2 How Social Ostracism Could Increase Our Love - Stand to Reason Blog

Perhaps social ostracism will be an effective teaching mechanism for conservative Christians with regard to reaching out to the socially maligned and ostracized. Regardless of that possibility, I think it's more certain that, consistent with the import of St. Paul's statement on rejoicing in difficult situations, social ostracism will serve as an effective mechanism for teaching and sharpening skills in engaging in effective ways with secularist and other non-Christians--amounting to a special expression of love that seeks to present Truth regardless of the circumstances. Since we're living in times when many things that were taken for granted no longer have that status, our putting on the "full armor provided by God" is going to prove of the highest importance in our interactions with those who for one reason or another are marching to secular tunes. The numbers of evangelists-in-fact may actually greatly increase.

3 Truthbomb Apologetics: Common Objection #25- "Jesus never said anything about homosexuality."

Finally, it is important to understand that Jesus did not address every single immoral behavior.  He addressed the issues that He was asked about or that came up in conversation.  However, we can be confident about what Jesus would have said if He would have been asked directly about homosexuality because we know He was an observant Jew living under the Old Covenant and was therefore bound by the Mosaic Law.  As speaker and apologist Alan Shlemon notes:

Kids Aren’t the Priority. Marriage Is.

Wow, how I would love to step back into time in my nearly 21 years of marriage and three children later and re-prioritize. My wife and I have fallen so by the wayside in our marital relationship while she has become bonded more with our kids. And if the kids aren't around, she's glued to her cell phone looking at Pintrest or Facebook and not talking to me. Makes for one lonely marriage when only one person is trying to connect and the other person doesn't care to even try.

Steward the Gifts God Has Assigned to You

Now, this exposure of pride in us is actually part of God’s design in the distribution of gifts among his children. As God doles out these unearned gifts among us in unequal measures, it has the gracious effect of drawing pride out into the light from the murky darkness of our deceptive hearts. Every time we compare ourselves to others and either exult in feeling superior or resent feeling inferior to them, God is inviting us to glorify him by repenting of our pride and humbling ourselves under his mighty, wise hand and trusting him to exalt us in the time and way it seems best to him (1 Peter 5:6).

The Integrity of Words and Our Confession of Faith

Sadly, the landscape is littered with theological institutions that have poorly taught and have been poorly led. Theological liberalism has destroyed scores of seminaries, divinity schools, and other institutions for the education of the ministry. Many of these schools are now extinct, even as the churches they served have been evacuated. Others linger on, committed to the mission of revising the Christian faith in order to make peace with the spirit of the age. These schools intentionally and boldly deny the pattern of sound words in order to devise new words for a new age — producing a new faith. As J. Gresham Machen rightly observed almost a century ago, we do not really face two rival versions of Christianity. We face Christianity on the one hand and, on the other hand, some other religion that selectively uses Christian words, but is not Christianity.

The Day Lincoln Was Shot: A Visual FAQ

Because this blog post is already too long! There are so many other fascinating threads and angles to this story. We haven’t even touched on the other assassination attempts on Lincoln’s life (there were at least eight), or Booth’s plan for a simultaneous attack to take out the Union government (Lewis Powell tried but failed to kill Secretary of State William Seward, recuperating in bed from a carriage accident, while George Atzerodt failed to attempt an assassination on Vice President Andrew Johnson), or what happened to Booth’s co-conspirators (they were hanged after a trial), or whether better medical care could have kept Lincoln alive (it is extremely doubtful), or the funeral train that carried Lincoln’s body and the exhumed body of his young son back to Springfield, Illinois, or other “facts” that are likely myths (like Lincoln saying an unusual “goodbye” rather than “good-night” before he left, or that Lincoln had a dream about attending his own funeral, or the idea that Secretary Stanton was behind the assassination, or that Dr.

Don't Be Scared off From Reading the Puritans

Many are scared off from reading the Puritans thinking they are too difficult to read. Others hear the echoes of an overzealous and inaccurate college professor’s lectures on the Puritans or Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter warning them away. I want to encourage you to read the Puritans. Banner of Truth has done a great service through its Puritan Paperbacks series making their works accessible and readable. These works are not too difficult to read, except for the effect they have upon the soul. The lectures of your college professor and Hawthorne’s portrayal are inaccurate, they rob the Puritans of their heart.

Yet on the question of morality, the shift among evangelicals is much smaller. Revival 100 Years After the Armenian Genocide

The Ottoman Empire’s extermination campaign ultimately failed. Today, Armenia is an independent nation about the size of Maryland. The Armenian diaspora now numbers close to 10 million, including some who live in Turkey. The Armenian church lives on in hundreds of congregations worldwide. (In the third century, Armenia was the first nation to accept Christianity as its national faith.) Countless family lines were not extinguished. The Hovsepians—my family—are numbered among them.

