The Wrong Way to Approach the Poor

Chase, this is so brilliant, one of the best things i have read on poverty in a while, thank you for this. We have a blog called Two Cents where we connect to articles or write pieces on where FAITH and FINANCES intersect and so often our pieces relate to the poor [if you'd ever like to write a piece drop me a line - ] but two that stand out which resonate with this post are:

Violence Breaks Out At T4G As Rival Theology Gangs Clash | The Babylon Bee

LOUISVILLE, KY—For the third time in as many gatherings, the Together for the Gospel Conference was marred by an outbreak of turbulence as tensions rose over differing hermeneutic approaches to Scripture. “The dispensationalists feel like they’ve been given short shrift again,” said Dr. John Dawsen, as a Crossway pen whizzed by his ear. “Combine the grammatical-historical and redemptive-historical feud and inter-complementarian squabbles, and you have a recipe for contention.”

Steward the Gifts God Has Assigned to You

Therefore, we are stewards of the gifts God has entrusted to us. And he has entrusted them to us primarily for the benefit of others (1 Peter 4:10; Romans 12:4–6). Our gifts are not intended to be platforms where we try to gain our sense of significance from the esteem of men. Our real significance comes from God choosing us in Christ, gifting us, and deploying us in his kingdom for his purposes. There is more significance there than we can fully comprehend and appreciate. The praise of men is usually vicarious fluff.

We invite you to the conference for women, but not all about women. It's a gathering of women around the Word of God. To this third TGC Women's Conference, we come joyfully but soberly, knowing that suffering meets us at every hand, right at home and all across the globe. What better book for us in 2016 than 1 Peter—packed with gospel perspective on our short lives. It's a little epistle, but it gives us a big view of who we are in Christ and how we are to live as redeemed sojourners in this world. How do we stand firm in God's true grace? How do we offer a strong shining witness to Jesus Christ even in the midst of fiery trials? Peter points us insistently to the Lord Jesus, to his suffering on our behalf, and to the resurrection life he makes possible for those who believe in him. At TGCW16 we won't be getting away from real life; we will be seeing it clearly, in light of gospel help and hope. By God's grace, we will go away better prepared to live and share resurrection life, in a world of suffering.

There's a Deeper Reason for Adam LaRoche's Sudden Retirement From Baseball

ESPN senior writer Tim Keown, in his profile of LaRoche describes it this way: “Adam LaRoche was now a conduit for opinions on education and money and privilege and kids in the workplace. Hashtags reigned. He was either an idiot or a saint.” Keown goes on to offer a reason for LaRoche's retirement that's much deeper than the spoiled athlete bit. Back in November, LaRoche took a trip to the red-light districts of Southeast Asia, where he worked with Exodus Road, a nonprofit that combats underage sex-slavery. There, LaRoche and fellow-pro Blaine Boyer "conducted surveillance in brothels and tried to determine the age of the girls—known only by numbers pinned to bikinis—and identify their bosses,” says the ESPN profile.

When You Don’t Want to Go to Church

Sin and suffering can make us want to run and hide from God, like Adam and Eve. And they eventually hid from one another, too. Can we not relate? What makes us think we have to have it together to come to church? What would the church look like if we lost our self-focus and fully gazed on Christ? The bread, his body, the cup, his blood, shared by faith in the presence of other wounded believers is a portrait of redemption, which makes everything sad come untrue. As Christ’s suffering unites us to him, it also binds us to one another. True healing, whatever your scars, isn’t accomplished in isolation. And whatever your scars, they are temporary pains.

Come, Lord Jesus

“Amen. Come, Lord Jesus .” All believers ought to remember that the church’s final hope is a person. It is neither a political party nor is it a pragmatic paradigm. It is not a popular program. It’s a person. And what a person he is.

Your Hospital Visit Is Coming

I was only seventeen years old, or maybe eighteen, but that moment defined how I would engage life in a hospital. My stay would not be a jail sentence. Come hell or high water, I determined that this hospital would be, well, a gymnasium for my soul, a proving ground for my faith, and a mission field for God.

The Festival of Thought

Could Doing What You 'Should' Be Hurting You?

At any moment on any given day, there is an endless list of things I should be doing. I should eat right. I should exercise. I should spend time in prayer. I should read my Bible. I should be more productive. I should be more generous. I should be more disciplined. I should read that book. I should pursue that thing I’ve always talked about. I should get together with so-and-so. I should be a better husband, dad, friend, neighbor, employee.

Society Has Become Super Unhealthy. The Church Needs to Help

Slowly and inadvertently, we’ve let the tension of body and spirit become imbalanced. The numbers indicate that we are making more and more unhealthy choices, that not only take a physical toll on our bodies, but can also lead us to forget about an important spiritual principle: Discipline over “the flesh” is linked to spiritual growth.

The Mind Serves the Heart

What does it mean to love Jesus? And if you don’t love him, what can you do to feel differently? God gives us knowledge about himself to help us develop deep passion for him. John Piper speaks to the importance of emotions in the Christian life, and how to cultivate right feelings for God.

Christian Apologetics - What Is Christian Apologetics?

