Creation reflects the Creator.

At this moment, your liver, kidneys, heart, pancreas, salivary glands, etc., are all working to keep your body going. You don’t even have the power to switch them off and on. As you sleep tonight, your heart will pump seventy-five gallons of blood through your body each hour.

WORLD | ISIS executes 35 Ethiopian Christians | Jamie Dean | April 20, 2015

The Ethiopian government declared three days of mourning after officials confirmed Islamic State militants executed at least 35 Ethiopian Christians held captive in Libya. As with other mass killings, the terrorists on Sunday released a video of the murders.

4 A Millennial Conversation: Five Questions Ive Most Encountered

Christianity certainly needs to do a better job of addressing great questions. Perhaps you have questioned the goodness of God, the hypocrisy of the church, the authority of the Bible, the practices and principles of Christians, and the relevance of faith to life. If so, we have a lot in common. Be assured that your questions are legitimate, shared by others, and important in this healthy conversation. Admittedly, my perspective is biased, but so is every perspective; therefore, introspection and thoughtful engagement are essential.

Grand Central Question: Answering the Critical Concerns of the Major Worldviews

All religions and worldviews seek to answer the fundamental questions of human existence: Why am I here? What does it mean to be human? Why is there evil in the world, and how do we deal with it? But not every worldview places equal emphasis on each issue. The main worldviews each tend to stress a different central question. Read more

Smartphone Addiction and Our Spiritual ADD

There is also a loss of knowledge hierarchies. “It used to be that if I wanted to publish, just the expense of publishing meant that my proposal went through a peer review process. It went through rigorous scrutiny prior to it being released. There are many good things about being able to directly get one’s message out. But the loss of hierarchies is potentially a loss of filtering — a loss of wisdom. It means that knowledge is not a part of a system of apprenticeship, of learning from those who have experience in wisdom, who have been entrusted and authorized. And so there is a way that we have lost that ability to see things in terms of how they relate to trusted authorities.”

Flannery O’Connor and the Violence of Grace

I understand this reaction. It’s what good ‘ole Flannery would have wanted. Shock. But she wanted that shock to lead to understanding. So before helping my students unpack the story, I ask them a question: What must come before grace? I ask because the answer is what every Flannery O’Connor story is about: the moment when characters realize they need grace.

America Is Not the Future of the Church

[T]he church in the U.S. is indeed changing and indeed losing some of its unchallenged dominance over the culture ... and I actually think that might be a good thing. My hope is that it will remind Christians that “success” isn’t measured by money or power or numbers, but rather by the fruit of the spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. Where those characteristics are present, the church lives.

Sean and Josh McDowell on the Impact of Reasonable Faith

For more resources visit: In today’s post-Christian culture, more and more young people are being challenged on the central beliefs Christian have held dear for centuries. Even those raised in the church can fall into a season of doubt. Just listen to well-known speaker and author Sean McDowell, son of renowned apologist Josh McDowell: "I grew up in a home where I learned how to defend Christianity, but hit a point in my life of serious doubts. I was seriously questioning my faith, and relied heavily upon apologetics. I thank God for two professors in particular, William Lane Craig and JP Moreland, whose writings and talks helped me systematically work through my doubts.” Both Sean and Josh know that everyone has a faith story, but not everyone knows the solid reasons upon which their faith rests. Part of the calling of Reasonable Faith is to change that. We’re here to provide intelligent, winsome answers for those who are seeking to find the truth of the Gospel. 4 Things the ‘Hate Psalms’ Teach Us

What if this psalm, and others like it, remind us we are in trouble? Could they help us move toward brokenness before God? Reading this psalm we enter a world quite different from our safe communities where we store up Bible knowledge and hoard the love and friendship of believers. Our anesthetized hearts are laid open so we might experience the desperate condition of the human race and this fallen world. What if singing these psalms could remind us ” what is good and what the Lord requires of us”? What if singing these songs could motivate us to “do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with our God” (Micah 6:8) before a desperate, aching, watching world?

The Compelling Community

At this point  Compelling Community draws us in for a diagnostic on the uniqueness and preciousness of community in our churches. The bottom-line question is simply this: is community in your church a supernatural phenomenon or a merely natural one? As Dever and Dunlop observe, “Single moms gravitate to each other regardless of whether or not the gospel is true. This community is wonderful and helpful—but its existence says nothing about the power of the gospel” (20–21). In other words, most of the ways the experts tell us to “build” community has little to nothing to do with the way God actually creates it.

Sexual Pleasure Isn't Shameful

You may be surprised to find that there is nothing in the Bible that supports the assumption that sexual pleasure is innately dirty, shameful, and sinful. That may be Christian tradition, but it certainly isn’t biblical. God equipped both male and female bodies with the capacity to experience great pleasure through sexual touching and expression. He placed the greatest concentration of nerve endings in both the male and female genitalia. There is nothing inherently wrong with the pleasure that comes from sexual touch.

