Why Christians Should Support Earth Day

“The earth is the LORD’s and everything in it” (Ps. 24:1). Just as saying the Pledge of Allegiance does not signify submission to the United States above Christ, participating in Earth Day activities does not require Earth worship or theological compromise. Even if bad theology is being proclaimed and practiced at an event, our mere attendance does not constitute affirmation. Instead, participating with our community in Earth Day activities allows for positively demonstrating our theological valuation of creation. The earth is our home; God is doing a work to restore it through Christ’s resurrection.

There are any number of ways to capture the glory of Eden. Because it is a garden paradise, we can focus on its bucolic nature. Bereft of thorns and thistles, fruitful and beautiful, it is the ideal location, designed for man and for glory. We can zero in on the peace that reigned there, the absence of death and illness, lions lying down with lambs. We can wonder at the glory of the rivers, the gold, and the precious stones. The crescendo of God’s description, however, isn’t at any of these points. Instead, Genesis 2, just before the serpent is introduced in Genesis 3:1, ends with this paean to the blessed glory of the garden: “And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed” (v. 25).

Four Key Principles for Apologetics

“But you introduced yourself as an ‘agnostic,’ ” I said gently. “What happened?” Alex explained he attended a local atheist group, and discovered that they were, in his words, “fundamentalists too.” Questioning was not allowed there either. Alex told me he didn’t know what to believe or disbelieve any more. Then, he asked me if I thought he was lazy. I replied, “There are two types of agnostics. A lazy agnostic is somebody who can’t be bothered to find the answer to the God question. An active agnostic is genuinely searching for the answer, but just hasn’t found it yet.” We talked long into the evening and slowly began to deal with some of the questions Alex had buried for so long.

How Rachel Held Evans became the most polarizing woman in evangelicalism

From her self-made pulpit, Evans has openly wrestled with faith and evolution, where women fit in church leadership and who will end up in hell. With no formal seminary training or institutional backing, she has challenged traditional evangelical biblical interpretation on the place of LGBT people in the church, advocating for allowing them to join and even become leaders, especially contentious topics in evangelical circles.

This is How Religious Liberty Dies — The New Rules of the Secular Left

The vast high-velocity moral revolution that is reshaping modern cultures at warp speed is leaving almost no aspect of the culture untouched and untransformed. The advocates of same-sex marriage and the more comprehensive goals of the LGBT movement assured the nation that nothing would be fundamentally changed if people of the same gender were allowed to marry one another. We knew that could not be true, and now the entire nation knows.

'A.D. The Bible Continues': Peril, Cruelty, and Violence

Moments like these make you wish that the series would "breathe" a little more, instead of trying to fill as many moments as possible with scenes of peril, cruelty, and violence. There'll be more than enough of that to wade through in the chapters of Acts to come.

“So I find it to be a law that when I want to do right, evil lies close at hand. For I delight in the law of God, in my inner being, but I see in my members another law waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that dwells in my members. Wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?” (Romans 7:21-24, ESV)

Hillary Praises Common Core, Calls Education A 'Non-Family Enterprise'

Clinton initially responded to the question about how to fix the U.S. educational system by praising Common Core. She then said that families today are too “negative” about the current system, a system Clinton described as “the most important non-family enterprise” in the country. After noting what she described as “unfortunate” opposition to Common Core, Hillary Clinton also blithely dismissed the concerns of Common Core opponents by saying they just “do not understand the value” of the controversial top-down curriculum:

What's Really Holding Us Back from Giving

Most of us like having a certain amount of money in our bank account, and it's easy to freak out a little if it dips below a certain point. Letting go is hard, really hard. Because letting go of control actually forces us to do what we say we believe—to walk out our faith and trust that God actually is good, loving, kind and certainly wiser and more qualified to make decisions then you or me. Or, as Proverbs puts it, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding" (Proverbs 3:5).

