Psalm 1:3: Plant Yourself in God’s Word

Many do not blossom with the beauty of Christlikeness because they are not rooted in the word of God.

Why does atheist historian Gerd Ludemann accept the post-mortem experiences of the risen Jesus?

William Lane Craig explains why even atheist historians like Gerd Ludemann accept that the earliest followers of Jesus had experiences in which Jesus appeared to them as resurrected Lord. Excerpt: …

No Ocean Big Enough: The Beauty of God in the World He Made

Is Christianity at War with Science?

…(at most) that we behave in certain ways—in such ways as to promote survival, or more exactly reproductive success. The principal function or purpose, then, of our cognitive faculties is not that of producing true or verisimilitudinous (nearly true) beliefs, but instead that of contributing to survival by getting the body parts in the right place. What evolution underwrites is only (at most) that our behavior is reasonably adaptive to the circumstances in which our ancestors found themselves; hence it does not guarantee mostly true or verisimilitudinous beliefs. Our beliefs might be mostly true or verisimilitudinous; but there is no particular reason to think they would be: natural selection is interested, not in truth, but in appropriate behavior.

Seminaries Don’t Make Pastors. Churches Do.

Editors’ note : This article was adapted from a new book published by Crossway under the TGC imprint, 15 Things Seminary Couldn’t Teach Me , edited by Collin Hansen and Jeff Robinson.  Order your copy today. Previously: 3 Lessons I Learned the Hard Way as a Pastor (Jeff Robinson) You might think a seminary president would be the last person to contribute to a book on what a seminary didn’t provide for pastors. Actually, I welcome the opportunity. I have committed my life to the education of pastors through The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and after nearly 25 years of leading it, I am more convinced than ever of the value of a seminary education. But seminaries do not call pastors. God does. And seminaries do not make pastors. Churches do. Keeping that straight is important. A good seminary can add immeasurably to a pastor’s ministry, and the rigorous study involved in a quality seminary education should be expected of any preacher of the Word of God. The theological disciplines are of crucial importance, and though a faithful pastor will be more than a scholar, the church learned long ago the necessity of a learned ministry.

Has increased education spending in schools improved student performance in test scores?

One of my friends has been having a debate with one of his former teachers about whether spending more money on government-run education improves tests scores. He tried posting some evidence, but she just dismissed that by claiming:

How Atheist Hate & Mockery Led a Richard Dawkins Fan, Richard Morgan, to Faith

Richard Morgan was born in a tiny village in North Wales. He went to college in Nottingham, and lived and taught, as a music teacher, in Nottingham and Manchester. He then moved to Toulouse, France in 1984. There he became an English teacher. What is striking about his conversion story is how he was converted to Christianity on Richard Dawkins’ website, a place where one wouldn’t expect to find such conversions (1).

The Stories We Tell

New information can alter your story as well. Imagine that you discover, in the attic of your childhood home, adoption papers with your name on them. That would be no small or insignificant discovery. That new information would change how you view your childhood, your current identity, and possibly your future. But now, imagine that you’re in the kitchen of a good friend after a cookout. You’re raving about the hamburgers only to look down in the trash can and spot the empty packaging for ground turkey, not, as you suspected, ground beef. That new information might change your assessment of the dinner (and maybe the cook), but it won’t make any significant alterations to how you tell your life story. The principle at work here is that new information has the potential to change our story—how we understand our life and the world around us—based on the importance of that information. Given this truth, we now have a grid through which to consider the gospel of Jesus Christ in all its story-changing power.

Do You Need A Great Testimony for God to Use You?

When people ask me to share my testimony, I often share my season of doubt. As a late teen, I told my dad I wanted to know truth, but that I wasn’t sure I believed Christianity was true. Ironically, now that I am an apologist for the faith, I find that my story is an encouragement to other people—and especially to young people who struggle with their faith (and to their parents). And so, I share it when I can. But I am also careful not to overdramatize it since it is merely one part of my journey.

What is the Most Recent Manuscript Count for the New Testament?

Since we do not have the original New Testament writings (the autographa ), textual critics aim to determine the reliability of existing copies. For any particular work or collection of works, the greater the number and the earlier the dating of the manuscripts, the easier it is to reconstruct a text closer to the original and identify errors or discrepancies.

10 Biblical Reasons Jesus Is God

This is important to understand because many objectors to the deity of Jesus misunderstand what Christians believe about the Trinity. Christians believe what the Bible teaches—that there is only one true and living God (Deuteronomy 6:4; cf. 1 Corinthians 8:6). However, we must not confuse monotheism (belief in one God) with Unitarianism (the belief that the being of God is shared by one person). Jesus’ divinity is part of the doctrine of the Trinity, which states that within the one Being that is God, there exists eternally three co-equal and co-eternal persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Each is a distinct person, yet each is identified as God: the Father (1 Corinthians 8:6), the Son (John 1:1–3; Romans 9:5), and the Spirit (Acts 5:3–4). We must also remember that it wasn’t the Father or the Spirit who became incarnate; it was the Son (John 1:14) and he was born under the Law (Galatians 4:4). This is why, in his humanity, Jesus prays to the Father (Matthew 26:39, 42). 5

Historical Bias, Objectivity, and the Truth of Christianity

Bias is probably the most popular objection to knowing history. It is claimed by some that historians are biased. It is not always clear what the objection is really getting at, but usually it is something like the historian holds certain views that in some way make his reporting subjective or unfair. For example, an historian may be writing about a religious issue and if he is part of that religion he is likely going to be accused of being biased. The disciples are often said to be biased regarding the events of the life of Jesus, particularly his resurrection. Since they knew him and had a vested interest they must have made up the claims of the resurrection.