Christian apologetics represents the serious and sustained engagement with ‘ultimate questions’ raised by a culture, people group, or individual aiming to show how the Christian faith is able to provide meaningful answers to such questions. Where is God in the suffering of the world? Is faith in God reasonable? Apologetics clears the ground for evangelism, just as John the Baptist prepared the way for the coming of Jesus of Nazareth. …Evangelism…issues a personal invitation: ‘You are invited to the feast! Please come!’ Apologetics lays the ground for this invitation; evangelism extends it. Both are an essential part of the mission of the church

Unhinged: Senator Boxer ridicules 'philosopher', assails Catholic priest at Senate climate hearing

Irritated by the testimony from the author of 'A Moral Case for Fossil Fuels', Alex Epstein, democrat Senator Barbara Boxer asks, "Are you a scientist?" Epstein responds, "No. Philosopher... To teach you how to think more clearly." Boxer: "Well, you don't have to teach me how to think more clearly... I'm telling you that all you have to know is you're a philosopher and not a scientist, and I don't appreciate getting lectured by a philosopher about science." Boxer then turns to Father Robert Sirico, "You're saying that when the planet is facing all these problems, it's not a moral issue." Father Sirico replies, "I never said that. Where did I say that? Could you give me that quotation, Senator?" Unable to provide the quote, Boxer says, "I think you need to have a talk with Reverend Nelson," the Presbyterian USA minister sitting two chairs down. Father Sirico gets in the last word, "Who is by the way, not a scientist." The Church and Apologetics for Youth | The Stream

Since I am a social scientist it is natural for me to assess the results of this past conference. I am currently analyzing surveys we collected from attendees there. Afterward I will meet with leadership at my church to decide what we will do next. However, I will be happy to share the results of my evaluation. It should not be limited to my own home church. Any Christian who is interested in the possibility of doing a local youth apologetics conference is free to contact me and I will share what I know.

A Lesson in Failed Apologetics

Paul targeted his audiences with precision based on his desire to “become all things to all people” (2 Cor. 9:22).By all appearances, he was a superb orator, able to “hit the message home” with diverse audiences. As he preached in the synagogues he found commonality with the Jews, for he was a Jew himself (and not just any Jew, but a zealously devout one; Phil. 3:4-6), but a significant part of his evangelistic pursuits extended to the Gentiles (Gal. 1:16; 2:9; Eph. 3:8; Col. 1:27). He was certainly the “wild card” of the early church (Acts 9:15).

35 Discrimination Is Legitimate When the Distinction Is Relevant

When differences are relevant, it's not an invalid systemic discrimination. For example, if two guys walk into a bar and the bartender says, “I can't serve people like you—get out!” Is that wrong? Illegal? One can’t say until one knows why the discrimination is occurring. If the bartender is saying “get out” because the guy isn’t white, then that’s invalid. Why? Because a person’s race is completely irrelevant to the issue of drinking at a bar. But what if he says “get out” because the guy is only fifteen? In that case, the age is relevant because drinking affects youth differently, they don't have the developmental ability to handle the impairment, etc. Yes, we systemically discriminate against fifteen-year-olds by law because of differences between them and adults, but it’s not invalid to do so.

A Husband’s Manual for Marriage

By beholding the glory of Christ we become like Christ. That’s the key to overcoming the impossibility of a husband’s calling. As the Spirit gives us eyes to see the multifaceted glory of Christ through the Word, we are changed into that image. The manual of how to love your wife as Christ loved the church is Christ himself. He is the greatest marriage manual ever. Do not be stubborn and try to put this marriage together on your own. Behold the stunning glory of Christ’s love for the church and, in beholding, you will become like your Savior.

2 Years After the ‘Bring Back Our Girls’ Kidnapping a New Video of Victims Emerges

Today CNN obtained a new video showing at least 15 girls kidnapped from Chibok. The “proof of life” video is thought to be part of a tactic used in negotiations with government officials, who have recently made major offensive military strides in fighting the group. Though nearly 11,000 people have been rescued from Boko Haram in recent months, many of the Chibok girls are still missing. Some were thought to have been forced into sex slavery or marriage. Some kidnapping victims have even been used as suicide bombers .

You really saved my life (indirectly) so thank you so much!!!

I’m 17 years old and I’m trying to move on from my depression, though your book really helped me to do so.

Your circumstances may be out of your control, but God is in control of everything. Your thoughts shape who you are, but you can change the way you think. Your circumstances and consciousness have shaped who you are, but the way you respond to your circumstances and the thoughts you choose to believe will shape the rest of your life.

Atheists Say Darwinism Means Life is Meaningless (But Their Behavior Shows They Know Better)

In a YouTube video the University of Chicago evolutionary biologist Jerry Coyne said science has shown that “the universe and life are pointless … in the sense that there is no externally imposed purpose or point in the universe. As atheists this is something that is manifestly true to us. We make our own meaning and purpose.”

Apologetics: vital to young people serious about evangelism

Each of us has been given the assignment of not only presenting the gospel but also explaining and defending the truths of our message to the world around us. There is plenty of evidence to support what we believe. The Bible reminds us that the good news about Jesus is not just based on human opinion or someone’s personal preference. Christianity is truth, not mere fables or myths (

Three Intractable Problems for Atheism

Is science doing real work while people who posit a creator are being intellectually lazy? That's what atheists like Richard Dawkins would have you believe. In an interview with the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Connecticut, Dawkins claimed pointing to an intelligent designer is "a cowardly evasion, it's lazy. What we should be doing as scientists is rolling up our sleeves and saying, right, Darwin solved the big problem. Now let's take that as encouragement to solve the other big problems, like the origin of life and the origin of the cosmos."1