God's Not Dead: Science Discovers Truths the Bible Revealed Long Ago: God is the Foundation for Science

Rational pre-commitments assist in directing one’s investigation and analysis of the data (as well as its interpretation and communication). This admission is often difficult to get from some atheistic inquirers to acknowledge. What worldview can furnish the a priori necessities and rational tools for science, analysis and research? Christian theism can deliver the epistemic ground for the a priori immutable universals utilized in rational enquiry; in principle, materialistic atheism cannot furnish the aforementioned ground. What is obligatory to account for scientific analysis is a first principle that has the ontological endowment to not only ground it, but to account for it and its preconditions—all the universal operational features of knowledge. The loss of the immovable point of reference, in principle, leaves the ungodly bereft of a resource necessary to construct the analytical enterprise. Without God, one cannot hoist the necessary a priori operation features of the intellectual examination of evidence. The Christian worldview supplies the fixed ontic platform as the sufficient truth condition that can justify induction, immutable universals, attributes, identity, and the uniformity of the physical world.

Delighting in Death?

L ast week I delivered a guest lecture at a Christian liberal arts college entitled “ Each Day Dies With Sleep : Literary and Theological Reflections upon Mortality.” As I thought through the topic over the previous weeks, two superficially disparate questions puzzled me. Why is it that the people most vocally committed to causes connected to death (abortion, assisted suicide, euthanasia) are often the same who are committed to progressive sexual causes? And why do abortion advocates frequently see it not as a necessary evil but as a positive good? As to the first question, that the same people often, though not always, hold this cluster of views would suggest that there is something which connects them at a deep level, despite the fact the areas of sexual politics and the ethics of death might not appear to be necessarily related. As to the second, I am pro-life and see abortion as heinous and a source of national shame, but I can understand the internal logic of the pro-abortion case, even while having no sympathy for it. What I cannot understand, however, is the way so many see abortion as a badge of honor and a source of pride and joy.

Innovative Apologetics: Why You Should Believe in God and Reject Atheism part I

Complex cognition shaped the Stone Age hand axe

The ability to make a Lower Paleolithic hand axe depends on complex cognitive control by the prefrontal cortex, including the 'central executive' function of working memory, a new study finds. The results knock another chip off theories that Stone Age hand axes are simple tools that don't involve higher-order executive function of the brain.

AI Machines: Things Not Persons

The approach here rests in a leveling maneuver. If the brain is a really machine, then any thinking machine deserves the same rights that a working brain possesses. But the human brain—and, more importantly, the mind—is much more than a complex organic computer. As the Stanford physician and bioethicist William Hurlbut told me, “Human consciousness is not mere computation. It is grounded in our full embodiment and intimately engaged with the neural apparatus associated with feeling and action.” In other words, human thought arises from a complex interaction of reason, emotion, abstract analysis, experience, memories, education, unconscious motivation, body chemistry, and so on. That can never be true of AI robots. Even if an AI machine were to attain unlimited processing capacities, it wouldn’t be sentient, just hyper-calculating.

Christian Groups Respond to LGBT-Themed Public Schools 'Day of Silence' With Christ-Centered 'Day of Dialogue'

Various conservative groups are offering diverse responses to the LGBT-themed public schools event on Friday known as the "Day of Silence," by either urging parents to keep their children home from school or by participating in the "Day of Dialogue" that encourages Christian students to share biblical views on sexual ethics.

One Last Thing: The Christian Porn Secret

The authors have a gift for creating realistic characters and putting them into morally complex and troubling situations. They don’t get preachy, but they do handle the issues raised in a specifically Christian way. I doubt any contemporary secular novel would portray pornography as a moral evil in the way that this one does. The novel’s Christian underpinning gives the characters room to feel horror, disgust, and heartbreak about porn—all the emotions that our sex-obsessed society, in my experience, urges us not to feel about explicit depictions of sex.

How Hurt Pastors Hurt People

She brightened up somewhat and graciously told that she didn’t know what I was talking about. It was nice of her to lie on my behalf. I’m happy to say that we were able to patch up our relationship after that conversation, and I consider her to this day a dear sister in Christ and a wonderful encouragement to me as a pastor. But I learned something important in that conversation: Some people are trying to destroy pastors, it’s true. But some people are not. And you have to give every individual an opportunity to prove that they are the latter and not the former.