God's Not Dead: Distant or Bad Fathers May Lead to Atheism

Koster documents that the ranting and ravings of atheists such as Nietzsche, Freud, Huxley, Darwin, Ingersoll, Darrow, Hitler, and others were the consequence of an unhealthy relationship or lack of a relationship with their earthly father--this void fueled their wishful thinking. He goes on to establish that this led to mental illness in many of them, hence the "Atheist Syndrome." He brings this point to our attention with the following: "Materialists and atheists will, of course, be offended if we suggest that their heroes were actually insane, and their attack on God... was a deranged fantasy and not an explanation of scientific knowledge. But ... Darwin, Thomas Huxley, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Sigmund Freud - had many hallmarks of mental illness stamped on their personality. In point of fact, a careful study of their biographies in light of improved scientific knowledge may reveal not only that each man was mentally ill, but that each man suffered the same form of mental illness. It was this mental illness that led each of them to pervert science into an attack on God." Koster goes on to present how atheist Shelley rebelled against God because he was "tormented and beaten in a religiously oriented school.

Innovative Apologetics: A Large List of Bible Verses Relating to The Trinity

Man Up, Campus Christians—Your Timidity Feeds the PC Beast, by David French, National Review

I’m sorry, but I have a real problem — in an era when Christians are getting their heads sawed off in the Middle East — with the idea that, say, an American sociology professor feels to scared to proclaim his real beliefs on a liberal campus. I have a real problem — in an era when young Americans have been dying by the thousands in Afghanistan and Iraq in defense of liberty — with the idea that Americans on campus are too timid to even attempt to exercise those blood-bought freedoms. I have a problem with Christians — despite the example of Christ and the Apostles — who are too fearful to share the reason for their eternal hope. No one’s asking you to be a street preacher or some kind of unthinking loudmouth, but you should be ashamed of your timidity.

Christian Apologists and Church Momentum

A few years ago I attended a church planting conference.  One of the presenters argued that every church needs three things–prayer, money and momentum.  He argued that to maintain momentum, you need something every 6-8 weeks that will sustain a high level of energy.  He stated that in order to keep things rolling, you need a new sermon series, a service project, an event or a special speaker.

I write with a couple of options that could save the university from potential embarrassment, legal and otherwise.

You know the story. A man has been a believer in Christ for decades. To all outward appearances he’s a man of Christian faithfulness and integrity. He has maintained a reputation as a fine example of public and private faithfulness to the things of God for decades. Then, without warning, it all collapses into a sinkhole of sin. Everyone wonders how it could have happened so quickly. In most cases, it soon becomes known that — like most sinkholes — the problem didn’t develop overnight.

In current times, we may associate the term “supernatural” with many different things. In pop culture, the word “supernatural” might evoke thoughts of fairy tales, mythology, science fiction movies, or other stories where the realities that govern our daily existence do not seem to apply. In Christian circles, “supernatural” brings to mind deep spiritual truths about the Christian life. However, we may rarely think about the fact that our own experience of coming to faith has profoundly supernatural origins. In this lecture, Dr. Lawson will explain how Scripture presents the Christian’s new birth as a supernatural event.

Which False Teachings Are Evangelical Christians Most Tempted to Believe In?

Church leaders in the first several centuries pressed for clarity in worship and proclamation of this one person, the incarnate, preexistent Son, Jesus of Nazareth. Heresies (false teachings that tried to relieve the tension of this mystery) abounded. These false teachings prompted the creeds. The Nicene and Apostles’ creeds among others are shorthand presentations of the gospel. They declare the divine lordship of the Father, Son, and Spirit, the unity of Jesus’ human and divine natures, his place in history, and our subsequent place in the triune story.

The Six C’s of Life-Transformative Preaching

There’s a massive difference between being a great communicator and being a great communicator of the gospel. This blog is for fellow preachers because I care about Jesus, his church, reaching the lost, and discipleship. I want to challenge preachers to preach the gospel, not self-help sermons with Jesus “pixie dust” sprinkled on top. This practical, but powerless, preaching produces “pixie dust” disciples.

What Africa Needs More Than Food Aid or Democracy

The biblical gospel tells us that the problem is far worse than the prosperity gospel suggests. Our greatest problem is not that we are broken or sick. Our greatest problem is that the God of the universe is righteous in his holy anger, and he is coming to pour out his divine wrath on all who do not worship him as God. The biblical gospel tells us that the good news is far better than the fact that we will be made healthy and wealthy (even though this will be true of all believers in the new heavens and the new earth). The biblical gospel tells us that we get God as our treasure. We get to worship God as God. He sets us free from all other posers that promised joys they could never provide.

There’s No Such Thing as a Spoiler

I hope you’ll agree that I’m not spoiling anything when I tell you (or perhaps remind you) how the greatest book ever written ends. It ends with a promise, a prayer, and a blessing. There is a promise to remind us that our future is sure, the victory is won, and our bridegroom is coming; a prayer that invites us to look forward with joyful anticipation to the fulfillment of God’s promises; and a blessing that gives us what we need to remain faithful until our hope is fulfilled. Be encouraged by the words of Revelation 22:20-21: “He who testifies to these things says, ‘Surely, I am coming soon.’ Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The grace of the Lord Jesus be with all. Amen.”

Corruption, Poverty Imperil South Africa’s Future

Tragically, the administration of President Zuma is widely perceived to be corrupt. Transparency International gives South Africa weak scores for control of corruption and bribery. Last year, South African police began investigating Zuma for spending $24 million in public funds to upgrade his personal residence, including a swimming pool. He has refused to repay any of those funds. In the court of public opinion, Zuma is virtually a criminal, stacking the government and the courts with his cronies to avoid going to jail.