The Pastor's Personal Holiness

And every congregation knows this not only about themselves, but about their pastor. They know his weaknesses. They come to recognize his sinful inclinations and sinful habits. This is part of living in community. It is difficult to hide who we are. In fact, we cannot and must not hide who we are. Rather, pastors, declare with your living who you are in Christ. You are a sinner saved by grace. Show how a sinner saved by grace is to live. Seek to mortify the deeds of the flesh (Colossians 3:5)  and live more and more in the graces of Christ (Colossians 3:12ff). Strive to manifest works of righteousness for His glory (Ephesians 2:10). Continually beat the drum of resting and striving by His grace (Matthew 11:28-29; Philippians 2:12). Our people are watching and by God’s grace, they will follow where we lead. Not only by our words, but by our very lives, we are proclaiming Him, “warning everyone and teaching everyone with all wisdom that we might present everyone mature in Christ. For this I (we) toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me (us)” (Colossians 1:28).

Death, Redesigned

Miller had been introduced to Ideo about a year earlier, and quickly achieved a kind of guru status among many at the firm. (“He came in and everyone instantly fell in love with him,” one Ideo staffer told me.) He is 44 and preternaturally poised, the sort of person who, after speaking about death and dying on a public-radio call-in show last year, not only read the comments that poured onto the show’s site later, but responded, compassionately, to each one. In person he is blessed with a blazing magnetism that can’t be overstated — a recent acquaintance described him to me, only half jokingly, as “the most magnificent human in the world” — and could pass easily as a Hollywood leading man, with tousled, slightly silvering dark hair and a dimpled grin. He is also missing half of his left arm and has two prosthetic legs.

Top 10 Apologetics Books

I could hardly ever enjoy or read through an apologetic tome of today. Therefore I think the enjoyment and convincing power of any work depends on the subjective audience not only the information and also on style and presentation. I for one do not find Ravi Zacharias especially convincing or effective personally and it is not because I do not understand him. I do not wish to single Mr. Zacharias out as I can hardly stand to read Peter Kreeft or Josh McDowell. I understand that they are widely recognized and acclaimed and it must be for a reason but as a result of my own experience with modern apologetics I think there is still a large field of opportunity to be harvested by different approaches and styles. I dont think most modern apologist’s really get to the heart of the issues and by that I mean the subjective side of things in the intended audiences. One writer who helped me a decade ago or more was NT Wright. I know he is not considered an apologist strictly speaking or perhaps he is but the ambiguity in defining him is because of his style and the focus of his writings. I point to him as one example because what we are up against today is a mindset and set of attitudes more than anything based on knowledge and information and this mindset and attitudes are not effectively dealt with by the approach and assumptions many Christian apologists take today.

The Best Worship Music You Won't Hear on Christian Radio

Vice’s There’s a Light is a breath of fresh gospel air. If Grammy-winning artist Israel Houghton fuses gospel with Michael Jackson pop and worship arena rock, then Vice lands on the other side of the gospel coin. She fuses 1970s funk and soul with indie rock layerings, and tops it off with a smoky—even gritty at times—vocal performance. Imagine if Al Green and Adele got together to sing about Jesus. Some of that smoke and grit is baked into the album, which throws out the clean compression techniques of digital recording for analog tape. The result is warm, slightly distorted vocal tracks over the bass-heavy signature sound of 1960s and ’70s R&B.

The "Dependency" Argument for Abortion: A Dilemma

Perhaps one might try to answer the dilemma by embracing the second horn of the dilemma and suggesting that once the dependency situation is removed, then the right to abort is also removed. However, the same type of dependency which the unborn is in with the mother has simply been transferred to an artificial womb. Perhaps, however, one cannot be relevantly (morally) dependent upon a machine. But this is to effectively beg the question, for the very grounds of the pro-choice argument is that it is dependency which creates a state of permissive abortion. Perhaps they could modify their stance and say that it is actually dependency upon the mother alone. But here is where the danger of an “ad hoc” stance rears its ugly head, because the relevant criterion–dependency–is maintained while it is the location of the unborn which has shifted. If dependency is alleged to be enough to ground abortion rights, then smuggling in additional premises alongside dependency defeats the initial argument.

Book Review: "Total Church" by Tim Chester and Steve Timmis

I think this is a deeply misguided attempt to describe a “Christian” view of counseling which simply is–ironically–not outlined in the Bible. Choosing a couple quotes about how our present suffering can be alleviated or overcome by God does not mean that going to “secular” [whatever that means–and in exclusion of the reality of Christian] psychologists and therapists is a poor decision. Yes, we should try to deal with and help with these issues in the context of a community of faith. But God forbid that we approach someone who self-harms [one example they used] and just tell them that their problem is reducible to a spiritual problem, as the authors do: “The term ‘spiritual’ is not simply another category alongside biological, physical, environmental, upbringing, or relationships. Each of those forms of suffering, passive or active, is always and at some point a spiritual and theological issue” (1881). This seems clearly reductionistic and potentially damaging. I felt this whole section was quite disturbing.

