are available, including six Christian denominations as well as Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. There is also an “other” category to mark, and then additional information needs to be supplied in a text box. But what makes this question stand out is that “no religion” is the first option to choose from. Now this is absurd, because no one can claim they have no religion! So that option should be totally deleted from the census form.
