The Evidence For Jesus' Resurrection, Part 1: Why This Matters

Did Jesus really rise from the dead? How can we know? Most people, both Christians, and non-Christians alike, will tell you that if you believe that Jesus rose from the dead, it has to be on either the basis of a religious experience (for example, you were addicted to drugs but prayed to Jesus to free you, and if He did, you would follow him all the days of your life) or blind faith. The general public is under the impression that Jesus’ resurrection cannot be believed on the basis of  evidence.  However, while this perception is common among the general population, it isn’t true. There is actually a wealth of historical evidence for the truth of Christianity, and many skeptics have become Christians by looking at this evidence. [1]   I’m glad that such evidence exists for a number of reasons. For one, I consider myself a generally skeptical and critically thinking person. I like that I can believe that Christianity is true on the basis of more than “The Bible tells me so.” If there were no evidence for Jesus’ resurrection other than the claims of The Bible, I would have a hard time maintaining belief in it.

Recommended Apologetic Resources

The other day I was having a conversation with a friend about apologists, or Christian case-makers. As I was recommending some of the apologists that I follow, I was reminded of several Top Ten Apologists articles and blogs, and thought, “I should do a blog along those lines.” So, in no particular order, here’s my top recommended apologists to follow (and some of their resources). This is in no way all of the people that I follow or really admire, but more of an easily accessible top ten list.

Paul's Radical Conversion To Christianity

Our best historical evidence sees Paul, who formerly persecuted and killed early Christians, converted as a direct result of an experience with the risen Jesus. He tells us of his persecution of the early Christians, and goes as far as to say that, “I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God” ( 1 Cor. 15:9 ). Yet, in our early creed he affirms that Jesus had appeared to him ( 1 Cor. 15:8 ), James, Peter and many others.

3 Reasons Why Christians Should Be Evidential Investigators Instead of Experience Junkies

two people, grew up in a perfect garden, with the perfect father, perfect circumstances, felt the presence, and majesty of the King of Kings himself ,but thru( free will )chose to do what ( they) wanted to do, with the help and nudging of the tempter !!!! they knew God existed, knew of His power and might and love ,etc.,but God would not ( because of free will ) make them obey!!!!! This article reminds me of madeliine murray O'Hare , (famous atheist )whose son became a preacher of the gospel !!!! It also reminds me of Ray Boltz ( well known Christian singer) had a wife and children, and comes out as homosexual and leaves them !!!!! again ( free will) we can keep resisting temptations or just give up the (good fight) it's our choice !!!! I was truly bothered by Ray Boltz decision and could not figure it out until I asked a mature Christian brother about this , and he simply said 2 degrees, and I said ( whats 2 degrees?) he replied if you set sail for your destination and you are 2 degrees off course, you wind up somewhere you don"t want to be (like Bart Campolo) if heaven is where

Can Empathy Ground Morality? No!

Second, what obligation do I have to act a certain way based on my empathetic feelings? If I feel bad seeing a hungry child suffer during a TV commercial, I could decide to volunteer at my local soup kitchen or I could just change the channel. Those are two different responses to my empathy and to say which is right requires a moral judgment. Therefore, empathy isn’t the basis of right and wrong.

A Personal God is the Best Explanation for the Beginning of the Universe

Christians aren’t the only ones looking for the first “uncaused cause” of the universe. Everyone, theists and atheists alike, is looking for the cause of a universe that clearly had a beginning . If the cause of the universe was itself caused, then our search for the beginning of everything would continue, wouldn’t it? We’d be sifting through a series of previous causes toward infinity past, and we all recognize that a search of this nature is both futile and illogical. Believers, skeptics and seekers are in search of the uncaused “first cause”; some of us believe this first cause to be purely “natural’ while others believe this first cause to be supernatural.

Case-Making 101: Is the Bible written by eyewitnesses of the events?

Eyewitness Accounts: Many people think the Bible is just like other “holy books” telling mythological stories or giving philosophical advice. Not true! Upon close examination one will find that the Bible with its 66 different books is written by at least 40 authors who were either eyewitnesses of the accounts or who record eyewitness testimony. These authors came and went over a period of about 1500 years yet they are so cohesive in their subject matter and theme to the point that the 66 books flow as one. In addition the Bible’s content and preservation is unmatched in ancient literature.

Should We Choose Jesus over the Bible?