EVENT | Grill the Christian with David Wood of Acts 17 Apologetics

Grill the Christian with David Wood Got questions? Join us for GOT-Haymarket at the Lion & Bull bar on Sunday, April 19 @ 7:30pm to ask anything of our guest speaker, David Wood of Acts 17 Apologetics . David is a well-known Christian apologist and he will be putting himself in the line of fire to take questions from a moderator and from the audience. No question is off limits. Can we trust the Bible? Did Jesus really exist? Is there evidence for God? Is there evidence for the Resurrection of Jesus? How could a loving God allow evil and suffering in the world? Why would anyone want to associate with a religion of hypocrites? Go here for more info about the event. Everyone is welcome; skeptics and believers. Note: This special GOT event will be a precursor to a highly anticipated debate between David and an ex-Christian now atheist apologist and author, John Loftus, on the subject of the resurrection of Jesus Christ as recorded in the Bible and other ancient documents. The debate will be hosted by the local apologetics ministry, Faith & Reasoning, on Monday, April 20 at Reston Bible Church.

Renewing Your Mind | Mary's Visit to Elizabeth | April 18, 2015

Beloved for the way in which it highlights Jesus' care for those on the margins of society and for its care in telling the story of our Savior's life and ministry, the gospel of Luke has always been treasured by the Christian church. Dr. Sproul's expositional study of this inspired account of Jesus looks at the significant events of His life and His teachings while unfolding the meaning of both for us today.

Does peer-reviewed science support Bill Nye's attempt to prove materialism is true?

So, not only does the Miller-Urey experiment not reproduce conditions on the early earth, and not only do you still have the problem of getting a long enough amino acid chain to form spontaneously without breaking down, and not only do you have to put the right sequence of amino acids together to form a protein with an actual function, but while you’re putting this amino acid chain together, you also have to somehow pick only the left-handed amino acids out of a racemic mixture. And even if you get all that (which is pretty much impossible all by itself), that still only gets you one protein. You need much more than that to make a living cell.

WORLD | Diamonds in the Shadowlands | Marvin Olasky | April 18, 2015

On April 29, 1967, I hung on through an extra-inning game where the temperature dipped below freezing. The Kansas City A’s scored a run in the top of the 15th but the Red Sox scored two in the bottom to win the game, 11-10. A meaningless game between seventh and ninth place finishers the year before who weren’t expected to do better in the new season? So it seemed, but the Red Sox soared that year and ended up winning the American League pennant on Oct. 1—by one game. (They lost the World Series, of course, four games to three.)

Christian Apologetics: Past & Present

Since its start, the Christian church has needed and used apologetics. The New Testament is full of apologetic language, aside from the standard 1 Peter 3:15. Throughout its history, the church has had many noble defenders, the fruit of whose labours remains noteworthy for twenty-first century debates. While apologetic literature is not lacking, a reader of key texts is. This lacuna is now half-filled with the publication of the first volume of Christian Apologetics: Past & Present . The editors are both professors of apologetics at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, a school notable for its apologetics emphasis.

True Beliefs and The Truman Show | Come Reason's Apologetics Notes

The concept of belief has been twisted and distorted to mean something different than what had been traditionally understood. Belief is simply what one holds to be real, what one takes as true. It is just as proper to say that I believe my favorite team will win the championship as it is to say I believe the sun will rise tomorrow. I may have different kinds of evidence for claim number two than claim number one, and I may have a different level of certainty for each, but if I hold each proposition as true, then each forms a belief. The common perception today is when one references beliefs that relate to certain metaphysical claims like the existence of God or the foundation of morality, belief is nothing more than a preference. Such views are mistaken. Because one's view of reality is different, one's beliefs are different, and that matters quite a bit. But how can we as Christians communicate the importance of holding true beliefs? Getting someone who holds a different view to understand just what Christians mean when they say belief in God is objectively true or that right and wrong really make a difference can be frustrating.

Lawmakers Vote Against Making the Bible the ‘Official Book’ of Tennessee

Along with legal concerns, opponents of the measure said that making the Bible an official state symbol, trivialized it by putting scripture along with objects like the official state amphibian (the Tennessee cave salamander), the official state horse (the Tennessee walking horse) and the official state folk dance (the square dance). Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris, who helped defeat the measure told The Tennessean, "All I know is that I hear Satan snickering. He loves this kind of mischief. You just dumb the good book down far enough to make it whatever it takes to make it a state symbol, and you're on your way to where he wants you” ...