Understanding the New Atheism - Part 1: The Straw God

Behind much of the atheism of today is a false view of God and religion. It's a straw man fallacy, which occurs when someone presents a weak or inaccurate view of a position and then cuts it down. Atheists are often guilty of this fallacy with respect to God. This may be called the 'straw god' fallacy: a false idea of God is easily refuted. While responding to all the fallacious arguments of the new atheists would take a book in itself, we can, nevertheless, highlight two of their basic errors.

Some of you have probably heard me mention the simple conversation between Jesus and the one who was questioning him, trying to pit him against Caesar. And he looked at Jesus and he said, “Is it alright to pay taxes to Caesar?” (Mark 12:14-17) That is one question I wish so desperately Jesus had answered differently—then on April 15 you could be godly and rebellious at the same time! Jesus, so brilliant in his response, he says, “Give me a coin.” And he took the coin and he says, “Whose image do you see on this?” The man says, “Caesar.” Jesus says, “Give to Caesar that which is Caesar’s, and give to God that which is God’s.” The disingenuousness of the questioner is noticed in the fact that he did not come back with a second question. He should have said, “What belongs to God?” And Jesus would have said, “Whose image is on you?”

A Husband's Selfishness

For many years, I had manipulated and controlled Jan to get what I wanted. For instance, when I would ask Jan where she wanted to go to dinner, I was more interested in starting a conversation about having barbecue than truly wanting to know where she would like to go. When I asked her if I could watch the football game on Sunday afternoon, it was more of a statement than a question.

Renewing Your Mind | Grace Alone, Part 1 | April 16, 2015

What Reformed theology teaches is that it is true the believer makes the right response and the non-believer makes the wrong response. But the reason the believer makes the good response is because God in His sovereign election changes the disposition of the heart of the elect to effect a good response. I can take no credit for the response that I made for Christ. God not only initiated my salvation, He not only sowed the seed, but He made sure that that seed germinated in my heart by regenerating me by the power of the Holy Ghost. That regeneration is a necessary condition for the seed to take root and to flourish. That’s why at the heart of Reformed theology the axiom resounds, namely, that regeneration precedes faith. It’s that formula, that order of salvation that all semi-Pelagians reject. They hold to the idea that in their fallen condition of spiritual death, they exercise faith, and then are born again. In their view, they respond to the gospel before the Spirit has changed the disposition of their soul to bring them to faith. When that happens, the glory of God is shared.

Why God Won't Go Away

In part one, McGrath provides an historical overview of the beginning stages of the New Atheism, while highlighting the differences between the old and new strands. The primary difference has less to do with the essential belief inherent to atheism (God's nonexistence), and more to do with the New's emphasis on their hatred of religion in all of its forms (anti-theism).

Christian Leaders Voice Support for Iran Framework Agreement

As Christians we have a moral obligation to pursue this diplomatic course of difficult negotiations until that course is shown to be impossible. Diplomacy is never perfect, but the framework for a nuclear agreement announced April 2 is the best path to achieve the goal of preventing Iran from becoming a nuclear-armed state. When finalized, the parameters of this deal will make it more difficult for Iran to develop a weapon—a goal that reflects the binding commitments made by 191 U.N. member states, including the United States, under the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Has ISIS Established a Training Camp 8 Miles From the Porous Texas Border?

An expert witness knows which questions to anticipate. So should the apologist.

In training young forensic scientists, I spend much time helping them prepare to testify.  They know the laboratory techniques they use in processing evidence.  They understand the instrumentation.  They can interpret the scientific data.  But out of the volumes of questions that could potentially be asked, I focus on preparing them to answer the questions they are most likely to be asked.  Once they become proficient at answering those questions, they are more comfortable with testimony and can better handle the unexpected questions when they come.

Died: Billy Ray Hearn, CCM Pioneer Who Discovered Amy Grant, Keith Green, and Steven Curtis Chapman

By the mid-1990s, Christian music had become big business , and major record companies snatched up Christian labels, including Sparrow. Albums sales at Sparrow and other record labels jumped from 31 million in 1996 to 44 million in 2000. After Sparrow was sold to EMI in 1992, sales more than doubled and the company’s value grew from $35 million to a reported $135 million in 2002. That growth prompted fears that the Christian message of CCM was being lost, reported CT under the headline , “CCM’s Growing Pains.”