The problem with that understanding is that it misses the point of what Jesus was actually arguing. The context of the passage is Jesus’ miracles on the Sabbath. The whole point of the passage is that Jesus is the Lord of the Sabbath; He’s what the Sabbath was pointing to. Jesus’ opponents were mishandling God’s Word and looking for eternal life by keeping a form of Sabbath laws. Jesus was showing that their problem was not their devotion to God’s Word—the problem was their heart. In other words, Jesus wouldn’t say, “Lessen your devotion to searching the Scriptures,” but, “Look for Me as you search the Scriptures,” because the Scriptures are a witness to Christ in the same way that the Father is a witness to Christ (v. 37). Again, the problem was not that they didn’t believe in the Father; the problem was their hearts: “You do not have his word abiding in you, for you do not believe the one whom he has sent” (v. 38), and, “But I know that you do not have the love of God within you” (v. 42).

10 Biblical Reasons God Allows Suffering

Each of these points deserves much more explanation. And each point raises further questions as well. Remember, there is no single answer to suffering. But wrestling through these passages, and others, can help provide a biblical perspective on suffering.

What is the criterion of embarrassment, and what are some examples of it?

The criterion of embarrassment is just one of the historical criteria used to select the parts of a piece of ancient literature that are likely to be historical. Other things in the source may have happened, but we can’t know them as history. If significant parts of a text are historical, it is possible to accept it as historical until there are specific reasons to say that some part of it is NOT historical.

How to Read the Bible for Yourself

When I feel tension between two verses or passages, I never assume the Bible is inconsistent. I assume I’m not seeing all I need to see. If I have not seen enough to explain the apparent inconsistency, asking more questions will likely help me see more. Few things make us deeper and richer in our knowledge of God and his ways than this habit of asking how texts cohere in reality when at first they don’t look like they do.

Farm Boy: How Billy Graham Became a Preacher

Graham was no false advertiser. According to The Los Angeles Times , when the sawdust settled, some 6,000 souls had either "re-consecrated their lives" or converted to a life in Christ, "weeping forgiveness for their sins." Their tears were understandable since, according to Graham, they had narrowly missed hellfire and damnation. “Those who reject Christ,” Graham bellowed in an early sermon, "will be cast into the lake of fire and brimstone to spend eternity." He emphasized the point even more vividly in a sermon about Judgment Day. Upon Jesus' return, Graham warned, he would condemn the unrepentant with “fire coming from his eyes,” and a “sword coming from his mouth.” The young evangelist rounded off the theme of condemnation near the end of his crusade with a recitation of Jonathan Edwards's “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” Such firebrand sermons produced restless nights among some audience members, forcing Graham to employ a “‘swing shift’” evangelist to handle decisions for Christ motivated by nightmares of a terrifying Jesus and a wrathful God.

The Pastor's Currency is Influence

The biggest thing we can say to someone is the gospel. A few months ago, I began to notice a guy at my bagel shop every morning, sitting by himself and reading. One day we struck up a conversation. He was desperately tired of his job despite his success. He was disarmingly candid about his lack of direction. I asked him, “Do you have a Bible?” He didn’t, but he warmly welcomed my offer to bring him one and my promise to pray for him. We talked a couple more times and then he took a new job that kept him away. I felt like I’d lost my opportunity with him, but then I got this text message: “I have been meaning to write to thank you for opening my heart and mind to the Lord. I had a friend contact me out of the blue. He is active in a men’s Bible study group and said ‘something’ was pulling him to reach out to me. We all know that ‘something’ was the Lord.”

Choosing a College? Beware a Short-Sighted View

When I was a high school senior, I focused on finding the best college that would benefit me and my future. It was an individualistic approach, paying attention to the best scholarships offered, how nice the admissions counselor was, and how many complimented me for being accepted to the school. I didn’t really consider or give weight to how my college would shape me, and how the campus culture might influence me with a broader vision of God’s kingdom. I paid very little attention to the people who would inevitably influence my character in profound ways. It was a big mistake on my part—and I see college-bound students and their parents make the same mistake year after year. I see college-bound students and their parents make the same mistake year after year. It’s the great American fallacy that the individual is far more important than the institution. But make no mistake: the individual is far more likely to be shaped by the institution, than the other way around. We become the company we keep. Education for God’s Kingdom This is along the lines of what Cornelius Plantinga suggests in his book, Engaging God’s World: A Christian Vision of Faith, Learning, and Living .