13 Important Questions for the Christian Science Worldview | Cold Case Christianity

So, Could This Be True? Every worldview has to be both internally and externally consistent. The challenge for Christian Science appears to exist at both levels. There are a number of philosophical questions (and Biblical Questions for that matter) exposing the internal contradictions of the worldview. In addition, it would be difficult (if not impossible) to measure whether or not Christian Science is externally consistent if we can’t trust our observations in the material world in the first place. For these reasons, the Church of Christ, Scientist (Christian Science) worldview does not pass the test of internal and external examination.

Help Defend the Ministerial Housing Allowance

If this ruling is not overturned, it will affect hundreds of thousands of pastors and churches around the U.S. that rely on this vital tax exemption. Some pastors, in areas where housing costs are already prohibitive, may have to take a second job, send their spouse to work, or leave the ministry altogether. We must help the court recognize the overwhelming number of ministers and families across the U.S. who will be impacted by its decision.

Peter and Rosemary Grant, the husband and wife pair from Princeton University, have spent 40 years studying four species of ground finch on one uninhabited island of the Galápagos archipelago. Real People and Real Places: The Biblical Archaeological Approach

Archaeology cannot prove or disprove a historical book. However, the science of this field can provide the evidence necessary for a person to determine if having faith in a particular scripture (i.e. in this case, the Bible, the Book of Mormon) is reasonable. When everything is considered, there is good reason to believe the Bible accurately portrays history. Through the purchase of nominal investments (i.e. biblcial scrolls, coins, pottery, etc), the Christian can provide a way for the Mormon to not only see but also touch real items of history. Nothing like this can be obtained to support the Book of Mormon since the places where this scripture’s events took place are debated. Using this approach to get a Mormon to rethink his or her presuppositions is a successful approach that can be used by anyone to share the Gospel with Mormons!

The Necessity of God's Existence: Ontological Arguments Worth Considering

One of the more difficult of the apologetics arguments to understand is that known as the ontological argument. The ontological argument finds root in Anselm of Canterbury’s famed declaration, “ God is that, than which noting greater can be conceived.”[1] This is the say, God is the greatest of all possible beings. God, properly understood, is maximally great. Nothing could be greater than God. Thus, Anselm argues that if it is possible to conceive of the greatest possible beings, then that greatest possible being must exist. There is much to unpack in this argument. However, I would like to focus on arguments that provide reasons to believe that God is a necessary being.

Skeptics Can’t Have It Both Ways

And the ‘can’t have it both ways argument’ is a problem for apologists too – if there is no free will conflict with God killing children and babies for crimes they would go on to commit, then why NOT stop Hitler at birth? Why would a fire be needed to kill baby Hitler? God could have simply prevented Hitler being born in the first place. His mother had miscarried several times before Adolf arrived, so it’s not like God had an issue with killing off members of that family.

Make It Easy for Your Kids to Love God: Proverbs for a Happy Home

But that is not a warning against God’s gift of human sexuality; it is a warning against the foolish violation of God’s gift. Some parents seem so afraid their children might sin, they smother their home with excessive caution. They give their kids the impression that our created reality is somehow beneath God’s approval. These über-conscientious parents sincerely love their kids, but they harm their kids with a narrow-minded denial of God’s life-affirming goodness. And they inadvertently position their kids for hypocrisy later in life. John Buchan, the Scottish author, wrote, “If you tell a man that honest pleasure is a sin in God’s sight, he finds a way to get the pleasure and yet keep the name for godliness. And, mind you, the pleasures he enjoys with a doubtful conscience will not long remain honest.”

How Freedom Became an American Idol

Any view of government that does not place government under a higher authority makes government absolute. This is what liberalism has done. The original liberal theorists might have offered nice-sounding toasts to the laws of the Almighty. (Consider the Declaration of Independence, with its invocation of “Nature’s God” and inalienable rights endowed by our “Creator”). But they didn’t actually write God into the social contract. The contract is for believers and unbelievers alike. It stipulates that our obligation to obey government doesn’t come from God (how could you require that of an unbeliever?). It comes from our own consent.

The Major Reason Christians Doubt

Although there are other reasons, the major reason Christians doubt God’s love or even the truth of Christianity is that they expect God to act in ways other than He promised to act. I write this now because recently I have conversed with Christians who are struggling with this. Obviously, if a Christian thinks the Lord should do this or that, but then the Lord doesn’t do this or that, then that Christian is going to lack confidence in God’s love or existence.

Why I left the Word-Faith Movement

When I was about fourteen I started listening to teachers such as Kenneth Copeland, Jesse Duplantis, Jerry Savelle, and Creflo Dollar. I had grown up going to church, albeit a very liberal church, but these guys were different than what I was used to. They had passion, zeal, and spoke with power and authority. They taught very differently than what I had heard before, but they used Scripture to back everything up (well, and some direct revelation from God, so they said). They taught that Jesus had secured our physical healing for this life, that we had power over sickness and the devil, that we could transform our finances through our faith, and that we could even use faith the way God does—the God kind of faith. I really enjoyed listening to these teachers, particularly Copeland and Duplantis. I even was able to meet Duplantis and his wife at a meeting in Charlotte, where I gave him a letter thanking him for teaching the truth. Little did I know at the time that I was being sucked into a heretical mess. Since I did not know much at the time about orthodox theology, much of what was said sounded biblical and right.
